Inpharma 1318 - 15 Dec 2001 Betamethasone enemas effectively treated refractory and severe intestinal GVHD (graft-versus- host disease), report researchers from Japan. In this study, 8 patients with systemic corticosteroid-resistant GVHD after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation received betamethasone [‘Steronema’] 3.95mg enemas once or twice daily for 5–27 days. In 6 patients, diarrhoea and/or abdominal pain resolved and, after the enemas were discontinued, the systemic corticosteroid dosages were successfully reduced without recurrence of intestinal GVHD. The researchers say that the enemas were well tolerated by all patients except one, whose general condition was poor. Wada H, et al.
