Main question addressed in this WP

How can we efficiently use electrofuels to retrieve the stored

energy?

In BEST, two main routes are considered

Electricity production

Mobility Applications

Focus on two key technologies for decentralized combined heat and power

Piston Engines micro Gas Turbines

To get a place in the future energy production, the mGT and Piston Engines need to evolve

They need to become more efficientboth at full and part load operation

They need to become fully CO2 neutral/negative

by using E-fuels (H2/NH3)by integrating CCUS

They need to become MORE flexibleflexible in terms of fuel and operation

è In BEST, focus on fuel flexibility

Page 8: BEST -WP4: ENERGYRESTITUTION · BEST -WP4: ENERGYRESTITUTION TASK4.1.DECENTRALIZEDRESTITUTION Ward De Paepe Kick-off Meeting February 13th, 2020

Development of Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) in Piston Engine

Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) offers theoretically

high fuel flexibilityhigh efficiency (>50%)for small-size (1-10MW)

Potential still needs to be demonstrated in real conditions

è at UCLouvain, a lab-scale engine will be placed in realistic conditions

Assessment of concept of a multi-fuel, high-efficiency, low-NOx emissions mGT for residential use

mGT offers high potential for local restitution

humidification for operation flexibilityEGR reduces Carbon Capture costproven to work with H2 and NH3

Main challenge remains fuel flexibility, which requires novel combustion mode.

è Development and tests of Flameless Combustor in actual mGT (ULB+UMONS)
