There were a record 1,708 races that were qualifiers, 108 more than last year as the total number of runners dropped to the lowest level since 2010 at 590,345. That year there was a mere 1,040 races. Every season there were scores more races with no qualifiers. There were 218 major races, meaning 500 or more runners. The average race size shrunk again, again by 15 percent to 345. There were 100 races with more than 1,000 finishers. There were forty-two with more than 2,000, twenty-three with more than 3,000, sixteen with more than 4,000, and eleven with more than 5,000 finishers. All of these numbers are lower than in past years.

2019 Major Total Percent Ranked Runners

Winter 64 373 3.41% 4365 128062

Spring 73 509 2.50% 5340 213743

Summer 31 398 4.28% 3768 88136

Fall 50 428 2.47% 3963 160404

Total 218 1708 2.95% 17436 590345

In the table above, the percent reflects the number of ranked runners compared with the total runners in all the races for that period. Men and women’s ranked times represented 17,436 times, about an eight percent increase from 2018, with women representing fifty-six percent of the times. Of those who qualified to be ranked, 386 were men, a seven percent increase from last year, and 436 were women, a solid ten percent gain. Both were yearly records. The sixties were the biggest again. For the women, the elder half at 64 lead all divisions, while the younger half was second highest with 56. For the men, the younger half was the biggest at 45, tying the 55-59 women for the third highest total. The elder half for the men was next with 40. The Open women’s division had fifty-six and Open men’s division had forty-one, but both of them include runners from multiple divisions. In the Elite division, fifth ranked Tyler Muse tied last year’s best, Roger Hopper, with fourteen victories. Jeremey Ardaunay was on their heels with 12. Only two others had six or more, Nicolas Crouzier (8) and Omari Dautridge (6). For the women, masters runner Sherry Stick had nine overall wins. Christie Wetzel and Natalie Patterson tied for second with seven. At the very top where all their races were major ones, runner-up Julia Roman-Duval tied our champion Keira D’Amato with six.

In the age group battles, 57 male runners had ten or more victories and twenty-five had fifteen or more victories, while 54 female runners had ten or more victories and twenty-eight had fifteen or more victories. A combined twenty-seven had twenty or more, including five members of the 50 Plus Club* with the top six of all runners having thirty-five or more age group wins. Keep in mind that the asterisk in the open division is for overall wins. Many of these champions between ages 20 and 34 had at least ten AGE GROUP victories. Many of these racers took advantage of the free, weekly Park Run races to aid in amassing their impressive totals. There are seven such events in the region with five centered minutes from Washington, DC.

than 1,000 runners. The 8K had five major races out of 38 events. The 5 Mile had four major races out of 35 events. For the marathon, there were twenty-four with four major and all of those with more than 1,000 finishers. For the 10 Mile, there were thirty-four races with eight major, as well as the largest race with the second most ranked runners, the Army ten miler, and the Credit Union Cherry Blossom, the second largest, having the most ranked runners. Seven of the races had more than 1,000 runners. In the 10K, there were the second and eighth largest of all races with twenty-three majors, including fourteen with more than 1,000 of the 159 events. The four-mile race had thirty-five races with six major and four with more than 1,000 finishers. Finally, seven other races were major with three more than 1,000. The other races with less common distances such as the 3M, 6K, 12K, 15K, and 20K occurred sixty-one times.

We are posting in blue all the runners with National Class times (80%) of the top-rated time for each division based on their best time in 10K equivalence. The time standards are based on the youngest in each division except for the 19 and younger, where it becomes the eldest time, which is for the strongest time. In the past, the division champions get the age grading based on their 10K equivalent. However, each race distance has a different age grading that does not always match up with the expected 10K equivalence. Also, we are now basing on their actual age as well as the actual distance they ran. Thus, it is possible for an older runner in the same division to have a better age graded event than the champion. There will be some runners who are up to the 80% level by being on the older side of the 5-year division that get missed. However, in this manner, everyone in blue will be at least 80%. For this year, all the women’s divisions save the eldest four and the youngest had at least one National Class racer ranked, a total of 64. In the Open division, there were 32 though ten double dipped from other groups. An amazing 14 women had 85% or greater. The men were even more impressive with 96 National Class racers, with only the 90 and older division having none. In the

Open division, all 41 athletes qualified though nine double dipped from other groups. An amazing 32 men had 85% or greater. In the “you got to play to win” category, i.e. (you only qualified in one of the four seasons event) an impressive additional 359 men and 136 women ran a National Class race. The majority were from the open division with 282 for the men and 72 for the women. Six runners made World Class status: 90% Age Grade: Perry Shoemaker, 48, was tops at 94.98%, as the only woman. She was followed by Tim Young, 92.66%, David Wertz 91.50%, Mark Neff 91.22%, Christopher Sloane 90.81, and Carlos Jamieson 90.54%. Perhaps the best race in the region was a 17:55 at the Galax Days 5K by former American Record holder Tom McCormack,66. He lives about thirty miles south of our region and often races in the southwest corner of same. That equates to 93.77%. In 2014 at age 60, he set the American record in 16:58, 94.11%. The top female qualifiers Kendall Tata, 57, at 89.71% and Cindy Conant, 58, 89.26% were followed by Betty Brothers, 72, at 89.05%. Lucy McCausland, 65, at 92.51%, was the top non qualifier. The top male qualifier was Clint McKelvey, 27, at 89.95%. Among other qualifiers were the David Angell, 43, at 89.39% and seniors Stephen Chantry, 64, at 89.36% and Pete Gibson,63, at 88.31%. Below is the 10K equivalent time you need to race to get a National Class ranking.

Runners who win the race or win their division in a race earn an asterisk beside their name. Open runners only get an asterisk for an overall win. The Speed Alone is the fastest qualifying time run for each division. In red, it means the division champion ran it. In the past, a runner beating another runner virtually ended a chance for the losing runner to prevail using the Moreland Racing Factor but we noted that time is of importance as well and runners do recover from a subpar event. Thus, we added to the accounting by giving runners a point for every second their best race beats their competitor’s best race. Runner still lose eight points as well as gain eight points depending on which end of the head-to-head, they fall on. We now list the 10K equivalent of each runner’s fastest race next to their spot in the ranking list. Remember; the fastest time is not always the best race and each runner has at least two races to qualify.

To qualify for the Runner Rankings for the whole year, a runner must be ranked with two races each in at least two periods. Many racers change age group during the year. A runner can use an older age group ranking as the “second” ranking period to qualify for the year. However, they may not use a younger age group to qualify for the older division. It is possible to be ranked in both divisions for those with one younger group ranking and two or more in the older division. The “Speed Alone,” reported at the beginning of each section, is the fastest qualifying time run for each division. In red, it means the division champion ran it. We list the nonqualified runner by name in black. Now let’s see who made the top.

Open Men Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 47:40, 10K = 28:49 Having the top three races, all major, and four victories in your seven races certainly helps. Our champion Tim Young won it all at the YMCA Turkey Trot 5K in 14:37, which would hold as best all the way until Clarendon Day ten months later. In March, he won it all again at the potent TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 23:39. The runner-up was two minutes back, David Angell, 42, and got ranked 32nd. Young can be excused if his half marathon run the next day was a pedestrian 1:13:35, well behind fifth ranked Tyler Muse who won it all in 1:07:49. Muse won all fourteen of his races but three of his half marathons were slower than Young’s. Still it had Muse hovering around Christopher Sloane who had run

Page 10: Best of 2005 - Potomac River Running...Best of 2015 Best of 2016 Best of 2017 Best of 2018 Best of 2019 Best of 2020 By James Moreland The Regional Runner Rankings is looking for more

the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 1:07:45 the week before. Clint McKelvey was second at the One City Half Marathon in 1:07:51 the week before Sloane. Then came the massive Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M and Young put away the title with a superb 47:40. That was two minutes ahead of runner-up McKelvey who had the fourth fastest event, finishing in 49:45. Sloane gets moved to fourth place with his excellent 50:27. By now, everyone has heard that the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M was about eighty meters short. Thus, third ranked Carlos Jamieson the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile one second slower in 50:28 moves ahead. As usual Credit Union Cherry Blossom provides the top time and placement for a slew of runners. Adam LaFemina, takes seventh place with his 51:34 with tenth place Matt Deters not far behind in 51:40. Three more were twelfth place Thomas Rammelkamp (51:50), thirteenth place Michael Mahan (51:56), and eighteenth place Evan Hardy (52:21). Rammelkamp had a faster Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:10:27 than did Mahan who was third overall at the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 25:51. A mere week after Young torched the field in DC, he ventured to Richmond to finish second overall at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 29:45. Two other events served to decide much of the rest of the field. In September, came the Clarendon Day races. McKelvey confirms his placement winning it all in 14:26 with Jamieson a place and a second behind him. Jamieson would return the favor when he won it all in the following 10K (31:10). Sloane was next in 14:41 and finished third overall in the 10K at 31:26. Sixth ranked Thomas Adam ran a fine 15:04, topping nineteenth place Dustin Whitlow (15:13), twentieth place Schaffer Ochstein (15:14), as well as top master and twenty first place runner David Wertz (15:18). Adam had a top ten finish at the Army 10 Miler in 50:55, even beating Jamieson (51:45). Ochstein’s 52:38 there was not quite enough to overcome his one second loss to Whitlow. Whitlow added a March Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 1:10:15. Ahead of Whitlow there was eighth ranked Harrison Toney (1:08:44) and ninth ranked Paul Thistle (1:08:59). Jeremy Ardanuy won it all at the Baltimore Marathon in 2:27:17 to take eleventh place. Fifteenth ranked Abraham Kiplagat matched that event exactly with his Roanoke River 8K in 24:55. However, a month earlier Ardanuy was second overall at the Parks Half Marathon in 1:09:14. Omari Daughtridge squeezes between them into fourteenth place with his best of six overall triumphs, the Fit Foodie 5K in 15:07. Louis Levine takes sixteenth place as second overall on the frigid hills at the RRCA Challenge 10 Mile in 52:43. Seventeenth place goes to Dustin Meeker who ran 54:15. A month later on the eastern shore at the Tim Kennard 10M River Run, Meeker improved to 52:41. Nine of the forty-one qualifiers came from other divisions. National Class times (80%) = 33:24 World Class status (90%) = 29:41

Herndon High School 5K 15:24, 10K = 32:07 Colin McCauley Johnson and Johnson command the division. Aaron Johnson had the best race, winning the First Day 5K in 16:32. He also had four of the top five times. His best 10K was a fine Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 35:08. Because Carter Johnson was just 14 when he finished third overall at the March Madness 5K in 16:41, his age grading was far superior. This is the only division where it helps to be younger, not older. By May, Carter was fifteen and ran a credible Apple Blossom 10K in 36:30. Third ranked Donovan Foley has all but used up his teen years. He won 13 times but in 2020 will be competing in the open division. His best race was the Run Your Heart Out 5K in 17:18. At the brand-new Pot of Gold 5K he was third overall in 36:31. Fourth place Mark Rosas, keeps getting faster, earning his spot as third overall at the Police Pace 5K in 17:20. He won six of his events as did sixth ranked Paul Glass. Glass won at the fast Governor's Land 5K in 17:23. Sean Burrill sneaks in between these two, taking fifth place with his overall win at the Triple R Run for the Ranch 5K in 17:24. National Class times (80%) = 33:24

Christopher Sloane brought a tidal wave to drench the other fifteen qualifying members of the group. He ran the seven best races, all major, as well as a second overall at the Annapolis ten miler in 53:06 for the tenth best race of the year. Third ranked Dustin Meeker slowed a tad at the RRCA Challenge 10 Mile to 54:15. Sloane won it all in 52:07. Fifth ranked Charlie Ban edged sixth place Christopher Pruitt, 54:57 to 54:59. Ban ran well at the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in March with 1:11:57 but that field was quite elite this year. Sloane raced a fine 1:07:45 in perhaps his best racing distance. In the fall, he won it all at the Parks Half Marathon in 1:08:10. In an amazing departure from the norm, Sloane stood alone as the only qualifier in either of the huge April events. At the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, he ran a blazing 50:27. He won it all at the Pike’s Peek 10K in 31:16. That was even faster than his third overall at the swift Clarendon 10K in 31:26. Perhaps he can be excused as he had already rocketed through the area’s fastest 5K course, winning at the Clarendon Day 5K in 14:41. Is it a trend none of the other qualifiers raced at the PR making Clarendon Day races? Runner-up Abraham Kiplagat won it all in three of his five races. His third overall at the Hokie Half Marathon in 1:11:27 was just behind fourth place Brian Flynn’s Blue Gray Half Marathon overall triumph in 1:11:12. Meeker would get by Flynn when he added an overall win at the Tim Kennard 10M River Run in 52:41. Ban ran 55:08 for fifth place. Kiplagat ended the summer, claiming his spot with an overall win at the Roanoke River 8K in 24:55. Flynn only “lost” one of his five races when he had his fastest event, finishing second overall at the Bill Steers Men's 4M in 20:00 to earn fourth place. Christopher Pirch had his best of seven races at the Baron "Deuce" Braswell II Run against Teen Violence 5K as second overall in 15:59 to take eighth place. The reason he could not overtake prolific Travis Boltjes of 16 wins in this division for seventh place, Boltjes had an overall win at the Palio Di Siena 5K in 15:56. Symmetrically solid Boltjes would win 16 races in the 40-44 division later in the year. Sixteen runners qualified for the division. Michael Wardian was resting for his last Thanksgiving in the division, finishing second to champion David Wertz at the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M, 26:27 to 27:27. After all, Wardian of seven marathons wins on seven continents in seven days, was going to run the Northern Central Trail Marathon two days later. He won handily in 2:40:48. Starting in the spring runner-up David Angell made his case for runner-up with the minimum of four races for the year. He had three 5Ks finishing first, second, and third overall. His win at the Appalachian Power Festival 5K in 15:33 probably did the trick as the second fastest 5K of the year. Then he added a second overall at the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 25:39, ahead of sixth ranked Victor Flemming (27:17). The big matchup came in early April as Wertz held off a determined Wardian at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, 53:20 to 53:28. Wardian earns third in the division. Wertz was not done yet. He had missed out on 2018 with not enough races. This year he powered through for third overall at the Pike’s Peek 10K in 32:28, ahead of fifth ranked Christopher Shaw (34:17). Wertz really stamped paid on the division with a 15:18 victory at the Clarendon Day 5K. Fourth ranked Travis Boltjes had 16 wins as a sub master and 16 wins as a master with ample gas to make it to the Elite division as well. Still, his best race was a fifth place at the huge Army 10 Miler in 55:40. Shaw was second overall at the hilly MCRRC Piece of Cake 10K in 34:32. Seventh ranked Jason Dowdy was top master at the Carytown 10K in 34:38. Twenty-two runners in the youngest masters division qualified.

45-49 Men Army 10 Mile 54:51, 10K = 33:00 Philippe Rolly Michael Wardian has always been prolific and known for going all over the world to race in a variety of esoteric events. Now that he has entered into this new division, he has changed his ways…Not! In his nine events he was the overall winner in three distances and second overall four times in three different distances. He owned the three best races. As a young 44-year-old he had a marathon victory. Now aged up he had two second place finishes. His Baltimore Marathon in 2:35:09 was six weeks after the Abebe Bikila Day International Peace Marathon 2:41:05 which is a lifetime rest for this marathoner. He matched his top marathon exactly with an overall win at the Kensington 8Kin 26:15. Former champion Jason Tripp added the other four times in the top nine while Wardian had five. As top master at the Kelly's Shamrock 5K in 16:33, Tripp had the fastest 5K in the division. His best 10K was a third overall at the Zaching against Cancer 10K in 34:32 while Wardian was better at the Dulles Day 10K on the Runway in 34:10. As our runner-up Tripp amazingly had a better RRCA Challenge 10M (58:05) than he did at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M (58:40). That almost never happens except when the winds are fierce in DC. Wardian, who still a baby at 44, ran the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 53:28 in their only head-to head matchups.

A week after Wardian won it all at the Great American Labor Day 5K in 17:20, matching eighth ranked Glen Tortorella’s overall win at the Build the Trails 5K, he met two of his rivals at a distance his loves at least half as much as the marathon. The Parks Half Marathon is always a competitive event and Wardian just cracked the top twenty with 1:17:38, almost exactly half of time of his Baltimore Marathon. Third ranked Matt Boyd amassed sixteen wins including his best race as top master Baron "Deuce" Braswell II Run Against Teen Violence 5K in 17:01. At the half, he settled for second less than a minute behind in 1:18:29. Sixth ranked David Storper of twelve victories was next home with a solid 1:20:15. His best event was the rolling Rockville 10K in 36:04. That same morning fifth place Todd Bibb raced the faster but windier Run for the Parks 10K in 35:42. That was most easily his best race. In addition, he would have 22 wins in 23 events with seven top three overall finishes. Fourth place goes to Mark Landree who straddled this division and the 50-54. He ran best at the Pike's Peek 10K in 35:28. In the early days of this event, the 90s, studies showed that the times at West Potomac Park were similar. That course being flat and Pike’s Peek with a net downhill around 195 feet. Times have changed as well as the course which is now pretty much altitude neutral making Landree’s race even more special. Seventh ranked Mike Colaiacovo threw his hand in at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K with a fine 36:21. In days of yore, we had a mass invasion from the Tidewater Region to try to prove that Pike’ Pike was too easy. They acquitted themselves admirably though their question was left unanswered. Twenty-eight men qualified for the division. National Class times (80%) = 36:02

Alexander Hetherington took the long road to his title defense. He would win twelve of his fourteen events. Ten were major races and ten were at least ten miles long. He ran all four of the big local ten miler, including wins at Annapolis (1:01:31) and at the George Washington Parkway Classic (1:01:36). At Army, he ran 58:47 to best fourth ranked Pete Wergin (1:00:55). It was the best race for Wergin who added fourteen wins, including the Pike’s Peek 10K in 37:17. Hetherington did have a letdown at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M (1:03:33), finishing behind eighth ranked Mario Zuniga who moved on to an elder division in July. Hetherington would get his revenge at the Marine Corps Marathon, racing nearly as fast as last year with a winning 2:50:37. Zuniga ran 3:21:48 for easiestly his toughest performance of the year. Doug Mock, when he races enough, is one of the division’s favorites. He ran the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 28:22 beating third ranked Colin Munsey (29:28), Mock’s time matched Hetherington’s third best effort, an overall win at the Holiday Half Marathon in 1:19:17. Munsey would close on Mock with his overall at the Nail the Rail 9M in 54:27, while Mock was third overall at the Kenya Connect 5K in 17:31. Fourth ranked Daniel List was also ran the Marine Corps Marathon (2:57:45) but was best at one of the half marathons that Hetherington missed, the High Bridge Half Marathon in 1:20:45 as top master. Sixth ranked Antonio Eppolito was undefeated in eleven races. He secured his spot with by far his best race, the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in 29:07. Nine of his races were with DC Road Runners Club. Tommy Neeson is close by in seventh place with a solid Don't Sit on Colon Cancer 5K in 17:41. Dennis Billings takes ninth with a second overall at the Prison Break 5K in 17:51. He deserves special notice as he informed us of one of his events that was on a short course. It can

55-59 Men

Clarendon Day 5K 17:05, 10K = 35:38

Along with ten wins, Mark Neff owned the fastest seven events. He pretty much sewed things up at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 59:26. That took down runner-up Frank Perna (1:01:30) and fourth ranked Daid Haaga (1:01:48) as well as seventh ranked Kevin D’Amanda (1:02:58) who photo finished ahead of Akintunde Morakinyo, also (1:02:58). The month of April usually means a double header by adding the Pike’s Peek 10K. Neff won handily in 36:49 though he mysteriously ran better the month before at the hilly MCRRC Piece of Cake 10K in 36:33. Haaga skipped Pike’s Peek but ran the Piece of cake in 38:34. Fifth place Morakinyo would ice sixth place David Phipps at Pike’s Peek, 37:22 to 37:34. Phipps struggle at Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M (1:06:52) but before (RRCA Challenge 10 Mile, 1:03:26 to 1:07:44) and after (Annapolis 10 Mile, 1:04:08 to 1:07:03) Phipps had Morakinyo’s number. D’Amanda was between the two at the RRCA Challenge 1:06:24) and behind both of them at Annapolis (1:08:36). There MRF scores were Phipps (147), Morakinyo (145), and D’Amanda (81). Third ranked Hernan Garbini laid out a monster number of wins (19). He ran the second fastest 5K at the Community Bridges 5K in 17:52. Neff had an out of this world 17:05 at the region’s fastest 5K, the Clarendon Day. Note that when age grading each race has different criteria. Thus, while his 10K equivalent for that race falls short of world class, the actual distance does not. Neither Perna nor Garbini came close to matching their best race, though Garbini was much closer, running the Bill Steers 4M in 23:35. Perna’s second best effort was a second overall at the Colleen's BA 5K in 18:32. Perna would twice be the overall winner at the Kensington Park Run. Like Perna, Haaga also achieved an overall win there (18:24). Twenty-nine men qualified for the division. National Class times (80%) = 39:12 World Class status (90%) = 35:28

60-64 Men Virginia Regional Ballet 5K 18:09, 10K = 38:33 Stephen Chantry Enormously tough to decide this division. Stephen Chantry only ran five events and did not win in three of them. Thrice he succumbed to third ranked Robert Whitaker in the summer. First at WISC Mad Dash 5K, 19:35 to 19:50 and then a week later at the Super Heroes 5K, 18:57 to 19:12. Still, Chantry had already done Whitaker in twice in the spring in faster times. At the Run for the D. O. G. 5K, 18:56 to 19:15 was the score. Then twice weeks later in May, Chantry again produced the fastest race, winning at the Virginia Regional Ballet 5K in 18:29 to Whitaker’s 18:52. This time, however, it would only get him the runner-up spot. Until that event, Pete Gibson was the proud owner of the top three races at three distances. In December, he hammered the Surf 'n' Santa 5M as second master in 30:43. Then in mid-January he won it all at the Cookie Run 5K in 18:32, nearly matching Chantry’s race to come. The next day, he was top senior at the wildly competitive Frostbite 15K in 59:47. Memorial Day weekend Gibson secure his crown by besting both challengers at the Elizabeth River Run 10K in 39:23. Whitaker would run 39:49, ahead of Chantry’s 40:24. Fourth ranked Maurice Pointer was never far from top consideration. He was good at the longer, distances the Baltimore Marathon in 3:14:33, the Potomac

River Run Half Marathon in 1:27:43 and the Army 10 Mile in 1:06:12 as well as shorter events with his Executive Stampede 5K in 18:52. These four racers owned all of the top 37 times. Like Pointer, fifth ranked Manuel Rivera will be following Chantry to the new division. Rivera ran 60 percent of his 38 races at the Fletcher's Cove Parkrun 5K. He won 37 races and was best at the Walk to End HIV 5K in 19:45. Sixth ranked John Chall put himself up with the elite, racing the Pike’s Peek 10K in 41:40. At the Kelly's Shamrock 5K, he took home gold with a fine 20:03. Speaking of moving on, seventh ranked Jim Thornton left early enough to capture the 65-69 division for 2019. His best race in the younger division was the Menchville Chill 5K in 20:13. Eighth ranked John Robinson raced the Frozen Toe 10K in 42:59. Ninth ranked Preston Evans was peering over his shoulder with a fine Harvest 10K in 43:05. Tenth ranked Michael Kearney had ten wins, including a head-to-head win against eleventh ranked Jeff Atkinson at the Krumpe's Donut Alley Rally 5K, 20:57 to 21:14. Atkinson produced the fastest race at the Running Marvel 5K in 20:46, while Kearney was tops at the Nick Adenhart 5K in 20:50. Still in the top dozen, Mike Meadows ran the University Spirit 5K in20:55 for his best of 12 victories. Forty-five runners were ranked in this huge division. National Class times (80%) = 41:00

Galax Autumn Days 5K Run 17:55, 10K = 37:52 Tom McCormack Former champion Paul Ryan threw in a fine Cranberry Crawl 5K in 20:30 to start the year and easily took third place. That will not be so easy in 2020. The 65-69 racing kings are coming from the Tidewater Region. Our champion Jim Thornton still had a number on runner-up Richard Grant beating him in their only matchup, the Governor's Land 5K, 19:52 to 20:47. Thornton won all ten of his events, including the Super Heroes 5K 20:03. Grant won seven of his events and boasted best at the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 33:14, though it was his only non-top three finish. He raced the Yorktown Victory 10K in 42:17. Every five years the next division has to face Stephen Chantry and 2020 is that year as he has already aged up. The 5K is the most prevalent race but it is also the hardest to judge. Even a little edge, in distance accuracy, weather, or terrain, can move a runner past another

disingenuously. Fourth ranked Steve Sakry provided his best of six wins at the Cow Run 5K in 21:06. Fifth place Bob Becker faced a much larger field at the Sentara Sleighbell 5K and came up with a nearly equal 21:10. Sakry had already run the SPCA Run for Shelter 5K in 21:13 while Becker second best event was the Hopewell Optimist 5K in 22:04. Pike’s Peek is no longer as fast as the West Potomac Course. That makes sixth place Eugene Myers’ 44:38 even better compared with seventh ranked Tom Nolan, who ran the Veterans Day 10K in 44:42. Another of the ten wins produced by Myers was his Bel Air Town Run 5K in 21:28. Nolan kept close by matching that exactly at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 44:47. Myers also bested ninth place Glenn Clemmons (1:18:01) and twelfth ranked Ken Krehbiel (1:16:04) at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M with his fine 1:14:22. Clemmons earns his spot with a masterful win at the Run with Santa 5K in 21:32. Eighth ranked Duane Rosenberg is totally immersed in the Park Run having won an amazing 50 times at the College Park event. His best time was 21:33. Bill Loomis entered the division mid-year and ran a solid Lower Potomac River 10 Mile in 1:15:46. Like that 10 miler, the Anacostia Park Run 5K is flat out and back along the water, subject to high winds. Eleventh ranked Dan Eddy ran his best race at the park run in 21:50. Both of these gents ran a 22:06 5K for their second-best race. Loomis would add a in at the Annapolis 10 Miler in 1:16:46 to secure the tenth position. Forty men qualified for the division. Parks Half Marathon 1:35:59, 10K = 43:33

There is a new sheriff in town. Jim Wright is running times that Jim Noone ran back when Noone entered the division five years ago. Noone moved on mid-year to start another age group dynasty. For the entire year 2019 though, Noone was ushered to his lowest placement ever…fifth. His best effort was the Lucky Leprechaun 5K in 23:09. In 2018, Noone ran the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:14:34 but this year nagging injuries and the desire to race shorter events kept him away. Noone never lost his age group in his twelve races. Third ranked Eric Melby ran 1:18:22. It was a masterful performance. His far and away next best of six major races was the RRCA Challenge 10 Mile in 1:24:35 that would have been good for ninth place. It was no contest when he met Wright at the Parks Half Marathon with Wright dominating,1:35:29 to 1:53:02. Wright, like the cicada, is not always around (racing) but plans to be here in force in 2020. All of his races in the new age group filleted those he had run earlier in the year while in the 65-69 division. On the fourth of July, he was second overall

at the DCRRC Age-Handicapped 4 Mile in 28:40. Noone was third, minutes behind. Five years earlier, Noone had run a 21:29 at the Potomac Valley Games. Fast forward to that weekend this past year and Wright is winning the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K in 21:29. Third ranked Bill Hart bested fourth place Dale Abrahamson in the fall when both registered their best effort. This dittoed for the year with Hart winning the Heart of Ghent 10K in 47:20 and Abrahamson winning the Yorktown Battlefield 10 Miler in 1:19:31. Sixth ranked Joseph Stirt ran twice as many times as Noone and had the same claim losses. His best race was the Rotary Ramblin Rabbit 5K in 23:34. Art Gregory led Noone to the new division In January but before he did, he captured seventh place with his Way Station's Thanksgiving Day 5K in 24:08. Eighth ranked John Dicarlo ran the swift Governor's Land 5K in 24:16 to match Stirt’s second best race, the CTC New Year's 5K. Ninth ranked Wilson Trueheart supplied his fastest of eleven 5Ks by more than a minute at the Donate Family Life 5K in 24:14. The division grew again to thirty-one qualifiers. Run with Dad 5K 23:18, 10K = 48:36

Last year’s champ Ben Dyer got his best two races early back in December. He was fastest at the Sentara Sleighbell 5K in 23:19. Jim Noone aged up in June and edged ahead with a miniscule lead, racing the Run with Dad 5K in 23:18. That extra lunge at the finish was just enough. As you might guess, Dyer’s extra year gives him a higher age grading. Still, Noone acquired four of the top five times. The next five times went to him twice and three times to third ranked Art Gregory who also had aged up and had his best race in June as well, winning the Bel Air Towne Run 5K in 23:51. Noone possessed the fastest 10K at Southlakes in 48:45, while Dyer ran Carytown in 50:50. Gregory, who is training for Boston Marathon, won two 10 milers and two half marathons among his ten victories. Noone was undefeated in his fourteen events. Dyer won five of his nine events. Fourth place Eamonn McEvilly won a lot of DCRRC races whenever Noone eschewed them. Noone usually races with Potomac River Running. And yet McEvilly’s best event was the Herndon Turkey Trot 5K in 24:39. That and six other races were ahead of fifth ranked Harold Ingram’s best race, the Shawsville 5K in 26:45. John Churchman takes hold of sixth by beating tenth ranked Malcolm O’Hagan at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile, 1:35:46 to 1:37:58. Seventh place Igor Lvovskyl won eleven times, including the Rockville 10K in 58:12. Eighth place goes to Richard Behnke who 28:06 at the Celebrate Fairfax 5K. Award number nine goes to Ronald Kellum who won six times but secured his fastest race at the Trailzilla 4M in 36:38. His second race of that series, the Trazilla 5K in 28:18, was a mere second behind eleventh ranked Jack Starnes who ran the Duffield Daze 5K in 28:17. Twelfth ranked Jack Rugh garnered the last race faster than an hour based on 10K equivalence. He ran the Brain Aneurysm Awareness 8K in 46:51. Thirty-nine qualifiers supported this division was is saying something as sixteen of last year’s forty-five racers aged up to the 80-84 division.

Way Station's Thanksgiving Day 5K 26:26, 10K = 55:08

John Clarke won the first two seasons and would have won all four but he only raced once in the latter two seasons. He owned the six fastest events, including his first race, the Way Station's Thanksgiving Day 5K in 26:26 that won him the year. The next six racers were all former champions. Runner-up Stan Neumann ran the same turkey day morn at the Gobble Cobble Turkey Trot 5K in 27:48. He would also add a 10 miler, winning the Tim Kennard 10M River Run in 1:39:34 for his fastest of two. Clarke had an excellent Frederick Half Marathon in 2:08:17 as well as the second fastest 10 Miler, the Lewis Memorial in 1:42:03. Though the course is a tad short, runners run without a watch and predict their time and we do not know Clarke’s prediction. The course is even tougher than Neumann’s choice, the RRCA Challenge, as it has a monster 2-mile hill near the end of the race. Third ranked John Elliott still hits the track and that helped him win the Get Ready! Get Set! Get Fit! 5K in 28:12. He even beat Neumann (28:28) there but ultimately gets his spot even with a MRF of 68 vs. Neumann’s 76. Fourth place Doug Morris is right in the mix with a 28:28 of his own at the March Madness 5K. Fifth ranked Thomas Spasojevich won the summer with his fourth fastest of 23 Deep Run Park Run 5Ks. His best race was the 29:15 he ran the week before Christmas. Right behind him is Ron Chiariello who mentors the Kensington Park Run with 19 wins there. He is not quite as dedicated to only the Park Run with six other locales vs. Spasojevich’s one other event. A little further down in 19th place Michael McClellan dedicated himself to fifteen wins at the by far largest local Park Run, the one in College Park. These octogenarians race so frequently that ninth ranked Thomas McQueeney had only the 89th best race when he ran the 8K Race to Benefit the Haven in 54:46. Another former champion, Maynard Weyers ran a solid 30:43 at the Semper Fi 5K. Still, he earns that placement ahead of eighth place Ken Quincy by besting him at the Lucky Leprechaun 5K, 30:50 to 31:42. Twenty-four men qualified for the division. 85-89 Men Pike’s Peek 10K 1:05:32 George Yannakakis, 87, is still the king of the realm of the 85-89 runner and his kingdom is growing. Thirty men qualified for the division with ten being 88 or older. This prolific racer (16 races) collected 11 of the top 12 times with seven different distances from 5K to half marathon. He appeared in five major races, including a win at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:50:51. His crown-winning event was the Pike’s Peek 10K in 1:05:32. His best 5K was the Packard Center Fiesta 5K in 32:48. In this division where every year is a major slow down, young whippersnapper Jerry Barret, 85, ran an amazing 31:48 at the Spend Yourself 5K to start the 2019 racing year for the second fastest race and the runner-up spot. Normally in the runner-up spot, Jack McMahon, 88, chose to start actual 2019 on the difficult, cold and windy, MCRRC New Year's 5K in 38:06. Fourth ranked William Beydler, also 88, got in a solid 39:00 at the Laurel Turkey Trot 5K. Fifth place goes to Reston’s Jerry Lewis who ran their Turkey Day 5K in 40:18. Two weeks later, he would improve at the slightly long Run with Santa 5K in 40:01. Lewis needed that as sixth ranked Ernest Schillinger would also run a 40:18. His best was at the Coast Guard Day 5K. Schillinger also ran an 8K and three 10Ks. In seventh place, Barney Sword joined the group of racers starting opening week by racing the SOME Thanksgiving Day Trot for Hunger 5K in 42:39. Ninth ranked

Lee Krementz ran the race known most for eighty plus aged racers, the Get Ready! Get Set! Get Fit! 5K in 45:18. That matched eighth ranked Gilbert Rosenthal’s Port to Fort 6K in 55:06 exactly. A month after the 6K, Rosenthal put some separation between them, racing the GBMC Father's Day 5K in 45:06. Tenth ranked Don Taylor, 88, ran the St. Patrick's 5K in 46:16.

It is common knowledge that on both ends of the age groups even one year makes a big difference. Thus, it not a surprise that Joseph Rutkowski, who was eighteenth last year (none of the runners 88 and older came close to the top dozen) in the 85-89 division, easily won. In fact, his Get Ready! Get Set! Get Fit! 5K in 44:41 would have claimed him eleventh place in last year’s competition. Indefatigable Robert White is making his last assault on age 95. He collected four races; more than the other three runners combined. His best was the Smart Smiles 5K in 56:02 to earn the runner-up spot. Two years younger and raring to go, third place Robert Gralley took on the Baltimore Half Marathon, spending more than four hours racing on 93-year-old legs. Early in January 2020, Dixon Hemphill turned 95. He lost a mere minute when he returned to the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 5K to earn his spot in the final four. Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 53:40, 10K = 32:24 Bethany Sachtleben

It is hard to stay on top. With Beth Scahtleben coming up a race short of qualifying, numbers two and three from last year moved up. They both improved again but this time the order changed as Kiera D’Amato surged ahead for the title over runner-up Julia Roman-Duval. D’Amato won six of her nine races as she prepares for the submasters in 2020. Still, her best two races were not overall victories. She finished third at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 33:37, a minute behind Sachtleben who won it all. Then in June, she finished fifth overall at the talent laden Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 33:53. Roman-Duval ran 35:59, while Kerry Allen ran 36:56. Third ranked Hannah Cocchiaro was second at the huge Army ten miler in 56:38, ahead of fourth ranked Maura Linde (57:00), and fifth ranked Perry Shoemaker (57:43). Roman-Duval nearly matched that time on the short-course (81 meters) Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M with an excellent 56:30, beating Cocchiaro’s 58:41. Shoemaker fell between them with a superb 57:30. Cocchiaro followed that up with a second overall at the Pike’s Peek 10K in 35:47 ahead of Silvia Baage’s fourth overall in 36:53. Baage, earned eighth place with a much better Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 59:38. Linde would also win the Clarendon Day 5K in 16:45 to match D’Amato’s second best 5K, the First Day, in January.

Linde’s 5K would best sixth ranked Allen’s 17:06 that earned her a silver medal on the podium Places nine through thirteen also ran the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M as well as twentieth ranked Natalie Patterson (1:01:08). Ninth place was easy as Julie Hartenbach ran 1:00:04 for the best of this lot and backed it with a win over tenth ranked Maura Carroll (1:21:35) and eleventh ranked Margaret Johnson (1:21:58) at the Rock N Roll Half Marathon with her fine 1:20:56. That was just behind Baage’s 1:20:38. At the ten miler, Carroll (1:00:18) and Johnston (1:00:28) were behind thirteenth ranked Caitlyn Tateishi’s 1:00:04. In the fall at the Clarendon Day 5K, Carroll (17:23) and Johnston (17:25) returned the favor as well as did Gina McNamara (17:27) who slipped in front of Tateishi (17:28) to take twelfth place. Tateishi did not get mad, she got even, winning the 10K outright in 37:36 with Johnston at 38:30 behind her. Using the Moreland Ranking Factor, (these ladies combined for more than 500 defeats of other ranked runners) Carroll (MRF 214) beating Johnston (MRF 254) head-to-head twice is clear. Johnston’s MRF keeps her ahead of Tateishi (MRF 157) even though Tatetishi bested Johnston two times to one. Finally, McNamara (MRF 104) takes her place by beating Tateishi. This is a tough case for Tatetishi as McNamara who clearly loses to Johnston also clearly beats Tatetishi. Sixteenth Stephanie Berger arrived a second after Tatetishi and a second ahead of Baage as the ladies were arriving nearly once a second. In six other races, Roman-Duval was the overall winner. She won the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 1:16:28. After D’Amato won the Patrick Henry Half Marathon in 1:15:49, ahead of top master, eighteenth ranked Tressa Briendel, second overall in 1:21:36, Roman-Duval regained top half marathon honors at Parks in 1:15:45. Also there were fifteenth ranked Selvi Rajagopal (1:20:47) and seventeenth best Liz Starks (1:22:29). Starks did much nicer earlier winning the &A Trail Half Marathon in 1:21:17. While D’Amato was winning the One City 8K in 27:15, Megan Cunningham was staking her claim on sixth place, finishing second at the One City Half Marathon in 1:17:55. Two weeks later, Shoemaker was second overall at the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:17:46, ahead of fourteenth ranked Anne Mazur Robb (1:20:26). Cunningham ran that event’s marathon, the Yuengling Shamrock Festival Marathon, to a very credible 2:51:04 and second overall. Back in Virginia Beach in September, Cunningham would boast an overall triumph at the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 1:16:41. Nineteenth ranked Barb Fallon Wallace rolls past Patterson, winning the head-to-head at the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M, 29:19 to 29:45. Patterson stays ahead of Christie Wetzel who also had seven overall wins, defeating her at the RRCA Challenge 10 Mile, 1:03:03 to 1:04:40. Wetzel finished her best race as third overall at the Veterans Day 10K in 36:58 to match Fallon Wallace exactly. Sixteen of the fifty-three runners came from other divisions.

The division is usually all about the 5K. Katie Borland takes the title with the two fastest, led by the March Madness 5K in 19:30. Still, she made the move a week later to race the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in a fine 1:32:35 for the longest distance by the top qualifiers for this division. Our runner-up Soreena Jean ran a monster 18 events, winning six and finishing in the top three overall in seven more. Her best event was the Sentara Sleighbell 5K in 19:45. At just fourteen, third ranked Anna Bodmer was the overall winner at the Winterfest of Lights Jingle Bell 5K in 20:02. Fourth place Emme Cate Heilbrun won it all at the We Believe in You 5K in 20:24. Alyssa Ingerson did the same at the Keystone Community Center 5K in 20:27 to take fifth place. The next two places go to the maidens of the Park Run. Sixth ranked Katie Hirsche raced 25 times at College Park failing to win just twice. Her best time was 20:36. She is now testing the Kensington Park Run as well. Seventh ranked Kerstin Fagerstrom is most often seen at the Fletcher's Cove Parkrun 5K, the oldest of the local Park Runs. She tallied seven wins there, best at 20:35. She has tried out Roosevelt Island successfully as well as with nearly half of her events not Park Runs. Of their combined races Hirsche had 12 of the top 14.

The storm is still raging as Julia Roman-Duval cranked out the top seven races, including just the fourth sub-60:00 RRCA Challenge 10 Mile run by a woman, even faster than last year with a 59:30. Usually that course runs about two minutes slower than the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M. Roman-Duval said, ‘Make that three’ with a fantastic 56:30. This best race was the only race of her top six that she did not win out right. Runner-up Silvia Baage ran a very credible 59:38. At the Rock N Roll Half Marathon, Roman-Duval won in 1:16:28 to Baage’s 1:20:39. Lookout because for 2020 Keira D’Amato has aged up and that seems to push everyone else to race faster too. At the Annapolis 10M, Roman-Duval added a spectacular 57:50 on a hot, hilly course that has fewer sub-60:00s than the aforementioned winter event. Third ranked Liz Starks was third overall in 1:02:55 just ahead of Baage’s 1:03:05, not

really enough to catch her. However, Baage left no doubt when she followed Roman-Duval incredible 1:15:45 at the Parks Half Marathon twenty seconds ahead of Starks, 1:22:09 to 1:22:29. As with the top two, fourth ranked Kristin Lemos delivered seven overall wins and a National Class ranking. Her big race was the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:00:57. Fifth place Jacqueline Morgan had eight wins and was at the Carytown 10K in 39:25. Now it gets dicey. Eighth ranked Amanda Beal (MRF 47) commanded the best time of the three contending runners, racing the Veterans Day 10K in 39:46 ahead of tenth ranked Lindsay Pickett (41:09). Still, sixth ranked Meg Ryan (MRF 118) had her best event beating Beal at the Parks Half Marathon 1:28:16 to 1:28:59. Seventh ranked Hyunsun Reilly (MRF 68) split head-to-head matches with Beal. Beal came back after losing at the RRCA Challenge 10M 1:08:45 to 1:09:26 to best Reilly by a second at the Kelly's Shamrock 5K with 19:21. Reilly trumps the tie with Beal with a higher Moreland Racing Factor. Also, Reilly’s Frederick Half Marathon at third overall in 1:28:05 was the fastest of the trio. Ryan trumps Reilly with a much bigger MRF. Twenty-six women qualified for the division. National Class times (80%) = 38:11

Runner-up Sherry Stick was awesome with 17 age group wins. Per usual, among her 13 overall triumphs was a race where she was the first person to cross the finish line. Her best race was the Donate Life Family 5K in 18:13. That was one second faster than our champion’s fourth best event. The week before, she was second overall at the Patrick Henry Half Marathon in 1:21:36 with only the region’s top ranked runner, Keira D’Amato ahead of her. Breindel also had the three fastest 10Ks in the division. Two were overall wins. The best was the Carytown 10K in 37:41. Stick prefers the 5K and her best seven races were that. Still she had twelve Open-class races, including the Celtic Solstice 5M in 31:45, one of only two races that she did not mount the open podium for. The next three competitors were winding down their final time in the division. Two had already aged up before year’s end. This allowed them to exceed runners ahead of them in age grading which is specific to age and distance. Third ranked Claire Heasman got underway with a swift Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 1:24:11. Fourth ranked Cristina Burbach waited another week before winning at the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:24:51, ahead of fifth ranked Jacqueline Gruendel, (1:25:07). In April, Heasman met Burbach at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M and Heasman prevailed 1:03:05 to 1:03:17. At the shorter distances Heasman was second overall at the Way Station's Thanksgiving Day 5K in 18:23. Gruendel ran the swift Clarendon 5K in 18:28 and followed with the 10K that same morning. Burbach won it all, among her three overall victories, at the George Washington Parkway Classic 5K in 18:54. Sixth ranked Elena Makarevich won 13 times but most impressively had her best race at the marathon, finishing second overall at the Baltimore Marathon in 3:03:00. That was the fastest marathon, even better than our champion Breindel ran at the One City Marathon (3:04:45). Tracy Dzibela had more than her share of wins with 18, including two overall victories. This open-class runner ran best at the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon in 1:27:58. Toni Diegoli nipped Tracy West for eighth place with a solid Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 1:06:13 in and a second overall at the Pike’s Peek 10K in 40.:06. West was best at the SVTC Turkey Trot 5K in 19:11. Amy Huerta rounds out the top ten with a second overall at the Park to Park Half Marathon 1:28:56.

Army 10 Miler 57:43, 10K = 34:41 Perry Shoemaker isn’t getting older; she is getting faster. She won it all at eight of her eleven events. She can be excused for the other non-victories as they were the best three events. all against world class talent. Runner-up Barb Fallon Wallace completed the other five times in the top sixteen. It is a tribute to Fallon

Page 39: Best of 2005 - Potomac River Running...Best of 2015 Best of 2016 Best of 2017 Best of 2018 Best of 2019 Best of 2020 By James Moreland The Regional Runner Rankings is looking for more

Wallace and those five major races she ran that some of them outdid Shoemaker’s lesser events. Between the two, they missed the open podium just two times. Shoemaker started with an excellent Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:17:46 for second overall. Then she powered her way to the finish at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M more than a minute faster than last year in 57:30. No master has ever won that race. In the fall, she ran the Army ten miler that was 81 meters longer than the spring event. She finished fourth overall. A master has won that prestigious event but never as fast as her 57:43. Fallon Wallace is regular award winner at the massive Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M that often attracts an elite field. She finished third overall in 29:19. Less than a month later, she was third overall again at the Jingle All the Way 15K in 57:52, ahead of fourth ranked Stefani Watterson (1:04:02). Third place Hillary Cairns and Watterson are both getting ready to battle as grandmasters. At the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, Cairns won their last battle in this division, 1:06:41 to 1:07:12. She needed that race as Watterson had upended her the month before at the Rock N Roll Half Marathon, 1:29:50 to 1:30:11. Cairns ran just the minimum with that one big event getting her there. Watterson was brilliant and actually faster at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 1:07:17 that was a full ten that the other race was not. In May she produced another gem, racing the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon in 1:31:06. Fifth place Lisa Reichmann had ten wins. Her two best were against eighth ranked Kaari Liisi Linask. First, at Pike's Peek 10K, it was a 42:17 to 42:52 victory. Then in the fall at the Parks Half Marathon she prevailed again, 1:31:23 to 1:35:55. The sixth position goes to Brenda Schrank at the always competitive Apple Blossom 10K where she was top master in 42:07. Reichman had a win at the Annapolis 10 Miler in 1:10:56. Seventh ranked Faye Weaver ran 1:16:42. However, Weaver ran much better at the difficult RRCA Challenge 10 Mile in 1:11:30. Then in March, she was top master at the Kelly's Shamrock 5K in 20:20, slightly better than Reichmann’s Annapolis. Ninth ranked Julie Sapper had three top three placements in the nine 5Ks she ran. Yet, it was her tenth race, the Reston 10M in 1:11:08 that was her best event. Twenty-four women qualified for the division. National Class times (80%) = 40:34 World Class status (90%) = 36:03

Prince William 5K 19:30, 10K = 40:36

Alisa Harvey has always been a world-class middle-distance runner. In the past, she has won Army and for a while held the masters record. This year she was fourth in her age group with 1:11:05 two places behind fourth ranked Shannon Smith (1:11:05). Yet, she was well ahead of runner-up Kim Isler who inexplicably had her worst race there in 1:15:38. Isler started well with her Spend Yourself 5K in 20:11 that put her in the lead ahead of Harvey’s Prince William Turkey Trot 5K in 20:59. Then in March, Isler laid down the hammer and roasted the field at the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:31:47. Harvey finished eighth there in 1:40:35. In September, Harvey summoned up her best and won it all at the Prince William 5K in 19:30 to earn another crown. Every year Denise Knickman comes and produces excellent 10 miler. She ran the fastest race at three different distances, including a win at the Annapolis 10 Miler in 1:09:40 that earned her the third spot, ahead of fifth ranked Samantha Cole (1:14:27). Tenth ranked Tonna Arbaugh ran 1:16:27. Knickman ran a marvelous Pike’s Peek 10K in 42:24 and won at the Baltimore Marathon in 3:18:37. The Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, Knickman a fine 1:12:14 to best Cole (1:15:09) and ninth place Kerry Rodgers (1:15:24). Cole did win at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile exactly matching Smith’s 1:11:05 but Smith had the next five best events between the two to hold her place.

Isler ran a solid Reston 10 Mile to victory in 1:12:43 to beat eighth place Luz Blakney who ran 1:14:48. Seventh ranked Paul Pels had four overall wins at the Kensington Park Run 5K with her best time being 21:15. One place ahead of her Amy Sachs ran the unique distance Port to Fort 6K in 25:21. In the fall, Arbaugh ran the Terry Burk Memorial 5K. The course has always been a net downhill starting on top of a hill and ending eventually at the bottom. However, this year’s course is the slowest of the four iterations from the last half dozen years. She was second overall in 22:01. Thirty-nine women qualified for the division. The top two ladies just do not lose posting the top 29 races between them. They combined for 43 wins with our champion Kendall Tata owning the most with 22 times. Tata was in the top three overall in half of her races and won five of them out right. Cindy Conant won in the top three overall in 16 of her events with six overall wins. If it was just half marathons, Conant was easily the tops with the fastest race being her Parks Half Marathon in 1:31:51. For Tata, her Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon in 1:38:11 was her eighteenth best event. Not that Conant did not run the 5K. She did 18 times to Tata’s 15. Tata gets the title as she had the next ten best times after Conant division leading gem. Tata was best at the Charlottesville 4 Miler in 26:05. That actually age grades better for her even being a year younger because of the distance, At the 5K, Tata ran best winning it all at the Rotary Ramblin Rabbit 5K in 20:18. Conant was at her 5K best at the rolling Capital for a Day 5K in 20:45. The thirtieth best race was had by third ranked Karla Haven who ran the Run for the D. O. G. 5K in 21:23 for her best of 14 wins. Not far behind her, Julie Hayden finished third overall at the Broad Run 5K in 21:27. She would win 15 other times but she is not getting any more wins… in this division. This national class middle-distance runner is now sixty. Fifth ranked Kelly Dworak ran the St. Patrick's Half Marathon in 1:40:34. Racing machine Sushila Nanda never ran the half but won more than half of her 45 events. Far and away her best race was her overall win at the Dragon Dash 5K in 21:50. That matches Dworak’s half exactly. Dworak provided had the next four best races between them, including a Reindeer Run 5K in 22:09. Nanda was best next at the area’s fastest 5K, the Clarendon Day in 22:20. Seventh ranked Jill Snyder won it all at the Junior League of Annapolis 5K in 22:03. Eighth place Suzanne Porter goes long, never bothering to even run a 5K. She was best at the Leesburg 20K in 1:36:39 and would have six half marathons to her race total of 12. Snyder had the next best race at the Get Pumped for Pets

Hosni Haghighian stormed to the lead she would never relinquish art the Charlottesville 10 Mile in 1:18:30. Former champion Carolyn Harrison started the year at the Tidewater Striders Tune-up 10M in 1:20:31. That put her behind third ranked Catherine Baker who ran the slightly short Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:19:43. Ida Draim takes fourth place there with a fine 1:20:25. Harrison would have a slew of wins (20) but her best 5K was the Santa Claus Shuffle 5K in 23:30. Though it was the second fastest 5K of year, it did no damage to Haghighian’s Community Bridges 5K in 22:43. Haghighian’s best 10K was the Pepsi 10K in 48:42. Harrison’s best one was the Fort Eustis 10K in 49:01. Baker was hanging around with two 10Ks better, including her Pike’s Peek race in 47:47. Finally as the year waned, Harrison dug down for the third best event, racing the Yorktown Battlefield 10 Miler in 1:18:54 to wrench the runner-up spot away from Baker. Nancy Hill takes fifth place with a fine 23:35 at the Reindeer Run 5K. In a close battle seventh ranked Robin Goodwin ran the Executive Stampede 5K in 23:38. Then on the same weekend in October Val Indye matched Goodwin’s Baltimore United Way 5K in 23:41 with one of her own at the Superhero 5K and she was second overall. Indye gets the sixth spot when in November she won at the Spook Hill Cider & Wine 4 Mile in 30:45. Former champion Mary Lowe Mayhugh won 39 times and her best race, the JCADA 5K in 23:41 was right there to meld into eighth place. Ninth place goes to Mary Gentry for Taps 5K in 23:46. Tenth place Daniela Micsan had 16 wins but none better than her Veterans Day 5K in 24:07. She also ran Baltimore United Way 5K just behind Goodwin in 24:14 with twelfth ranked Leigh Peck not far behind in 24:37. Helen Worthington was

Army 10 Mile 1:13:54, 10K = 44:25 Lucy McCausland Betty Blank was up to her old tricks again, using East Potomac Park to win herself yet another crown. The Al Lewis 5M used to be a ten or even a 20 Mile and was run in Kensington. This year it was postponed until May. Blank eschewed the longer event which was part of the DCRRC Snowball Series, perhaps to avoid the double out and back. In any event her 40:43 was the best race of the season. As often happens at the ‘little’ event that cruises through West Potomac Park, Blank won her age group at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:25:14 for the second fastest race. Also there was 14th ranked Lizzie Sadoff in her last race in the division out netting fifth ranked Ginny Hughes for place. Sadoff was officially 1:32:43 while Hughes ran 1:32:35. Hughes had already obtaineddid the her spot with the fastest of her ten wins at the Virginia Run Turkey Trot 5K in 25:28, the fastest 5K in the division. Runner-up Peggy Vail AS Anniversary 15K in in 1:21:31 as well as a win at the Annapolis 10 Miler in 1:28:42. Still, she did not gain her spot until much later at the Charles Street 12M in 1:44:37. Third ranked Barbara Mathewson had the best age grading by far. At 69, Fort Eustis 10K in 51:58 was better than all but one of the races by Betty Brothers though Brothers commanded her in their only

head-to-head at the Elizabeth River Run 10K, 53:06 to 56:46. Still that was one of Mathewson’s slowest races so that division is on notice. Fourth ranked Marcy Foster kept getting faster, culminating in a fine Run for the Parks 10K in 52:45 in the final month. Sixth place goes Bonnie Hallock for Veteran's Day 5K in 25:39. Maria Shields does a lot of longer races. This year her best race was a 10K that got cut short to 9K, where she raced the Cold Turkey to seventh place. Tenth ranked Hannah Phillips ran a different Veterans Day 5K in 25:57. Hers was in Fairfax on a slightly long course. Eighth place Helen Worthington is one of the few racers to get qualified in more than one division. Here, she is ran a 25:53 at the Run for the Bulls 5K. Linda Gulick slips between the last two runners with an impressive 23 wins, including her best, the White Bank Classic 5 Miler in 42:54 as well as a slew of Deep Run Parks Runs. Marie Reid also has a thing for Park Runs. Forty three of her 44 races, all wins were at the weekly Park Runs, primarily Kensington after having been a regular at Fletcher’s Cove with a dash of Anacostia and a spot of Leakin. She had by far her best race at Anacostia in 26:02. Twelfth ranked Linda Hannam ran Pike's Peek 10K in 55:20. A 26:42 at the West End Spooky Sprint 5K gains Anne Kohinke the thirteenth place in the rankings. Sixty-four women qualified for the division. National Class times (80%) = 52:08

Yorktown Battlefield 10 Miler 1:25:03, 10K = 51:07

Betty Brothers owns the top nine events. And she still does the longer races with four ten milers and three 10Ks, plus a half and full marathon and a twenty-mile race. She started the year at the Redneck Romp 10M in 1:31:03 just two days after a VAB Turkey Trot 10K in 52:07 and already the division was hers. By the end of the year, she had shed six minutes exactly, winning the Yorktown Battlefield 10 Miler; that was a week after running the Anthem Wicked 10K in 52:27. Runner-up Alice Franks is steadily heading her way. Although, she says out loud that she cannot catch Brothers, her inner voice says, “I think can, I think I can.” Her Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:31:27 was in the neighborhood of Brothers three slowest ten milers. At Veterans Day, Franks ran a strong 10K in 54:53 for the 19th victory of 22 races. Third ranked Barbara Biasi often found herself racing tin the shadow of Brothers as she did with her best race the Yorktown Battlefield 10 Miler in 1:38:37. Still, she was able to win eleven times during the year, including the Fort Eustis 10K in 1:01:35. Not too far behind her was Gretchen Bolton, a runner who prefers the cross country events. She earns fourth at the who knows how short it really was MCRRC Jingle Bell Jog 8K in 46:52. Still, after Franks finished the Parks Half Marathon (2:05:55), Bolton (2:19:47) was next ahead of sixth ranked Toby McGinn (2:20:52). Maryann Lloyd takes fifth place between those last two with most of wins at the 5K, such as her Celebrate Fairfax 5K in 29:12. Seventh ranked Pat Welch had a solid Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:40:48 but is ushered to her spot by a head-to-head loss to McGinn at the Pike’s Peek 10K, 1:01:22 to 1:02:03. From the far southwest corner, Pat Barton takes eighth place with the best of her 16 victories, the Roanoke River 8K in 49:35. Diagonally across the map to the northeast, Christy St. Clair had thirteen wins, none better than her Annapolis 10 Miler in 1:44:49 for ninth place placement. Circling round the clock to the southeast Roswitha Goossens-Winter had the best of her 17 Williamsburg wins at the Democracy Dash 10K in 1:03:43 to take tenth place. Thirty-four runners qualified for the division. National Class times (80%) = 56:10

75-79 Women Parks Half Marathon 2:17:29, 10K = 1:02:08 Karen Kautz had nine of the top ten races. Still, she was searching for a faster race, working hard to keep her challengers at bay. Perhaps it helped that she ran six of her races longer than the traditional 5K. A regular runner for MCRRC, she started her quest on their winter events a stumbled a bit on the hilly course. In

April on a fair course Pike’s Peek, she motored away from the competition, racing a swift 1:03:29. In the summer, she met third place Molly Sherwood, who mostly distains the races shorter that of the Annapolis 10 miler. Sherwood had her best race there in 1:54:06 with Kautz triumphing 1:49:59. Two weeks later, Kautz set the division standard at the Parks Half Marathon in 2:17:29. Runner-up Mary Kate Berglund has always been a title threat, especially at the 5K. She ran best at the Munchkins Popping Donut 5K in 31:28. Kautz, full of confidence, stepped on the accelerator at the College Park Park Run in mid-October with a nifty 30:26. Fourth ranked Ecris Williams held back time long enough to take fourth place with Run with Santa 5K in 33:27 before moving on to the next division. Roosevelt Island Park Run 5K and Rosemary Schwartzbard are synonyms as she won there 21 times last year. However, she tried Fletcher’s Cove and Anacostia, having her best time there in 34:48. Sixth place Mandy Whalen put the finishing touches on her time in the division with a slew of races, led by the Race for the Badge 5K in 34:57. Seventh ranked Jo Orser patronized the Leakin Park Run 5K a dozen times, running best in May at 37:57. The Railroad Days 5K attracts fast older races. Eighth ranked Joanna Bennett finished in 37:52. Jeannette Novak raced more than 200 times again in 2019, winning her age group 58 times for the 75-79 rankings. Eighteen runners qualified for the division. National Class times (80%) = 1:00:55

80-84 Women

Southlakes 10K 1:08:58 Ecris Williams entered the division in a rush. She exploded for 19 wins in 19 events. In early October, she got put on a shelf with injuries. However, she still showed up at the races to remind the rest of us how lucky we were to be racing. She possessed all but one of the best fifteen times, including the top eight races. Most of the time at this age runners stick to the 5K, Williams ran a ten miler and five 10Ks and her two best races were 10Ks. At Southlakes, a rolling course, she had her best time of 1:08:58. Runner-up Janet Hughes is no shrinking violet, winning all eleven of her events, two of them 10Ks. However, she was best at the March Madness 5K in 33:45. That was not far off of Williams’ best, the Lucky Leprechaun 5K in 33:29. Third ranked Laura Pitts ran the minimum four races. She was also best at the 5K though she is known for taking on the longer races throughout her 70s. She was fastest at the Pikesville 5K in 37:13. Many-time former champion Tami Graf still runs fifty or more races a year. She left town for her best race, the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 1:04:40. That was close to Pitts’ second-best race, the Celtic Solstice 5M in 1:04:46. National Class times (80%) = 1:06:45

Ann Coquelin has the fastest 5K (25 of the 28 races in the division were 5Ks) in 44:59 at the Jingle All the Way 5K. Runner-up Ora MacFarlane is just a year older but her Community Bridges 5K in 45:20 age grades better. She had fifth ranked Beverly McCoid (51:20) at her race to keep her moving. Third place goes Jacqueline O’Neill who has been a regular at Washington, DC 5Ks for decades. She ran the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 5K in 47:51. Rankings Explained - What It Is, Who Does It, How We Do It, and Where We are

Going

The goal of the runner rankings is to rank the best runners of Washington, DC, Maryland,

and Virginia, in five-year age groups, for the purpose of stimulating competition in the

Washington region. Runners are ranked only according to performances in rated races.

To be rated, a race must meet the following criteria:

* Take place in Washington, DC, Maryland, or Virginia

* Full results listed on the Web Site

* Must list age (and preferably also city and state of residence) of all runners

* Standard distance--5K, 4M, 8K, 5M, 10K, 12K, 15K, 10M, 20K, 1/2 Marathon, 25K,

30K, 20M, or Marathon

* Road race or cross-country

* Gun Time

To be included, a race must meet all of the above criteria. There will be no exceptions. If

you place well in a race and want it included in the rankings, be sure to ask the race

director to e-mail the complete results to us at [email protected] so that the race can be

counted in the runner rankings.

Sometimes runners are confused by the race tracking terms. Chip time simply means that

it was electronically timed, not manually. Gun time is the official time. Net time, which is

confused with chip time, is merely a feel good time which is tracked by when the

runner’s chip first crosses the starting line. Net time will always be faster than the official

gun time. Runners are welcome to note net time for their personal use but it has no place

in the rankings. In large races, where it is impossible for runners to get to the start for

many minutes after the official gun start, we do allow a net time to count as one of the

necessary two qualifiers to get a runner to be evaluated. However, that time and any net

based age award placement in that race does NOT count towards their placement in the

rankings.

Runners will be ranked by age divisions for both men and women, with the divisions

being open, 19 & younger, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-

79, 80-84, 85-89, and 90 & older.

The rankings are established using a nearly completely objective rating procedure. A

preliminary sort, followed by an intensive analysis of competitive results, forms the

rankings. The preliminary sort is based on the number of qualifying marks and best times.

The final ranking is based on head-to-head competitive results against the other top

placers (fifty percent), with time playing a major but secondary role (forty percent). Our

general philosophy is that competition is about beating other runners and we intend to

place an increased emphasis on competitive results.

To qualify for the end-of-year rankings, runner must run two qualifying races each in

each of at least two of the four ranking periods. A runner can qualify for two different age

groups in a year. As with the individual seasons, a runner can use a qualifying race from

the elder division if it is fast enough to help qualify them for the younger division. Thus,

the minimum number of races two double dip and qualify for two divisions would be six

races. For example, a 60-64 runner run a qualifying race twice in the winter or spring and

then turns sixty-five after the winter and/or the two 60-64 qualifying races in the spring

and qualifies for two of the next three seasons with times fast enough for qualification in

the 60-64 division. A preliminary sort, followed by a more involved analysis of

competitive results, also forms these rankings. The preliminary sort is based on seasonal

rankings and best times. The final ranking is again based on head-to-head competitive

results, with time playing a secondary role, though at times a deciding role. One special

race can at times put a runner over the top, though consistency is a valued asset. I have

devised the Moreland Racing Factor to help in deciding close contests.

Qualifying times are set in each age division for the 10K, and then adjusted for other

distances. I believe in a constant time so that, while a runner may not make the top ten, he

or she may consider himself or herself a ranked runner. My primary concern is that of

believability. There should be few surprises. Competitiveness will always find a few

disputes. Most runners know who they can best and who remains unbeatable. The

rankings should fairly reflect that. If you have comments and questions or would like to

receive a more complete explanation of individual rankings contact me at

Moreland Racing Factor

The Moreland Racing Factor (MRF) has been developed to serve as a check on the

ranking process and to provide a status report on this ranking period. This new ranking

system is not meant to supplant the old system. It will enhance and refine. It will give

runners another look at the ranking process and help make the system more objective.

Just as with the quarterback rating in the NFL, the MRF will be loosely based on 95

points (140 with major races), with the premium coming from runners beaten either in the

open category or in the age divisions. Runners earn points on their best races in a period

based on the qualifiers below. A runner who wins five major races of five different

distances would earn a perfect score of one hundred pure points. (75 for win, 15 for

fastest, 5 for major, 5 for qualifier)

Masters runners are able to get higher numbers. Certainly, a masters runner who earned a

hundred pure points is even more impressive than an open aged (20-34) competitor.

After the pure points have been parsed, we use the following to criteria to delineate racers

in the same age group.

Head to Head 4 8 (points for victor, negative points against loser)

10K Equivalent 1 (point for each second faster than opponent’s best

race versus their best race)

-- Additional points can be earned by prevailing over your competition in the same races

or by qualifying in more than five races (especially major races).

-- Overall winners will be presumed as the 1st in the age group as well. Runners younger

than 20 and older than 34 can earn overall winner points.

-- Age groups will be determined by the races' scoring system (not necessarily five-year

age groups). Runners who are in the overall award category of larger races will be

presumed age group winners as well. (Allowing for multiple 1sts in the age group.) For

instance, at the Twilight 8K, the top three masters in that special category are all age

group winners as well as the winners in each of the individual age groups.

-- The same applies for 2nd and 3rd in the age groups.

-- The runners with the fastest times in individual distances will be awarded 3 points for

each distance from 3M to marathon in that period. Ties give multiple runners points.

-- Each time a runner qualifies with a race, he or she will get 1 point. It is possible to run

more than five races in a period for additional points.

-- Major races are defined as a race with more than 500 finishers or where more than 20%

of the runners in that race qualify for the rankings.

-- Major races score higher points.

-- Each time a runner prevails over a runner with a ranked time in their division, he or she

will receive 1 point. The point applies even if the runners beaten do not have a second

qualifying race to make the rankings
