What is Nursing Revalidation?

Doctors have been required for years to carry a license before they can practice. This same

type of system is now being introduced for both

nurses and midwives. Starting in April 2016 all

nurses will need to complete revalidation. Both

nurses and midwives will now need to undergo

annual clinical appraisals. This process is being

setup to mirror the current system that is used

for doctors.

This process is meant to allow nurses to

demonstrate that they are practicing safely and

following current regulations and standards.

This process was put in place to replace the

current Prep requirements. Under this new

system, nurses will need to complete revalidation

every 3 years. This will be done the same time

that they renew on the register.

The new revalidation is built upon the current

renewal requirements. They do introduce some

new elements. These are not being put in place to

make it harder for nurses to renew. They are

meant to provide nurses a chance to demonstrate that their daily practice reflects the

current standards. It also gives them an opportunity to make sure that they are aware of

all the current standards.

Revalidation sets forth multiple steps and pieces of documentation that both nurses and

midwives will need to show. Currently, the requirements for revalidation are:

Five written reflective accounts

Reflective discussion

A declaration of both health and character

Page 4: Best Nursing revalidation Tips

Professionally prepared indemnity arrangements

Confirmation

450 practice hours or 900 hours (if you are revalidating as both a nurse and

midwife)

35 hours of CPD which must include 20 hours participatory learning

Five different accounts of feedback related to your practice

These new requirements are being produced from several different government

regulations. The National Midwife Council described the governing regulations. They

reported, “The requirements for revalidation are either prescribed in the Nursing and

Midwifery Order 2001 (the Order) and the Education, Registration and Registration

Appeals Rules (the Rules), or are standards set by the NMC for revalidation and

readmission.” Revalidation was put into place to achieve several goals.

Open the lines of communication and sharing between nurses and midwives

Setup a continuous process of checks and balances throughout the career of a nurse

or midwife

Setup a system that allows midwives and nurses to demonstrate professional

competency

There is an over-arching public benefit coming from these extra elements in revalidation.

These additional standards and chances for nurses and midwives illustrating competency

serves to increase public confidence in everyone in these professions. There is one thing

that these new revalidation elements are not meant to be. They are not meant to be a

reflection on any nurse of midwives ability to practice.

Nurses and midwives need to remember that the new revalidation process does not

replace the annual registration fee that is paid to the National Midwife Council (NMC).

Nurses and midwives will still need to pay this fee to stay registered with the NMC.

Take Aways

Revalidation is not meant to be a personal assessment of a single nurse and/or

midwife

Revalidation begins in 2016

Revalidation and Supporting Documentation

For nurses and midwives to be able to meet the requirements,

they will need to produce supporting documentation. This

section lists the requirements and examples of supporting

evidence. This information was compiled from information

from the National Midwife Council. We have provided detailed

explanations of each of these supporting documentation

requirements in the next section.

Revalidation Requirement Suggested Supporting Evidence

450 practice hours or 900 hours (if you

are revalidating as both a nurse and

midwife)

Keep a detailed record of all the practice

hours that you complete including:

Exact number of hours

Contact information of the

organization

Where the work was performed

Detailed description of the work

performed

Supporting evidence of the hours (i.e.

timesheets or job specs

Explanation of scope of practice

35 hours of CPD which must include 20

hours participatory learning

Keep detailed records of Continuing

Professional Development hours

including:

Method of CPD hours (i.e. online, self-

learning, classroom course, etc.

Description of the topic(s) covered

How the topic(s) covered are related to

your work

Date of the CPD hours

Page 6: Best Nursing revalidation Tips

Revalidation Requirement Suggested Supporting Evidence

Exact number of hours

Identify the part of the revalidation

code that the CPD topic(s) most closely

relate to

Evidence of the CPD activity

Five different accounts of feedback

related to your practice

Keep detailed notes of the feedback

content and how the feedback was used to

improve your work. Note: You do not want

these to include any personal data.

Reflective discussion You will need documentation of the

reflective account which includes:

Name and NIMC Pin number of the

nurse or midwife the discussion was

conducted with

Date

Completed NIMC discussion

documentation form

Note: You do not want these to include any

personal data.

Professionally prepared indemnity

arrangements

You will need to produce proof that you

have the required and appropriate

indemnity arrangement. This can be

through an employer, professional

organization, or private insurance

company.

Five written reflective accounts

You need to document:

What you learned from your

Continuing Professional Development

activities.

Page 7: Best Nursing revalidation Tips

Revalidation Requirement Suggested Supporting Evidence

What your learned

How you applied this information to

your work

How the activity was relevant to the

Code

You need to document all this on the

associated NIMC form.

A declaration of both health and

character

This is a simple declaration that you will

be asked to make during your online

revalidation application.

Confirmation

You need to obtain a copy of the NIMC

confirmation form and have it signed by

your confirmer.

Tips for Revalidation Preparation

Revalidation requires you to produce a

significant amount of documentation as

you have seen. We have listed examples

of supporting documentation. There

are some other tips that will help with

your revalidation process. You should

consider working these into your

revalidation preparation.

Make a Portfolio

It is recommended that you keep a

portfolio that contains all the documentation necessary for revalidation. When you go to

meet your confirmer then this portfolio will save you time and make the process easier.

Page 8: Best Nursing revalidation Tips

This information may also be required if your online declaration – made during the online

revalidation process – undergoes manual verification. It is recommended that you keep

this portfolio for 3 years after revalidation. Basically, keep it until your next revalidation

year.

Appraisals

Many employers already do periodic appraisals of their employees. If your employer does

then this is actually a great opportunity for you to meet several revalidation requirements.

The revalidation process was designed to work with these appraisals. You should use

NIMC’s discussion confirmation form during these appraisals. If your boss is also a nurse

and/or midwife then you also can include your reflective discussion during your

appraisal. All you need to do is use NIMC’s reflective discussion documentation form.

Take Aways

Keeping a portfolio helps streamline the Nurse and/or Midwife revalidation

process

How to Document Revalidation Requirements

This section explains the documentation that you should include in your portfolio. Each

subheading goes over a different revalidation requirement.

Practice Hours

Revalidation requires you to document

practice hours. This documentation is

very helpful when you have your required

discussion with your confirmer. You also

will need this if your revalidation

application is pulled for manual review.

You should include in these records:

Exact number of hours

Contact information of the organization

Page 9: Best Nursing revalidation Tips

Where the work was performed

Detailed description of the work performed

Supporting evidence of the hours (i.e. timesheets or job specs)

Explanation of scope of practice

CPD Hours

Documentation of the Continuing Professional Development activities that you

participate is is also part of the discussion you will have with your confirmer. Again, you

may also need this in the case of a manual review. It is recommended that you document:

Method of CPD hours (i.e. online, self-learning, classroom course, etc.

Description of the topic(s) covered

How the topic(s) covered are related to your work

Date of the CPD hours

Exact number of hours

Identify the part of the revalidation code that the CPD topic(s) most closely relate

to

Evidence of the CPD activity

Practice Related Feedback

You will need to be able to show five pieces of practice related feedback. The table below

provides some guidance for collecting and keeping the proper documentation.

Feedback Source Patients

Service Users

Colleagues

Healthcare Professionals

Management

Complaints

Performance reports

Serious Event Reviews

Appraisals Types of Feedback Formal or informal

Written or verbal

Either constructive or positive

Page 10: Best Nursing revalidation Tips

To document these, you should keep a record of the feedback content. You also need to

record how you used the feedback to improve your practice. This is helpful during your

reflective discussions.

Reflective Accounts

You are required to provide proof of five different reflective accounts. To fulfill this

requirement, you will need to document each one using NIMC’s form. Your

documentation should detail what was learned from your CPD activities and how you

applied it to your practice. These forms are not required to be directly given to NIMC upon

revalidation. But, if your revalidation application is manually reviewed then you will need

them.

Reflective Discussion

This discussion is required to

be conducted with another

nurse and/or midwife that is

NIMC registered. This

discussion reviews your five

written reflective accounts,

Continuing Professional

Development activities,

practice related feedback,

and/or a specific event. You

also need to discuss how these are related to the code.

The NIMC registrant that you conduct your reflective discussion should be:

Currently NIMC registered

Someone you work with on a regular basis or someone from a professional or

learning group that you are a member of

Discussion should be in person. If an in person discussion is not feasible then you

can fulfill this requirement by teleconference

Page 11: Best Nursing revalidation Tips

This discussion should be document what was discussed, how it relates to the code, and

how you will put the information to use. You do not want your documentation to contain

any personal information. NOTE: This documentation should be kept in paper form only.

If you share or store it electronically then you may be required by law to inform the

Information Commissioner.

Health and Character

This requirement is meant to provide documentation that the nurse and/or midwife is

able to practice both safely and effectively. This declaration is made during your online

application. You also will be asked to declare any criminal offenses that you are and/or

were charged with. You also will be asked to declare if you have had any determination by

a regulatory body.

This does not mean that you need to declare that you are completely free of all disabilities

or health conditions. You are only declaring that your health condition and/or disability

does not interfere with your ability to perform your professional duties.

Professional Indemnity Arrangement

During your revalidation, you need to be able to provide proof that you are working under

an appropriate indemnity arrangement. For most, your employer provides this

arrangement. IF you are found to be working without an appropriate professional

indemnity arrangement then both your registration and ability to practice as a nurse

and/or midwife will be revoked.

Take Aways

Properly documenting all the Nurse and/or Midwife revalidation requirements

requires some preparation

If you follow the documentation suggestions here than your revalidation

process will be much easier

If your revalidation application is manually reviewed then you will be required

to provide all this supporting documentation

Page 12: Best Nursing revalidation Tips

Who Can Be a Confirmer?

Nurse and/or Midwife revalidation

requires you to demonstrate that you

have met all the revalidation

requirements. Revalidation

regulations refer to this as

confirmation. These requirements

also set for the guidelines as to who

can act as your confirmer.

It is up to you to choose a person who

has the appropriate qualifications to

act as a confirmer. The person who you choose as your confirmer must be an NIMC

registered Nurse and/or Midwife.

To ensure that each Nurse and/or Midwife completing the revalidation process is

choosing a proper confirmer, you will be required to provide some information about

him/her including:

Name

NMC Pin or other professional identification number (where relevant)

Email address

Professional address and postcode

Take Aways

You need to choose an appropriate confirmer

You will be required to provide information about them during revalidation
