Welcome to Berthon Lymington Marina - since the founding of the Marina

in 1968 Berthon has maintained a continuous programme of investment

resulting in unequalled facilities offered to permanent berth holders and

visitors, including shore power, fresh water, fuel, gas, ice, free Wi-Fi,

launderette and the legendary washrooms.

We offer 280 deepwater, well protected berths on the Lymington River for

yachts up to 45m (150ft) L.O.A. The Marina is very close to the centre of

the historic Georgian town of Lymington, which is a gateway to the beautiful

New Forest National Park.

If this is your first visit to Berthon Lymington Marina or you are a seasoned

visitor, this Essential Guide will give you all of the information you need

to make your stay with us memorable, with information not only about

the services we offer and our facilities but also what Lymington and the

surrounding area has to offer, making Berthon not just any marina but an

Essential Destination you will want to return to time and again.

Whilst we have tried to be as inclusive as possible with this guide, if there

is something we have not covered then please let us know by contacting

the Dockmasters.

THE SOLENTThe Solent is an important recreational area for water sports, particularly yachting, hosting many sailing events annually including the classics like Cowes Week, Round the Island race, Old Gaffers, Panerai and so many more.

The area is of great ecological and

landscape importance, particularly

because of the coastal and estuarine

habitats along the edge of the Solent.

Much of its coastline is designated

as a special area of conservation. It is

bordered by and forms a part of the

character of a number of nationally

important protected landscapes

including the New Forest National

Park. The westernmost port on

the northern bank of the Solent is

of course Lymington and Berthon

Marina is the ideal staging point

for longer journeys afloat with the

Channel Islands being less than 100

miles away.

Thursday Evening Racing takes

place with up to 100 boats

registered to race every Thursday

night during the summer, hosted by

the Royal Lymington Yacht Club.

Started in the 1990s, it has become

increasingly popular and now

makes for a fascinating spectacle.

Lymington is also a popular

destination for brushing up on your

boat skills both in handling and

navigating the high seas. There are

numerous sea schools in the area

which take you gently through any

qualifications or provide a skipper to

help you learn more about the local

tides, your boat and its capabilities.

Yacht ClubsLymington has long been a centre for leisure sailors and motor boaters,

and the town has a prestigious history of cruising and racing. The two main

clubs are ideally located each side of the public slipway just a five minute

walk from Berthon Marina.

T H E S O L E N T

Royal Lymington Yacht Club

The club welcomes visitors, sail

and power, from RYA-recognised

clubs. They are most welcome in

the large bar area, which

overlooks the river and to enjoy

the excellent catering.

Membership enquiries are invited

from those active in boating,

again sail or power. If interested,

the staff would be delighted to

show you around the Clubhouse.

Lymington Town Sailing Club

The club was formed in 1946

originally for the local artisans,

who took over and renovated the

Sea Water Bath House which

has existed since 1825.

Nowadays there are activities on

and off the water for all walks of

life and a wide range of age

groups.

Visiting yachtsmen are welcome

to the Solent Room, with its

extensive views over the western

Solent, friendly bar, restaurant

and balcony where you can sit

to watch the boating world go

by. For further information

Salterns Sailing Club

On the outskirts of Lymington,

a pleasant walk via road or the

Solent Way footpath. The club

was formed in 1960 to

encourage and organise sailing

specifically for those under the

age of 16 years and to give its

members practical experience

in a safe environment. The club

is run entirely by volunteers with

both a junior and senior

committee. The Salterns Pond

is a site of Special Scientific

Interest created from an old

saltpan and is about one metre

deep. There is a small club

house with a dedicated yard for

a varying range of dinghies.

THE NEW FOREST

T H E N E W F O R E S T

WalksA wonderful way to see the New

Forest National Park close up,

there are many walks to take you

into the woods, by the seashore,

over heathland or by rivers and

streams. Experience the colours of

changing seasons and the diverse

flora and fauna. One of the special

qualities of the National Park is

the freedom to ramble across

unenclosed land. However, from

April to July there may be signs

asking people to avoid certain areas

to limit disturbance to rare breeding

birds, such as snipe, curlew and

redshank; these birds nest on the

ground in wet areas. There are

also many waymarked trails on

the Forestry Commission website

and guided walks organised by the

National Park and others in the

New Forest.

One of the last places in the south-east of England to offer a sense of natural serenity, there is something for everyone, whether you’re looking to relax, explore or just enjoy.

There are four leisurely walking tours

of the town, each lasting around

90 minutes, led by knowledgeable

guides. These take place on Sunday

mornings and Wednesday evenings

throughout the summer.

www.lymington-town-tours.co.uk

Regular short guided health walks

take place every week throughout

the New Forest area to help keep

you fit and healthy. These free

walks offer a great opportunity to

enjoy the local countryside and

meet new people.

WildlifeThe New Forest National Park is a wildlife-rich landscape covering over

200 square miles. Wherever you go you are likely to see many different

types of plants, trees, insects and birds.

Lepe Country Park

Managed by Hampshire County

Council, Lepe Country Park is

part of the North Solent National

Nature Reserve. The site is next

to the Solent and has wildflower

meadows which attract many

species of insects. The nearby

river and sea attract many water

and song-birds.

Lymington-Keyhaven

Nature Reserve

This is a six-mile length of

coastal grazing marshes,

fresh and saltwater lagoons and

saltmarsh - with fabulous views

across the Solent to the Isle of

Wight. It is nationally important

for its birdlife, plants and insects

and worth visiting at any time of

year. Called the Solent Way, it

runs along the Bath Road

footway at the road entrance

to the marina; turn left and follow

the footway until the municipal

car park, and follow it with the

river or the Solent always on your

left until Hurst Castle, only a

couple of hours walk. Visit

the dungeons where Charles I

was imprisoned in 1648 before

his execution. During summer

months the Hurst Ferry will

take you back to Keyhaven

which shortens the journey home.

Roydon Woods

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight

Trust manage this lovely area of

woodland and heath just south

of Brockenhurst.

National Trust Commons

The National Trust protects over

1,330 hectares (3,300 acres)

of land in the New Forest – made

up of the Commons of

Bramshaw, Ibsley, Rockford,

High Town, and Hale Purlieu.

Those in the north of the Forest

are particularly good for

heathland and woodland wildlife.

Crown Land

The central Crown Lands

(managed by the Forestry

Commission) are wonderful for

wildlife. There are huge expanses

of open heathland and mires,

and both broad-leaved and

coniferous woodland. It is hard

to recommend some sites over

others, but both the Reptile

Centre and Bolderwood are

well known for being excellent

and during the summer you

can often talk with a Ranger or

Information Officer at these sites.

SHIPYARD

Berthon has been synonymous with yacht build and boat repairs since

before 1877, when, as Inman, yachts competing in the first America’s

Cup were built on site; the wealth of knowledge and experience handed

down over the generations is updated with modern technology and lean

management to make us competitive in today’s modern market.

Berthon Boat Company will service or refit your yacht, offering full boatyard and marine engineering support and everything from a fresh coat of antifoul, to a new teak deck, new suite of electronics or complete rebuild. Our comprehensive range of boatyard services include yacht painting, laying up, dry sailing, rigging, marine electronics sales & installation and yacht valeting & maintenance.

Yacht Paint Spraying Facilities

Berthon has one of the most modern yacht paint spraying facilities in

Europe. The 92ft x 36ft (28m x 11m) state of the art booth is flanked by

two similar size preparation booths to complement the UK’s premier

boatyard facility. It allows a dust-free spray paint finish every time.

At Berthon we mainly spray using Awlgrip or International Paint. Air

temperatures are continuously controlled in the boat painting facility, and

– along with other parameters such as hull temperature and air humidity

– are monitored and permanently recorded to ensure a top class paint

finish and a complete history.

Yacht Valeting

At Berthon we recognize that it’s

good to arrive for the weekend

knowing that you will find your

yacht gleaming so that you can

enjoy using, rather than cleaning

her. Also, that after a cruise or

BERTHON APPRENTICESHIP SCHEME

From its inception in 1877, Berthon has worked with and trained

generations of craftsmen in the skilled traditions of boatbuilding.

Berthon’s entire skilled workforce

has trained as an apprentice.

Whilst the UK average graduation

rate for extended apprenticeships

is 70%, the Berthon system is

consistently above 90%, hitting

100% in recent years. Berthon now

receives up to 400 applicants for

8-10 apprenticeships annually.

Apprentices undertake an

advanced training programme

as a marine engineer, marine

electrician, painter/sprayer,

shipwright, rigger or boat mover

etc studying City & Guilds and NVQ

to advanced level 3 in their chosen

field. Throughout their course,

Yard Manager Keith Longman

ensures that apprentices achieve

training targets and monitors the

mentoring process that helps

every individual progress through

the four-year programme. To help

the local Colleges, Berthon has

provided training aids by donating

engines, generators, electronics

and a wooden dinghy for the

college workshops. Apprentices

evolve in their favoured discipline

which means that their potential is

spotted, harnessed, expanded and

maximised early on leading to job

satisfaction and skill specialisation

within Berthon’s multi-talented

in-house workforce. Those that

show good organisational and

management aptitude rise through

the ranks into more senior roles.

AWARDS AND FUNDING

Berthon’s commitment to training

has earned them several regional

and national accolades over

the past few years including

Medium Employer of the Year

in the National Apprenticeship

Awards 2012 and the Hampshire

County Council Award for

Developing Young People

2012/13. In 2009 a Berthon

administered, government funded

Apprenticeship Expansion Pilot

scheme involved 15 businesses

and 60 new apprentices and

came in £120K under budget.

Currently, Berthon is offering

advisory and administration

services, free of charge, to

the Worshipful Company of

Shipwrights’ Ark Appeal scheme

which seeks to underwrite the

first year wages of a three or four

year marine apprentice course to

encourage marine SMEs to take

on apprentices. Six apprentices

have been placed in the first year

and there is hope for 15-20 more

in this coming year.

Washrooms and Laundrette Berthon were proud to have unveiled

their new washrooms. Arguably,

these set the standard amongst

marinas in Europe for design,

attention to detail and attendant

accoutrements. High quality stone

and tiled surfaces, opaque glass

cubicles with extra large shower

trays and equivalent changing

areas, an integral seat and hot box

under, choice of shower heads,

mirrors with heat pads to prevent

misting, separate male and female

family pods with washbasin and

dual shower heads suitable for child

use, baby changing facilities, and

under floor heating throughout,

we believe we have thought of

nearly everything; however, add

hairdryers, shower points, water

free urinals (to save on water and

reduce smell) and even a magnified

mirror, and you should get the

idea. Come and stay at the marina

and sample them for yourself. The

laundrette is on the ground floor

behind the Dockmaster’s office. Ask

the Dockmasters for tokens for the

washing machine and dryer. You will

also find an iron and ironing board.

Yacht ValetingAt Berthon we recognize that it’s

good to arrive for the weekend

knowing that you will find your

yacht gleaming so that you can

enjoy using, rather than cleaning

her. Also, after a cruise or weekend

aboard, you may prefer to leave

us to pump the bilges, wash the

bright work or even do the washing

up! The Boat Care Department

at Berthon offer a comprehensive

range of cleaning options, whether

you are a Berthholder on a regular

cleaning programme or a visitor

requiring a one-off exterior wash-off,

polish or interior valet. See pages

58-59 for charges. If you would

like to find out more or to arrange

a tailored package to suit your

individual needs, please contact

arrange a suitable time to meet or

Berthon Refueller The Lymington Marina Refueller is

conveniently located close to the

main Lymington River channel,

on the end of C-Pier, opposite

the Wightlink Ferry terminal. This

allows easy access for boats of all

sizes to come alongside with no

tight manoeuvres required. (On the

ebb tide it is essential to approach

by heading up river to stem the

current.) The yacht refueller is

open for service daily from 08:15.

Closing time varies according to

season. At busy times one of our

attendants will be present. If not,

they can be easily contacted at the

Dockmasters office, either on VHF

Channel 80, or by using the phone

on the refueller. Please call

01590 647405 for the current

marine diesel prices.

Red Diesel – additional duty In addition to the pump price,

HMRC duty will be applied. The

full rate will be clearly indicated on

the pumps. The amount of duty

charged can be adjusted according

to intended usage, provided that

the skipper declares this BEFORE

filling commences. This must be

done on a declaration form

(visit www.berthon.co.uk to

download the form).

Annual bertholders may make a

single declaration provided they

agree to inform us of any changes.

Marine Diesel, Petrol and Engine Oils The refueller provides marine diesel

and unleaded petrol to suit all

leisure vessels, including engine

oils, 2-stroke oil and diesel additive

are available. Major credit cards

are accepted, (excluding American

Express and Diner’s Club.)

Health, Safety & Environmental Lymington Marina and Berthon Boat

Company operate a progressive

Health, Safety & Environmental

policy by striving to ensure all

parts of the site are safe and

clean at all times. Berthon are also

committed to protecting the marine

environment. Our Environmental

policy and guidelines plus some

simple safety advice for Berth

Holders are all displayed at the

Marina Office. We ask all parents

keep a close watch on their

children and advise that they wear

lifejackets/buoyancy aids whist on

the marina pontoons, or on board.

If you notice anything amiss or

dangerous, please report it to the

Dockmasters immediately.

Water Hoses The Regulations for the supply of

water have become more stringent

in recent years and oblige us

to apply some controls. Berth

holders and users of visiting craft

are requested to use their own

hose, preferably of the lay-flat type,

and to remove them from our tap

immediately after use. We have

hoses available in the Dockmasters’

Office, which can be borrowed at

no charge, but must not be left

unattended on pontoons. The ends

must not be allowed to come into

contact with sea water, any other

liquids or the vessel’s holding tank.

Electricity Supplies Visitors are welcome to connect

to our pontoon supplies, which is

inclusive of the Daily Visitor Charge.

For longer stays at the Weekly Rate,

vessels connected to electricity

MUST be metered. Please ask

the Dockmasters for a meter or

discuss with them how you may

use your own.

Diesel and Oil Spills All oil spills, either on land or

water, need to be reported to

the Dockmasters’ Office who will

contact the Environment Agency/

DEFRA or the Harbour Master’s

Office as necessary. Please note

that it is illegal to use dispersant in

waters of less than 20m in depth

and standard practice is to allow

diesel spills to evaporate.

For land based spills ABSORBIT

is available from the Dockmasters’

Office. Berth Holders are asked not

to pump bilges whist in the Marina

or River.

Waste Management Lymington Marina and Berthon

Boat Company are committed to

responsible and environmentally

friendly waste management, with

the least possible inconvenience for

our customers. No rubbish or food

waste should be thrown overboard,

and we ask all our customers to

please separate their rubbish and

use the correct bins supplied.

For day to day waste we have three bins:

Mixed Recycling – For

domestic plastics, paper, card,

and cans.

Glass – for all bottles and jars.

General Waste – For anything

which cannot be recycled,

except: Engine oil, diesel, filters,

batteries, paint, other hazardous

materials, scrap metal and large

amounts of cardboard.

Please ask the Dockmasters

for direction to specific bins for

these materials.

Gas Bottles – Must not be left

on our site without prior

agreement. The method of

disposal is different per supplier

so please ask the Dockmasters

for assistance.

Distress Flares – It is illegal to

dispose of distress flares

anywhere on our site, due to the

high risk of fire and injury. They

should be taken to the MCA

in line with their policy, or can

be handed in at Lymington Police

Station. There is no charge for

this service.

Because of the risks involved in

managing waste, please be

aware that we closely monitor

the bin area via CCTV.

Food Waste from boats

making their first landfall in

an EU port – There are EU

Regulations which apply when a

boat’s previous port of departure

was outside of the EU.

Please ask the Dockmasters for

instructions and a special bin to

dispose of any applicable waste.

Unbreakable rat race escape capsule from the masters of world girdling in 2006. A world ARC veteran, she circuited the planet without fuss, and has given enormous pleasure to her skipper and crew. A pitstop is now apposite.

Unmistakable Chuck Paine good looks, built by Blighty’s finest in 2001. She has voyaged to the Galapagos, Vancouver, Maine, the Caribbean and many points between without a Dockwise operative in sight! Her greatest modesty is definitely the price.

Awesome sailing yacht from that yard with the totally unprounceable name, from 2008, looking very fresh. She comes with all the bells and flutes and offers swift, comfortable passage making as well as an interior of which the good Doctor’s tardis, would be proud.

Capable Rob Humphreys, lift keels are all the go these days, and having the option of puddle jumping or crossing oceans without a change of yacht has to be a great way to go. From 2010, she is barely run in and is offered with a vast widget list as well as a rather malnourished ask.

Superior trawler yacht from 2005 from the Fleming magicians, she is quite simply beautifully engineered and the widget list is long. Seriously under used and skipper maintained, she offers epic sea keeping, and will run on fumes at displacement speeds.

Norwegian know how and with build of the first quality, but most importantly she comes with epic handling and performance – as of course – she’s a Windy. From 2006, Volvo D6s ensure rapid take off as well as an ear to ear grin for her helm.
