I don’t know how we keep getting glorious days for our Gymkhana each year, just lucky I guess. Rain all around us, but once again we awoke to a lovely autumn Easter Saturday. The day ran smoothly, thanks to everyone fulfilling their particular role, which ensured another very successful event. Although there were a couple of tumbles on the horse arena, none were serious and no call for an ambulance this year. Always a good outcome!!

The Jumping Arena was slightly down on horse numbers this year; however, the Hack Arena and the Novelty Ring Events were well supported. Last year we had a couple of trucks come up from Macedon. They had such a brilliant day that they encouraged some of their friends to come along this year. As a result, we had 8 trucks roll in this year from the Macedon region, with around 30 adults and their children participating, not only in the horse events on offer, but all the kids games as well. They all camped the night and most went to the pub on the Saturday night for a meal and some refreshments, so good for the town. Reports indicate that there will be more next year!!

On the public side of things, we had several enquiries from families in Albury/Wodonga this year wanting to know what was on offer. Our gatekeepers mentioned that there were a lot of unfamiliar faces coming in, so it appears we are now attracting more families from outside our area. We had 567 paying adults through the gate this year and, if you add on the kids, we estimate a crowd of close to 1000.

Angry Birds made its debut in the kids’ games arena this year. For those of you, like me, who are not into electronics, I will explain. It is a full size, real version of an electronic game, where kids sling shoot tennis balls at one another. So, much time and effort went into constructing, painting and outfitting two homes to house these angry birds, which were then placed either side of the tennis net on one of the tennis courts. For safety reasons, we insisted that cricket helmets be worn while participating. The takings indicate that 190 children had a go at this game. The only complaint – could the committee please ensure that adult size helmets be available next year so the big kids can have a go without having to re-arrange the shape of their heads.

Finally, after being the runner up for the past two years, Brodie Sirl won the Iron Man Contest from an unlucky Jack Day. This event was neck and neck for a long way until Jack dropped his bale of hay. Brodie did, however, pull up a bit distressed and we thought that he may be

THIS ISSUEa late scratching from the Men’s Gift. He did recover sufficiently to compete, although not successfully. Jack was a bit unlucky as he was the runner up to Joe Hodgkin in the Gift. Maybe he did not have enough recovery time after the Iron man. Lara Schwerdt was in the same boat as Jack. Runner up to Wendy Bakic in the Iron Woman Contest and runner up to Kate Crawford in the Gift. The Pie Eating contest was taken out for the third year running by Damian Rieniets in the time of 36 seconds. We’ll have to slow him down somehow. Perhaps we’ll leave his pie frozen next year!! Congratulations to the winners and well done to all contestants for having a red hot go.

Many entries were received in the Dog Jumping Contest and we had dogs of all shapes, sizes and colours competing for the prizes on offer. There were some really close contests and they enthralled the crowd with some of their antics. The kids really enjoy this interaction with their beloved pets and every dog went home with a bag of goodies.

Unfortunately we had a couple of incidents this year. The first occurred on the day just prior to the Men’s Iron Man Event. One contestant stripped off his outer clothing and was revealed to be wearing a body hugging, Red Bull type of outfit that some found offensive. Luckily, our quick thinking, fleet footed local policeman was quickly on the scene to sort this offender out. Look out Nev, we’ll enter you in the Iron Man next year. The second incident involved our lovely new big sign, which was placed, as per previous years, on the verge of the Murray Valley Highway at the end of the long straight between Ebden and Killara. When we went to collect our numerous signs on the Monday morning immediately after the Gymkhana, we discovered this sign was missing. Some excellent detective

work located this sign in Vic Roads depot in Wodonga. She’d been arrested!! Something about a permit being required. Whoops!!! Fortunately, bail was granted and she is now tucked away with the other signs awaiting her duties next year. Next year; however, you may have to look further afield to spot her.

At the time of penning this, the financial side of things had not been finalised. We anticipate; however, that our profit will be similar to last years and that we will be able to divide up around $3000-00 between eight different local community groups. On top of this, the Bethanga Golf Club ran a very successful wood raffle

on the day, which no doubt they will inform you about in their allotted section.

This day has never been about making money. It was the wish of our late President, Butch Prichard, to put on a day where kids could come and have fun and that every child would leave with a ribbon or a prize of some description, without it costing their parents an arm and a leg. Our committee was confident that if we could put on the right horse events and the right fun kids events on the program, that eventually it would make

a bit of money by attracting more people. The feedback from this year’s event has all been positive and we intend to continue running this event this way in the future, in his honour.

I have listed below all our winners. I believe that all have received their prizes; however, if you feel you were entitled to something and not received it, please let me know. Also below is a list of our sponsors. We are extremely lucky to have so many who are willing to assist us with our day. The donations and gifts we receive allow us to do the little things that make our day unique. We ask you, where possible, to support them.

That’s it for another year. If you did something, made something or gave something in the lead up to or on the day, we sincerely thank you. If you came along with a horse in tow or the family in tow, we thank you for supporting our event. We hope you had an enjoyable day.

Talgarno Hall CommitteeThe committee has decided (due to cost and availability of grant) to go ahead with a staged approach to the verandah/portico, starting with a portico over the front doors. As well as improving the look of the building, this portico will protect the entrance from the weather, improve access in wet weather, and allow for lighting and matting which will better protect the floor from grit.

Further improvements to be made include the kitchen splashback, sensor lighting, grounds around front of hall, and stage backdrop. We are still attempting to find grants available to local communities to assist with the cost of these, and other proposed improvements.

Biggest Morning Tea - small crowd with deep pocketsAround 40 people attended the annual Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea fund raiser at the Bethanga Hall on May 28. The event raised $560.80 for cancer research through gold coin entry, raffles, plants and sales of leftovers.

The cooking talents of the community were demonstrated with a wide range of delicious food brought by the participants. Local businesses and local residents provided very desirable prizes for the raffles and door prizes. A special thank you to Joan and Barry Elliot for donating the wide selection of plants from their beautiful garden in Talgarno.

Given the animated greetings and chat that could be witnessed around the hall, the fundraising event provided a great opportunity to catch up with other locals.

Thank you to those who attended and gave so generously and to those businessesand locals who donated prizes or made a donation but could not attend the morning tea.

I dropped into the Bellbridge shop the other day and was surprised to see a little stand draped in pasta sheets. The new owners, mother and son, Dean Stern and Helen Warr were making spaghetti bolognaise using their own home made pasta. Home-made food including cakes, tarts and scones will be a speciality of the shop.

Dean and Helen are from Albury. Dean was a truck driver and during the week Helen works in office administration as well as weekends in Bellbridge. Dean and Helen are building the range of stock in the shop to meet the community needs. If you run

out of something give the store a try and also try their home made food.

Liz McBarron’s solo show will take you on a surreal journey through time. You will be transported through three centuries. Watch as Liz crosses age and gender division and quickly slips into twenty different characters from each era - both men and women.

See the various colourful and vibrant characters she chooses to recreate on stage. They have been sourced from books and plays, by many well-known authors such as; Henry Lawson, Lewis Caroll, Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, to name just a few. Be amazed when you realise you can actually remember some of them. Many characters are humorous, but there’s a good sprinkling of those that are eccentric, insane, fragile or domineering. A good dollop of parody, scandal and satire will also be presented in the play.

This is a very interesting and entertaining evening, complete with musical interludes and historical costumes.

If perchance, you don’t recognise Liz’s name, you will probably know her face. She is a Bethanga local who has performed with eight companies in the North-east; from HotHouse Theatre’s “Burn” to Albury Wodonga Theatre Company productions such as “Blackadder 2” and “Bombshells” which have both been staged in recent years at the Bethanga Hall.

Bethanga Pony Club and Adult Riding Group to Re-formAt a meeting of interested participants in Bethanga on 1 June a temporary committee was elected to resurrect the Bethanga Pony Club and adult riding group.

The pony club would be affili-ated with Pony Club Association of Victoria which would provide 24 hour insurance cover for

members. At this stage the adult riding group would not join the Horse Riding Clubs Association of Victoria.

The plan is to hold pony club one day per month so that it does not take over all other sporting and social activities. Pony club would be held in the morning and the adult riding in

the afternoon.

The clubs will cater for the begin-ners and experienced riders. Bethanga has qualified instruc-tors available to teach learners and help develop skills. It hoped that horses will be available to give children and adults an op-portunity to try horse riding.

The committee is looking for drums and poles suitable to make horse jumps as well as horses that could be used to teach children to ride.

Rainfall Round-upThe autumn rainfall (February to end April) was 244 mm, about 72% above average (142 mm) and 130% above the median (105 mm). February was a bit dry, March almost twice as wet as average and April (138 mm) extraordinary – only five years (’39,‘73,’74,’89 and ’90) had more rain since records were kept at Hume Weir.

The BOM forecast for autumn was inaccurate for our district but nobody is complaining. BOM suggested rainfall would be close to the median 105 mm and we received 244 mm. Much of the rainfall in late March and April was associated with a low over NE Victoria connected by a trough to northern Australia and fed by moist air coming in from the east. I think we were probably a bit lucky and this sort of weather pattern is difficult to forecast.

Prospects for Winter (May through July)Despite all the talk about the emerging El Niño, the outlook for winter is that rainfall is likely to be close to the median of 189 mm for the three months.

However, the models are still predicting further warming of the surface water temperature in

the tropical Pacific Ocean suggesting an El Niño may develop over winter. Sea temperatures in the eastern Indian Ocean, south of Australia and parts of the Tasman, are warmer than normal which is unusual for an El Niño and this may be offsetting the effects of the developing El Niño. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is currently neutral and unlikely to affect the winter rainfall. I think it would be wise to continue to monitor the El Niño situation each fortnight when the BOM gives it update.

Maximum and minimum temperatures are forecast to be a little above average over winter for our district. This, coupled with average rainfall and good soil moisture going into winter, should mean that pasture growth is a little better than average. It has certainly been exceptional so far this May.

The Bethanga community was saddened by the recent passing of three of its residents.

John De Leeuw died on March 15 2014 aged 70. John was the president of the Men’s Shed, an active member of Neighbourhood Watch and the smiling face in the Bethanga shop on Tuesdays. John worked behind the scenes to get things done. Our condolences to wife Leslie’

Benny Mann died 19 May 2014 aged 82. His legacy is the miles of fencing he did in the district over his 50 years in Bethanga. Benny was a legend on local farms. He was raised on a farm and his lifelong work was shearing, fencing, hay carting and working with animals. Benny helped at the gymkhana every year except for two years when his health did not allow it.

Sharyn Gale died very suddenly on May 22 aged 47. Sharyn was dedicated to the raising of her seven children. We extend our deepest sympathy to husband Les and the children.

What’s happening on the Berringa PeninsulaBerringa Community News asked the Towong Shire about some issues that affect the Berringa Peninsula

Georges Creek road

Q There are trees marked with crosses on Georges Creek road. Are these trees to be removed to widen the road. If so what is the timeline?

Trees marked are to accommodate the next stage of Georges Creek Road upgrade and sealing. Council has kept the road widening to the west side of the existing formation to limit the impact and number of trees for removal.

Garbage Collection

Q Will the Peninsula be part of the Garbage service that the Shire is running or will we remain with Cleanaway?

The waste services for the whole of Towong Shire will be undertaken by Council early in the coming financial year.

Streetscape Bethanga

Q Is there a plan to plant out the streets/roads where the feral plum trees are being removed and also on the fill at the CFA shed?

Sections where the feral plum trees have been removed, via Council initiation and keen input from the local school, are to be planted by students / parents alike. Bethanga Primary School has nominated National Tree Day, August 1, as their preferred day for being

involved in replanting sections along Martins Road with natives.

Kurrajong Gap

Q When will the road be resurfaced following the road widening.?

Kurrajong Gap earthworks widening has been completed with the second stage of the works for pavement widening / sealing due to commence within the next 3-4weeks weather depending.

Asbestos and asbestos containing materials pose a serious risk to our health and must be disposed of appropriately. Moving asbestos is the most dangerous time for inhaling fibres which means proper disposal is all the more vital. “When taken into the lungs, asbestos fibres can cause a range of diseases such as mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. Therefore, disposal of asbestos containing materials (ACMs) and asbestos itself requires specific handling,” said Cr Mary Fraser OAM, Mayor of Towong Shire Council.

“Residents may not be aware that Council does not accept asbestos

and ACMs at either the Tallangatta Transfer Station or the Corryong Landfill because we are not licensed and fitted out to handle such substances.” If your load of waste is suspected of containing asbestos you will be turned away from Council waste facilities. Certain ACMs are accepted at the Myrtleford and Albury waste disposal facilities. However, phoning ahead is required to arrange for disposal.

Illegal dumping of asbestos still occurs but attracts heavy fines. Those who are found to have illegally dumped or transported asbestos may be held responsible for the costs associated with its

proper disposal.

Cr Fraser stated, “Licensed asbestos removal is the safest way to dispose of asbestos. Trained practitioners safely remove and dispose of the substance. If you suspect you have asbestos on your property, it is best to consult with a qualified removalist who is licensed by WorkSafe Victoria. A list of removalists can be found on the WorkSafe Victoria website.”

For further information on the disposal of asbestos, the Victorian Government asbestos website (asbestos.vic.gov.au) is a useful resource collating information from WorkSafe Victoria, the EPA and the Department of Health.

AREA CO-ORDINATOR'S REPORT A warm welcome to you, the residents of our beautiful Peninsula Neighbourhood Watch area. Haven’t the autumn leaves been spectacular this year and as a farmer, I am thrilled with the commencement of this season! You will read in Nev’s column there have been very few crime incidents which is pleasing. It would be reasonable to assume we are all working toward creating our community as a safe place to live. Well done and let’s not back off reporting unusual incidents to our local policeman, Nev Barrow. If you do see something unusual, note features such as location, time of day/night, people movements, animal movements, model of vehicle, colour of vehicle, machine, coat, hair etc; and report this to police. Neighbourhood Watch is about reporting unusual incidents to the Police whose job it is to attend to the matters. We are regularly told how often a small incident may not seem like it is worth reporting yet it may be the very piece of information that solves a crime. Similarly an incident may not have any association with a criminal event which the police can manage too. Finally can I encourage you to join us at the next Neighbourhood Watch Community sausage sizzle from 6.00pm followed by a Community Meeting and the AGM at the Talgarno Primary School. If you attended the last meeting at Bethanga and enjoyed the sausage sizzle and numerous other treats people generously brought, then why not join us at the next gathering at Talgarno? We do need your help in sharing the activities of making our community a safe place to live. All positions will be declared vacant so if you would be happy to give a few hours each quarter, to help we would be thrilled to welcome you. We need people with ideas, community event co-ordination skills, meeting recording skills, newsletter production skills and a genuine desire to work as a team member in making our community a safe place to live. Please feel free to call me on 0418 215 076

Best wishes, Ross Mitchell,

FOR YOUR DIARY Next meeting dates for 2014

Talgarno Primary School – 20th August - 6pm for a Sausage Sizzle before the Community Meeting and AGM at 7.30pm Bellbridge Community Centre – 19th Nov -7pm for a Community Meeting and Christmas Dinner – Please bring a salad or desert to share. Chicken is provided Our recent meeting was hosted by the Bethanga community at the Bethanga Hall and we extend our thanks to this great team for organising such a successful evening. This meeting was the first of a new idea we had to hold a sausage sizzle at 6.00pm prior to the community meeting at 7.30pm, so those residents who couldn’t get to the 7.30pm meeting have an opportunity to know more about Neighbourhood Watch and offer ideas as to how we can continue to work toward keeping our community a safe place to live. Free NHW brochures, gate signs etc were available for those who attended. More than 50 parents and children attended the sausage sizzle and many stayed on for the meeting. Guest speaker for the evening was Gareth Mack from Macktrovix. Gareth alerted us to the importance of having home security systems and how reasonably priced they are......so much so that Insurance Premiums may be reduced if particular systems are installed. Thanks for your help selling and buying some tickets for the Wood Raffle. The annual Wood Raffle is the only fund raising event Peninsula Neighbourhood Watch runs so we ask you to help with this event annually so we may continue our work in keeping our community a safe place to live.

The winner of the Wood Raffle was Julie de Hennin, who donated the load of wood to a needy local cause. The Wood Raffle raised $869.00 for our local Peninsula NHW.

Road rule refresher ...... Courtesy: RACV Royal auto magazine Emily McLean Do you know the difference between stationary and parked relating to mobile phone rules? A hand held mobile phone may not be used if a vehicle is

‘stationary but not parked’: e.g. stationary but not parked’ is when you are stopped at traffic lights or in congested traffic.

But the rules are stricter for learner and probationary drivers, who must be parked

to use a mobile phone in either handheld or hands free mode.

To ensure you are parked, you must stop at a place where you can legally stop. Our advice is to then ensure the vehicle is in park and the park brake/emergency brake is on. If your vehicle is legally parked, for the purpose of using a phone, you do not have to turn off the engine.

Probationary and P2 drivers are no longer allowed to use a mobile phone at all while driving. This already applied to learner and P1 drivers.

Penalties for the illegal use of a phone or visual display unit while driving have increased to $433 and four demerit points......Don’t do it

CLUBS AND GROUPSBERRINGA CERT

In an Emergency call 00012 May to 16 May was Volunteer Week. To show their appreciation, Ambulance Victoria provided $200 for the 14 members of our CERT team “to have lunch on them”. The team appreciated the recognition but is a small reward for the time the team dedicates to CERT. Each member attends two training nights a month as well as being on call to provide 24 hour cover seven days a week. Each member contributes what time they can. Some members give a few hours between their family, social and work commitments, others cover overnight after finishing a day at work, some with more flexible work arrangements or are retired are on call for whole days. Being on call requires being prepared to drop what you’re doing when the pager goes off, calling your partner to arrange a rendezvous point, changing into a uniform, then getting safely to the location within the speed limit. Most of you will have seen the CERT car around. Most times this will be the members swapping the car over on the roster or refuelling.

So why do we do it? I think I can speak for the team to say that we all want to contribute to making our community a better place to live. Sometimes we wonder why we do it, particularly when we endure the repetitious training on skills and equipment that we have never had to use or go for months without being called out. But the last couple of months has reminded us why we do it and the value of the training and equipment we are given. We have been to some

very confronting medical emergencies to people in the community, some we know as friends or neighbours, and have been able to provide emergency care and pain relief until the ambulance arrives.

You can help us by ensuring you have a visible property number. If you live in the Bethanga or Talgarno CFA areas where the rural numbering system applies and do not have one of the hi- vis road side numbers that the local emergency services installed a couple of years ago, please contact John Northey Bethanga CFA on 6026 4574 or Graham Redman Talgarno CFA on 6020 1134.

CERT AGMThe CERT AGM will be held on 25 August at Bethanga Hall at 7:00pm. If anyone is interested in joining the committee, contact our President Carol Marshall on 6026 4927.

BETHANGA ACTION GROUPAutumn seems to have passed us by very quickly this year, I think our group is wondering where the last three months have gone!

We would like to thank everyone who contributed to our ANZAC Day service, special thanks going to John Tudor for conducting our service so well and to our wonderful singers, poet, school children and the Defence Force who helped to make this day successful. We are so fortunate to have this wonderful talent in our community. The numbers have increased in attendance at our service and we find this very fulfilling and especially to see the families coming along to remember this special day.

Friday 9 May, saw another Albury Wodonga Theatre show at the Bethanga Hall; it was well attended with around 108 of the community enjoying the program “Lipstick Dreams”. Along with quite a bit of laughter and the company of those in the community, it was a good evening and we thank all those who attended and made our fundraiser a success.

Coming up on Friday 8 August, our very own local actress LIZ MCBARRON will be performing for the Albury Wodonga Theatre Company a one woman show

The shed has been rocked with the unexpected passing of our president John De Leeuw. John was an amazing man and all the men are feeling the loss immensely.

We are continuing on with the restoration of the old furphy cart and an old sideboard.

The men gather at the shed from 9 am every Wednesday and all new members are welcome. The shed is located in Sirl Street, Bethanga (the old Shire depot).

BETHANGA RECREATION RESERVEFootballWodonga Saints played Tallangatta on the 12 April. A fantastic day it turned out to be after a week of much needed rain. The crowd was down on last year. This may have been the rainy week, other things on for people, or message just did not get out there well enough. Berringa Community News did a fantastic job with the evening meal and would recommend to the locals and others to stick around next year. This is good for all and would help the Berringa Community News raise some funds to help keep us all informed of what is happening or happened in our area.

Easter GymkhanaThe gymkhana was a fantastic day with people who come from as far as Gisbourne and Woodend for the horse events. It was also fantastic seeing the children having fun in the organised games and some of their parents also beaming ear from ear in some of the challenges they put themselves through. The ground was also a treat. Thank you to Mary and the Gymkhana Committee and all their helpers for all your help. Hopefully the pre-prep was alleviated by the tidy up in preparation for the football the weekend before. So thank you again to those that put the time and effort in.

Pony ClubGREAT NEWS, to hear that the Pony Club may be re-established and while in the early stages of getting up and running, I would encourage parents and likeminded youngsters to get involved. The club will give skills and pointers in horse care and will be great fun.For those wanting more information please contact Tracey Woodhouse 0413 708 302

safety risk and detracting from the attractiveness of the reserve. We have considered spraying but this would cost around $300 per tree each year and would only be effective if all trees in the town were also treated. We are also considering a replanting program and debating which species would be appropriate. The committee would welcome community input on these and other alternatives. We want to keep the feel and beauty of the reserve and the town.

Around the groundThe Towong Council has put soil and fill into the uneven area between the bottom of the oval and creek in the paddock area. This will still allow natural drainage making it easier to maintain while giving access to more usable ground in the future.

We are also looking at some alternatives to upgrade the electrical supply and drainage to the canteen, as both have shown limitations on big event days.

We have had some discussion on altering the main bench in the kitchen to make a bit more traffic area on big catering events while maintaining or making more usable space.

TALGARNO CFAThe brigade responded to 11 callouts this calendar year and all of these were for incidents outside our area. A total of 22 firefighters were involved in these callouts and our Captain, Peter Star, has thanked all members for their support. A number of brigade members joined Strike Teams to assist in fires outside District 24.

It is good to see that there have been very few local incidents outside the fire season and the community seems to understand the need to report their intentions to burn off with Vicfire (1800 668 511) prior to lighting up. The community’s cooperation in this way means that the brigade doesn’t get called out unnecessarily when somebody reports smoke from a private burn.

Brigade members will be aware of the sign at Trewella Road which gives notice of up-coming training opportunities and brigade meetings.

The Biennial General Meeting of the Brigade was held on 22 April and elections were held for office bearers for the two years starting 1 July 1 2014. The results were as follows:

President - Hugh Dunchue Captain - Peter Star1st Lieutenant - Michael Elliot2nd Lieutenant - John Green3rd Lieutenant - Peter Wood4th Lieutenant - Terrence GreenCommunications Officer - Anthea RedmanTraining Coordinator - Michael ElliotCommunity Safety Coordinator - Peter WoodHealth & Safety Coordinator - Peter StarApparatus Officer - Rob MedwellSecretary/Treasurer - Greg HayesMFPC Delegate - Max Merkel/Hugh DunchueGroup Delegates - Graham Redman/Peter StarVFBV Delegates - Hugh Dunchue/Ken Merkel

At the General Meeting, the following items were discussed:

• Captain’s Report – Peter thanked the brigade members and office bearers for their support and welcomed the new team of young lieutenants. He indicated that this would be his last period as Captain and emphasised the need to work as a team.

• Treasurer’s Report – Greg reported that the brigade was in a good financial position with term deposits of $22,184.73 and bank balances of $3,144.15. Donations totalled $2000 and fundraising has generated a net $787 to end March. He indicated that this would be his last period as Secretary/Treasurer.

• Digital radios are now fitted to both the tanker and slip-on and training has been provided (thanks to John Northey from Bethanga Brigade) in operation of the new sets including the protocols needed for working directly with VicFire rather than the Group as in the past.

• Graeme Cocks from Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) provided an overview of the role of VFBV and noted that our brigade had contributed to the Welfare Fund which provides support to volunteer firefighters facing hardships. The VFBV is active in guiding the implementation of some of the CFA’s initiatives in Community Safety, training, fleet replacement, post season de-briefing and a range of other issues.

• Chris Daniels from Region 24 reported on a number of issues that have arisen this fire season including: accidental damage to fire trucks; the need to consider rehabilitation work on firebreaks etc. while equipment was still on-site; management of fatigue; and need to ensure fire fighters have all their PPC prior to joining strike teams. Chris also mentioned that the Cool Room project has been fully funded by corporate donations.

21 March 2:54pmCall: Grass and scrub fire Leneva. four members turned out Tanker 2 to assist Leneva. The fire was brought under control and we were called off en route.

We have had a quiet fire season in our brigade area. There were some large fires started by lightning in neighbouring brigade’s areas so I guess we were a bit lucky. No fires were reported due to residents doing the wrong thing so we thank you all for being fire conscious.

Brigade electionsWe recently had our biennial brigade meeting and elections to elect our Brigade management team for the next two years and reflected on the past two years to see how the brigade had performed.

Over the past two years we have responded to 41 incidents: 16 in our area and 21 outside our area. We have kept up our excellent member turnouts to all incidents with an average of 11 per incident and in

total, 454 members responded to the 41 incidents. We have helped other brigades close by and as far away as Sydney and Melbourne.

One of our main achievements was the Brigade purchase of the Slip-on stationed at Bellbridge and the conscientious members from that area that man it. The combination of unit and crew has strengthened our brigade in many ways. Members have also put in many hours conducting roadside burns and have attended and helped at many community events.

Well done to everyone for a great effort!

Red Balloon dayThe students and staff of the Bethanga Primary School showed their support for Victorian fire fighters by participating in a Red Balloon Day on 28 February. We always find the staff and students at Bethanga PSenthusiastic, well-mannered and great to be around. I hope Bethanga PS will invite us back soon with the fire truck to have some fun.

ROTARY CLUB OF BELLBRIDGE LAKE HUMELake Hume Cycle Challenge raises $20,000 for local cancer support

A record 442 cyclists registered for the recent 15th Lake Hume Cycle Challenge back in February. They had a choice of four rides: the Granya Grind (134 km), the Tallangatta Tour (100 km), the Weir Waddle (40 km) and the 3 km River walk; all starting and ending at Noreuil Park.

The organisers, Bellbridge-Lake Hume Rotary, the beneficiary, the Cancer Wellness Centre and the main sponsor, Dorevitch, were thrilled with the result. Numbers

were up 30% on 2013, with record entries in each ride and for the total event. A big thanks to all those who participated, the volunteers who helped make the event a great success, and the local residents who were inconvenienced by the cyclists and remained courteous.

A particular thanks to those who helped out at the reviver stops: Tallangatta (Tallangatta Rotary), Granya (Sue Lukins), Talgarno (Austin Elliot) and Lake Hume Village (Regional Cancer Service) and Club member’s and partners, who all pulled above their weight on the day.

Riders, sponsors and exhibitors enjoyed the mild summer weather. The many visitors to the area praised the friendliness of the day, the lovely scenery and the thrill of riding over the Hume Dam wall. After completing the ride, participants were treated to a complimentary sausage sandwich, soft drink, water melon and cake, beside the river at Noreuil.

A bit of colour and excitement was added to the day with Albury City Council entering a team, the Mayor starting each ride, including the presence of Highway Patrol vehicles for the Weir Waddle, the event he rode in. Recumbent rider, Lloyd Chanter, also completed the same ride.

The Gold event sponsor was Dorevitch Pathology. Silver event sponsors were the Commercial Club of Albury, Donate Life and

Regional Cancer Committee Trust Fund chairwoman Di Thomas, Bellbridge Lake Hume Rotary Club members Stuart Lucas and Colin Maginnity and volunteer and fund-raising co-ordinator for Albury Wodonga Health Elaine Hill

Albury City Council. There were also over 20 business sponsors who kindly donated prizes (see event facebook page). These fun awards were written up on a white board creating lots of attention. Event photos are at http://www.lakehumecyclechallenge.com.au/gallery.php

Great support from our sponsors and a record attendance resulted in a record donation being made to the Cancer Wellness Centre. Profit for the day surpassed the combined donations for 2012 and 2013 events ($6,000 and $11,760.95 respectively) resulting in a 2014 donation of $20,000.

A big thanks again to all the participants, volunteers, sponsors and on line friends, and courteous local vehicle traffic, all who helped the day to be a great success. A special thanks to the Ulysses Motorcycle Club for the professional escort role they played on the day and the $500 donation they made to the beneficiary.

This is a very important charity fund raiser for the Albury Wodonga area. Our survey shows 30% of riding are visitors paying for accommodation and hospitality. We need to make the cyclist’s safety and enjoyment a priority just for the few hours of the event.

Feedback to improve the event is welcomed. Please place any constructive comments at http://www.lakehumecyclechallenge.com.au/contact.php. For those that rode, hope to see you all again next year at the 16th Break the Lake Lake Hume Cycle Challenge rides; even better, bring some mates along!

Seniors Christmas in JulyThe Rotary Club will host its annual Christmas in July function for peninsula seniors on Sunday 27July. As usual it will be held at the Bellbridge Community Centre, commencing at midday. A two course meal and drinks will be supplied, free of charge. A bit of foot tapping live music is always enjoyed by the attendees.

If you know of somebody locally who would like to be there, and is in need of transport, please contact Rotarian Bob on 6026 4540.Salvation Army Red Shield AppealOnce again the Rotary Club of Bellbridge Lake Hume rallied to provide volunteers to collect in the area for this annual appeal.

I would like to thank our members and volunteers for their tremendous effort in covering the area including Bethanga, Bellbridge and Talgarno to Georges Creek.

The results were excellent with $1,650.05 being raised for this worthy cause.

Of course this result would not be possible without the generous support of the residents in the area and we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for each and every donation. Thankyou

LAKE HUME SOCCER CLUBFOOTBALL AT BETHANGA - Saturdays 10 am – 12 noon Terms 2 & 3

Lake Hume Soccer Club is up and running and despite a damp start to the season, the kids are having fun. Things kick off on Saturdays at 10 am - 12 noon at the beautiful Bethanga Recreation Reserve. Kids learn skills and have a fun game each week at Bethanga – no need to travel to different places each week.

The club caters for girls and boys aged 4 to 15 (we’ll take older or younger if they’re keen) and we divide the kids into two or three groups, the “biggies”, “middlies” and “littlies”. Our enthusiastic coaches will put the players through their paces practicing a few new skills, improving on existing ones, playing a game or two, and having a good run around. Parents are encouraged to get involved either on the field, on the sidelines or helping in the canteen. Or you could just get yourself a coffee from the canteen and take in the spectacle that is Saturday morning junior football.

LHSC is a small club and we do not field any teams in the Albury Wodonga Football Association competition - so all our games are home games! The club is affiliated with the Football Federation of Victoria and all Lake Hume Soccer Club players are required to register. Costs are $50 per child for the season.

If a relaxed and friendly Saturday morning of Football appeals to you, then come to our first session and try it out. Kids get two ‘come and try’ sessions before needing to register.

For more information on the club and our activities call Roland Linssen (President) 0412 085 690 or Helen Wilson (Secretary) 6026 4404.

Burning of Native Pasture trials at TalgarnoOn Monday 5 May, we attempted to burn the Talgarno native pasture trial plots at Rhonda Sinclair and Hugh Dunchue property and Greg Hayes property. It was great to have traditional owners on board and representation from CFA, Landcare, Land Managers and North East Catchment Management Authority.

The project aims are to:

• assess the effect of fire on native and exotic plant species, and

• how traditional ecological knowledge can be incorporated into current management practices.

Given the early autumn break and the flush of green growth – we found it difficult to get the fire to take hold; however, it was a still an excellent opportunity to discuss Indigenous fire techniques. These include burning in patches, rather than straight lines, always keeping the wind on your back and not allowing the flame to get too high (above your knee). Paying careful and continual attention to the wind conditions is crucial. The plots will be burnt when conditions are more favourable and further assessments will be undertaken in spring.

We did however burn some Kangaroo Grass at Greg Hayes place that were outside of the trial plots. This burnt very well as there was considerable dry matter. It also provided the traditional owners the opportunity to demonstrate their slow, mosaic burn techniques.

A field day outlining the interim project results will be held at the end of the year. Rhonda Sinclair

Reptiles in Woodlands Field Day

On Friday 2 of May 2014, the North East Catchment Management Authority and the Wises Creek – Talgarno Landcare Group held a Reptile field day at Talgarno, as part of a Federal Government funded program on Box Gum Grassy Woodlands. Dr Damian Michael from the Australian National University led the group on a search for the Inland Carpet Python (Morelia spilota spp. Metcalfei).

The small group searched for a couple of hours and found no python’s but did find a multitude of scorpions. An assortment of other reptiles were also found among the conglomerate rocks including various skinks, such as the Southern Rainbow Skink (Carlia tetradactyla) with its orange stripes, the Boulenger’s Skink (Morethia boulengeri), and a Dwyer’s Snake (Parasuta dwyeri) which is a beautiful little brown snake with a dark hood covering the top of its head (actually you may get a fright at first thinking it is a baby brown snake).

Of significance, a Yellow- faced Whipsnake was found (Demansia psammophis ssp. psammophis). It has a black band on its snout and a distinctive black “comma” marking covering its eyes, which are large for a snake. This sighting represents the second recording of this species in North East Victoria. It is considered to be one of the fastest snakes around, with very good sight. They are generally not found alive as they are long gone once detecting the presence of humans. The snake we found had recently been killed. We suspect we scared the Grey Butcher birds from their lunch, as we heard them calling all morning. I must say that the snake looked to be alive.

Term 2 for the Berringa kindergarten children and their families has been a busy one to date.

We have held a National Families Day where families had a picnic lunch together at kindergarten. This activity developed the children's awareness of belonging to a family and a community .

The dental care program, Smiles for Miles, has again been followed at kindergarten. The children received a new water bottle and insulated lunch bag as part of this State Government funded program. Staff notice at each session that the children talk about their “everyday” and “sometimes” food that is in their lunch bag. This aspect of the the program meets the National Framework learning outcome of “Wellbeing” as they become more aware of the benefits of good nutrition.

Next Friday the 23rd of May, kinder has an Open Day for Education Week. The children will be running some science experiments, and showing visitors around their kindergarten.

Using the wood workbench and tools has developed the children's sense of being and becoming, as they learn to fix and make things! The creation of a fairy tree in the yard by some children has allowed them moments to wonder at and explore.

The children have been very interested in singing songs and telling stories using different puppets. This is a great activity that the children have fun with, as well as developing their literacy skills.

Later this month, the children will have a visit from musician, David the Music Man, who plays many different instruments and provides a very interactive session with the children. We are looking forward to sharing this time with children from Bethanga and Talgarno Primary Schools.

Sessions are Wednesday and Friday 9-4.30pm.

Thank You, Christine Cameron Berringa Kindergarten Director.

Bethanga Primary School News

It has been a very busy few months at Bethanga Primary School and quite hard to believe that we are half way through Term 2.

On Friday, 28th February, the front fence of Bethanga Primary was covered with red balloons carrying beautiful messages of thanks to our fire fighters. Our students purchased a red balloon for a gold coin and all money raised was presented to Bethanga CFA Captain, John Northey.

Sarah, Neale and Hunter Kohne welcomed beautiful Matilda May (5lbs 8oz) on Friday, 28th February.

Alana, Alex J, Amy S, Angus, Carly, Casey, Charlotte, Chelsea, Joe and Tahlia produced super efforts to make it through to zone swimming on Friday, 28th February. Alana and Charlotte subsequently made it through to the Regional Finals which was a stellar effort!

We had a huge turn up to our Pancake Breakfast on Shrove Tuesday and raised $86.00 for Uniting Care. It was a great morning and wonderful to see so many people (students, parents, grandparents and community members).

On Friday, 21st March we celebrated Harmony Day and also acknowledged the National Day of action against Bullying and Violence. Our students made kites as part of a cross age activity. Incredibly we had the windiest day in a long time which was perfect for kite flying. The key messages behind Harmony Day and the National Day against Bullying and Violence are ones to live by each day and will continue to be a focus for our language and actions at school so that they become embedded.

On Monday, 24th March we became the tenth school in the wider Wodonga area to receive our own Peace Flame. The flame was presented by Maggie and John Baker from the Albury/Wodonga Peace Flame Committee. Our students sang “Imagine”, accompanied by our wonderful music teacher Chelsea, on guitar. It

was a beautiful ceremony!

A three day week saw the beginning of Term 2.

We were so very proud of our students at the ANZAC service held at the Bethanga Soldiers’ Hall on ANZAC Day. We greatly appreciated the efforts of our parents for bringing

the children along to remember and pay respect to all those who have made, or are currently making, sacrifices for our country.

The weather was perfect for our twenty eight students who participated in the cross country at the Tallangatta Golf Course on Friday, 16th May. Thirteen students moved through to district level on 23rd May. We will update their results in the next edition of the Berringa News.

Please encourage families with children for 2015 Foundation to give us a call at school so we can organise a tour and send out an information pack. The year is flying by and transition is now a focus for those both beginning at Bethanga Primary and also those departing for their secondary school journey in 2015.

Take care and more news next edition!

Deb Bowman

Our whole school community extends our sympathy and thoughts to Les, Shania, Beau, Luke, Krystal, Keenan, Michael and Melanie Gale on the loss of their Mum and wife Sharyn. Over the past sixteen years, Sharyn was a wonderful help to our school in many ways and she will be greatly missed.

Talgarno Primary School farewelled Rilee, our temporary student from New Zealand, on the last day of Term 1. A great party was thrown to farewell her, as she looked forward to seeing her family again across the ditch. Rilee has been understandably missed by the students, with some wanting to plan an immediate holiday to New Zealand to visit Rilee!

We have been lucky enough to welcome two new students to Talgarno Primary School recently. Zed (year 4) and Michael (year 2) have been a wonderful addition to our school and are settling straight into life at Talgarno Primary.

As usual it has been an extremely busy start to the year since the autumn edition of Berringa Community News went to print. We have a relieving Principal, Ms Boyer, who started on Wednesday, 7 May, while Mrs McGuffie is on sick leave for Term 2.

In late Term 1, students had a particular focus on sizzling starts to their writing, with many looking for examples of these in familiar stories, TV shows and movies. Students practised this technique in their writing, to hone this valuable skill. It is well known that you need to be able to engage a reader in the first few paragraphs, for them to continue to read on and enjoy the rest of the piece.

In numeracy, the students worked on improving their time-telling skills. Understanding how to tell the time on an analogue clock is an essential skill. It helps develop an understanding of fractions, addition and subtraction, and the science of time (why we have 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in an hour and 60 seconds in a minute).

Our community disco, held at Bellbridge Community Centre in March, was a great event. At least 50 children from the Berringa Peninsula sang and danced along to the latest tunes, whilst many of the parents caught up on the balcony for a social chat.

In the last week of Term 1, our students treated the school community to a play called ‘The Foolish Little Hare’, which was followed by an Easter Hat parade, Easter egg hunt and community morning tea. Other

activities

the students participated in during Term One included a reptile excursion to Berringa Kindergarten, an Environmental Day at Tallangatta and Clean Up Australia Day.

This term (Term 2), our students have so far attended the ANZAC day service held at Tallangatta, hosted

by Tallangatta Secondary College. Students listened to the bugler playing The Last Post, watched the raising of the Australian flag and observed a minute’s silence to pay their respect to those who lost their

lives fighting for our freedom and way life.

Some of our themes this term in literacy include persuasive writing. Students have analysed advertisements, and picked out some of the techniques advertisers use to persuade us to buy their product. Consequently, some of the dinner time conversations have been very interesting!

Mapping and Geography has been another learning area this term. Topics covered so far include position, direction, learning about the continents, states, capital cities, the state of Victoria and world landmarks. The knowledge they have gained will come in handy when they make it onto ‘Who Wants To Be a Millionaire’, or perhaps the Trivia night in June!

Our agenda for the remainder of the term includes:

• MARC van visits to Bethanga Primary School, continuing fortnightly

• Trivia night, Saturday 14 June, hosted at school (tables of 10, $60 a table).

As usual, please do not hesitate in contacting us to find out how you can help out at the school. Our students are always keen to see different faces at the school, and our community members no doubt have many skills to share.

In addition, please let us know if you have any suggestions for how the school can be used by other

community groups. We are keen to see the school used as a community asset for all, not just children in the community.

Have a wonderful winter, stay warm and healthy and we look forward to updating you all in the next edition of the Berringa Community News.
