Fall Kick Off 2016 held on Sunday, September 18th was spectacular. What an amazing day of events made possible by everyone participating with enthusiasm and genuine love. From the UMM’s tasty hotdogs and hamburgers to the yummy table of covered dishes and desserts. The Jukebox of old familiar tunes and, of course, the medley presented by Dwight Harro and Joe Plemmons and our celebration of Pastor Mikes 35th Birthday, provided the perfect outdoor atmosphere. The Classic Car show which included 11 vintage cars, trucks, and a 1948 camper made for much nostalgia and great conversations.
BHUMC is blessed to have such a wonderful group of dedicated parishioners. Many thanks to all of you for your loyalty and hard work!

We are THOROUGHLY enjoying our study of Making Sense of the
Bible, a study by Adam Hamilton. If we're truthful with ourselves, we may admit that the world’s bestselling, most-read, and most-loved book is also one of the most confusing. Who decided which books made it into the scriptures and why? Is the Bible ever wrong? Did Jesus really teach that everyone who is not a Christian will be assigned to hell? Why would Paul command women to “keep silent in the church?” Do you wonder about some of these questions, too?? Come grow in your faith and friendships at Just Coffee! We meet every Sunday during Sunday School in the Fellowship Hall.

Operation Christmas Child
During the month of October we will be collecting toy items for this year's Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes! Here are some suggestions of items to donate:
Toy trucks/cars Puzzles
Glow sticks card games/travel games
Soccer ball with pump (deflated to fit--check at Five Below!) Tennis ball or other small balls
Dress up items (crowns, etc) Small books
No army men or toy weapons, please! We have plenty of stuffed toys for the boxes already.
The collection box will be downstairs by the kitchen and each month we will collect a different category of items to fill shoeboxes for children around the world.
Last year Bermuda Hundred UMC participated in this ministry for the third year in a row, and it was quite a success! We had a shoebox packing party and were able to deliver 124 shoebox
gifts to the collection center in November 2015! If you helped last year, thank you! If not, we hope you will consider getting involved this year!
You can also pack your own box if you would prefer--the process is very simple: 1. Pick up a brochure with the box tags at church OR you can print one online
2. Fill your box (it can be a cardboard shoebox or plastic shoebox, wrapped or unwrapped--just wrap the lid separately!) with gifts and hygiene items for a boy or girl in the age range you select
on your box tag (visit http://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/pack-a-shoe-box/ for item ideas
and instructions). If you need help picking an age range, OCC receives the fewest boxes for boys ages 2-4 and 10-14
and could use more of these! 3. Include $7 for shipping of your box--either place a check in the envelope in the brochure or pay
the amount online (paying online allows you to find out what country your box ends up in!) 4. Bring your shoebox to BHUMC by Sunday, November 13 for delivery to the collection center.
If you have any questions, please contact Jessica Mathis at 571-6250 or [email protected].
This is a wonderful ministry project to do with your children to teach them about helping others and sharing the joy of Jesus--what true Christmas spirit is all about.

MINI-CRAFT SHOW TO BENEFIT CCHASM OCTOBER 16TH - We look forward to seeing all of you at the mini-craft show to benefit CCHASM. As you know, CCHASM does a great job feeding thousands of people for Thanksgiving, providing a full meal with all the trimmings for our neighbors who would not have food to celebrate the holiday. Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Church is a supporter of their efforts through the year and especially at this special time of the year. Doris and Frank Linkous work for days at the fair grounds sorting and distributing the many bags of food. Doris and Frank are very dedicated to this mission project and we would like to support them as we did last year by raising funds to purchase the food.
On Sunday, October 16th the mini-craft show will be open for business in the Fellowship Hall at the end of the first worship service at 9:30AM and will stay open until 10:45AM, at which time we will close for the 11AM service. At 12 Noon we will be open for business again for those attending the 11AM service. Last year this small show netted over $800 for CCHASM and we hope to do the same again this year.
We will have many crafts made by ladies and gentlemen in the church as well as baked items, pickles, jams and jellies. If you would like to bake something for the show, we will be happy to accept it - our members really like home-made items - both food and craft items.
As always, we appreciate your support so much, as we endeavor to help others doing our best to be the hands and feet of Jesus in our own neighborhood. If you have any questions, please contact Betty Forbes at 530-2055 or [email protected]

As part of our Missions Program, we would like to welcome back home our young service men and women who have been deployed and will now be stationed at Fort Lee. They return to a
dorm type environment and are in need of a lot of items to help them adjust to being home. Returning at all times of the day or night, these items will make their first days home easier. Please remember that they will be tired, hungry, ready to take a shower and to wash their clothes. Items in need are the food items like we collect for the backpacks, plus personal hygiene products, and items to wash clothes like Tide Pods and clothes baskets. To make things even better, a nice card telling them how proud we are of them and thanking them for their service. We would also like to work with the youth to have a pizza party at the USO. Our children can help out by making welcome home cards. Everyone enjoys a card.
(Please note that their expected arrival is during the first week of November 2016.) - Mary Simmons, Missions Team Member

Missions
United Methodist Women A Big Thank You for a successful yard sale! We appreciate all those that donated items, came to purchase items and especially for those folks that worked so hard on Friday and Saturday. We raised $807.50 for our mission projects, met a lot of new people and had an opportunity to invite several first timers to church. We would love to have you participate in our spring yard sale. "Treasures" to sell and helping hands are always welcome. We will be announcing the date for the spring yard sale soon, so start saving things now.
On Sunday, September 25th, Doris Morefield, Doris Linkous, Mattie Rogers and Betty Forbes attended the District UMW meeting in Emporia. We were very excited and pleased to win so many awards for our work over the last year. The awards will be formally presented to us at the November meeting by Sally McGrath, James River District President. It will be a time to celebrate a great year and lots of hard work. Our chapter had the most Rainbow Women in the James River District with three members contributing $60.00 each for special mission and recognition projects, they were: Doris Morefield, Mattie Rogers and Betty Forbes. Five women in our chapter received Reading Program Certificates and we were honored that Lilly Enz read the most books of any person in the James River District with 27 books read. We are proud of you Lilly! Lilly does a great job encouraging our UMW members to read and she certainly leads by example.
The next district function will be Fall Day Apart on November 6th, 3PM at Fort Grove UMC in Stony Creek. The speaker will be presenting a program on Environmental Justice - "Be Just, Be Green". Anyone is invited to attend and we will be carpooling. Just let Doris Morefield or Betty Forbes know if you would like to attend. These meetings are great opportunities for fun and fellowship with other UMW members.
Our next meeting is set for October 17th in the Grundy Parlor. The speakers for the evening will be Tabitha Strickler and Tina Spain, our two attendees to the Young Women's Retreat. We look forward to hearing about the retreat and catching the excitement of this group of young women in the Virginia Conference.
The last week of October, you will be seeing the Mitten Trees go up in the church. I know, just can't believe we are already getting ready for Christmas. As you shop this month, don't forget to pick up hats, gloves, scarves, socks and underpants to be distributed to the elementary schools in our area. You will be hearing more about this fun and very much needed mission project as we decorate our "Mitten Trees" with all sorts of garments.
Thank you for all your support this year and special thanks for helping us have such a successful year. We look forward to seeing all the women of the church at our October 17th meeting. We had our first male attendee, Pastor Mike at our September meeting and it was quite a treat. -Doris Morefield, UMW President

Earn. Save. Give. September 2016 – Continued Stewardship Success
BHUMC,
3 Quarters of the way to our goal - GREAT JOB! Only 3 months to go and if we continue this commit-ment throughout the remainder of the year we will hit our annual goal for the 4th consecutive year. Thank you! Keep Going!
As we continue to drive towards our 2016 goal, we ask that everyone begin thinking about 2017 and how we can give, share, and contribute in the same successful fashion as we have in the past or more. In prepa-ration for next year, please begin considering your personal commitment amounts, consistency and how to challenge yourselves to give more in sharing of all God has blessed us with - culminating with our annual Consecration Sunday in early November. Our momentum of giving of time, gifts and talents has been amazing and can continue to thrive to new, unbelievable, Godly blessed levels in 2017 and beyond. Please begin praying for the upcoming Consecration Sunday, so that we all rise to the challenge again.
Reminder – WE NEED YOU, our hope is to expand the committee, our reach and our sharing – if any-one is interested is joining the stewardship committee, please jump in – we would love to expand the team in 2017 (see/contact Dave Steinbraker for any questions or to inquire about becoming part of the Steward-ship committee).
Thank you to all and in God’s Grace, Your stewardship committee, Dave Steinbraker, Dorothy Mooney, Ann McNinch, Charles Woodard and Bill Talley V
