separating Western Europe from the Eastern Bloc and the Soviet Union. It stood from 1961 to 1989, when it was torn down after the fall of the Soviet Union. During the time it stood, over

5,000 people escaped across it and almost 200 died in their attempts to do so.

Designed by German architect Paul Wallot, the Reichstag was constructed to serve as a house for the first parliament of the German Empire known as the

Reichstag, hence the naming of the building. The creation of this building lasted ten years, from 1884 to 1894, though it wasn’t until 1916, during the

First World War, that the inscription “Dem Deutschen Volke” (meaning, “To the German People”) was added. Wilhelm II, the last German Emperor and King of Prussia, had previously disapproved of the addition. At present, the Reichstag serves as the seat of the German Bundestag, the modern German parliament.

Explore the Holocaust Memorial after Supper at

Lutter and Wegner

Lutter and Wegner is only 0.6 miles from the Holocaust Memorial and is a popular gathering spot in Berlin offering both German and Austrian cuisine. This option is a bit more expensive, with dinner

platter prices ranging from 22-28 euros, though the food is sure to please. Lutter and Wegner produces sekt, a type of sparkling wine, which would surely add a nice touch to our family's final

night in Berlin. (For the parents, anyway!)

The Holocaust Memorial is a great place to take the family in order to appreciate a little bit of the history of Berlin. The Memorial, designed by Peter Eisenman and erected in May 2006, is a

dedication to all of the Jews who were murdered before and during World War II when Hitler was in power. This monument is an awe-inspiring and sombre reminder of the atrocities that were

committed in Germany during a very dark part of history. The monument occupies 205,000 square feet of land, which is full of 2,711 blank, non-descript stone slabs that are each individually

unique in size and shape and is open all the time, year round. The architect hoped that the monument would give visitors a disorientating feeling, one which they would remember for the rest of their lives. In the center of this field of slabs is an underground information center where visitors will find information on families and individuals whose lives were destroyed by the Nazi

party. It is a sight that no visitor to Berlin should miss!
