Funding for a PhD through Individual Research

Many doctoral candidates work as research orteaching assistants for a university professor, and arepaid a competitive salary. Various German research

organizations and foundations provide funding forPhD students.

Funding for a PhD in a Structured Program

PhD students at International Max Planck ResearchSchools or in Research Training Groups can obtaingrants for up to three years to finance their studies.

for the promotion of junior researchers. Itis responsible for developing strategies to providedoctoral candidates and postdoctoral fellows withoptimum support. DRS also serves as a frameworkencompassing the outstanding structured doctoralprograms with an international focus offered by FreieUniversität. It has developed coherent standards in itsprograms and introduced a comprehensive trainingprogram.

Currently, around 900 doctoral candidates areenrolled in one of DRS's 25 highly-competitivedoctoral degree programs in the Humanities, SocialSciences, Area Studies, Natural and Life Sciences.DRS doctoral candidates benefit from excellenttraining and an educational environment where theycan develop their full potential to achieve academicand professional goals.

The DRS Professional Development Program, whichcovers a wide range of subject areas, prepares doctoralcandidates to engage in research and teaching acrosstraditional disciplinary boundaries.

umboldt Graduate School is an umbrellaorganisation for doctoral education atHumboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Its main

tasks are to ensure quality standards in itsprograms and improve the conditions for doctoralcandidates in general.

Humboldt Graduate School offers a wide range ofservices for its members as well as for individualdoctoral candidates, including training in keycompetencies and mentoring as well as guidanceand help for international candidates.

niversität der Künste Berlin (UdK) is one ofthe biggest, most diversified and traditionaluniversities of the arts worldwide.

The teaching offered at the four colleges of Fine Art,Design, Music and Performing Arts as well as at theCentral Institute of Further Education encompassesthe full spectrum of the arts and related academicstudies in more than 40 courses. Having the right toconfer doctorates and post-doctoral qualifications,the University of the Arts in Berlin is also one ofGermany’s few art colleges with full universitystatus.

Research at UdK covers a wide field: fromexperiments in art and design to applied researchand classical research in art-related scientific fields.It is possible to work for a doctorate in any subjectarea at the individual colleges where the universitycan provide appropriately qualified supervision byacademic staff. ounded in 1991, the Universität Potsdam hasdeveloped to a unique center for science andtechnology within Germany. Five faculties

otsdam Graduate School (PoGS) strives toensure optimum conditions during the PhDand Postdoc phase and offers an attractive

research and funding environment for earlystage researchers. It provides practical and financialassistance by awarding subsidies towards travelexpenses and publication costs as well as proof-reading of professional publications in English.

Within PoGS, young researchers can profit from furthereducation opportunities, such as a wide range ofadvanced training and qualification courses in differentacademic and non-academic fields. Additionally, the

he Berlin School of Integrative Oncology (BSIO)is a joint graduate school of the Charité, HU, FUand non-university research institutions.

BSIO, which is funded under the Excellence Initiativeby the German Federal Ministry of Education andResearch, offers an interdisciplinary program.Researchers in Haematology, Oncology, Genetics,Biochemistry, Surgery, Radiology, Computer Science aswell as Social Studies and the Humanities collaborateclosely at BSIO to train tomorrow’s molecularoncologists and physicians.

Focus

Cancer is one of the major challenges facing medicineand society. Fighting this disease is the focus of workat BSIO. Its mission is to understand the individualmolecular blueprint of a tumor and develop customizedtherapy plans for patients. Such “personalized cancermedicine” is one of the graduate school’s core areas.

BSIO features a comprehensive curriculum as wellas excellent research opportunities and createssubstantive dialogue between bio-scientific researchand clinical application, aiming to expedite the develop-ment of therapies. At the same time, experimentallab research receives important input, driving it togive the highest priority to urgent problems of clinicalcancer therapy. Open to excellent M.Sc. (and B.Sc.)

graduates in natural sciences as well as medicalstudents and graduates, BSIO offers a structuredthree-year doctoral program including opportunitiesfor international lob rotations, thus educating a newgeneration of cancer researchers.

he Berlin School of Mind and Brain is aninternational, English-language researchschool based at HU Berlin. Founded in 2006

as part of Germany‘s Excellence Initiative, itoffers a unique interdisciplinary three-year doctoralprogram in the mind/brain sciences.

In 2013, an interdisciplinary two-year Master's and apostdoctoral program were added to the portfolio. Theschool thus promotes the scientific development of junior researchers at all career stages.

FocusOf particular interest are research questions thatfall on the borders between the mind sciences (e.g.philosophy, behavioral and cognitive psychology,linguistics) and the brain sciences (e.g. neurology,psychiatry, neurobiology, computational neuro-science): consciousness and perception, decision-making, language, lifespan development, mentaldisorders and brain dysfunction, social cognition,and the philosophy of mind.

PhD candidates are encouraged to work on theirown initiative on any projects that are relevant tointerdisciplinary questions relating to these researchtopics. All PhD candidates acquire a strong foundationfor interdisciplinary work by attending classes acrossthe participating disciplines and exploring research

methods and topics to which they have not beenpreviously exposed. The school has a facultycomprising 60 distinguished researchers, includingfive Max Planck directors, 50 PhD candidates, 30alumni, 20 postdoctoral fellows, and cohorts of 25master students per year.

The Berlin-Brandenburg School for Regenerative

Therapies (BSRT) is a joint graduate school ofCharité, HU and FU in collaboration with theTU, Universität Potsdam and other renowned

research institutions in the Max Planck Society aswell as the Helmholtz and Leibniz Associations. Itis funded under the Excellence Initiative. Its centralgoal is to provide the educational basis that will enableyoung scientists to carry out interdisciplinary researchon endogenous tissue regeneration with the aim oftranslating their results into therapeutic approaches.

Focus

BSRT offers programs for national and internationaldoctoral researchers and postdocs with a backgroundin medicine, natural and material sciences, andengineering who want to work at the cutting-edge ofinterdisciplinary research in Regenerative Medicine.The young scientists are introduced to modern scientificpractices and state-of-the-art technology in workshopsdesigned to fit their needs. In-depth education inthe specific disciplines as well as training acrossthe disciplines provides an all-round education in celland molecular biology, bioengineering, biotechnologyand biomaterials. The complementary courses impartskills such as communication, presentation andentrepreneurship in order to prepare the young

scientists for a future career in or outside academia.They benefit from a unique approach to fosteringcollaborative science (BioThinking) and work withina strong and intellectually stimulating network ofscientists.

The PhD Program Computational Neuroscience

is part of the International Graduate Programat the Bernstein Center for ComputationalNeuroscience Berlin (BCCN Berlin) involving

the three Berlin universities TU, HU, FU, Charité,Universität Potsdam and the Max-Delbrück-Center.It is financially supported by the Research TrainingGroup Sensory Computation in Neural Systems whichis based at TU Berlin and funded by the GermanResearch Foundation.

Focus

The Program is interdisciplinary and strongly research-oriented. Understanding the functioning of the brainrequires collaboration between neurobiologists, neuro-psychologists, cognitive scientists, medical researchers,computer scientists, mathematicians, physicists, andengineers, as well as active cooperation betweentheoretical and experimental approaches.

Our PhD candidates have the ability to communicateacross these diverse disciplines and work on highlychallenging projects that allow them to make their owncontributions to the fast growing field of neurosciencewith autonomous research work. Research for thedoctoral project forms the major part of the structuredprogram, complemented by course work. Each PhD

candidate follows an individualized curriculum andis supervised by a doctoral committee. PhD candidatesare required to earn 15 ECTS credit points in advancedtopics related to their research subject and 10 ECTScredit points for acquiring general skills.

The integrated research training group (IRTG)

at the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC)Priming and Memory of Organismic Responsesto Stress aims to qualify PhD candidates to

The Master's and PhD program Clinical

Exercise Science (CES) is the acquisition ofresearch based and occupational skills forprofessions in the field of exercise, prevention

and rehabilitation. The CES curriculum is dividedinto clinical applications for patients as well asfor recreational and high-performance athletes.Emphasis is put on theoretical, methodologicaland experimental academic education.

FocusThe scientific curriculum encompasses the effectsof physical activity on disease prevention andrehabilitation with the focus on exercise physiologyand physical therapy. Practical education entailscollaborations with hospitals as well as in- and out-patient rehabilitation clinics. Furthermore, practicaland scientific education is facilitated by cooperationbetween the regional Olympic Sports Centre andthe University.

Participants receive academic and methodologicaleducation in Scientific Methods and Evaluation. Otherspecific topics are taught in the modules Exercise inPrevention and Rehabilitation and Applied Methods.The program includes advanced modules in ScientificQualification and Applied Methods. International Doctorate for ExperimentalApproaches to Language And Brain (IDEALAB)is a laboratory-based program offered jointly

by an international consortium of 19 EU and non-EUinstitutions. Its aim is to train doctoral candidates tomeet the new scientific challenges in a rapidly developingfield and conduct original and independent researchon experimental and clinical aspects of language and thebrain in unimpaired populations of adults and childrenas well as in language impaired children and adults.

Focus

The three-year IDEALAB program is module-basedwith a fully-integrated curriculum. Every doctoralcandidate receives training in research and transferableskills at a summer school and annual winter schools inthe following areas:

The Research Training Group "Intrapersonal

Developmental Risk Factors in Childhoodand Adolescence: A Longitudinal Perspective(PIER-Study)", which is located at Universität

Potsdam, involves senior researchers from differentfields of psychology and offers positions for 12 PhDcandidates. The program includes courses on researchmethods and developmental psychopathology againstthe backdrop of long-term studies of the factors affectingthe development of children and adolescents. Thelanguage of the graduate school is primarily German.

Focus

The focus of our research is on intrapersonal riskfactors which are assumed to mediate betweengenetic and social influences in three domains ofpsychological problems with relatively high prevalencerates in childhood and adolescence: problems oflearning and achievement, externalizing and inter-nalizing psychological problems, and eating- and

weight-related problems.

Risk factors investigated in our projects includeaspects of information processing, cognitive styles,affect regulation, and motivational variables. These aremeasured by means of questionnaires, achievementtests, and physiological data obtained from children,

parents, and teachers. PhD positions are open tocandidates with a Master’s degree or a diploma and lastfor up to three years. PhD theses focus on special riskor protective factors with regard to one out of the threeabove mentioned areas.

The IMPRS on Multiscale Bio-Systems addressesthe fundamental levels of biosystems as provided bymacromolecules in aqueous solutions, molecularrecognition between these building blocks, freeenergy transduction by molecular machines as wellas structure formation and transport in cells andtissues. he Graduate School of Plant Sciences at theDahlem Centre of Plant Sciences provides astructured program for doctoral candidates in

the various subjects encompassed by the plantsciences. Plants are the basis for life on earth. Theyperceive and transform solar energy, they consumecarbon dioxide and produce oxygen, and they providemankind with food, raw materials and medicine.

Today, plant life is threatened by extinction ofspecies and rapid climate change. Therefore, theunderstanding, preservation and sustainable useof plants are of increasing relevance. To achieve acomprehensive understanding of diverse aspects ofplant life an integrative approach in research andteaching is needed.

Focus

A wide range of different research topics is covered,including studies of how plants perceive biotic andabiotic stimuli, how information is transmitted withinplants through hormones and other signal molecules,

how plant development is genetically controlled, howplants interact with other organisms, and how traitsevolve and new plant species arise. The research groupsinvolved in the Graduate School of Plant Sciences areintegrated into national and international researchprograms. Doctoral candidates are also taught

transferable skills, which cover knowledge transfer,scientific management, and foreign language skills.

Exploiting the substantial greenhouse gas mitigationpotentials of agriculture requires viable measures onthe farm scale. In the graduate school LandPaKT,

PhD candidates systematically analyze the mitigationpotentials and costs, and merge these options on thefarm scale. The most important sector of agriculture –rewetting organic soils, carbon sequestration inagricultural soils and livestock husbandry – areincluded in the analysis. Single and combinedmeasures are analyzed with regard to their overall

The Berlin International Graduate School ofNatural Sciences and Engineering (BIG-NSE) isa project run jointly by Technische Universität,Humboldt-Universität and Freie Universität

Berlin together with Universität Potsdam, the FritzHaber Institute and the Max Planck Institute of Colloidsand Interfaces. It is part of the DFG-financed Clusterof Excellence Unified Concepts in CATALYSIS(www.unicat.tu-berlin.de). Focus

BIG-NSE offers an attractive, structured PhD program,allowing candidates to complete their PhDs underexcellent conditions within three years. a Master’s degree in chemistry, biology, physics orengineering. he Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) is a joint graduate school of the mathematicsdepartments of FU, HU and TU Berlin. It alsoincorporates a number of Research Training

Focus

“Mathematics as a whole“ is a leading principleof the BMS. Its focus encompasses fields that aretraditionally termed “pure“ or “applied“ mathematics,though we prefer not to make that distinction. he International Max Planck Research Schoolfor Computational Biology and ScientificComputing is a joint graduate program of theFU Berlin and the Max Planck Institute for

he International Research Training Group(ITRG) Dynamical Phenomena in ComplexNetworks is an international joint projectinvolving Brazilian and German scientists from

HU Berlin, the University of São Paulo, the PotsdamInstitute for Climate Impact Research, the NationalInstitute for Space Research and other institutions.The research group consists of physicists, biophysicists,mathematicians, geographers and climatologists.

The project offers 15 DFG-fellowships for PhDcandidates in Germany and a similar number fromthe Brazilian side.

Focus

Networks with complex topology have become a verypowerful approach for understanding large complexsystems in various fields of applications rangingfrom neuroscience, via engineering to sociologyand economics. IRTG studies the principles of self-organization in evolving complex networks.

To bring these principles closer to various applications,we investigate the influence of heterogeneity in thenetwork structure, multiscale time delays and stoch-asticity. These theoretical studies are connected withthe investigation of experimental and natural dynamicalnetworks of increasing complexity starting from lasers,via hybrid networks of neurons to the Earth system.

PhD candidates from Brazilian and German insti-tutions work on different aspects of their commonsubproject. IRTG provides a structured and modernstudy, training and soft-skills program, includingannual summer schools, workshops, dual supervisionand a six-month PhD candidate exchange program.

he International Max Planck ResearchSchool for Geometric Analysis, Gravitation andString Theory is a joint effort by the MPI forGravitational Physics, the Universität Potsdam,

FU and HU to support projects related to Einstein‘sgeneral theory of relativity in the broadest sense.Projects range from pure mathematics, the physics ofblack holes, gravitational waves and cosmology to themost recent efforts to reconcile Einstein‘s theory withquantum mechanics in the framework of superstringtheory and M theory.

Focus

The school is devoted to a wide range of aspects inthe area of theoretical gravitational physics. Theseinclude the mathematical and conceptual analysis ofEinstein's Field Equations as well as the examinationof problems of differential geometry that arise inphysical applications or are motivated by them.

A second focus of the research school is superstringtheory and its generalizations, as well as loop quantum

gravity. The goal here is to unify the theory of generalrelativity and quantum theory into a consistent theoryof quantum gravity.

MatSEC focuses on kesterite materials. Thesesemiconductors are very promising candidates foran absorber material in thin film solar cells as wellas for photoelectrodes for Hydrogen evolution fromwater under solar light. Kesterites are very similarto chalcopyrites. But they are made from non-toxic,earth-abundant and low-cost raw materials. Thedevelopments of these alternative materials forrenewable energy conversion, based on the use of

solar radiation, rely to a large extent on a profoundunderstanding of the multiscale origins of theirproperties. The school aims at developing structure-property relations enabling the evolution of tailor-made materials for these applications by combiningexperiments and theory. It encompasses insights ofmaterial science, crystallography, solid state physics,

solid state chemistry and scientific computing. Thisinterdisciplinary approach provides many benefits thatdevelop into much needed lifelong learning skills thatare essential to a student’s future learning.

he Postgraduate Study Program MicroenergySystems (MES) is funded by the Hans BoecklerFoundation and is located at the Center forTechnology and Society (ZTG) at Technische

Universität Berlin. In cooperation with other institutesat TU Berlin, other universities and the MicroenergySystem Association, MES promotes research combiningengineering, planning and social sciences.

Focus

Microenergy systems use local resources such as thesun, water, biomass or wind and transform them intoelectricity, heat, light or driving forces. They facilitatethe decentralized management of energy resourcesand the development of regional cycles and economicactivities possible.

The program explores the potential of systems whichare characterized by aspects like simplicity, repair-friendliness, a high tolerance to disruption, extendibility,

modularity and longevity, and, whenever possible, areestablished within the region.

The main objective is to develop strategies andinstruments for the conceptual design, manufactureand sustainable implementation of microenergy systemsin structurally weak regions of developing as well as

developed countries. Therefore, research doesnot focus only on technical aspects, but also on howsociological, economic and societal contexts needto be shaped in order to realize a productive andsustainable impact in these structurally weak areas.

he Research Training Group bundles the broadexpertise in graduate education at HU Berlin/FU Berlin and U Amsterdam/U Leiden in thefields of arithmetic algebraic and complex

algebraic geometry. Questions about the interplaybetween the arithmetic and geometry of moduli spaces,which are related to the arithmetic theory of auto-morphic forms, are investigated. The RTG is a certifiedunit of the Berlin Mathematical School (BMS); thusmembers benefit from BMS's general portfolio of offerswith regard to soft skills training and other aspects.

he Leibniz-Graduate School of MolecularBiophysics aims for an alliance between basicbiophysical and biomolecular research. Bio-physical techniques are becoming increasingly

significant in the analysis of biomolecular processes.At the same time, a wide range of methods is requiredin order to obtain a complete description of complexsystems. The participating institutions are equippedwith an attractive range of instruments (BESSY-II,NMR Centre Berlin-Buch, EM-Ultrastructure network,EPR spectroscopy) offering PhD candidates theopportunity to acquire various techniques.

FocusThe Graduate School focuses on the investigationof protein-protein interactions. These are the basisof enzymatic processes, of perceptive and cognitiveevents in the cell, and underlie cellular degradationas well as protein aggregation processes.

Knowledge of the structural basis of proteininteraction mechanisms is indispensable for the

understanding of biological function. At the sametime, protein-protein and protein-lipid interactionsare important for conformational changes of glyco-proteins during viral infection and assembly. Thesestructural data enable the targeted synthesis andmodification of small molecules of therapeutic

he FMP Graduate School offers a structureddoctoral training program at the Leibniz-Institut für Molekulare Pharmakologie (FMP).Itself a non-university research institute, FMP’s

Graduate School is open to PhD candidates from alluniversities in Berlin and Brandenburg working at theinstitute. It also accommodates PhD candidates, whoare already participating in other graduate programs.

Focus

The FMP Graduate School focuses on molecularpharmacology in line with the Leibniz institute’s

areas of specialization: Structural Biology, MolecularPhysiology, Cell Biology and Chemical Biology. Researchareas include the finding, synthesis and character-ization of bioactive reagents, the identification oftheir cellular targets and mechanism of action aswell as detailed structural analysis of ligand-target-interaction, mainly by employing NMR.

PhD candidates at FMP participate in thesis committeemeetings, scientific training, and career development.

Thesis committee meetings are held once a year andcomprise a progress report, a short presentation and adiscussion with committee members.

As part of scientific training, members of the graduateschool participate in institute seminars, conferences,

Multivalency as an Organisational and ActionPrinciple in Chemistry focuses on the education

of PhD candidates in the field of multivalent interactions.Multivalency is an important concept in e.g. the organi-zation of matter or in biological recognition processes.The understanding of multivalency unifies scientificapproaches from mathematics, physics and chemistryand yields realistic applications in molecular biology.

FocusThe aim of CRC is to improve the understanding ofmultivalency and the design of new multivalentmolecules with special properties. With more than 50PhD candidates from different background, located atdifferent research institutions in Berlin, the focus ofthe integrated graduate school is the interdisciplinaryeducation of the PhD candidates. The International Max Planck Research SchoolPrimary Metabolism and Plant Growth (IMPRS-

PMPG) is a joint doctoral program run by UPand the Max Planck Institute of Molecular

Plant Physiology (MPI-MP). IMPRS-PMPG involvesresearch groups from the MPI-MP and UP’s Instituteof Biochemistry and Biology. The facilities and facultyoffer an excellent environment for research in modernplant science.

Focus

Plant growth, seen from a physiological point of viewas resource acquisition and its conversion into plantbiomass, is the main focus of IMPRS-PMPG. Theresearch follows a systems-oriented approach, using Arabidopsis thaliana and other model plants andcombining cutting-edge analytical techniques,molecular phenotyping (-omics) technologies andphysiology with bioinformatics and modelingapproaches. Research is at the core of the inter-

disciplinary doctoral program. Seminars and coursessupport doctoral candidates in acquiring scientificexpertise and transferable skills. The PhD candi-dates have a primary supervisor and a PhD advisorycommittee for guidance and support. The Leibniz Graduate School for QuantitativeSpectroscopy in Astrophysics is a collaborative

project between the Leibniz Institute forAstrophysics Potsdam (AIP) and the Institute

for Physics and Astronomy at Universität Potsdam (UP).It is embedded in the framework of AIP, UP, and DESY/Zeuthen for structured doctoral training in Astrophysics.

Focus

The Graduate School is the only program in the

Berlin/Potsdam region with a focus on astrophysicalresearch. It provides an integrative environment foryoung scientists, promoting the application of spectro-scopic methods to cutting-edge astrophysical researchtopics from solar physics, via stellar and extragalacticresearch, to cosmology. The Integrated Research Training Group(IRTG) provides a platform for structured and

complementary training of all PhD candidateswithin the Collaborative Research Center (CRC)

Scaffolding of Membranes - Molecular Mechanismsand Cellular Functions. It fills an important gap inpostgraduate education in the Berlin area in the fieldof membrane biology. Moreover, IRTG provides anexcellent framework to integrate research and post-graduate education at the participating universitiesand non-university research institutions.

Focus

The CRC's aim is to elucidate the molecularmechanisms by which dynamically organized protein-protein assemblies scaffold cellular membranes andexert cellular functions. The IRTG program aims toeducate PhD candidates in a multidisciplinary approachcombining cell and molecular biology, bio-chemistry,structural biology and optical (bio)physics.

Service orientation is a promising concept toconstruct large, distributed software systems.

The Research Training Group Service-oriented Architectures for the integration of Software-

based Processes, exemplified by Health Care Systemsand Medical Technology (SOAMED) seeks to providethe theoretical foundations to substantiate the currentapproach, which is pragmatically focused and service-oriented. Health care processes as well as technicalmedical systems are presently dominated by structuresand processes that can be substantially improvedby the concepts and methods developed by doctoral

candidates at this Graduate School.

Focus

The software architecture paradigm of serviceorientation has evolved from very pragmatic problemsand backgrounds. Little attention has been directed totheoretical and conceptual problems in the area. TheResearch Training Group works towards underpinning

the service-oriented approach with theoretical foun-dations by integrating established as well as emergingsoftware engineering procedures. This approach aimsat a decisive improvement of concepts, methods, andtool support for service-oriented system construction.The program's scope for innovation is obvious and farreaching: health care systems as well as medical

systems are extremely diverse, yet tightly connectedareas. Corresponding software processes are sensitiveto failure, privacy, time, cost etc. and therefore deservebest practice development processes. SOAMEDcontributes to this challenge.

FocusLectures held by experts at HU, FU, UP and AEI covertopics such as quantum field theory, Hopf algebrasor Atiyah-Singer index theory. The main emphasislies on intensive three-day block seminars, coveringanything from the basic physics of general relativityand quantum mechanics to quantum field theory anddeformation quantization, or to mathematical areas likealgebraic geometry. The following seminars cover

stratified spaces and geometric quantization. PhDcandidates can suggest subjects they are interestedin. Focus

Many real life phenomena encountered on tradingfloors, in materials undergoing phase transitions, inthe genealogy of populations, or in terrestrial glacialrecords can only be adequately modeled and under-stood by incorporating elements of randomness. Theirstochastic modeling involves the description of systemcomponents on different spatial and temporal scalesand requires a broad range of modern techniques fromprobability theory. The Collaborative Research Center (CRC) aimsat increasing the efficiency of stationary gas

turbines and aero-engines by harnessingunsteady phenomena inherent in the system.

Scientists from TU Berlin, FU Berlin, RWTH Aachen,and DLR jointly work on aspects related to unsteadyturbomachinery.

The CRC includes an integrated research traininggroup that provides PhD candidates with a structuredprogram for scientific and inter-disciplinary training.

Focus

Growing global demand for energy and transportplaces a strong need for improving gas turbineefficiency. Traditional technology, however, allows onlyincremental improvements. The goal of the CRC isto significantly increase efficiency by making use of -instead of trying to mitigate - dynamic phenomena.Two new unsteady combustion concepts are introduced

that approximate thermodynamically more efficientconstant-volume heat release. Unsteady compressorand turbine aerodynamics and blade cooling areinvestigated both experimentally and numerically.To harness the unsteady phenomena, mathematicalmodeling, model reduction, and control engineeringplay a central role. PhD topics are closely tied to the

CRC's scientific focus. The integrated research traininggroup offers PhD candidates a thematic lecture series,an annual summer school, and various seminars onscientific topics related to the CRC's research topics ofthe CRC as well as interdisciplinary aspects.

The Doctoral Certificate Program in AgriculturalEconomics (DCPIAE) offers the first permanent,

structured training of PhD candidates in agri-cultural, food and environmental economics

in Germany. The aim is to increase educational qualityand efficiency in dealing with dissertation topics througha systematically organized theory and methods coursecurriculum. DCPIAE is conducted jointly by all Germanfaculties offering agricultural economics.

The Alexander von Humboldt Institute forInternet and Society (HIIG) aims at contributing

towards a better understanding of the inter-dependence between society and the Internet

as well as to give everyone the opportunity to helpshape the digital, networked future. The Institute wasfounded by HU, UdK and the Social Science ResearchCentre Berlin in conjunction with the Hans BredowInstitute Hamburg.

Focus

The objective of HIIG’s doctoral program is to promoteexceptionally talented, international early-stageresearchers who are interested in developing aninnovative, interdisciplinary doctoral project in thefield of internet and society.

Doctoral candidates belong to one of HIIG's researchgroups. Besides specific mentoring agreements,other facilities include regular presentations and

mentoring appointments designed to further thedevelopment of independent research. There is alsoa separate soft-skills program and the possibility offinancial support for a temporary research stay abroadfor outstanding doctoral candidates. Candidates at anystage of their doctoral thesis are free to apply. Thecontract period is usually limited to two years, with an

The Berlin Graduate School for TransnationalStudies (BTS) is a joint endeavor by FU Berlin,

the Hertie School of Governance, and the SocialScience Research Center Berlin. It offers a

rigorous and dynamic English-language PhD programfor exceptionally-talented graduate students in thefield of transnational and international relations definedas an interdisciplinary field of research encompassingpolitical science, history, economics, law and relateddisciplines.

FocusBTS offers four primary research areas: globalization,governance, regional structures and the EU as trans-national polity.

The first deals with the causes and consequencesof globalization; the second investigates governancechallenges; the third focuses on analytical comparisonsof regional political, economic, and social structures;and the fourth deals with the EU as a transnationalpolity.

The PhD program consists of three years of study,starting in September of each year. The bulkof candidates' workload will take the form ofindependent thesis research. Apart from this, allcandidates are required to successfully complete

content-oriented survey courses, colloquia onresearch methods, and multidisciplinary skills work-shops. Candidates will also be required to presentthe results of their research regularly at researchcolloquia and at academic conferences.

he mission of the Berlin Graduate School ofSocial Science (BGSS) is to prepare doctoralresearchers from Germany and abroad for acareer as social or political scientists within

The Graduate School investigates the entirespectrum of what is referred to both historicallyand currently as Islam. The International Research Training Group(ITRG) Between Spaces is a binational German-

Mexican research and study program, locatedat FU's Institute for Latin American Studies.In cooperation with HU, UP, El Colegio de México,Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and theCentro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores enAntropología Social, IRTG enables highly qualified youngresearchers to write their thesis in an internationalenvironment. The main languages of IRTG are Spanishand English.

Focus

IRTG opens new perspectives on social and culturalglobalization research with an emphasis on LatinAmerica. The focus is on movements betweenvarious regions of the world and the consequentemergence of new spaces during the key phases ofglobalization. The close cooperation with Mexicanpartner institutions enables a combination of diverseperspectives and furthers joint empirical researchand theoretical debate. The study program is tailoredto the specific needs of PhD candidates. In additionto research-oriented seminars and close individualsupervision, it offers a wide range of events such aslecture series, research method workshops and guest

lectures. PhD candidates have access to supervisorsfrom both countries and benefit from different regionalacademic networks. They spend an extended periodstudying at the Mexican partner institutions and re-searching in Mexico or in other parts of Latin America.

The program focuses onhigh-quality systematic theory building, researchmethods training and professional skills.

FocusThe Doctoral Program in Business Research is a“hybrid” doctoral program providing structured PhDtraining in a format open to all doctoral candidatesin business administration, including those workingpart-time as a member of the research or teachingstaff in one of our departments. DPBR provides trainingin the design, methods, and publication of researchacross a range of fields in business studies. The mainelements of the DPBR program involve team-basedsupervision and taught courses in the followingthree areas: theory development, research methodstraining and professional skills. The Berlin Centre for Caspian Region Studiesat Freie Universität is an interdisciplinary

center bringing together scientists fromdifferent faculties, non-university, Berlin-basedresearch institutions, and think tanks dealing with theCaspian Region. The center is divided into researchareas conducting interdisciplinary work on questionsrelating to the Caspian Region. With research ineconomics, geography, law and political science atits core, the center reaches out to other disciplinesrelevant to understanding the issues affecting theCaspian Region.

Focus

The importance of the Caspian Region for regionaland global security has grown steadily. Due to newgeopolitical and economic conditions, problems inthe areas of law, politics and economy, as well ashighly complex environmental issues have becomeincreasingly relevant. Against this backdrop, theBerlin Centre for Caspian Region Studies offersan interdisciplinary PhD program: Caspian RegionEnvironmental and Energy Studies (CREES), bringingtogether research in political science, sociology, law,economics, history and earth science. he Centre for Contemporary History (ZZF) is aresearch institute in the Leibniz Association,based in Potsdam. It focuses on contemporaryGerman and European history during and

after the Cold War and places special emphasis onthe implementation of innovative theoretical andmethodological approaches.

ZZF offers an inspiring academic environmentand excellent support for currently more than 30PhD candidates. Most of them hold either third-party funded positions or fellowships.

FocusThe five departments’ central research themesinclude the history of communist societies, 20th century economic and social upheavals, culturalhistory of the political as well as the history of mediaand information societies. The PhD-Net Das Wissen der Literatur is abinational doctoral program, hosted by the

Institut für deutsche Literatur at HU. Theprogram closely collaborates with theDepartment of German at the University of California,Berkeley, the Department of German at PrincetonUniversity, and the Department of Germanic Languagesand Literatures at Harvard University in the USA.

The program’s working languages are Germanand English.

Focus

The PhD-Net offers German and international PhDcandidates a stimulating environment for cooperativeresearch, work, and discussion as well as a structuredcurriculum that ranges from coursework to subject-specific classes and methodological training.

The doctoral candidates in the PhD-Net study for up totwo terms abroad at the partner institutions. Duringthat time they participate in a specific teaching programwhile being supervised by an international facultymember. Besides six German candidates, the PhD-Netaccepts six international PhD candidates (from the US-American partner institutions) into its program eachyear. The focus on the relationship between knowledge

and literature responds to recent methodologicalconsiderations in literary studies and forms thebasis for the PhD-exchange and the joint academicinstruction and supervision of the doctoral projects.The PhD-Net is part of the Humboldt Graduate School.

FocusEDP III focuses on processes of inclusion and exclusionin Europe and at its borders by relating them to ongoingprocesses of democratic institution building, whichare mediated by cultural traditions and ideologies andtriggered by collective action and mobilization.

Focus

The CRC is concerned with the study of informationstructure in the various disciplines of linguistics,including psycholinguistics and computationallinguistics. The International Max Planck ResearchSchool on the Life Course (LIFE) is a joint

international PhD Program offered by the MaxPlanck Institute for Human Development, FU,HU, the Universities of Michigan, Virginia and Zurich.The target research of LIFE is the development ofhuman behavior from infancy to old age. LIFE adoptsan integrative and interdisciplinary approach toidentifying, understanding, and possibly amelioratingthe mechanisms and conditions that shape thehuman life course.

Focus

LIFE offers candidates unique training in the dynamicsof human behavior on different time scales. Theseinclude long-term changes, such as in the evolution ofculture and emergence of institutions of learning, andshort-term changes, such as in individual educationprocesses, lifespan development, and institutionallyregulated life-course processes. LIFE unifies a widerange of disciplines from the behavioral, computational

and social sciences as well as the neurosciences. As acollaborative research school, LIFE combines discipline-based training in the study of the life course with en-hanced interdisciplinary and international perspectives.

The graduate program Knowledge of the Artsis located at an institution where a variety of

arts are not only taught and researched butalso practiced.

The program sheds light on the processes of nego-tiation by which artistic knowledge is articulated andlegitimized. The program is financed by the GermanResearch Foundation (DFG).


Focus

The focus of the program is on knowledge of thearts, which is studied as an implicit, habituated,incorporated and process-orientated form ofknowledge.

Based on interdisciplinary collaboration of the arts,art history, media studies, philosophy, engineering andpedagogy, the graduate program is developing a model

for understanding how knowledge is generated in thearts and how the concept of art-related science can beconceptualized in a contemporary way.

The research program pursues forms of artisticknowledge as cultural techniques for deriving ideas.

The graduate program offers 12 grants for PhDcandidates as well as one post-doctoral position.

The doctoral program at FU Berlin's Institutefor Latin American Studies enables young

researchers to write their thesis in theirchosen areas of specialization (Cultural andSocial Anthropology, Gender Studies, History, Literatureand Cultures of Latin America, Economics, PoliticalSciences and Sociology) in the context of an inter-disciplinary and internationally oriented curriculumand research program. The program is largely concernedwith the states, cultures and societies of Latin America.The main languages are Spanish and English.

Focus

The program promotes innovative research on topicsconcerning Latin America, with a compulsory focuson interdisciplinary methods. From transregional,transcultural and comparative perspectives, researchprojects analyze current and historical problems ofLatin American societies in the context of globaliza-tion. The Ludwig Rosenberg Kolleg (LRK), named afterthe chairman of the Confederation of German

Trade Unions Ludwig Rosenberg (1903-1977),is an interdisciplinary PhD Research Groupfunded by the Hans-Böckler-Stiftung and affiliated tothe Moses Mendelssohn Center for European-JewishStudies Potsdam. Scholars and fellows will take partin a coordinated course program, a colloquium andspecific working groups.

Focus

LRK promotes excellent PhD projects focusing onthe historical relations between Labor Movementsand Modern Jewry from the mid-19th till the mid-20th centuries. This covers all forms of Jewish labororganizations, Jewish individuals engaged in therespective movements, the specific perception of the“Jewish question” in those movements, as well as theirattitude towards anti-Semitism. Fields of research are:

The Graduate Center (GC) at the GermanInstitute for Economic Research Berlin (DIW)provides excellent training in economics to PhDcandidates from around the world. Participants

receive both intensive academic training as well asindividually tailored supervision of their dissertations.

The GC allows PhD candidates to apply their knowledgein the professional research environment of DIW Berlin,one of Germany’s leading economic think-tanks.

Focus

The GC offers a four-year program of in-depth training

in economics leading to a PhD from one of Berlin’suniversities. The first year comprises a curriculumof high-level courses in microeconomics, macro-economics and econometrics. During the last threeyears PhD candidates are provided with on-the-jobtraining in one of DIW Berlin’s research departments.

Typical research areas include applied topics inmacroeconomics, microeconomics, public economics,environmental economics, and social policy.

he PhD program on Public Economics andInequality is a joint graduate school run bythe Economics Department at FU Berlinand the Hans Böckler Foundation. It offers a

coordinated course program taught by both local andinternational researchers.

Focus

Economic inequality has been on the rise in manyindustrialized countries since the 1980s. Thisphenomenon has raised a number of issues whichshape the focus of the graduate school:

(1) Income inequality and redistribution over thelife-cycle

(2) Behavioral economic analysis of social welfaresystems

(3) Intergenerational mobility and capital taxation(4) Taxation of economic elites and their resilience(5) Empirical analysis of tax and social policy

In the first year the PhD candidates attend lectureson theory and empirical methods in the field of public

economics. Internationally renowned experts teachshort courses of three lectures on a subtopic ofthe program and discuss the candidates’ researchproposals. This allows candidates to align theirresearch with the latest scientific results at an early

stage to the latest scientific results. In the secondand third years, candidates focus on their research

and present their work in the graduate school’s weeklyseminar, at workshops organized by the graduate schooland at international conferences. Candidates are en-couraged to undertake a research stay abroad.

The German-French doctoral program“Syntagmata and Collocations in the Sentence

and in Discourse. Structure, Fixation, Gramma-ticalization” offers structured doctoral trainingin the field of linguistics. It is funded by the Deutsch-Französische Hochschule / Université Franco-Allemandeand takes place at Universität Potsdam and theUniversité Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense. Grantsare provided to help cover expenses for travel andaccommodation at the partner university.

Focus

The doctoral program investigates collocationsand their emergence in European languages. Undersyntagmata and collocations we consider two extremesin the connectivity of words in their occurrence in textsand discourses. Whereas syntagmata are understoodto denote sentence constituents of more than one wordthat, as a rule, can be assembled freely, the formationof collocations is limited by semantic conditions. Thesyntagma is regarded as a combination of two or more

consecutive units.

The program focuses on the following areas:

(a) In-depth study of the significance-orientedcollocation concept and elaboration of the semantic

The THESys Graduate Program is the doctoralprogram of HU’s Integrative Research Institute

The THESys Graduate Program offers PhD candidatesan ideal environment for doctoral research within thescientific scope of IRI THESys. he International Graduate Research TrainingGroup (ITRG) "The World in the City" is acollaboration between TU, HU and FU Berlin,Columbia, Fordham, NYU, City University of

New York, University of Toronto and York Universityin Toronto.

The interdisciplinary program is located at theCenter for Metropolitan Studies at TU Berlin.

Focus

The focus is on the following questions:

(1) How has metropolitanism developed since thenineteenth century? To what extent did individualforms of metropolitanism emerge during differenttime periods and in different areas of the world?What overarching features, transfers, orappropriations exist in a global world?

(2) What impact did the nineteenth century’s surgeof globalization have on the development ofmetropoles? Which role did/do external networks

play in the internal construction of metropolitanidentities, everyday practices, and architectures?

(3) To what extent do modern metropoles enableprocesses of globalization in the first place?

Each cycle of the program runs for 3 years. The 12fully-funded doctoral fellows, 2 post-docs, and 3associated PhD candidates come from a variety ofdisciplines. Moreover, the program offers an intensivecurriculum and advising program, including a researchstay abroad.

he Zentrum für jüdische Studien Berlin-Brandenburg (ZJS), founded in 2012, is a jointproject between HU, FU, TU, UP, the AbrahamGeiger Kolleg and the Moses Mendelssohn

Center for European-Jewish Studies. Funded throughthe German Ministry of Education and Research(BMBF), the Center has three focus areas: to educatethe next generation, to connect the existing, diverserange of Jewish Studies as well as to contribute tointernationalizing the research and teaching done inthe Berlin-Brandenburg region.

Focus

ZJS offers a broad range of research fields thanks tothe involvement of the four universities, two institutesand a number of associated institutions. It facilitatesthe development of networks in transdisciplinary andinterdisciplinary approaches to history, philosophy,Jewish Studies, theology, literature and music, andart history in the Berlin-Brandenburg region.

The areas of research include the history of theemergence of Jewish Studies, Berlin as a location of

Jewish emancipation, the dialogue between Judaism,Christianity, and Islam – the so-called monotheistictriangle – as well as memory cultures, especiallythe testimony and memorial culture on the Shoah.ZJS is an excellent base for taking a PhD in Berlinand Brandenburg with a coordinated course program

involving unique workshops and various researchgroups. The program takes 4-6 semesters in whichPhD candidates attend the general colloquium andone research group per semester.

The Franco-German PhD research group is anintegral part offered by multi-disciplinary

doctoral program of the EHESS (l’École deshautes études en sciences sociales) in Parisand the doctoral programs at the relevant institutes inBerlin institutes. Teaching staff and PhD candidatescome from History, Art History, Social Sciences, and Law.

Our focus is on methodological issues of comparativehistory and histoire croisée, and on issues of inter-disciplinary work as well as the diverse (national anddisciplinary) traditions of the respective academicresearch fields. The PhD research group is funded bythe Franco-German University.

Focus

The institutions involved in the group are EHESS inParis and HU, FU, TU, the Centre Marc Bloch and theWissenschaftszentrum Berlin (WZB).

Doctoral fellows receive financial support for research

stays in France or Germany respectively. Every PhDwho does research in the partner city receives intensivementoring from the local teaching staff. The LLM and PhD program “TransnationalCriminal Justice and Crime Prevention – AnInternational and African Perspective” isrun by the South African-German Centre for

Transnational Criminal Justice. The center is foundedon long-standing cooperation between the LawFaculties at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and theUniversity of the Western Cape. It has been fundedby the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)since 2008 in the framework of the "African ExcellenceInitiative" of the German Federal Foreign Office.

FocusThe LLM and PhD program aims at educating Africanand German students for leading positions at bothnational and international level. The guiding theme ofthe programme is ensuring good governance througha functioning criminal justice system.

The LLM course covers the modules “TransitionalJustice”, “International Criminal Law”, “Law Relating

to Organized Crime and Money Laundering”, and“International Anti-Corruption Law".

Following the LLM course, each year up to threeAfrican graduates are offered a PhD scholarship tostudy at the University of the Western Cape and at HU.

PhD candidates attend PhD classes in Cape Townand Berlin in which they present and discuss theirresearch work. Up to three scholarships can beprovided, especially to African graduates of the LLMprogramme. The total number of PhD students islimited to 12.

The Research Training Group (RTG) Visibilityand Visualisation – Hybrid Forms of PictorialKnowledge at Universität Potsdam exploresforms of visualization in science and art with

a view to understanding how knowledge and reflectivestructures are constituted. Combining computer science,cognitive science, and natural sciences with methodsdrawn from the humanities and social sciences aswell as analyses of artistic practice, the RTG aims toexamine how the significance of visual phenomenahas changed over the course of recent decades.


Focus

Research at the center takes as its starting pointthe seemingly unlimited distribution, manipulationand archiving of visual data, digital delimitations ofthe experience of space and time, and the incurrentdestabilization of the difference between reality,imagination and fiction. An essential focus is on the

interplay between visibility and visualization in variousmedia and technical methods of production, as wellas reflections of these in art and science. We thusconsciously intend to cover a wide spectrum: from ananalysis of the apparatus and mediatic conditions ofproduction, via concrete practices of visualization andtheir application to image codes and orders of sight,

to scientifically demonstrable eye movements. Ratherthan focusing solely on individual disciplinary analysesof particular types of image or exemplary processes ofvisualization, research at the center includes differentforms, practices and strategies of visibility andvisualization.

Being a European phenomenon as far back asits emergence as a political and social move-ment in the late 19th century, the radicalizationof Antisemitism followed similar patterns

in large parts of Europe. This research group takesthe radicalization of Antisemitism as its focus andinvestigates the process of radicalization at thebeginning of the “short 20th century”. Key topics ofconcern are specific national characteristics as wellas similarities across nations regarding the transferof political ideas and the interconnectedness in theradicalization process.

The research group’s working language is German.

Focus

As the “great seminal catastrophe” of the 20th century,World War I sent out social, political, economic, culturaland mental shockwaves into European societies whichreach well into the present. Its outcome was the break-down of “old Europe” and its global political and

economic hegemony. In the light of the disastrousand traumatic experience during the war andthe revolutions and crisis that followed, the “old”Antisemitism escalated at the outset of the “age ofextremes” into more and more extreme forms. Theresearch group systematically explores Antisemitism

in Europe during the “Great War” and the early post-war years, looking at new motives in the languageof radicalized Antisemitism. Its primary focus is toinvestigate the radicalized physical violence againstJews from a comparative perspective.
