Bergamo Film Meeting was the recipient of two prizes at Festival of Festivals, organised by the national cultural event association, which once again proves the Festival’s commitment to innovation and cultural change: BFM won the Best Sponsorship/Partnership Award, awarded to a project in collaboration with Elav Independent Brewery, and the Best Book/Catalogue Award.

On the occasion of its 34th edition (5-13 March 2016), Bergamo Film Meeting - International Film Festival will present an incredibly rich and varied programme, featuring about 140 films of national and international production.Bergamo Film Meeting will present a full-length film competition section, along with documentaries, retrospectives, previews, masterpieces and tributes to legends of the past, recent productions, art exhibitions and installations, special events for schools, animation films, labs and workshops, lectures, Q&As with filmmakers, and much more.A precious opportunity to meet people, to network with film professionals, to research cinema, and - last but not least - to have fun, Bergamo Film Meeting is among the most awaited cultural initiatives in town and a crucial event in the Italian Festival calendar.

Bergamo Film Meeting Association, the Festival’s organisational structure, was born in 1983.

AS OF 2013, BERGAMO FILM MEETING IS REGISTERED AS AN ONLUS ASSOCIATION (I.E., A NON-PROFIT ORGANISATION WITH SOCIAL AIMS).

The Association supports and promotes the distribution of films and documentaries of national and internationalproduction in the theatre and cineclub cultural circuit. It participates in the re-edition and promotion of film classics; all-year-round it organises film festivals, retrospectives, cultural events, labs and workshops, book publications, etc.

The Association is linked to many cultural institutions, with which it shares prestigious collaboration projects. Among them are cinematheques and contemporary art museums, such as National Museum of Cinema(Turin), British Film Institute (London), GAMeC (Contemporary Art Gallery, Bergamo), Fondazione Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia - Cineteca Nazionale (Rome), Griffith Cinematheque (Genoa), Cineteca di Bologna, Fondazione Cineteca Italiana (Milan), University of Bergamo, AGISNational Film Association, Cinemateca Portuguesa (Lisbon), Filmoteca Española (Madrid), Neederland Filmmuseum (Amsterdam), Magyar Filmunió(Budapest), Finnish Film Foundation, Swedish Film Institute.

Bergamo Film Meeting was among the recipients of the 2012 Bergamo Municipality Merit Awards.

A Gold Medal was bestowed to Bergamo Film Meeting by the City of Bergamo, as civic recognition for “the promotion, restoration and distribution, along thirty years of activity, of milestones in the history of cinema. 3,600 films were screened, over 400 of which found distribution thanks to Bergamo Film Meeting’s support. Thanks to its numerous partnerships in Europe, Bergamo Film Meeting is a reference initiative in the field”.

THE FESTIVAL

COMPETITIONEither debut or second films, they have never been screened in Italy before, and are particularly significant as concerns their innovative style and linguistic approach. They compete for the First, Second and Third Bergamo Film Meeting Prizes, bestowed according to audience preferences.The First Prize film’s production is also awarded the Bergamo Film Meeting Prize, worth € 5,000.

PERSONAL EXHIBITION OF AN EMERGING FILMMAKERThis exhibition is devoted to European filmmakers whose work, despite being recognized at various international Festivals, is not well known in Italy yet. Originality of style, an innovative use of technology and inventive narrative/linguistic techniques are among the qualities of the selected films.

RETROSPECTIVESAn opportunity to rediscover great artists from film history, and to experience great moments which are no longer available in the theatre or TV circuit.

CONTEMPORARY EUROPEAN CINEMAThe Festival’s journey through Europe will continue through a exhibition featuring Europe’s most outstanding young directors from recent independent productions.

CLOSE – UPA selection of creative and research documentaries, of both Italian and international independent production, in which filmmakers look at today’s “reality” with an extremely intense, innovative, thought-provoking approach, as concerns both contents and linguistic form.

CULT MOVIESCult movies and masterpieces in film history, coming from the world’s most prestigious cinematheques, are screened in their restored original version.

SCI-FI MARATHON NIGHT AND OTHER MIDNIGHT MOVIESNon-stop screenings from evening to late night: horror, mystery and sci-fi films will make even insatiable cinephiles happy.

KINO CLUBA project devoted to children, which offers everyone a taste of today’s lively animation film industry. It is a journey in auteur cinema, featuring works from all over the world.

AUDITORIUM Piazza LibertàLocated in the city centre and offering 400 seats, the Auditorium is at the core of Bergamo’s cultural life. Films from the Festival’s major sections are screened here. The theatre is equipped with advanced technology (HD 4k, DCP).

SAN MARCO THEATRE Piazzale della Repubblica, 2The Close Up section, along with side sections and re-runs, is held at San Marco Theatre, located a few steps from the Auditorium and equipped with HD 2k and DCP.

CAPITOL THEATRE via Tasso, 41 This theatre hosts the Kino Club section, along with other side sections, Q&As with filmmakers and re-runs. Located a few steps from the Auditorium and the Accommodation/Press Office, the Capitol theatre is equipped with HD 2k and DCP.

PORTA S. AGOSTINO EXHIBITION HALLArt exhibitions and installations, and other special events, are held at beautiful Porta S. Agostino, one of the gateways to uptown, medieval Città Alta.

FORMER COUNCIL ROOM Via Tasso 4This historically evocative space, once used as a Council room for the Bergamo municipality, now hosts the Festival’s Press Office, Accreditation Office and Administrative Office; it also offers video rooms for the press and industry professionals, as well as internet points and a wi-fi area.

TEMPORARY LAB Via Crispi 2/d, BergamoIn the famous downtown street, a few steps from the Auditorium theatre, this is a space devoted to workshop for both teenagers and adults.

AFTER BFM NETWORK Italy80 bars and clubs take part in this initiative, offering the Festival’s official beer (produced by Elav) and organising special events, among which photographic exhibitions and other prize contests.

Along with the official schedule, Bergamo Film Meeting offers many side events to its public, including Q&As with authors, press conferences, concerts, parties, aperitifs and other initiatives.

DURING THE 34th EDITIONEXHIBITIONFrame by Frame – Pavel Koutský’s CinemaKoutský’s original drawings and storyboards, the very ones which inspired his masterworks, will be on display until 31 March 2015. A unique opportunity to discover behind-the-curtain animation and to let oneself be stunned by Koutský’s fantasy and exuberance.

MEETING POINTInside the two tensile structures (open 10AM-2AM every Festival day), attendees will find a perfect place where to meet, mingle, relax, and get to know everything about the Festival. The Festival’s atmosphere is in the air, with side events such as book presentations, concerts, DJ-sets, workshops, press conferences.

BERGAMO JAZZIn our tradition, the end of Bergamo Film Meeting 2015 coincide with the opening of Bergamo Jazz 2015, with a live performance of a classic film.

BFM DAILY STRIPThe Festival in ComicsBFM 33 will host four protagonists of Italian comics: Tuono Pettinato, Sarah Mazzetti, Daw and Dr. Pira. Their illustrations will build up a visual tale of #bfm33. BFM strips will be a daily report of what happens at Bergamo Film Meeting – in theatres, behind the curtains, in the smallest details – through the authors’ perception.

FILM IMPROVISATION CONTEST“CINECITTÀ vs HOLLYWOOD”: a special improvisation contest. As a tribute to BFM 33, in cooperation with Laboratorio 80, Ardega Association presents a film improvisation contest opposing two very special teams, who will take part in a 90-minute artistic-athletic competition, mixing theatre improvisation technique and ice hockey rules.

PROJECTS, LABS & WORKSHOPSBesides offering a rich screening schedule to a diversified and enthusiastic audience, in order to promote the diffusion and knowledge of cinematic culture Bergamo Film Meeting offers new educational projects and labs to industry professionals and students (from primary school to college).

KINO CLUBHeld at the Capitol theatre, this is a retrospective exhibition devoted to children, especially designed for primary and secondary school pupils.

TELEPONGO - ANIMATION LABA lab teaching the use of plasticine as an animation technique: stop-motion short films will be produced by the students, who will also participate in creating a real frame-by-frame animation film, from the modelling to the shooting stage. In collaboration with AVISCO Association.

DRAWING WORKSHOP WITH TUONO PETTINATOThe interactive workshop, run by Tuono Pettinato, one of the most appreciated Italian cartoonists, dealing with polar themes, moving from the stereotypes that mark a genre oscillating between the noir and detective modes.

EDUCATIONTHE FESTIVAL

DIRECTING MASTERCLASS LECTUREAida Begic’s lecture was attended by a group of young cinema students and professionals from all over Italy.

ANIMATION MASTERCLASS WITH STUDIO BOZZETTO&Co.A masterclass held by Studio Bozzetto&Co. The workshop will analyze the whole process of animation production.

TREASURE HUNTAn educational-recreational workshop, meant for both children and adults, a mix of competition, riddles & games and film-inspired treasure hunts.

GUIDED TOUR OF THE EXHIBITION, WITH PAVEL KOUTSKYAn opportunity to discover the work of the director of animated films, with one of the most important European artists.

SILK-SCREEN PRINTING WORKSHOPA manual screen printing course – open to illustrators and graphic designers, be they professionals or simple lovers of the industry – teaching the basics of screen printing through direct experience and aided printing techniques.

A true protagonist of the event, Bergamo Film Meeting’s audience is an ever increasing one. Screenings are always sold out, at any time of the day (or night).

The 2015 edition saw a 7,34% increase in registered attendees (33.785 tickets were sold), while side events outside of theatres (such as Q&As, art exhibitions, workshops, parties, concerts, and the After BFM events) were attended by more than 25.000 people.Accreditation requests from film associations and organisations are always increasing in number. Young attendees, largely high-school and college students from all over Italy, are becoming more and more numerous, too.

The Festival is a long-awaited event by the general public, even more so by lovers of auteur cinema and innovative productions. A both nationally and internationally prestigious event, the Festival is an opportunity to meet film lovers and to exchange cultural ideas about film and visual culture in general. Bergamo Film Meeting’s audience can access any screening, and is constantly involved in special social events, such as parties, aperitifs, art exhibitions, book presentations, celebrations, Q&As with filmmakers, producers and distributors.

EDUCATIONTHE ASSOCIATION

BEHIND-THE-SCENES CINEMAEvery film tells two stories, one about the characters and the other about those who made the film itself – directors, producers, the crew on the set... Every film is then a film within the film: it is a long process, not necessarily a successful one, full of twists and turns, and of obstacles, too.The workshop is held by Davide Lantieri.

TALKING OF CINEMA... AN INTRODUCTORY COURSE TO FILM LANGUAGEThe course aims at providing spectators with critical tools concerning a film’s mise en scène, that is, an “expertise kit” that will allow them to watch films with even more curiosity, pleasure, and competence.In collaboration with Lab 80 film. The course is held by Dario Catozzo.

A TASTE OF CINEMA OR: HOW TO BECOME A SELF-AWARE SPECTATORA series of “film tastings” (mainly blockbusters) meant to improve the audience’s taste, or simply to make them able to recognize good films; a journey into the ingredients and secrets of script writing for the big screen. Because a connoisseur always knows what to choose...In collaboration with Davide Lantieri.

CANNES E DINTORNI - CINEMA’S WAYS 2015The 2015 First Prize film was revived in a great exhibition in Milan. In collaboration with Provincia di Milano - Assessorato alla Cultura, Corriere della Sera and AGIS Lombardia.

AFTER FESTIVAL AT BLOOM - MEZZAGO (MI)At Bloom - Mezzago (MI), Bergamo Film Meeting presented some films from the last edition of the Festival, chosen from among the section Close Up, Europe: Feminine, Singular and Polar Film: The Rise of a Genre.

BFM IN PARMA: POLAR FILM: THE RISE OF A GENREIn collaboration with the Association Laboratorio 80, at the cinema Astra in Parma, the most representative films from the retrospective dedicated to the French polar have been replicated on April.

BFM IN RAVENNAA selection of short films by Czech director Pavel Koutský at Theatre Rasi in Ravenna, for the sixteenth edition of the short films festival Corti da Sogni – Antonio Ricci.

FILM WITH LIVE MUSIC Bergamo Film Meeting is often proud to present the screening of classical films with live music performances. The Man With Movie Camera was accompanied by a live show of the Tuscan band Kobayashi, while Nosferatu: The Vampire was accompanied by Press Trio.

GEORGES SIMENON-GIANNI DA CAMPO COLLECTIONThis is the first Simenon collection in Italy, a reference point for research and study in the works of the great Belgian writer. Run in cooperation with Alasca Foundation, the collection gathers most of Simenon’s production, including over 1000 books in French, Italian, English, Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, along with critical books and magazines. The collection was established thanks to a generous donation from Gianni Da Campo’s large book collection.

BFM IN BRESCIAAt the Eden Theatre, premiere screening of the film Duel, animated short film by Czech Pavel Koutský, in collaboration with the Association Avisco - Audiovisivo Scolastico.

BIG WEDNESDAYSA 10-classic retrospective within the Esterno Notte open-air summer screening series (June to September), organized by Lab 80 film.

LABORATORIO TASCABILEA 10-documentary exhibition presented at Teatro Tascabile (Città Alta, Bergamo, January-March 2014), in collaboration with Laboratorio 80 Association and Teatro Tascabile (Bergamo).

ART DATEBFM@ARTDATE 2015A short film exhibition on the occasion of the major contemporary art event in Bergamo. In collaboration with The Blank.

CINESCATTIA project by Laboratorio 80 Association, meant to preserve and promote family film archives, with special attention to amateur films made between the 20s and the 80s in 9.5, 8, Super8 and 16mm.

#BFMINTHEWORLDAt the sea or in the mountains; on vacation or on a business trip: BFM merchandise is all over the world! Bergamo Film Meeting Onlus collects pictures sent by BFM fans with Festival merchandise from all over the world. This is an amusing collection, getting richer and larger every year, which will be presented in the next edition of the Festival.

AVANTIA Lab 80 film project meant to promote and distribute independent Italian cinema, presenting over 50 films by new filmmakers in Brescia, Bologna, Novara, Pescara, Turin, Vicenza, Trento, Rovereto, Reggio Calabria.

PROGRAMME BROCHURES15.000 copies of Bergamo Film Meeting News - a brochure including the Festival’s programme and side events calendar - are distributed at the Festival venues, and in schools, universities, hotels and restaurants, bars and clubs in Bergamo. BFM News also gives information about all side events at BFM Meeting Point or in the After BFM Network. Advertising space is also available for sponsors and business partners.

BFM NEWSLETTERA newsletter, offering news and updates about the Festival, is regularly sent to over 10.000 e-mail contacts nationwide and abroad. During the March Festival it is sent on a daily basis.

FESTIVAL TRAILERInternationally renowned artists collaborate each year with Bergamo Film Meeting to create the Festival’s opening trailer, as Regina Pessoa and Abi Feijó, Verdena, Bonnot, Tracanna and Cecchetto Trio.The trailer is screened before each film in the Competition section, and offers advertising space for sponsors’ and partners’ logos.

SOCIAL NETWORKBergamo Film Meeting’s number of contacts in all major social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr and Linkedin) is growing bigger and bigger. Promotional videos and trailers are uploaded on YouTube and Vimeo. At the present moment, the Festival has 2.000 followers on Twitter and Facebook fans are now 6.900. Facebook registers over 6.000 daily visualizations (which become 30.000 during the March Festival).

BFM - MEDIA BOXA new web-based space, connected to the Festival’s official website, where to find video and photo galleries and updates of the current edition, along with film stills, kits and trailers, and where to follow live-streaming broadcasts of Q&As with filmmakers, artists and Festival guests.

PROMOTIONAL MATERIALSCOMMUNICATION

BFM GADGETSPromotional gadgets (bags, hoodies, badge holders, T-shirts, caps) bear both the Festival’s and the Partners’ logos; different gadgets are produced for each edition. The gadgets are distributed or sold on-site during the Festival, and sold online.

ADVERTISEMENT ON THE MEDIAThis activity involves advertising campaigns on national newspapers and magazines, and on local TV channels and radio stations. Media partnership agreements, including publishing initiatives and advertising strategies, have been developed with L’Eco di Bergamo, Corriere della Sera, Cineforum, Cinemaitaliano.info, Sentieri Selvaggi).

POSTERS ON ATB-TEB PUBLIC TRANSPORT1,000 Bergamo Film Meeting posters are put up on ATB-TEB public transport vehicles, including the Bergamo-Albino tram connection.

Run by national renowned professionals, the Press Office keeps and develops close contacts with all the major periodicals of the field, with all the most important local and national newspapers, with TV channels and radio stations and with the on-line press with a full and effective media presence.

Bergamo Film Meeting has two Press Office branches, one for the local and one for the national press.All the press releases, updates, promotional trailers, pictures and press kits are sent to a Press address list of more than 10,000 contacts.The Festival’s opening press conference is held both at the Anteo Spazio Cinema in Milan, and at Teatro Donizetti, Bergamo.The 2015 Bergamo Film Meeting Press Review is a collection of over 500 items, including newspaper articles and excerpts from local and national magazines, and articles from specialized periodicals and online press. Information and stories about the Festival are also offered by press agencies such as Adn Kronos and Ansa, by major newspapers such as Corriere della Sera, La Repubblica, Il Sole 24 Ore, Il Giornale, La Stampa, and by periodicals such as Corriere Magazine, Io Donna, D-La Repubblica delle Donne, I Viaggi, Il Venerdì, Donna Moderna, Internazionale, Alias.The Festival’s media visibility is also increased by its presence on both local TV (Bergamo TV, Video Bergamo, Studio TV1) and national TV (Rai 1, Rai 3, Rai Sat, Rai News 24), and on national radio stations (Radio 3 – Hollywood Party, Radio 24, CNR Channel News Radio, Popolare Network, Radio Alta, RTSI Radio Televisione Svizzera Italiana).
