State Remote
Learning Plan
Attendance
On remote instruction days, attendance is determined by daily evidence of student engagement with instructional content. This includes but is not limited to:
● Attending and participating in synchronous class instruction, class meetings etc.
● Evidence of engagement with class materials on Canvas based on Canvas analytics and Student Interactions reports
● Submission of assignments● Completion of assessments
At the elementary level, daily attendance should be monitored in the homeroom class. Teachers will log daily remote attendance in PowerSchool.
Small Group Instruction ● Small group instruction can/should continue during in-person and virtual
learning○ In-Person: maintain social distance and wear masks○ Virtually: use of Zoom break-out rooms, scheduling of 1:1/small group of student
Expectation: Required Tech & Communication Tools for BES Teachers & Families
Core Idea: Keeping the tech eco-system small to ensure fidelity of implementation, communication, and to encourage engagement, collaboration, and innovation
● School-Wide Family Communication System: Website, Class dojo○ K-5 Learning Platform: Canvas LMS○ 3-5 Use Chromebooks○ K-2 Use Ipads
Technology at BES● Zoom
○ Break-Out Rooms; integral for small group instruction, collaborative discussions
● Canvas● Edpuzzle● Seesaw● Peardeck● Flipgrid● Kahoot● Quizziz● Googlemeet● Microsoft Teams

Top 5 Flexible Learning Skills ● Tech Integration
○ In flexible learning environments, technology is not a requirement, but engaging learners and supporting them with the systems to take ownership of their learning is close to impossible to do consistently without it. In this skill, teachers can identify appropriate tools for various functions, and support students and families to understand them and be successful with them over time. (class dojo, seesaw)
● Teacher Presence○ Unlike face-to-face teaching that depends on physical presence and teacher immediacy, teaching presence in flexible learning
depends on course design and organization that helps the students ‘see’ and have access to their teacher. This skill involves both direct and indirect instruction and culture that can support students to feel the presence of their teacher, even when they are not around. (classcraft, office hours)
● Social Presence○ “Social presence is defined as the ability of participants in a community to project themselves and their thinking as real
people through a medium of communication,” (Garrison and Anderson, 2003). In flexible environments, social presence supports students to feel connected to their peers, and builds the sense of a community. (discussion board, flipgrid)
Top 5 Flexible Learning Skills● Authentic Tasks
○ In a flexible environment, the way we design tasks is important to student engagement and learning. Tasks must be scaffolded and chunked up to encourage completion, and choice, interest, and relevance of the tasks are also key levers for success. (choice board, book clubs)
● Social Emotional○ In a flexible learning environment, SEL is key to student learning and success. Self-regulation, growth mindset, and
self-awareness are key parts of completing tasks away from the teacher’s direct instruction, and trauma informed practices can help us respond to students that need additional support and love. (lunch bunch, game time, check ins)
Top 4 Flexible Instruction Best Practices ● 4 Flexible Learning Modalities (Virtual Learning Language)
○ Synchronous Teaching■ Live sessions, whole group, real-time teaching, sharing joyful moments and
celebrations○ Asynchronous Teaching
■ Self-paced learning at their own pace, Hyperdocs/links, playlists, choice-boards○ Feedback & Assessment
■ Mostly 1:1, syn or async, commenting on assignments, 1:1 feedback sessions (15-20 min) with each student, discussion boards, data tracking
○ Culture & Relationship Nurturing■ Whole group, small group, 1:1; community building■ Zoom class meetings, Mood Meter check-ins, Caring Schools SEL lessons, game
time, show-n-tell, surveys○
Virtual Learning & Flexible Instruction Best Practices ● Canvas● Office Hours/Learning Hours● Daily/Weekly SEL Community Meeting● Daily math and literacy small group time● Weekly SEL check ins● Teacher lunch bunch● Buddy classroom virtual field trips, showcase student work and game
time● Book clubs, PBL’s● Breakout rooms for collaboration
Visitors, Guests, Parents in the Building ● Any parent, guest, visitor, community partner, CMS employee, etc will enter the front
office and be temperature checked by front office staff.● EVERYONE must wear a mask while in the building● Guests will answer the screening questions linked here: screening questions● Guests will still need show photo ID● Parents/guests/visitors are not allowed to eat breakfast or lunch in the classroom or
cafeteria. ● All persons visiting students or picking up students must remain in the main lobby● No classroom observations
Emergency Drills: Fire Drills, Lock-Downs, Tornado Drills
Fire drill- exit the building while maintaining social distancing and on both sides of the hallway
Lock down- close doors and blinds and students remain at their desk with head down
Tornado drill- come to main floor and sit in duck and cover spaced 3 feet apart
