BEQUIA NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATIONS 2012/13

Once again it is my pleasurable duty to thank all of you in both the private and business sectors who contributed finance to make this year’s New Year’s Eve fireworks in Bequia a resounding success. With a display each year for the last twelve years, we can truly claim to have established - with your generous support - an institutional tradition for celebration in Bequia on New Year’s Eve, or in local parlance “Old Year’s Night”.

It is also my pleasure to inform you that at the annual meeting of former Presidents and Prime Ministers in China last year, our distinguished, high level banking expert informed me that she had very much enjoyed our 2001/12 celebrations in Bequia, which she had watched from the deck of her yacht!

Our committee would like to recommend to the business community that they allow for a modest contribution to this economically significant event in their annual budget calendar. It is essential that we place our order for fireworks early in the year to ensure the selection we desire, and to give the necessary time required for the complex procedures involved in licensing, shipping and import-ing. The total costs estimates around EC$15,000.

We are deeply grateful for the goodwill of all of those who give their time and skills to make this event happen, including the Fireworks Team at the Frangipani. My especial grateful thanks go as always to the Bang Gang who each year forego their own celebrations so that others may enjoy themselves. No charge is made for any services rendered.

We would like also to place on record also our appreciation to the Ministry of Finance for their 100% tax and duty free concession, our Customs Broker Ms. Richards and her staff at Express Shipping Customs and Shipping Agents, The Commissioner of Police and his staff for granting permission to import the fireworks, and Sgt. Francis and his team at Port Elizabeth Police Station for their assistance in storing and securing them.

Finally our thanks got to the Management and Crew of the Sand Pit and of the tug America for providing the facilities and logistical support in Admiralty Bay.

next to the Vegetable Market. These are reserved exclusively for yachties’ use. Alternatively, yacht garbage may be delivered “at sea” to Daffodil Marine or other reliable water taxis;

charge usually $3.00 to $5.00 per bag. Dumping in unauthorized places is a prosecutable offence.
