Akwaaba, Miawoezor, Welcome to Accra, Africa’s cultural city!

Accra is a surprise, a little difficult to describe but with a good sense of humour. From the old settlements by the coast with colonial influ-enced buildings like Ga Mashie, to the sprawling new neighbourhoods further north like East Airport and Spintex, Accra has something for everybody and when you know where to go, you are bound to have a time of your life in this city that serves hip bars with young people expressing themselves in open mic sessions; jazz clubs; beer gardens with live band music, and street bars that play loud music evoking the most animated dancing!

Accra’s nightclubs; its smiling indigenous people; its TV moments when the Black Stars national football team or Accra Hearts of Oak FC are playing; cosmopolitan Osu with all its restaurants - sushi bars, fast food joints and Chinese eateries; its street stalls dishing out hot kenkey and fish, kelewele and other great Ghanaian fare and rising dust as cars speed past, all make living in this city worthwhile!

As we head to the end of the year, with the yuletide season – a high spending period - fast approaching, Accranians are getting apprehen-sive, with finances being tight. But, economic woes notwithstanding, we know how to party and the party goes on unabated!

November has its fair share of events and activities and the critical list on page 4 highlights some of them. Get a real feel of things by attending the Bukom Jama Gala on Nov 7.

We have also captured the essentials of all that Accra has to offer with regards to lifestyle. There’s plenty to do in the nation’s capital, this happening city! Have fun!

Never has there been a bet-ter time to present a vehicle that packages information on the leisure, cultural and creative industries sector! Bentsifi’s Accra Life’s begin-ning was a modest single A3 newsprint sheet; a simple front and back issue listing the best in what cultural Accra had to offer back in 1995!It has since metamorphosed unsuccessfully as an ‘8-page A4’, then a ‘20-page A5’ newsletters, and then as sections and columns in various newspapers and magazines, before mutating into its present form.

In that time, many similar titles have been launch with pomp, but have also failed. The journey continues! What’s the saying? “Whatever you do, at least try and fail, but never fail to try.” We obviously started ahead of our time! Ours is to collect and pack-age information in lifestyle trends with some insightful cultural discourse. We hope you will stay the course with us, and keep us company. Thank you. Enjoy!

We have come a long way

We can’t go through this month without...

...attending the stage finale of the Miss Malaika TV Reality Show where Mo Hit ..... and Sarkodee are performing

...getting one of mSimps fabulous leather slippers

...joining the ‘gang’ at the Tulip Mirror Ball! No, we can’t miss it this time!!

... driving up the hill to Hilburi for a scrump-tious lunch at their restaurant overlooking the pool with the hill in the background.

... catching Ms Ofie doing her thing at the Taverna Tropicana on Sat-urday or Sunday or Monday... O! She’s there most everyday!

Ghana Tourism Authority has been established to replace the old Ghana Tourism Board with the express mandate to promote sustainable development of the tourism industry both locally and internationally. It was passed by an Act of Parliament (Act 817) and as-sented by the President, John Atta Mills, which empowers the Authority to ensure the management and development of appropriate designs for tourist sites, promote pro-poor tourism, sustainable and responsible tourism and take ap-propriate measures for safety and security of consumers of Ghana’s tourism products.

One of Accra’s colonial legacies, the General Post Office, when it was finished (circa 1911) and as it looks today, 100 years later.

Accra City Mayor Alfred Vanderpuye will be Guest of Honour at the next Bukom Jama Gala (Mon 7), a community event that captures the excite-ment of Jama in the Ga Mashie community. The first in the monthly series, which will run till next June when it dovetails into a full Jama festival, took place on October 3, in the heart of Ga Mashie at Bukom Square, the venue for events.

Beginning with a brass band procession through the commu-nity, delivered by the kids from the Royal School in the local-ity, the entertainment ‘faceoff’ that ensued between compet-ing groups from Chorkor and Jamestown subsequently saw Man ‘U’ titillate the audience and judges to come tops among the four groups selected from that session.

Another four will be selected at the next event to make a total of 8 - four each from Chor-lor and Jamestown. They will continue ‘sparing’ till an eventual winner is declared in June 2012. It’s great fun, with enthusiastic and atmospheric anthems!

Members of Ghana’s Parliament and other relevant stakeholders will be sensitized at a city forum aimed at strategizing on ways to put the cultural and creative industries at the heart of national policy agendas by exploring development policies, fund-ing modalities and programming approaches opens this month at the Accra International Conference Centre on Monday 7.It will stress the necessity, an obligation even, of a national agenda to mainstream culture into devel-opment exploring the complexity of the cultural in-dustries numerous sub sectors and its crosscutting nature in strategic national development planning.Promoted by the collaboration of the Accra Metro-politan Assembly, Ministry of Trade and Industries, Arterial Network, UNESCO, the Goethe Institut, Agenda 21 of Spain and Accra Cultural and Arts Network (AccraCAN) participants are expected from other African countries. It will also assist in developing city-specific cultural policies to enable cities to create cultural program-ming and develop them into effective tools for ur-ban development and revitalization. In order to understand a city, to understand what makes it unique, you have to research its history a bit. The best way is with a tour that guides you to the most important sites from various eras.A historical tour through Accra, for instance, will

show how the city has developed into its modern form. It will show how communities evolved around natural water bodies – evidenced even by the vari-ous names given neighbourhoods by the indigenous Ga residents. Take Bu.kom, which loosely translates; “On the shoulder of the valley, or low land”. We all know low lands collect water, and those residents over 60 years will tell you how when they were young, they remember seeing ravines in what is now cen-tral Accra, which often would collect water. Dzor.wu.lu means ‘big valley’. And Far.noo.far, which means “river upon river” is the instructive name given to the area in Kokomlemle, near Joy FM, which often flooded during the rains but which ur-ban constructions have averted. But avert natural flowing water from one area and it will find it’s way to another. This is what we are seeing in Accra’s urban development today. Need-less to say, if culture, that is language, – the Ga names given neighbourhoods – had been taken more seriously, city planners and politicians would have the courage to better create a more urbane Accra devoid of flooding, for instance.

Labone resident, Ken Attoh grew up with his parents and siblings in Bubuashi, west Accra.

Ken’s name is one that is synonymous with multime-dia design, creative photography and cinematography within the Ghanaian creative industry. He is the chief creative director and producer at Spar-row Productions, a film company based in Accra. He is also the co-founder of Illusions, a creative design studio that specializes in motion design and im-age manipulation for film and broadcast clientsIn 1997, after a professional course in informa-tion systems and management, Ken decided to pursue a career path related to his talent and be-gun his professional life as a fine art illustrator work-ing for Akroma productions, an advertising agency in Accra. Within three years he had gained enough ex-perience working on various accounts which moved him up the creative ranks to become Art Director, in charge of reputable brands like Castle Milk Stout, and Ghana Telecom to name a few. He became one of Ghana’s most sought after graphic de-signers and professional photographers. But late 2001 Ken left Ghana to the UK to fur-ther his education and also to broaden his expo-sure within the industry. He studied for a Bach-elor’s degree in Multimedia Arts and also attained a diploma in Digital Film Making from Middlesex Univer-sity in London.By 2007, Ken had worked for very diverse companies among the creative elite in London and some of the UK’s smaller towns, including taking on many roles as a freelanc-er. A few of them were Art Director for Citi Bank, web de-signer for logic media and creative photographer for high-end image retouching company, TaylorJames.

In 2008, Ken worked on a second project with Writer/ Film Di-rector, Shirley Frimpong-Manso of Sparrow. Their professional union encouraged Ken to move back to Ghana. With his experi-ence, he partnered with her to transition her events company into a full-blown film production studio. Today, ken has worked as creative director and producer for six of Sparrow’s award winning feature films. He is a true believer of ‘form following function’, that all things cre-ated to perform a particular function should also be presented to attract and appeal through its packaging.

Inspired by the creative energy he shares with his partner, with whom he has a son, Ken loves living in Accra and can be found occasionally – when he’s away from his computer or at the Ap-ple shop at the Accra Mall – at the Silverbird Cinema. Or you’ll find him having a Tepanyaki at the Golden Dragon at La Palm.

Getting Around

New road arrangements; one-way systems and fly-overs, supposed to help to ease traffic in the inner city, doesn’t seem to be working! The traffic is getting worse! Nonetheless, getting around in the Central Business District is now fairly easy. Once you know a landmark near your destination - street names are not popular – you can get to where you want to go quite easily. Ask for which neigh-bourhood you’re going, and the nearest landmark. By Bus: Several mini buses and Lorries known as ‘Tro-tro’ run regular routes in the inner city, and while congested, it is the most inexpensive way to travel. The Metro Mass Transport service, recently introduced large buses run on many routes too. By Taxi: The distinctive Ghana taxi - with yellow painted mud guards- are in plenty and run a

shared, or hire

service called

‘dropping’. The shared service picks and drops passengers along a particular route while the hire service, which any taxi would usu-ally oblige, takes passengers directly to their destination. You must, however, determine what you pay before embark-ing on your journey. Different rates apply for different trips, but the current hourly rate for taxi is between GhC8 per hour for more than 5 hours and GhC10 for less. By Car: While traveling by car is fairly easy, many visitors find driving in inner Accra, cumber-some. Many commercial driv-ers flaunt traffic regulations and while this rarely results in serious accidents, it can be frustrating. Many car rental companies in town provide drivers as well, and this may be a better alternative. Contact the Car Rental Association of Ghana on, or the Accra Visitor Service, 0244.69.7046 for a

rec-om-

mendation.On Foot: Recent improve-

ments in clearly demarcated pavements have helped to make walking, which is the cheapest way to get around, a lot more easy. The only snug may be the heat of the scorching sun if you are not well protected. So get your straw hat and sunglasses out! Be careful though, particularly in the Central Business District, as the many other pedestrians can push you onto the road. Always try to walk facing on-coming traffic.Inter-City TravelA number of private coach companies run a schedule ser-vice to all the regional capitals, and most major other towns. Also, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has buses that ply major towns. There are also ‘Fast Cars’, hatchback saloons that go very fast to the destination for about twice the price of the regular schedule routes. Be advised not to take them after dark. Many begin their journey at the major lorry station at Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATIONLocal Time Ghana is on one time zone; Greenwich Mean Time. Driving License: Visitors planning to drive or hire a car must have an interna-tional Drivers License. Electricity: Most hotels have 3-pin or 2-pin sockets op-erating at 220 volts which accept British and European standard plugs. What To Wear: It is really just hot all year round, but in January and February, the dry Hamattan wind blows in from the Sahara. Otherwise, it is generally humid in the south and hot/dry upcoun-try in the north, so wear natural fiber materials like cotton, linen.

VISITOR SERVICESTo Help You The Ac-cra Visitor Service (t. 0244.69.7046) provides a city concierge service and can help you plan an itiner-ary for an excursion, and generally point you in the right direction.
