Foreword

Since the dawn of Time, Man has tried to make sense of the world

around him. He observes the turning of night to day, Winter into Spring,

and the endless cycle of birth and death.

He charts the movement of stars in the sky, and the changing flow of

the ocean tides. He notices how the creatures of the sea follow the

ebb and flow of the ocean, just as the ocean flows naturally with the

heating and cooling of the surface of the Earth. And just like a flock

of birds migrating before Winter, so do all things move and change

according to the laws of Nature.

For thousands of years, Man has lived in Nature according to these

laws. He has felt the dew in the morning air and knew when the Spring

rain was to come. He takes one look at the clouds, and understands

the direction of the coming Summer breeze.

Over time, this knowledge of Nature was successfully applied to

understand the outcome of one’s Life or Destiny, and this study later

became known as “Ba Zi” (

). With this prec ious knowledge, one isnot only able to foresee what the future holds, but to also CHANGE the

outcome of one’s path in life. The ability to change the predestined

outcome is what sets Ba Zi apart from many other forms of Chinese

Metaphysics!

To the ignorant, this knowledge has often been treated with great

distrust and suspicion, and many have grown to fear such “power”.

Fear and ignorance have caused a great many of Man’s mistakes, and this infinite knowledge was thus hidden away from the people in

the ancient Chinese C lassic texts.

For hundreds of years, only the Emperor and his most trusted advisors

had access to the Classics. Anyone who attempted to siphon thesesecrets out of the Palace would be immediately executed.

As Destiny would have it, the Classic texts are now available for public

reading. But even now, few can truly interpret the profound meanings

behind the words within them.

It is often said that one “cannot choose the book” but rather, “the

book must choose you”. Thankfully today, one does not have to be“chosen” to decode this Classic, because the code is now broken

and the knowledge is for the first time, available to anyone who seeks

it.

My dear reader, do not be afraid to explore the ancient Chinese

Classics for yourselves, and at the same time do not be too quick to

accept others’ explanations of them if you are not convinced. These

Classics were initially written to deceive and confuse to those who do

not understand Nature.

With this book, I hope to finally share the timeless knowledge contained

within this Classic, with you.

Open your heart and mind to this knowledge, and make it your own.

This is the precious gift our ancient ancestors passed down to us. Use

it to improve the World within, and around you.

Your Destiny is now in your hands.

As with the unforgettable words of my Master,

Enjoy this discovery.

2    Five Verse Treasure

This is an intermediate-level book for Ba Zi readers and practitioners.

For a basic-level understanding of Ba Zi and the 10 elements, please

refer to the book, “The Correct Way Of Understanding A Person’s

Destiny” by Master Benson Yeo]

Thefirst section of this book contains the English

translation of the C lassic text. Try to derive

your own interpretation of the C lassic text

before proceeding to the Explanation

section.

How to read this book

How to read this book

The Explanation section is structured in the following manner:

• Each line of text is a verse:

Fig 1. Verse and verse number

• Each verse contains four phrases:

Fig 2. The four phrases of a verse

The explanation of the first phrase will be discussed in section (a). The

explanation of the second, third and forth phrases will be covered

under section (b), (c) and (d) respectively.

When reading this Classic, be open to interpretations from multiple

perspec tives. Sometimes, the four phrases in each verse are related –

that is, they discuss the same topic.

Other times, each phrase (of the same verse) can discuss completely

different topics.

There is no fixed way to read the Chinese C lassics. The c lues and hints

are hidden all over the texts, and an open mind will aid greatly in

helping you understand the relationship between the Ba Zi chart and

the elements within.

When there is illness, the prescription becomes noble. It is no surprise

to have no injury. If you remove the sickness within the chart, wealthand good fortune will follow.

When the Tiger and Rabbit encounter much Metal, they become

disgraceful. The Poor and Wealthy walk above and below. The land

in the South fears chancing upon the Monkey. The North doesn’t wish

to meet the Rooster.

“Thriving” is born in the month. Wealth and Of ficer likes to penetrate

Heaven. It is inappropriate to be further self-prosperous. (Then one)Can enjoy the source of luxurious wealth.

Thick Earth chances upon much Fire. Returning Metal becomes

prosperous in Autumn. Water floats Wood during Winter. (One’s)

Reputation inevitably becomes empty and superficial.

a) When there is illness, the prescription becomes noble

b) It is no surprise to have no injury (in the Ba Zi chart)

c) If you remove the sickness within the chart,

d) Wealth and good fortune will follow

Author note:

This first verse is the most important one. It tells us the whole point of

learning Ba Zi, and how to bring success to one’s life.

Many people think that success follows the enhancement of the

good elements in one’s chart. However, this is a misconception and

the real secret of Ba Zi is revealed in thisfirst verse: Success follows the

suppression of the problems (or illness) in one’s chart. Once we are

able to identify and suppress the bad elements (or bad Qi), success

will come naturally!

The next important point of this verse is the second phrase. It literally tellsus that most Ba Zi charts are flawless, or without problems. Think about

this for a moment. If most Ba Zi charts are without problems, why do

we live in such a messy, chaotic world? Why do 80% of people in the

World suffer, while the small 20% enjoy prosperity and satisfaction? This

phase reveals to us the next big secret of the Chinese Classics: There

are misleading statements. These statements have been intentionally

written to confuse and frustrate the masses, so that only the truly“enlightened” readers will be able to decipher the true meanings

behind the ancient texts.

Dear reader, if you read the C lassic texts without a critical mind you will

be easily led astray. They are filled with mental mazes and word tricks

that have been designed to confuse you. We must always think about

the meaning behind the words. Do they make sense? Is it logical? If

what you read doesn’t make sense, you must to look for the indirectmeaning behind the words – think: “What is this phrase telling me?”

Don’t take everything you read in the Classics literally.

Author Note:

Metal is the Of ficer/ Killing element of the Wood Day Master. When it isa negative element, the Day Master will encounter problems with his/

her boss at work, experience legal implications and/or have poor self-

discipline. For a male, his children will be troublesome. For a female,

her husband or boyfriend will be a source of worry.

This is a general guideline based on the Wood and Metal elements

alone. Please do not strictly interpret all similar charts as having a bad

outcome. To accurately determine the real outcome of a person’sDestiny, we must take into account all other elements in the chart.

Also, please be aware that there are two types of Metal elements –

Yin () and Yang (). The C lassics often mention an element without

going into detail the Yin and Yang aspects.

For example, the  Day Master may dislike Yin Metal (), but that

is not necessarily true for Yang Metal (). On the other hand, the

Day Master may dislike both Yin and Yang Metal. So which Metal (Yin

or Yang) makes the  Day Master “disgraceful”? Which Metal (Yin

or Yang) makes the  Day Master “disgraceful”? This is one of the

common puzzles the C lassics like to tease us with.

For a thorough understanding of the relationships and positive

elements of each of the 10 Yin/ Yang elements, I strongly encourage

readers to learn from the book, “The Correct Way Of Understanding A

Person’s Destiny” by Master Benson Yeo.

Explanation

b) The Poor and Wealthy walk above and below (in the Bazi chart)

This phrase emphasizes the difference between the stem and the

branch. If a person’s chart has useful elements only on the stem,

success will be temporary.

However, if the useful elements are found in the branch, it is termed as

“genuine” and success will endure throughout one’s life.

For example, if one has wealth elements in the Ba Zi chart, it is betterto be found in the branches (rather than the stem).

c) The land in the South fears chancing upon the Monkey

• “land in the South” refers to the Snake branch

• Snake combines with the Monkey

When Monkey is combined away, the hidden  element in Monkey

is removed. This is a bad outcome for the  Day Master because his/

her noble element is removed.

When Snake is combined away, the hidden  element in Snake is

also removed. This is a bad outcome for the  Day Master because

his/ her noble element is removed.

b) Wealth and Of ficer likes to penetrate Heaven

Example: Wealth () and Of ficer () penetrates Heaven

Author Note:

This Day Master is rooted (in the day branch), and flanked by

Wealth elements in the hour and month pillar (which are both rooted

in the hour branch). This gives us a clear indication that this person is

of strong character and is able to handle the abundant wealth in his/

her life.

Add to this the Of ficer element (rooted in the month branch) that

supports the Wealth element and we know that this is an extremely

wealthy person.

Do note the clash between the Rabbit and Rooster branches, which

gives us yet another indication that this Day Master will encounter

various opportunities in life to chance upon great wealth.

In this particular example, the Of ficer element does not serve tobenefit the Day Master direc tly, but rather to support the Wealth

element.

Explanation

However, please do not fix this reading as “all Of ficer elements will

support Wealth elements”, because there are 10 different types ofOf ficer elements and 10 different types of Wealth elements. Each has

its own unique characteristics.

It is common for Ba Zi practitioners to assume that the Wood ()

element will support the () Fire element. In this case however, the

reverse is true.

This is one of the secrets of Ba Zi that few people understand – this isthe understanding of Nature!

Example: Wealth () and Of ficer () penetrates Heaven

Author Note:

This Day Master is rooted in the month branch, with both Wealth

elements rooted in the year branch. As with the previous example,

this person will definitely be wealthy in his/ her lifetime.

Unlike the previous example however, the  Of ficer element in thehour pillar will direc tly aid the Day Master.

This person will not only be rich, but will have considerable power and

influence in his/ her life. This is the chart of an extremely noble person.

He/ she will usually be found in high society circles.

However, to get a complete picture of this person’s Destiny, we must

also take into account his/ her ten-year luck cycle (which we will notexamine here). If this person walks through a period of bad luck, all

the good elements in his chart can turn negative!

Nonetheless, this person possesses the character of nobility and wealth

in his/ her life, and if he/ she can pull through the periods of bad luck,

tremendous success awaits.

Explanation

c) It is inappropriate to meet Killing once more

Example:

•  born in Rabbit month, with excessive Killings (inappropriate)

Author note:

When Roosters (Metal) are present in the chart together with the

Rabbit, a clash is likely. The Rabbit holds the Thriving of the  Day

Master, and it is inappropriate for it to be clashed away. Remember

that it is important for the Day Master to be rooted.

Again, please be careful in applying this knowledge because there

are two different aspects to the Metal element – Yin and Yang. The

effect of one can be completely different from the other!

d) (With) Fire land (one will) receive clothing and grain

• Fire land = Horse and Snake

Example:

Author note:

In this example “Fire land” refers to the Horse, which will aid both the

 Day Master and the element.

It is worthwhile to note that the two Horses in the branches contain

the roots of the  element in the stem, which indicates that the

element is especially strong in this chart.

In many circumstances, this will drain energy excessively from the

Day Master (since Wood produces Fire). However, because the Day

Master is rooted (in the Rabbit month), this person will be able to

handle the situation.

Explanation

a) Thick Earth doesn’t like to move in the Pig month

• Earth () is stagnant in Winter - is extinct in the Pig month

b) “Thriving” is found in the Snake palace

• There is a hidden element within the Snake

Example:

c) When there are Southern roots, there will be prosperity

Southern roots = animals with Fire elements within

• Tiger – holds Killing () and Thriving ()

• Snake – holds Thriving ()

• Horse – holds Goat Blade ()

• Goat – holds Goat Blade ()

• Dog – holds Thriving ()

Author note:

The animals that contain the fire element also contain the roots of

the Earth Day Master. When one’s roots are present in the Ba Zi chart,

prosperity will come sooner or later.

• Rooster combines away Dragon (which contains’s roots)

North = Water (Pig and Rat)

• Pig combines away Tiger

• Pig clashes with Snake

• Rat combines away Ox (’s Goat Blade;’s Thriving )

• Rat clashes away Horse

Additional interpretation: North-West should be avoided

• North-West = Dog

• Dog clashes with Dragon (both roots clash)

Author No te:

The ancient Classics often emphasize the importance of the Thriving/

Goat Blade (i.e. roots) of the Day Master.

When the Day Master is rooted, he/ she

will be strong enough to overcome

obstac les and succeed in life.

Page 50: Benson - Five Verse book.pdf

Explanation

a) Yin adjusts accordingly to Yang

Yin represents the branch while Yang represents the stem. This is to say

that the stem initiates changes and the branch follows accordingly,

just like the relationship between Yin and Yang.

b) Without roots, (if the) month branch is Dragon,

c) North-West will still be considered noble

• North = Rat

Example:   (in Rat) combines with (in Dragon)

West = Rooster

• Rooster combines with Dragon

Animal combinations often lead to a harmonious and nobleoutcome

Explanation

Additional interpretation to this phrase:

• North-West = Dog• Dog clashes with Dragon

Author note:

This verse gives us an important clue to the correct way of understanding

Ba Zi – clashes can also lead to a good outcome. There are Ba Zi

readers who view clashes as a necessarily “bad” thing. This is not

always true, as the “good” or “bad” of a clash ultimately depends onthe outcome of the clash. In other words, do not mistakenly think that

all clashes will lead to a bad outcome.

Explanation

a) (When) There is Killing, discuss it and nothing else

Author note:

In ancient times, the focus of Chinese society is the Government

(Of ficer/ Killing elements). This is why the Of ficer and Killing elements

are deemed to be most important. In modern times however, this is

not too relevant.

b) (If) There is no Killing, other methods/ prescriptions can be used

c) Once Killing is removed,

For most Day Masters, the Killing element is negative, so it is best to

remove it

• Exceptions are ,, Day Masters

For most Day Masters, the Of ficer element is also negative

• Exceptions are ,, Day Masters

d) Not afraid of it (Killing) being rooted

When negative elements are rooted in the month branch, they have

an especially strong influence on one’s life. But once the element is

removed from the stem, it becomes easier to manage.

Author note:

It is important that readers don’t fix the interpretation of the Killingelement as “bad”. Depending on the situation, the Killing element

can actually be useful/ helpful to the Day Master.

a) If or chances upon the Monkey

•  = Tiger

This phrase specifically discusses the Tiger and Monkey branches

(when they clash).

Author note:

At first glance, this phrase seems to discuss the Wood elements on

the stem. However, upon reading the next phrase (and discovering its

meaning), we know that this phrase refers to the Tiger branch, not the

 element per se.

Also, as mentioned in the first verse, the element here was included

to trick us. Those who do not understand the relationship between

the 10 stems (and 12 branches) will be lost trying to figure out the

significance of the  element, when it is merely a clever distraction.

When there is an excess of the  element, the chart/environment

b) North direction turns this into achievement

c) Although it is appropriate to see Water,

d) (One should) Be careful of a clash

This refers to the clash between the Fire (Snake) and Water (Pig)

branches. The first two phrases of this verse discuss the Heavenly stems,

while this phrase discusses the Earthly branches.

Example:

At a deeper level of understanding, these last two phrases (of this

verse) also indicates that it is auspicious to have the   (in Snake)

• Eight month = Rooster (it is the 8th animal in the 12 branches)

• Rooster is the Of ficer element of the Day Master

b)   meets deep Autumn Qi

Author note:

This is the key phrase that reveals a secret. Readers may easily

misinterpret this verse.

• Deep Autumn Qi (in Rooster month) does not refer to the  Qi

(which is inherent in the Rooster)

Rather, the C lassic c leverly mentions the word “deep” (or) here to

give us a clue to what his verse really refers to. The “deep” Autumn Qi

here actually refers to the hidden element in the Rooster.

• In reference to the previous phrase, the month that represents

is the Monkey month

Example:

This is what the Classic means by simultaneous/ double assistance.

Both (useful) Wealth and Of ficer elements are present in the Monkey,

at the same time.

d) Fame and profit will naturally prosper

Author Note:

This verse often misleads readers into thinking that the Rooster is helpful

to the  Day Master, when it is actually the Monkey that will bring

prosperity. This is one of the key verses in

this Classic that teaches us a secret:

each animal branch has a deep hiddenelement that is not obvious (just like how

• East = Wood ; South = Fire

Author Note:

This verse emphasizes the benefit of the Day Master being rooted.

If the Day Master is not rooted, the outcome of the chart will be

determined by other factors that are often not under one’s control.

This also means that one’s choices in life will often be easily influenced

by other people.

Explanation

d) Two Monkeys do not c lash with Tiger

Example:

Author Note:

This is yet another tricky verse (the Classics are full of tricks!)

This emphasizes the importance of the positioning of elements in the

Ba Zi chart. Even if there are animals that clash (for example, two Rats

and one Horse), it doesn’t necessarily mean that both Rats will be

affected.

In the first phrase (i.e. “Two Rats do not clash with Horse”, or

), there is ONE clash between the second Rat and the Horse. IF the

positioning of the elements are different however, (for example:

), then there will be two clashes – one clash between the first

Rat and horse, and the second clash between the Horse and second

Rat.

This verse tells us that it is not simply the elements

in the chart that matter, but also their relative

positioning. It can make a big difference in

the outcome of one’s Destiny!

The hour pillar represents one’s career, children and old age. If both

the Day Master and useful element (in the hour pillar) is rooted, onewill definitely achieve success in life!

There is an additional benefit of having a useful element in the hour

pillar – it cannot be “disturbed” or countered by negative elements in

the chart. For example, if the useful element is found in the year pillar,

it can be affected by any negative elements in the month pillar.

How to read this book

a) The Luck pillar runs for ten years

b) Separated into five good years, and five bad years

c) First look at the current year pillar

d) (Then one can) Thoroughly understand the ins and outs of the ten

years

Author note:

This verse teaches us the procedure of reading a Ba Zi chart. We

cannot solely rely on the Luck pillar to determine the good and bad

– we also have to look at the individual one-year pillars (in relation to

the ten-year luck pillar) to correctly interpret the outcome.

read this Classic but few truly understand it!

The Infinite Treasure has NEVER been taught by any Masters today.

Some have even critised it due to the absurdity of the way it was

written, and yet the content within this Treasure is as relevant in modern

times as it was thousands of years ago!

This book contains the full English translation of this rare Classic,

with detailed explanations of each paragraph. The 10 Day Master

elements will be thoroughly discussed with respect to each of the 12

month branches, for a total of 120 combinations.
