  • History of the Class of 119 3 6

ARLY in September 1 9 3 2 , the presen t lordly and dignified Seniors en teredPanzer College as Freshmen . For all our nonchalance , we were , perhaps , 5.

li tt le doubtful of the reception which would be accorded us . We had not long to

wai t , for during our park session we were made to realize how utterly insignific an t

and worthless a Freshman is . However,we carried

    '

    on , unti l a t the Sophomore party

our injured dignity was soothed . Later in the year we gained prestige by entertainingthe col lege at a party .

We were guided through the year by Adam Pejkowski as president ; Roslyn Hills

berg , vice presiden t ; Celes te Noback, secretary, and Mathew Dugan, treasurer .

When vacation had come and gone we found ou rse lves diminished in number . Onthe advice of the previous senior c lass we assumed “ the much needed studiousness and

digni ty” so well that the senior c lass of ’3 5 willed us “ a s a shweight to hang on the

end of our nose . The result of our c lass elec tions gave us Thomas Gerrity, as president

Roslyn Hillsberg, a s vice president ; Celes te Noback, as secretary, and Wil li am Schick ,as treasurer . During this year our c lass grew prominent in tha t it s members were

achieving fame in the field of Sport .

The fol lowing autumn brought . us back to s tart our Junior year , not so loath

to return as one might suppose, for we , had grown to love Panzer Col lege . The elec t ions

    this year were Danie l Keane,president ; Agnes Gradwell , vice-president ; R i ta Jaeger,

secretary ; William Schick, treasurer. This yea r mos t of the men had become members

of the Varsity Club and took part in the annual c lub show . At the graduation ex

ercises this year Frances Kimbal l and Ethel Simpson were awarded scholarships for

    scholastic and professional achievement .

How the years have flown"Seniors"Practice teaching"Gradua tion"Job ? Ourorfi cers for this year were Daniel Keane, president ; Agnes Gradwell , vice presiden t :

R i ta Jaeger, secretary ; William Schick , treasurer . Our senior year was broken up byprac tice teaching and tha t love and fellowship tha t had been so helpful during the p an

three years was missing , we had to be on our Own in the field. Saturday morningswere reunions and headaches for the professors .

Thus , our four College years have rol led by. We have made mistakes and c aused

more than one disturbance, but we hope the facul ty wi l l forget these and we hopea lso that the following c lasses will have noble records and s trive con tinuously to make

    our College the best .

our s tay we have been inculcated with the ideals and purposes of our organiza tion to

such an exten t that we feel our lives have been made richer and fuller by our assoc ia

To the brothers we leave to carry on, may you find the same happiness and rich

ness in personal achievement tha t we have . To the incoming offi cers of this chapter

good luck in everything you undertake . Remember a lways tha t we wi ll a id you in

Theta Chapter, here a t Panzer, was founded in 19 1 9 . Our membership has a lways been large considering the number of students a t Panzer Col lege.

Now for a bi t of news about the socia l ac tivi ties of Theta during the pas t

season . In September we were' very happy to once more welcome Vera Pavia as ourPresident . Our firs t interes t was di rec ted toward Rush Parties . The first one, particularly, sha l l long be remembered by all of us . For excitement and fun, a Scav

enger Hunt can not be surpassed. The signature of Dr . Kilander -was one of the

requisi tes of the -Hunt . As i t happened Dr . Kilander was attending a dinner a t one

of the loc al hotels— this is just an example of one of the difficulties encountered on

the night of nights"A bouquet of field flowers ( this, in Oc tober ) , a worm, and somany other ar tic les which i t seemed a lmost impossible to ob tain . Nevertheless, every

group returned with every artic le required . Of course, many of us were qui te a few

    minutes overdue"

Since that time we have had our regular meetings -every two weeks and af ter

each have had some sort of soc ia l ac tivi ty— Monopoly, .a _Xma s Party, with an exchange

of gif ts , a Golfing Party, and Roller-Skating.

    Theta’s annual,forma l

    ,

A most enjoyable time was had by all"

At our . las t meeting , Miss Agnes Burnham, Regis trar of Panzer Col lege, gave an

informal review of the book “ If I Have Four Apples ,” af ter which games were playedand refreshments served.

Our year has been a most pleasant and successful one . Although the loss of ourSenior members wi l l be grea t ly fel t, we are looking forward to lots of fun and a grand

  • Student CouncilHE Student Counci l is a s tudent organization composed of s tudent representa tives

of the various c lasses all ves ted wi th the s ame rights of speech and vote . These

representa tives consis t of the president and vice presiden t of each c lass who retain their

membership as long as they are in office ; two members a t -large from each c lass to ac t

as members as long as their conduc t i s desirable . There is also a facul ty adviser to

guide us along our troublesome ways and. ligh ten our path in accord ance with her better

judgment . This office is ably fi l led by Miss Margaret C . Brown . The faculty member

ha s freedom of speech but holds no vote .

The chief func tion of this organization is not only s tudent governmen t but i t

ac ts as an intermediary body between the faculty and the s tudents ; to represent s tudent

problems and to assume the responsibi li ty for the extra-curricular ac tivi ties outside of

athletics . The s tudent council s trives to bring about a c loser relationship between the

facu lty and the s tudent body which should resul t in a finer and better atmosphere

    for the college .

In working for these. attainments the counci l has promoted many important accomp lishment s desiring to make a defini te progress and real ly acc

whi le proj ec t each year. I t improved the assembly programs , i t s t he schoolring, promoted and regulated the environm enta l health cond t of the

s tudents ; took charge of the c ar parking problem in order that ny wi th

our surroundings ; secured adjus tments on problems and concessionS for the students ;published the handbook ; organized the poin t system for the extra— curricular awards ,exclusive of the a th letic association, and promoted a library drive to i

    ’ncrease our library.

Two of the outst anding projects of which every past , present and future counci l shou ld

be proud are the collec tion of the funds and erec tion of the Henry Panzer memorial

plaque, and the collec tion of songs wi th the intention of publishing a Panzer College

    song book .

Every year the members of the counci l at tend the Eas tern States Convention in

New York,of which organization we are a member . The different colleges and teacher

tra ining schools attend various lec tures and open discussions at which we presen t our

ideas and problems . The results of this convention each year helps us as we help others

to furnish new ideas to continue to help the Student Counc i l of our college to grow . All

the members a ttend a banquet and dance one is hardly over before we look ahead to

next year and the convention .

For the first time , a student counci l banquet was held this year at which time the

Old English P” for extra-curricular ac tivi ties was presented and the gold award for

three or four years service on the council . This event proved to be one of the most

enjoyable times of the year and has every reason to continue .

The success of the Student Counci l we owe to i ts leaders and to the cooperation

of the s tudents and facu lty to which we attribu te the harmony of the pas t few

years and a finer fa i th in the policies of Panzer Col lege which we know wil l continue

    through the years .

President FRANK CATALE Trea surer JOHN SWEENEYVice President JOHN MCKENNA Secreta ry LILA HANLEY

N a certain September morn in the year of Our Lord , 19 3 3 , the FreshmanClass of Panzer Col lege met for the firs t time . Our introduc tion to th

Facul ty and student body was most pleas ant and enlightening . I t Was at this timethat we were told (by the Sophs

) exac tly what was expec ted of us , and informed

    of our insignifi cance .

The Dean’s. Reception was our firs t soci al event at Panzer. We shal l long remem

ber that gay evening"Our first c lass get- together was a party a t Isabel Abercrombie’shomef The ever-present Sophomores "c ame, saw and were snubbed" However, the fol lowing day, WE were the sufferers"

Next on the c alendar was the Sophomore Dance, and we discovered tha t we ac

tually liked our tormentors . Then , quite suddenly, preparations were being made for

the Freshman Dance . We were es tablished and looking forward to the next semester.

Our Sophomore c lass was only half the size of our Freshman c lass but that didnot prevent us from d

    '

isp laying our supremacy.’Tis a grand feeling to be a Soph

but such a short reign"Dances and more dances— sorority and fraterni ty initiationsc ard party —C lass picnic— AND we are Juniors"

The mid-way mark has been passed . We are now accus tomed to the antics of

the Freshman, the " all-important” atti tude of the Sophomore ; we have attended and

enjoyed the same social activi ties ; we are undoubtedly more uni ted ; and we are eagerly

looking forward to the Grand Finalw —when we wil l be Seniors"

  • The Class of 19 3 8EPTEMBER, 1 9 3 5 , brought a new group of wondering freshmen to Panzer

College. After surviving the rigors of ini ti ation and park season, things in

general began to func tion . Ernest Burton was elec ted presiden t ; Marie Weidenbacher, vice presiden t ; Selma Gerber and Eli Brody, secretary and treasurer respec tively. Meet

ings were held regularly and we, the erring freshmen , soon realized tha t united weWould s tand and divided we would fall— into the hands of the sophs . The sophomorec lass soon proved that they were not so hard and cruel as we thought them . We en

joyed the dance they gave in our honor and were soon able to return the courtesywith a Hal lowe’en dance . These and other affairs helped to strengthen the bonds of

friendship . I t wa s fun being freshmen .When summer months were over a lively, enthusi astic group of sophomores t e

turned to Panzer where much energy was spent in “ welcoming” the new freshmen .

Time quickly flew and some thirty frosh

Who had arrived at the point where they were ca l loused by josh ,Returned to their work with assertion their goal .

Like thirty mustangs re leased from their fold,They began to wreak vengeance on the Freshmen so bold.

With Frank Wells as president, Marie Weidenbacher, vice-president, Mary Fran

ciose , secretary, and Robert Giraldi as treasurer, our c lass once again took up the reins

of soci al and business ac tivi ties . We had just set t led down to rou tine when we found

i t necessary to accept our president’s resigna tion and elec t his successor, Fred Schwarz .

The c lass of 1 9 3 8 has been the bane of the facul ty’s exi s tence because of their

abundan t vi tali ty. However, the s ame vi ta li ty has enabled them to become leaders

    in footba l l , basketbal l , track, and gymnas tic s .

    Happy landings to you , c lass of 1 93 6 .

  • History of the Fre shmen ClassEPTEMBER the nin th"A memorable date for the Freshmen of Panzer College.Nothing but strange faces , side glances and snickers from the upper-c lassmen .

How remote seemed even those members of our own group . Presently, matters were

allevi ated when genial gestures were exchanged between students and faculty.

With li t tle delay the out-door season at Wa t sessing Park s tarted . The . girls were

mos t unfashionably displayed with pale faces and nails, and bedecked with bright

colored hair ribbons . A wash cloth, dust pan , and whisk broom could be seen dangling

from the waist of every Freshman damsel . The men o f the c lass were arrayed in gayly

colored s tockings , pulled high over the cuffs of their trousers, dinks and most attrac tive

red ties . Carpet bags displaced brief cases nor were padd lings and duckings in the

brook neglec ted . The daily jog around the track was soon interspersed by the com

manding utterances of the upper- c lassmen . Park season was c limaxed when the Fresh

men girls were vic torious over the Sophomores in basebal l and soccer . This served only

to antagonize the losers who resolved to enforce more vigorous authori ty. In this waythey aroused the spiri t of uprising in the able-bodied Freshmen group who retali ated wi th

a “ Batt le Roya l . The victory was decidedly accredi ted to the Freshmen . As September

c losed , our initi ation terminated wi th a parade in which the Freshmen were featured .

Many hidden talents were uncovered as they performed before the City Hal l of our

    home town.

Early Oc tober found us ready to return to our indoor work and delving into ournew adventure with gusto. In Oc tober, the Freshman Class elec ted the followmgoflicers : presiden t, Vincent Brown ; vice-president , Betty Altenhofen ; secretary, Ei leen

    O’

Connor ; treasurer, Norman Ga thany, who was l ater replaced by Rolland Hi l l because

of his withdrawal from school .

The Sophomores very kindly condescended to honor the Freshmen with a masquerade

Hallowe’en dance. On December 2 0 th, the Freshmen returned the courtesy wi th aholid ay dance and entertainment with a ll the “ Yuletide colorings” and carols .

Besides c lass and soci al affairs s tudies were not neglec ted , and we have regis tered

some fine averages . As the year progressed , we began to find valuable materi al for the

various teams , the Athletic Associ ation , Student Counci l, Springboard , Sorori ties and the

Fraterni ty. At mid -year three new students entered Our c lass .

The height of the season came on St . Pa trick’s Day when the Sophomore men

suddenly realized tha t i t was necessary to revive some of the initia tion prac tices . The

Freshmen men were hurried into the locker room, besmeared wi th the color paint be

fi t ting the day, and received the annual haircut . Needless to say, the job was wel l done .

Now as the end of the firs t year draws near, we have become ful l-fledged members

of the Panzer family . We wish to begin next yea r’s work with as much enthusiasm

as we possessed this year and to cons tantly strive to perfec t ourse lves in our chosen

    profess ion .
