Most falls can be prevented
- One third to one half of the population over age 65 experience falls
- Two thirds of those who fall will have a recurring fall in the next six months
- Five percent of falls lead to fracture
- After a fall, the fear of falling again can limit the way a person lives their life
Causes
There are two categories into which the causes of falls lie:
Personal Factors:- weakness- balance problems - difficulty with gait- decreased vision Environmental factors:- cluttered house
- poor lighting- slippery shoes
Both personal and environmental factors can be addressed to decrease an individual’s fall risk.

REHABILITATION SERVICES
A team of licensed therapists provides a comprehensive assessment of an individual’s level of function in relation to general fall risk factors. A treatment plan is then developed based on the specific risk factors and the individual’s goals. A variety of innovative therapeutic techniques are utilized to ensure maximum success.

Cognitive Program

Symptoms may include:
Trouble remembering simple things (names, simple math)
Trouble concentrating on tasks Difficulty with word retrieval/finishing
sentences Disorientation; inability to find way in
a familiar place, inability to recall date, year, season, etc.
Withdrawal; lack of interest Personality changes Difficulty with gait and decreased

Goals of the Cognitive Program
Improve memory or teach compensation techniques

skillsStages of Dementia
1. Mild Cognitive Impairment- Some memory problems but continues to live independently
2. Mild Dementia- Impaired memory and thinking/problem solving. May require assistance with basic activities of daily living such as grooming, finances, and meal preparation
3. Moderate Dementia- Severe memory impairments with difficulty in communication. Unable to live alone and requires assistance with almost all basic activities
4. Severe Dementia- Severe problems with communication, frequent incontinence, constant care and supervision needed. Hands on assistance required for most activities
5. Profound Dementia-All verbal abilities are lost; loss of basic psychomotor skills (ability to walk, sit, hold head upright). Most at this stage are bedridden
Tips for Keeping the Geriatric Mind Healthy
Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration
Exercise the mind with activities such as bingo, crossword puzzles and trivia-keep the mind agile and sharp
Exercise or walk- physical activity improves mood and aids in restful sleep
Stay oriented to day and year. Keep calendars and clocks nearby- ensure clocks keep accurate time
Stimulate the senses-touch, taste, smell, sight, sound- to allow the use of the brain in different ways
