About Tchaikovsky’s Nine Sacred Pieces

Nearing the end of more than six years of wandering and soul-searching, Tchaikovsky began composing the first three of what would become known as the Nine Sacred Pieces in November of 1884, as he traveled to Davos by way of Berlin. Already well established in the public mind as arguably the greatest living Russian composer—and perhaps of all time—Tchaikovsky, ever diffident, still felt compelled to submit his new works of sacred music to his friend and colleague Mily Balakirev (1837-1910), director of the Imperial Court Chapel in St. Petersburg, for criticism and guidance. Balakirev offered a few pointed remarks about an “out-of-place dance rhythm” or two, but concluded that on the whole the works had significant merit and that the composer should continue towards publication. Over the course of the next several months, Tchaikovsky would write six more sacred pieces, finishing the last in the spring of 1885, not long after his return to Russia.

The Nine Sacred Pieces were not Tchaikovsky’s first foray into church music. His triumphant and much-loved Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (Op. 41) had been published in 1879, sparking a fierce legal battle with the then director of the Imperial Court Chapel Nikolai Bakhmetev and his rigid system of church music censorship—at the time of the dispute only six names were on the list of approved church composers (none well-known today). Tchaikovsky,

together with his publisher Peter Jurgenson, won the case in 1880, and thus the way was cleared not only for the Liturgy to be published, but, in effect, for an entire generation of Russian composers who had been officially banned from publishing liturgical music to begin offering their talents to the Church.

Over the course of the next several decades the face of Russian church music would change dramatically. For nearly two centuries Russia’s musical sensibilities had been shaped largely by the prevailing artistic trends of first Italy and then Germany. Many ties to the past were severed and forgotten in Russia’s pursuit of Westernization, and Russia’s indigenous znamenny chants and folk melodies fell into disuse. With the rise of nationalism in the second half of the 19th century, however, came a renewed interest in old music and a quest to discover and articulate those unique characteristics that make up the Russian musical identity. Following currents that were already moving all over Europe, Russian scholars began delving into ancient chant, and Russian composers began incorporating chant and folk motifs into their music.

While Tchaikovsky was perhaps less interested in musical nationalism than some of his contemporaries—Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Mussorgsky, and the rest of the “Mighty Handful,” for example—he nevertheless played a crucial role in crafting the nascent Russian musical identity. The Nine Sacred Pieces are a prime example of his contribution to that effort. While none of the Nine Pieces are explicitly based on ancient chant, all of them exhibit the characteristic modal harmonies and

Welcome to St. James Cathedral

St. James is the Cathedral Church for the Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle and its Archbishop, the Most Reverend J. Peter Sartain. We are also a parish church for a vibrant faith community of 2,500 households, with a long history that reaches back to Seattle’s early days. We are an inner-city parish with an extensive social outreach to the homeless and dis-advantaged of our city. We are a diverse community that welcomes, accepts, and celebrates the differences we all bring.

The Cathedral is also a center for many musical, cultural and ecumenical events, and a crossroads where ideas and chal-lenges both old and new are explored in the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Cathedral is a place where the rich and ongoing tradition of sacred music and art is treasured and expanded.

Above all, St. James Cathedral is a com-munity of prayer.

chant-like melodies that were becoming the musical language of the day—much more so, incidentally, than does the Liturgy—along with a creative restraint and understated emotionalism in keeping with the ascetic ethos of Orthodox services. Tonight’s program presents the Nine Pieces, minus two alternate Cherubic Hymns, in liturgical order rather than in the original published order.

Tchaikovsky’s All-Night Vigil

By the middle of the 19th century, efforts to remake Russian Orthodox sacred music in the image of its Western European counterparts—a process memorably chronicled in several of Cappella’s earlier programs—had essentially succeeded. Begun informally in the late seventeenth century and elevated to the level of national policy by composers of Italian opera at the court of Catherine the Great, this had led by the late 19th century to what some contemporary observers saw as a state of decadence. Among the country’s nobility and urban elite, Russia’s rich inheritance of native chant was all but forgotten in its original form. Instead, choirs tended to sing either simplified chants harmonized amateurishly by hacks associated with the Imperial Chapel (which had the right to censor all publications of church music) or free compositions in Western European styles that clashed with mystical ethos of Byzantine worship.

When he was at the height of his creative powers, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–93) made a series of decisive interventions in the field of Russian Orthodox music. The first was his Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, op. 41 of 1878, a musically original setting of the Orthodox Eucharist. The Liturgy provoked a notorious lawsuit filed by the head of the Imperial Chapel, who sought to halt the publication of Tchaikovsky’s work. Ultimately, this action had the opposite effect, for Tchaikovsky won the case and the Imperial Chapel’s right of censorship was effectively rescinded, unleashing within the realm of sacred music the creativity of an illustrious line of composers: Rimsky-Korsakov, Balakirev, Chesnokov and Rachmaninoff (the so-called ‘Vespers’, opus 37 of 1915), to name but a few.

The sacred masterpieces of Tchaikovsky’s successors, however, would have been unthinkable without the example provided to them by the other works he composed during the 1880s for Russian Orthodox worship. The first of these was his All-Night Vigil, opus 52, subtitled “An essay in harmonizing liturgical hymns.” In this work, Tchaikovsky returned directly to the sources of Russia’s musical traditions by setting for mixed chorus ancient chants of the Znamenny, Kievan and (Russian) “Greek” repertories. He did so in the context of a massive collection of music for the All-Night Vigil, a service celebrated on the eves of Sundays and major holidays. A composite service comprised of Orthodox Vespers (evening prayer), Orthros (the dawn prayer service also known as ‘Matins’) and the short service of Prime (sung at the “first hour” of a solar day), the All-Night Vigil was normally performed in an abbreviated form lasting two to three hours (only in strict monasteries would the service live up to its name). Each component of the service features a combination of psalms and hymns that may be fixed or variable, both with regard to their texts and music.

Bearing all of this in mind, Tchaikovsky chose to set only certain key elements from the standard “cut” Vigil service, a practice imitated by all subsequent composers of “All-Night Vigils.” Devotees of Rachmaninoff ’s work will be intrigued to hear Tchaikovsky’s rather different approaches to some of the same fixed chants of Vespers and Matins, notably including the opening psalm “Bless the Lord,” “Gladsome Light,” and the Great Doxology. Tchaikovsky, however, made far greater concessions to the service’s variability than did Rachmaninoff who, with one exception, set only fixed elements of Sunday’s Vigil. Thus several liturgical items in Tchaikovsky’s Opus 52 are provided with eight alternate settings, each one corresponding to the Orthodox Church’s eight-week cycle of hymns (the Octoechos) in successive musical modes. The result is a practical resource that could never be sung in its entirety at a single service, yet would still require additional music when used in actual worship.

Dictionary of Music and Musicians, and The Oxford Handbook of Byzantine Studies, Dr. Lingas is now completing two monographs: a study of Sunday Matins in the Rite of Hagia Sophia, and a historical introduction to Byzantine Chant for Yale University Press.

Cappella Romana

Its performances “like jeweled light flooding the space” (Los Angeles Times), Cappella Romana is a vocal chamber ensemble dedicated to combining passion with scholarship in its exploration of the musical traditions of the Christian East and West, with emphasis on early

and contemporary music. Founded in 1991, Cappella Romana’s name refers to the medieval Greek concept of the Roman oikoumene (inhabited world), which embraced Rome and Western Europe, as well as the Byzantine Empire of Constantinople (“New Rome”) and its Slavic commonwealth.

Flexible in size and configuration according to the demands of the repertory, Cappella Romana is based in the Pacific Northwest of the United States of America, where it presents annual concert series in Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington. It regularly tours in Europe and North America, having appeared at venues including the

Metropolitan Museum of Art, Trinity Wall Street and Music Before 1800 in New York, the J. Paul Getty Center in Los Angeles, St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, the Pontificio Istituto Orientale in Rome, the Sacred Music Festival of Patmos, the University of Oxford, Princeton University, and Yale University.

Cappella Romana has released over twenty compact discs. Its latest recordings are Cyprus: Between Greek East and Latin West (released November 2015), the large-scale Slavonic choral work Passion Week by Maximilian Steinberg (1883–1946), a student and son-in-law of Rimsky-Korsakov and teacher of Shostakovich, and Good Friday in Jerusalem: Medieval Byzantine Chant, all of which have received multiple rave critical reviews and the latter two debuted in the top 10 Classical Recordings on Billboard.

Other releases include Tikey Zes: Divine Liturgy, Arctic Light: Finnish Orthodox Music, Mt. Sinai: Frontier of Byzantium, Epiphany: Medieval Byzantine Chant and Byzantium 330–1453 (the official companion CD to the Royal Academy of Arts Exhibition), Byzantium in Rome: Medieval Byzantine Chant from Grottaferrata, The Fall of Constantinople, Richard Toensing: Kontakion on the Nativity of Christ, Peter Michaelides: The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom and The Divine Liturgy in English: The Complete Service in Byzantine Chant.

In 2010 it became a participant in the research project “Icons of Sound: Aesthetics and Acoustics of Hagia Sophia, Istanbul,” a collaboration between the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics and the Department of Art & Art History at Stanford University, where the ensemble also performed in 2013 and returned this past November 2016 with the program Icons of Sound, with the acoustics of Hagia Sophia imprinted upon the performance by Cappella Romana.

Its most recent tour was to the Iași Byzantine Music Festival in Iași, Romania (ibmf.ro), where its concert was broadcast on Romanian TV and seen by over 27,000 on live stream.

Mentors must be academic scientists or principal investigators who hold an appointment in a natural science department at a college, university, or other qualified research institution in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana or Alaska. The investigator also must have an active research program as evidenced by grants and/or publications. His or her institution accepts responsibility for the administration of the award.

High school teachers should possess academic qualifications in appropriate disciplines, in most cases a baccalaureate degree or the equivalent in chemistry, physics, or biology. Applicants must have a high school science appointment and be active in classroom teaching.

One of the main goals of PIS is to revitalize Partners’ teaching and to help them appreciate the use of inquiry-based methods in the teaching of science. Beginning with the 2015-2016 academic year, the Murdock Charitable Trust will be partnering with the Van Andel Education Institute to implement the QPOE2 Community of Scientific Practice Model.
