R. Kerry Clark, vice chairman of theBoard of Directors and a director ofProcter & Gamble Company, willreceive an honorary doctorate and serveas keynote speaker at St. BonaventureUniversity’s 146th CommencementExercises, slated for Sunday, May 14, inthe Reilly Center Arena.

Giving people, especially children,around the globe the opportunity to“live, learn and thrive” is Clark’s mis-sion as overseer of P&G’s FamilyHealth business, which is one-third ofP&G’s worldwide business.

P&G, says Clark, has two signatureprojects: 1. making the world’s watersafe to drink because more than a billionpeople in the world lack access to cleandrinking water, and 2. improving the lifeof children in developing countriesthrough such projects as the Children’sSafe Drinking Water program.

“If we focus on children now, wecan change the future for generations ofchildren,” says Clark.

“Kerry Clark is a global citizen and

business leader. He has an importantmessage to share with graduates whowill face an interconnected world andwho must work and serve as world citi-zens,” said St. Bonaventure Universitypresident Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F.,S.T.D.

Also receiving an honorary degreeduring Commencement Exercises willbe William L. Richter, one of the “TheAnniversary Campaign for St.Bonaventure University” leading philan-thropists, former trustee and successfulbusinessman.

SBU Theater One Act Festival

At 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 10, St.Bonaventure University’s Women’s StudiesProgram is offering an American classic forthe community’s entertainment in The ReginaA. Quick Center for the Arts.

Michele LaRue will present CharlottePerkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper,” animportant piece in American women’s history.Admission is free, and the play is open to thepublic.

In 1885 Charlotte Perkins Gilman, avibrant young woman and dedicated writer,was brought to her knees by marriage, a well-meaning husband and a questionable “cure.”Relying on blind faith, instinct and courage,she willed herself back to health. Perhaps themost vital element to her recovery was thewriting of her brilliant “The Yellow Wall-Paper,” published in 1892.

Turning autobiography to fiction,observed editor William Dean Howells, shepenned a story “to freeze our young blood.”“The Yellow Wallpaper” continues to chilltoday’s readers, dazzling feminists and histori-ans, mystery- and horror-story enthusiastsalike, with its wit, suspense and superlativestyle.

This production is fully staged and in peri-od costume. It features recorded Victorianmusic and sound effects that enhanceGilman’s remarkable story and moving prose.Developed for and touring under the auspicesof The East Lynne Company, N.J., this pro-duction has played 60 performances, fromNew York City to the Midwest. Gallery and Chicago’s Newberry Library. Michelle LaRue is an Illinois native based

in New Jersey, where she often performs withthe East Lynne Theater Company, uniquelyspecializing in American plays of the late 19thand early 20th centuries. This is her lastengagement on a tour that took her to St.Louis, central Illinois and Chicago. At the endof April, she’ll present Dorothy CanfieldFisher’s “The Bedquilt” at the internationalconference of the American Quilter’s Society,and in June, “The Yellow Wallpaper” for the2006 conference of the Charlotte PerkinsGilman Society.

In recent New York City seasons, LaRuehas been invited to premiere “Places, Please,Act One” at the prestigious New Dramatists,and selected to play “The Yellow Wallpaper”at the Double Helix Theater Company’s annu-al One Festival. Among LaRue’s favorite NewYork roles are Dinah, the bitter indentured ser-vant in “A New England Legend,” adaptedfrom Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The ScarletLetter”; Agatha, in “Key West,” a new come-dy by Jennifer Camp; and Katherine, inRobert Anderson’s poignant “Silent Night,Lonely Night.”

She is a member of New Jersey RepertoryCompany, which specializes in developing andproducing new scripts and is a longtime mem-ber of the three major actors’ unions: Actors’Equity Association, Screen Actors Guild andthe American Federation of Television andRadio Acts (AFTRA). As a theater editor andwriter, she belongs to Drama Desk, an organi-zation of New York drama critics.
