Ben and Jerry had always shared an interest of food, they decided that their business would involve food. They both decided to split the cost of a five dollar course in ice cream making from The Pennsylvania State University.

The next step included the renovation of an old gas station in the college town of Burlington, Vermont where they opened their first ice cream parlor with an investment of $12,000 on May 5, 1978.

Ben & Jerry's Light, introduced in 1989, had reduced levels of fat and cholesterol compared to the regular Ben & Jerry's ice cream, but no less fat than other 'regular' products then on the market. Sales of the products never exceeded about $9 million, and in December 1991 the line was declared a mistake.

Neither Ben nor Jerry was very good with money, and they had no idea what was going on financially. They actually closed the store one day to pay bills, putting up a sign that said: “We’re closed because we’re trying to figure out what’s going on.”

Ben and Jerry’s buys their brownies from Greyston Bakery, a bakery committed to providing jobs for those who might otherwise be unemployed.

They are "Fair Trade Certified", meaning that they do not buy ingredients in countries where others are being exploited for their labor.

Ben & Jerry's buys all of its milk and cream from farmers who do not use the growth hormone in their cows.

They use their funds, celebrity status, and day to day business operations to fight global warming, get actively involved in local environmental causes, and promote peace.

Ben and Jerry established the Ben & Jerry's Foundation to fund community oriented projects and to donate to nonprofit charities worldwide. Ben and Jerry’s Homemade, Inc. donates 7.5 percent of the company's annual pre-tax profits to the charity.
