34

WHAT IS IT?

The Pedreira Prado Lopes better known as PPL, is considered the oldest cluster of Belo Horizonte, as emerged in 1930, early in the construction of our capital. The PPL is very marked by violent scenario, as occurred in the region many robberies and drug trafficking in the 1990s.

+

HOW?

The PPL arose early in the construction of the city of Belo Horizonte - created to be the new capital of Minas Gerais, with the high demand of workers who came to im-prove their living working in construction. The reality for many of these people found that arrived was not the desired and needed the-se workers live in their own worksites. They began to settle in the area where today is the PPL, fleeing the high values of rents and seeking a better place to live.

+

WHEN?

The PPL began to be inhabited by workers in the late nineteenth century and grew parallel to the city of Belo Horizonte, when it received its residents who worked in the construction of the capital of Minas Gerais. Over the years, took a greater proportion and today has about ten thousand inhabitants on 140 square meters.

+

IMPORTANCE?

The PPL for BH is very important because, besides being the oldest cluster of the capi-tal, is located in a strategic point of the city, Avenida Antônio Carlos linking the city center to Pampulha region where major international events happen.

+

35

CURIOSITIES?+Today, there is an association called APACC (Association for the Protection and Support of Needy Communities and Children with Cancer) resident of the community founded by André Cunha, who was born, grew up and lived with the reality of the community.A curiosity of this community, is the legend of the blonde Bonfim, which since the 1970s scare residents and taxi drivers in the area of

lagoinha. Legend has it that the blonde woman appeared to locals who frequented the bars in the area and also for taxi drivers who worked there. According to residents, the woman appe-ared always well dressed and asked for a ride to go home and when they arrived on the sce-ne, people faced the cemetery Bonfim and the blonde disappeared.

Another important detail is that is close to the major sights of the capital as the Church of Our Lady of the Conception, St. Christopher Church and Baptist Church Pond, not to men-

tion the Cemetery of Bonfim containing traces of Gothic art deco to modernist, and receives free visits.

36

Today, the scenario of the quarry is better, because the issue of violence in the community declined significantly, with the implementation of two projects: the Program Smart - surrounding the Av Antonio Carlos - and the PAC - Growth Acceleration Program - that helps community

residents. On the social scene and housing, the commu-nity still suffers badly paved streets and lack of sanitation. Furthermore, only 6% of residents have completed high school.

WHAT IS MINERALOGY?

Mineralogy is the science of land dedicated to the study of chemistry, molecular and crystal structures and physical properties (including optical and mechanical) of minerals, as well as its genesis, metamorphism, weathering and chemical evolution.

+

HOW?

The history of the state of Minas Gerais and the production of ore found in their mountainous land rises in bold and perilous quest for the riches of the pioneers of the interior of Brazil. At the behest of the Por-tuguese crown these men embrenhavam in dense woods, following courses of rivers in search of what could be reversed in profit for Portugal. Shortly after the beginning of the seventeenth century, began to aim the search for gold and precious stones coveted by Portuguese colonists.

+ IMPORTANCE

This entire context of exploitation of these pre-cious metals has been of great importance to the State of Minas Gerais. Faced with the re-lentless pursuit of the pioneers and explorers was the settlement of the state, the opening of roads, founding cities, as well as the birth of one of the most important cultural movements of the country. Mining also was responsible for im-portant changes in the economic, social, political and administrative colony.

+

The first hint of gold in Minas Gerais oc-curred around 1693, by Paulo Antônio Ro-drigues Arzão, generating a race for settlers into the territories of Ouro Preto, Mariana Cachoeira do Campo, Itabira and Ouro Bran-co. With the discovery of diamonds in the mining land, this migration had large increase

39

CURIOSITIES+Importantly this movement that mining provided the cultural society the emergence of great artists miners, among them stand out in the literature related to the Arcadian poets.Antônio Francisco Lisboa, better known as Master Aleijadinho, along with master Valentine were the most important names in architecture

and sculpture of the baroque. And all this archi-tectural and sculptural art is seen in churches, mainly in the cities of Ouro Preto, Mariana, São João Del Rei, Diamantina, Congonhas and Sabará, beyond the colonial style buildings.

It is also estimated that about this period appro-ximately 800 thousand Portuguese came to the

colony, corresponding to 40% of the population.

40

Today, in relation to geological exploration, mi-ning has been fulfilling the line that was drawn over its history and development, well represen-ted in the Constituent Assembly. However, little action is directed to the ex-ploratory activity and no notable discovery is recorded as a result of some exploratory effort that was made in the last 15 years. In Minas Gerais can find great mineral wealth, and with the mineral production of more pro-minent iron ore, gold and niobium (Nb iron). In the heart of Mines, we have the great iron

quadrangle bounded by an area equivalent to 7,500km ², consisting of 25 cities and is still the richest region of the state, and the largest and most important in the production of iron ore from Brazil, according with the Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM) Minas Gerais is responsible for about 70% of the production of iron ore country.
