A Heroic CodeAug. 14 is Navajo Code Talkers

Day, when the Navajo Nationrecognizes the men whoseunbroken military code played apivotal role during World War II.

In the early months of the war,Japanese intelligence had brokenevery code used by U.S. forces.Philip Johnston, a World War Iveteran who was raised on aNavajo reservation, suggested theNavajo language—which has noalphabet and is almost impossibleto master by outsiders—be usedfor military communications.

In 1942, the first 29 NavajoCode Talkers were recruited byJohnston, and they created a codethat eventually consisted of morethan 600 terms. The code was notallowed to be written down, sothe members of the unit had to actas “living codes” and rapidly recallwords during battle.

Credit is given to the CodeTalkers for securing victory duringIwo Jima, when they perfectlycoded more than 800transmissions in the battle’s first48 hours alone.

The success of their code led itto remain a military secret for twodecades. In 1992, the U.S.Department of Defense honoredthe Code Talkers for their militarycontributions, and, in 2001, theoriginal 29 as well as later CodeTalkers received CongressionalMedals of Honor.

Neighborhood NewsThe dog days of August are uponus! Or maybe not! What’s goingon with the weather! Regardless, the Neighborhood keeps movingforward rain, wind or shine. Wehave so many new faces in the

Neighborhood and they arechallenging us to meet their everevolving activity needs. While wehave planned, themed activities

scheduled 7 days a week, wealways welcome feedback and

suggestions from family memberson how we can engage our

residents in the best way possible.Don’t be shy, if you see Ned

walking around and you have anidea, tell him. But beware ... if youhave a good idea he might ask you

to help out!

Circle of FriendsNews

August is an exciting time in theCircle of Friends. The folks in theCircle are finishing up their sandcandle project and will also be

working on some framed vacationpictures to spruce up their

apartments. Belmont Village isalso rolling out a new andimproved Activity Leader

Certification program. It will beongoing for several months and is

designed to deepen ourunderstanding of how memoryworks in our own minds and

bringing that increased awarenessinto the activities that are

designed to engage and stimulateour residents.

Employee of the MonthCongratulations to Maria Diaz!!!

Maria is the Employee of the Month for August, and it is WELL deserved.Maria has worked at Belmont for several years; she is one of our

time to lend a hand, whether it is to a resident or another team member. We are lucky to have her!

NewsHealth

Urinary tract infections (UTI)aren’t just a nuisance - they can

cause serious health problems. AUrinary Tract Infection happenswhen bacteria in the bladder orkidney multiplies in the urine.Left untreated, a urinary tract

infection can become somethingmore serious than merely a set ofuncomfortable symptoms. UTIs

can lead to acute or chronickidney infections, which could

permanently damage the kidneysand even lead to kidney failure.UTIs are also a leading cause of

sepsis, a potentiallylife-threatening infection of the

bloodstream.The population most likely to

experience UTIs is seniors. Seniorsare more vulnerable to UTIs for

many reasons.Younger people tend to empty the

bladder upon urination, whichkeep bacteria from accumulatingwithin the bladder. Senior men

and women experience aweakening of the muscles of the

bladder, which leads to moreurine being retained in the

bladder, poor bladder emptyingand incontinence, which can lead

to UTIs.Typical signs and symptoms of

UTIs are urine that appear cloudy, bloody urine, strong or

foul-smelling urine odor, frequentor urgent need to urinate, pain orburning with urination, pressure

in the lower pelvis, low gradefever, night sweats, shaking

or chills.UTIs in seniors are often mistakenas the early stages of dementia or

Alzheimer because symptomsinclude confusion, or delirium

like state, agitation,hallucinations, behavioral

changes, poor motor skills ordizziness and falling.

The following conditions makeseniors more susceptible to UTIs,Diabetes, urinary retention, use of

catheter, bowel incontinence, enlarged prostate, immobility, surgery of any area around the

bladder and kidney stones.People with incontinence are atrisk for UTIs because of the close

contact that adult briefs have withtheir skin, which can reintroducebacteria into the bladder. Somerecommendations to reduce the

risk is to change the briefsfrequently, encourage front to

back cleansing, keep the genitalarea clean, set reminders for thosewho are memory-impaired to try

to use the bathroom instead of theadult brief, drink plenty of water, avoid caffeine and alcohol, always

wipe from front to back forwomen and wear cotton-clothunderwear and change them at

least once daily. If you think youmight have urinary tract infection,

see your doctor right away.
