Green Ideas forGolden Years
Take an intergenerational naturewalk. Go for a nature walk withyour grandchildren or otheryoungsters and share your favoriteparts of nature. Bring along a trashbag and pick up any litter you seealong the way.
Plant a legend. Arbor Day takesplace this month, too. Honorboth days by planting a tree withfriends and family. This act willleave a legend of beauty forgenerations to come.
Lead a letter-writing charge.Contact your local or stategovernments about ways toprotect or improve theenvironment where you live.Encourage others to do the same.
Beautiful SpringBlossoms
Freshly blooming flowers areone of the sure signs of spring.Breathe in the beauty of theseseasonal favorites:
Tulip. A classic symbol ofspring, tulips are native to CentralAsia but are now commonlyassociated with the Netherlands.Tulips are available in nearly everycolor of the rainbow and are oneof the world’s most popularflowers.
Daffodil. Commonly callednarcissus, which is the botanicalgenus that also includes jonquilsand paperwhites, thetrumpet-shaped daffodil is mostpopularly available in yellowshades, but they can also be white, orange, pink or two-toned.
Crocus. In some parts of thecountry, certain varieties of crocuspeek up out of the snow to signalthe arrival of spring. Theircup-shaped blossoms are typicallyyellow, white or purple.
Pansy. This annual is one of thebest flowers to plant in earlyspring containers, since theybloom best in cooler weather.Common colors include yellow, purple and blue, and the“smiling” centers of two-tonedvarieties are cheerful choices forthe changing seasons.

A Shoutout forParkinson’s Therapy
Parkinson’s Disease AwarenessMonth during April provides agreat opportunity to speak upabout this condition, whichaffects millions of people aroundthe globe.
However, speaking up is exactlywhat many Parkinson’s patientsstruggle with, as nearly 90 percentof people with PD experiencespeech problems such as a soft orbreathy voice, monotone, hoarseness and articulation issues.
Fortunately, a therapy calledLSVT LOUD (named after PDpatient Lee Silverman) has provento help many people with early- tomiddle-stage Parkinson’s gainback their voice.
For those without access to aspeech therapist, online sessionsare available.

Nurse’s Notes
April is acknowledged asNational Stress-Awareness Month. We use the word “stress” when wefeel that everything seems to havebeen too much – we areoverwhelmed and wonderwhether we can cope with thepressures placed upon us.
Our body has a way ofresponding to stressful eventscalled the fight-or-flight response. When your brain perceives athreat, it signals your body torelease a burst of hormones to fuelyour capacity for a response. Thisresponse may trigger a higherheart rate, heightened musclepreparedness, and alertness – allof which protect us in a dangerousor challenging situation. Othersymptoms include high bloodpressure, breathing becomes morerapid, digestive system slowsdown, and immune systemgoes down.
How we respond to stressaffects our health. Everyone reactsdifferently to stressful situations. What one person finds stressful, another may not at all. Here aresome of things we can do whendealing with stress:
• Exercise – Regular exercise isvery important because it canincrease levels of endorphins(natural mood enhancers).
• Nutrition – Limit excessconsumption of caffeine, sugar, salt and foods high insaturated fat. Drink water!
• Breathing – Controlledbreathing not only keeps themind and body functioningat their best, it can also lowerblood pressure, and promotefeelings of calm andrelaxation.
