Fellow Racing Fan,

Even if 2020 won’t go down as a banner year, the Triple Crown perseveres. To that point, appropriate adjustments have been made. The classics’ batting order has changed. Leading off on June 20 will be the Belmont Stakes. Hitting in the two-hole on September 5 will be the Kentucky Derby. And rounding out the series will be Preakness on October 3.

As the leadoff hitter, the Belmont Stakes has been asked to shorten its swing, get on base, and set the table for Derby and Preakness. Therefore, this year, the Belmont Stakes will be contested at one mile and one-eighth instead of its traditional, swing-from-the-heels distance of one mile and one-half. Additionally, because of Belmont’s mile and one-half track configuration, the mile and one-eighth distance will be completed around one turn. Less distance around one bend, instead of two, should be A-OK with anticipated favorite Tiz the Law’s connections. One less turn ought to help keep him in the clear.

TIZ THE LAW: In a world where nearly everything has been turned upside down, 2020 has gone well for Belmont favorite Tiz the Law. Following three races at age two, the once-beaten colt has made a pair of starts for trainer Barclay Tagg this year and couldn’t have looked better while winning both races at Gulfstream Park—the Grade 3 Holy Bull, by three lengths, and the Grade 1 Curlin Florida Derby by more than four lengths. You’re forgiven if you feel as if the Florida Derby was contested about a year ago. Actually, it was March 28, and the effort perfectly poised Tiz the Law to bloom on the first Saturday in May. Unfortunately, the Kentucky Derby is postponed until September. No matter. Since the Florida Derby, Tiz the Law has trained forwardly for his connections as they anxiously await the Belmont Stakes, where this colt will start as a deserving and prohibitive favorite.

BASIN: This son of Liam’s Map showed promise at age two while winning two of three starts—a maiden and the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga. In 2020, he has made three starts for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, all stakes at Oaklawn Park with mixed reviews. Off a layoff from September, he finished third in March’s Grade 2 Rebel Stakes, more than seven lengths behind Nadal and Excession. Next out, in April, he was a disappointing fourth in the ungraded Oaklawn Stakes. The skies brightened a bit for him in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby when he was second, beaten more than seven lengths by the streaking, but since-sidelined, Charlatan. Basin displayed a bit more speed in his last race and probably will be asked to stalk the early Belmont pace.

TAP IT TO WIN: If you’re looking for the ‘now’ horse in the Belmont Stakes, this guy could fit the bill. He won an allowance race at Belmont Park on June 4 going wire-to-wire by five lengths. He’ll bounce back to the races in just 16 days! That’s a very quick turnaround for a modern stakes horse. This son of Tapit raced four times as a juvenile and went to the sidelines off two poor performances. He returned a seemingly new boy in 2020, with a pair of allowance wins at Gulfstream and Belmont—at six furlongs and at one mile and one-sixteenth. Can he successfully strike while the iron is hot and step up to act with the big boys? Maybe. He’s got some speed in a race that lacks that quality, so look for him to set the early Belmont pace.

SOLE VOLANTE: He was unbeaten in two races last year and has won four of six lifetime starts. His major claim to fame is victory in the 2020 Grade 3 Sam F. Davis at Tampa Bay Downs, followed by a second in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby and an old-school allowance victory at Gulfstream 10 days before the Belmont Stakes. His running style ought to place him well back early in the Belmont and he could be forced wide on the turn as he revs-up for a clear finish. This son of Karonkatie has displayed talent on occasion, but he will need a contested early pace to be successful in the most challenging test of his budding career.

By Johnny D., @XBJohnnyD

MODERNIST: This son of Uncle Mo parlayed a January Aqueduct maiden victory over a good track into a February upset in the Grade 2 Risen Star at Fair Grounds. He returned in March to finish third from the disadvantaged 14 post in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby, also at Fair Grounds. Both of his victories have come when he’s been on or near the early lead. However, both of those races had slow early paces. Things should get somewhat livelier up front in the Belmont, but not torrid. There really isn’t much early speed in this race. Expect Tap It to Win, Basin and Tiz the Law to be among the early leaders. Modernist could be just off that early mix and will need to show he can close from a bit off the pace.

MAX PLAYER: Based on breeding, this nearly unbeaten son of Honor Code has a right to continue to develop. He came up a half-length short of victory first time out at Parx at one mile and has won two subsequent starts. He last raced in the mile and one-eighth Grade 3 Withers on Feb. 1 and came home strongly to win by three and one-quarter lengths. He’s worked roughly every two weeks since then and posted a nice bullet five-furlong move on June 3 to signal readiness. Trainer Linda Rice reports that he has matured physically and mentally, and recognizes that this one needs to take another forward step to threaten in the Belmont Stakes.

DR POST: Winner of two of three starts, Dr Post is an interesting Belmont participant. The son of Quality Road hails from the powerful Todd Pletcher stable and is on a roll with Gulfstream maiden and stakes victories in his last two starts. He’s taken serious money in all three lifetime starts—favored in each at $.50, $1.00 and $1.10-to-1. He’s got a close-up early running style, so he’s not as pace-dependent as others. Sure, this is a step up in competition for him, but he certainly has license to improve even more, especially for a trainer who wins races at Belmont Park with regularity.

FARMINGTON ROAD: A stone closer, this son of Quality Road will need pace help up front to prop up his late kick. There doesn’t appear to be much speed in this lineup. Then again, the post-position draw could affect how the race is ridden and sometimes funny things happen. This colt’s only win came at Tampa Bay Downs in January. Since, he’s been close—second, beaten one-half length in the Oaklawn Stakes. He’s been worse than fourth just once in six starts and that was first out, going six furlongs at Belmont Park, so he might be a decent superfecta play at big odds.

KNOW THISSHORT-CHANGED In 2020, the 1-1/8 miles Belmont Stakes will be 220 yards shorter than the Kentucky Derby and 110 yards shorter than the Preakness Stakes. The Belmont has been contested at 1-1/2 miles since 1926, and not at this distance since 1893-’94 when held at Morris Park.

WHERE ARE THE BOMBERS? The longest price in the 2019 Belmont Stakes was just 21-1 odds, and it’s notable that only 1 edition of this race since 2006 has had even a single starter go off more than 40-1. The wagering masses cover their bases at Belmont.

PUBLIC TRUST UNDER FIREWhile it’s true that 42% of favorites have won the 151 editions of the Belmont Stakes, the chalk is just 2-for-the-last-14. Triple Crown security by American Pharoah (2015) and Justify (2018) have saved face for the recent favorites.

?

ANALYSIS: COVID-19 has given us a Belmont-20 like no other. Out are the rigors of the Triple Crown escalation and the mile and one-half test of a champion. In are the brilliance of 1-turn racehorses and the freshest cast of 3-year-olds to embark on this treasured series in modern history. Several enter the Belmont away since the May 2 Arkansas Derby, and some ripened as far back as March’s Florida and Louisiana Derbies, much less February’s Withers. No matter when or how far the Belmont Stakes may be, it’s always been good policy to have some past success over the Big Sandy oval. Also note: Since 2013, more than half the stakes winners at 1-1/8 miles on dirt at Belmont have paid $5 or less as favorites, a very trustworthy trip. MAIN CONTENDERS: TIZ THE LAW ran a stronger race in February’s Holy Bull than he did in March’s Florida Derby. To his credit, his slight regression still was good enough to win a signature Grade 1 race by more than 4 widening lengths. The extra time to the rescheduled Belmont Stakes once again has him sitting on tilt for a big effort like his seasonal return. The heavy favorite looms large with a return to 1-turn racing on Long Island, where he won last year’s Champagne Stakes in dynamite fashion. TAP IT TO WIN, with John Velazquez up, almost makes too much sense. Trainer Mark Casse has won the last 2 Triple Crown races (War of Will and Sir Winston in the 2019 Preakness and Belmont). And this could be the pace controller over a track that produced his strong allowance victory June 4. To boot, sire Tapit’s Belmont Stakes success has been remarkable with 6 straight years producing a top-3 finisher in this race, including 3 winners. Late-running SOLE VOLANTE may be wrongly dismissed by some for having raced just 10 days prior to the Belmont in allowance company. But he got exactly what he needed out of that 1-turn mile.

VALUE PLAYS: Opposition to the chalks starts with Todd Pletcher’s Belmont Stakes success, including victories in 2007, 2013 and 2017. Pletcher brings the duo of FARMINGTON ROAD and DR POST with something still to prove at the top level. If they split wagering dollars, that could land both in the upper single-digit odds with FARMINGTON ROAD likely to be the higher of the two. Meanwhile, the talented BASIN has struck me as distance-limited this season, so the shortened trip and 1-turn nature of this new-fangled Belmont Stakes might help him more than any other runner. His Arkansas Derby was a step in the right direction. Offspring of sire Liam’s Map have had exceptional success at Belmont Park on dirt in limited starts.

ANALYSIS: Clearly, this is not your father’s Belmont Stakes, or yours, or anybody else’s. Not only does it precede the Kentucky Derby and Preakness rather than occupy its traditional position as the third jewel, it has been shortened to a mile and one-eighth and thus becomes the first Triple Crown race ever to be contested around one turn. With several potential contenders either injured and off the trail or bypassing the race to point for the rescheduled Run for the Roses (Sept. 5), this year’s Belmont will offer what surely will be an odds-on favorite, thus requiring creative wagering strategy to manufacture value. MAIN CONTENDERS: Other than the possibility of a wet track that could be TIZ THE LAW’s kryptonite, there is no logical reason why the Barclay Tagg-trained colt won’t win the first jewel in the restructured 2020 Triple Crown. A much-troubled third-place finish in a sea of slop in November’s Grade 3 Kentucky Jockey Club is the only blemish on a resume that has seen each of his four career victories accomplished by daylight and dominance. He’s already a Grade 1 winner at Belmont Park and owns the tractability and acceleration that makes him compatible with any type of trip, distance or race flow. While his numbers have fluctuated, the son of Constitution did earn a triple-digit Beyer Speed Figure when winning the Grade 2 Holy Bull, indicating he can be as fast as he needs to be.

VALUE PLAYS: TAP IT TO WIN will be the controlling speed. He’s fast, impeccably-bred, and fresh from a career-top, gate-to-wire win in a strong middle-distance race that makes him dangerous right back – despite the step up in class and an extra half-furlong. There’s always the possibility that he’ll regress off a taxing effort, but if not he could take the field a very long way. DR POST will be ideally suited by Belmont Park’s sweeping turns and his relentless style should make him even more effective as the distances increase. His workouts since his victory in the Unbridled Stakes in late April indicate his rapid rate of improvement hasn’t lost any steam.

$100 WAGERING STRATEGY:• $5 Exacta Box: TIZ THE LAW, TAP IT TO WIN, DR POST ($30)• $5 Trifecta Box: TIZ THE LAW, TAP IT TO WIN, DR POST ($30)• $20 Exacta Part-Wheel: TIZ THE LAW over TAP IT TO WIN and DR POST ($40)

WORKING IT OUT

HORSE DATE TRACK DISTANCE CONDITION TIMETiz the Law 5/24 Palm Meadows 5 furlongs fast :59.75 Tiz the Law 6/8 Belmont 5 furlongs fast 1:00.53MILLIE BALL’S ANALYSIS: Tiz the Law had his serious drill on May 24 before leaving Florida, with company providing a target. He finished the work the right way and finished his series with two maintenance works, his last being on the surface he will race over. His jockey Manny Franco partnered him for this June 8 move at Belmont, which appeared to be nothing more than a routine drill. Tiz the Law looked very comfortable moving over the dirt, indicating with his ears that he was focused, alert and ready for any signal given by his pilot. Barclay Tagg commented that everything went according to plan with his colt, who galloped out a strong three-quarters in 1:12:86 and seven-eighths in 1:25:28. The timing of this race looks ideal for the son of Constitution based on the spacing of his prior races.

Modernist 5/28 Payson Park 5 furlongs fast 1:01.60 MILLIE BALL’S ANALYSIS: Modernist looked sharp in his key work for the Belmont Stakes partnered up for the second consecutive week with the older, multiple stakes winner Tacitus. In fact, Modernist made his stablemate look rather average in this May 28 drill. Modernist’s style of running was not aided by his post position draw of 14 in the Grade 2 Louisianna Derby. He ended up wide on both turns, but still held his position through the stretch. The Uncle Mo colt has won at nine furlongs on two occasions, and will have the fortune of avoiding the talented speed horse Charlatan, who has been sidelined. He will need to bring his ‘A game’ off the three-month break, but his training suggests he has progressed from his March 21 race at Fair Grounds.

Farmington Road 6/5 Palm Beach Downs 5 furlongs fast 1:01.20ZOE CADMAN’S ANALYSIS: Light-framed son of Quality Road out of the Langfuhr mare Silver la Belle obviously likes an off track (as do a lot of Quality Roads, especially with some turf on the dam side). His race at Oaklawn in the slop was visually impressive, and should we have any rain at Big Sandy, this will move him up terrifically. As for his works, they are not flashy, but good enough, and certainly as good as Dr Post on June 5 in company together. I’m not convinced the turn-back to one turn is going to help him, but in a rapidly diminishing group of 3-year-olds who may be Kentucky Derby-bound, if this guy can hit the board at Belmont, then I can almost guarantee he will still be around in September.

Dr Post 5/29 Palm Beach Downs 5 furlongs fast 1:00.60 ZOE CADMAN’S ANALYSIS: He looked super flashy breaking his maiden March 29 and immediately went into my Derby Top 10. Numbers-wise, he ‘appeared’ to regress since, but has shown a bit of moxie to extricate himself from trouble. Watching him in the mornings, he does have a tendency to get a bit hot and washy, but this is normal for the son of Quality Road. His May 29 work was good, always in hand, and arguably best over a very lackluster Gouverneur Morris, who since has been re-directed to July’s Blue Grass at Keeneland (hopefully the extra time will allow him to regroup). Dr Post’s June 5 work with Farmington Road was nothing more than a pure maintenance work. One thing that must not be lost is that this Belmont Stakes is around one turn, which I believe will suit Dr Post, who is out of a Hennessy mare. I will use Dr Post underneath Tiz the Law, along with Basin.
