1. Why does Brave Orchid, Kingston’s mother, refer to her children as “Her American children” (Kingston 113)?– They were born in America– They do not honor Chinese traditions– They are different from her Chinese children who passed away

(whether or not they actually existed!)2. Why does Brave Orchid think her children “groan” and “leave”

whenever she shows their trophies or talks about their accomplishments? (Kingston 128-129)– They are embarrassed and/or are uncomfortable– They think Brave Orchid focuses on unimportant things, like awards– Because Brave Orchid doesn’t understand their embarrassment, she

hypothesizes that they “stole” the trophies (they did not!)

3. Why was Moon Orchid, Kingston’s aunt, surprised when her nieces looked her directly in the eye?– This was seen as very rude in Chinese culture– She did not think that her nieces would be looking for “lies” in their aunt’s

eyes– (sidenote: p. 121 “impolite” in Chinese is the same word as

“untraditional”)4. Why was Moon Orchid’s husband unhappy to see her?

– He did not want her to be in America– He had started over again with a new wife– It was illegal to have two wives in America

5. What does Brave Orchid think is the cause of Moon Orchid’s illness?– BRAVE ORCHID thinks it is the fact that Moon Orchid’s husband rejected

and abandoned Mood Orchid– Moon Orchid simply could not adjust to American life, with her stress

increased by the fact that her husband “officially” left her– Moon Orchid has become incredibly paranoid about Mexicans and all

other people that she does not completely understand

Quotation #1• “Immigrants nowadays were bandits, beating up store owners and

stealing from them rather than working. It must’ve been the Communists who taught them those habits” (Kingston 127).

• Considering what we have learned about Communism in China, what is the significance of this quote?– Communism = the reason Kingston’s family left China– Kingston’s mother has a negative view of Communism, so anyone who has

immigrated recently from China must have bad, Communist habits (Brave Orchid’s viewpoint)

– The bad, Communist habits might be related to the Communist ideal of sharing everything and not (necessarily) working to earn it

– ALSO, Mao’s programs were supposed to bring about prosperity and happiness, but the unintended effect was that people were starving b/c the programs were not successful, so people under Mao’s rule sometimes had to steal to survive

windows, and she must look like a ghost from China. They had indeed entered the land of ghosts, and they had become ghosts” (Kingston 153).

• Considering what we have discussed about the use of ghosts in the text, what is the significance of this quote?– It has been about 35 years since Moon Orchid and her husband have seen

each other– People from America are viewed by Brave Orchid as “ghosts,” with

America being “the land of ghosts”– Moon Orchid’s husband has become completely Americanized, so he has

become an American “ghost”– Moon Orchid is like a ghost, too, because she is so much older than she

was, and is from a foreign, ancient land, observing Chinese traditions– The American ghost (her husband) and the Chinese ghost (Moon Orchid)

are no longer compatible
