Shakespearean Sonnet• Sonnet- a 14 line poem• Shakespearean Sonnet – All Shakespearean sonnets
contain the following– Three quatrains– Ends in a couplet– Is written in iambic pentameter– Has rhyme scheme in the following pattern:
• a,b,a,b,c,d,c,d,e,f,e,f,g,g
• Iambic Pentameter- When a line has exactly 10 syllables and has a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables

Shakespearean Sonnet Cont.• Iambic Pentameter- When a line has exactly 10
syllables and has a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables
• Rhyme scheme – the identification of a pattern of sounds in a poem or sonnet
• Stanza- arrangement or a certain number of lines sharing a specific rhyme, rhythm, length, etc. (a “paragraph” of poetry)
• Quatrain – a four line stanza• Couplet – a pair of lines that rhyme (2 rhyming lines)
