The Scientific RevolutionChapter 17 – Section 1

Page 6: Bellringer – 10/30 Title: Religion vs Nature Does God cause natural phenomena or does nature?

•New technology required more science and spot-on calculations.

•Problems like finding out how much a ship could carry required mathematics.

•People like Nicholas Copernicus, Johannes Kepler, Galileo, and Isaac Newton were great mathematicians. They challenged the old ideas of Aristotle and Greek philosophers.

•They thought that the secrets of nature were disguised in math.

Ptolemy

•Ptolemy who lived around the year 1000, was a great astronomer.

•During the Middle Ages, the Ptolemaic system of the universe was developed.

•This shown that all planets revolved around the Earth= geocentric.

Page 8: Bellringer – 10/30 Title: Religion vs Nature Does God cause natural phenomena or does nature?

Copernicus•Copernicus, a modern

mathematician, felt like Ptolemy was wrong.

•He said that the universe was heliocentric, or sun-centered.

•He really figured out that the Earth moves on its axis and revolves around the Sun.

Page 9: Bellringer – 10/30 Title: Religion vs Nature Does God cause natural phenomena or does nature?

Kepler•Johannes Kepler was

also a mathematician. •He proved that the

Sun was in the center, and added that the orbits were not circular as Copernicus thought, but elliptical.

•This is called Kepler's First Law.

Page 10: Bellringer – 10/30 Title: Religion vs Nature Does God cause natural phenomena or does nature?

He found four moons around Jupiter, and mountains on our moon!

Galileo•Galileo became the most famous

mathematician, he attracted the attention of the Catholic Church.

•He published his findings in 1610, which spread like wildfire because of the printing press.

•He said that the Earth was not the center, and that other planets were made of the same stuff.

Page 11: Bellringer – 10/30 Title: Religion vs Nature Does God cause natural phenomena or does nature?

Isaac Newton wrote a book called Principia. He found out that planets do not go off in a straight line because of the universal law of gravitation. Every object is attracted to every other object by gravity. He put all the ideas together to create a modern picture of the solar system.

He also created physics and calculus. Thanks.

Galen, a Greek doctor, lived in the year 200. His understanding of the human body relied on animal dissection. He was wrong about a lot of things. New science was starting to be practiced in the 16th century.

Andreas Vesalius:wrote a book in 1543 about his findings when he studied human bodies as a surgeon. Although he made several new discoveries, he still thought two kinds of blood flowed through the veins and arteries.

William Harvey:published a book called On the Motion of the Heart and Blood, in 1628.He proved the heart was the pump, that there was one kind of blood, and that it flowed in a circuit through the body.

Robert Boyle:He was one of the first scientists to conduct controlled experiments. He discovered chemical properties of gases, which led to Boyle's Law.This states that the volume of gas varies with the pressure put on it.

Women and the Origins of ScienceMargaret Cavendish:She wrote several books, and was critical that humans could become masters of nature through science. Many other women were astronomers, trained by their husbands or fathers at home. University was not a place for women. The most famous is Maria Winkelmann. She discovered a comet. She wanted to go to school, but was not allowed.

Descartes and Reason page 516.He wrote about the doubt everyone had during the times. He said, "I think, therefore I am." He put importance on his own mind, and said that the body and mind are two separate things. He is called the Father of Rationalism, which is the belief that reason is the source of knowledge.

Scientific Method:Francis BaconAn English philosopher and not a scientist. However, he felt that scientists should make careful observations to test theories (hypotheses)He wanted science to benefit industry, farming and trade.

GRAB BAG Activity: You and your desk partner will work to add facts to a name or concept. You will have one name. Say a fact to your neighbor, then they will say one to you. Let's see how many you can get. Write it down. You have seven minutes. I will call on you and you will share your facts with the class. Let's see if the class can guess yours.

Religion during the EnlightenmentMany books, including the Bible were easy to buy and this helped people learn how to read.John Wesley, who founded the Methodist Church, taught about Jesus in open fields. He wanted to preach to the poor. Even with all the science going on at the time, people needed spiritual healing and practiced good works.
