Bellingen High School emphasise the importance of mental health by holding

an R U OK Day every term. Our Term 2 R U OK Day involved everyone

receiving a fact sheet to keep and read during RATS. At lunchtime our SMILE

mentors organised a mini cupcake stall - students, in groups of 4, committed to

looking out for each other, and in return received a cupcake with R, U, O or K

on top!

Hi from Home Economics

This term Year 10 Food Technology classes

have been looking at Food Trends in Australia

and around the world. This week the students

made sponge cakes with jam and cream as a

treat for Mother’s Day (however we doubt

many cakes made it home to mum as the

students gobbled them up pretty quick, sorry

Mum!).

Students are now working on their selected

themed recipes and look forward to

presenting their meals in the coming weeks.

CAPA Music Notes Music Composition Workshop

Our senior music students had the wonderful opportunity on Monday of working with Paul Jarman, one of Australia’s most celebrated contemporary composers. Paul gave our students excellent advice for their HSC compositions! Our students left highly motivated and ready to go that ‘extra yard’ on their HSC compositions. He was extremely impressed with the work done by the students and keen to do more with them!

P&C News People to People Exchange 2015

The P&C, in partnership with Bellingen Rotary Club has a great opportunity to raise funds, but we need your help.

On Sunday 12th July until Tuesday 14th July Bellingen will be host to around 50 young people and their leaders from the United States who are here as ambassadors on the People to People program. The youngsters, between 11 and 14 years of age are taking part in the program in order to experience a taste of life in another country and will be in Australia over a two week period travelling along the east coast staying at various venues. One very important part of their trip is to have a homestay in an Australian home to gain a firsthand idea of how ordinary Australians live.

We are therefore looking for around 25 host families who can accommodate and feed two students each (2 girls or boys, or more if you can!) for the two nights 12th and 13th July. Students arrive at about 4pm on the Sunday and leave again at 9am on the Tuesday. The Rotary Club will be organising their day on the Monday (although if you want to do something with the students and your own family, that’s fine). All adults in the household on those two nights must have a Working with Children Check. As it is a volunteer check there is no cost involved, but once the online submission is made individuals need to present at a motor registry with their number and photo ID e.g. drivers licence. This can take up to 2 weeks to process (but is usually much quicker). The website address is:

www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/Working-with-children/working-with-children/check

Please help us if you can – an information sheet is available from the school’s Front Office.

As you know the P&C is in great need of funds and this opportunity will help us a lot.

Zone Final Double Header

The Bellingen High School Open girls and Open boys football teams are both in

the Mid North Coast Zone Final.

The Open boys team earned their position in the final against Orara High School,

defeating them and then in a close tussle with Coffs Harbour Senior College saw

them winners 3-2.

The Open girls have had it somewhat easier defeating Orara High 24-0 and then

a very sound win over Woolgoolga High 6-2. The game against Woolgoolga saw

the Woopi girls come out firing with the wind behind them, putting repeated

pressure on our defensive line. With a few uncharacteristic defensive mistakes

Woolgoolga scored not once, but twice, in the first ten minutes.

However, this is where the girls displayed their class. Great teamwork with

excellent passing saw the girls repeatedly put pressure on the Woolgoolga goal.

At half time the score was 3-2 in our favour. The second half saw three more

unanswered goals with the final score 6-2. The girls will take on Coffs Harbour

High School in their final.

Front Row Kate Jandzio-Fry, Simone Fuller-Byrne, Hannah Watt, Gita Pastro, Jordan Healy, Moala Mackenzie

Girls continue to dominate

Our Bill Turner Trophy team (15 years girls’ football) played their second round

game of the competition against Macksville High. It didn’t take long for the

girls to open the score converting a goal in the second minute of play. The girls

continued to dominate with the full time score of 15-0 after their first round

score of 18-0 against Dorrigo High.

These girls are a strong team that pass the ball well and have many good

finishers. This is displayed in the fact that in both games the goals were shared

between 6 players. Their next game will be against the winner of John Paul

College and Coffs Harbour High.

Back Row Maddi Allen, Hannah Watt, Katie Thorn, Gaia Malcisi, Iona Macdonald, Willow Neal, Kate Jandzio-Fry Middle Row Claudia White, Lauren Rigney, Emily Ruming, Moala Mackenzie,

Riley Neaves is back from representing North Coast

Despite being only 14 years old Riley was selected in

the Northern Stallions AFL team and will now travel

to Sydney to compete in the NSW State Carnival in

Sydney on 2nd-4th June.

Riley is also a member of the Sydney Swans

Academy and it’s great to see all his hard work

Ideally families with same sex children between 7-11 years, who agree to no electronic devices around the children, no processed foods and a respect for the cultural differences and a willingness to enjoy this incredible opportunity. Billeting families need to be able to transport the children to organised events. There are a few other restrictions that can be discussed with interested families.

Tickets for both events need to be purchased online as all their events to date have been sell-outs. Please go to:

http://www.trybooking.com/Booking/BookingEventSummary.aspx?eid=123077 (workshop)

http://www.trybooking.com/Booking/BookingEventSummary.aspx?eid=123007 (concert)

Please contact Di McQueen on 0411 097 275 or [email protected] if you are interested in billeting or for any other enquiries.

The African Children’s Choir is coming to Bellingen during their Under One Sky Australian Tour.

They will be holding a workshop on Saturday 6th June at 1pm and a concert at 7pm. Both events are at Bellingen High School MPC.

The tour fundraises for the wonderful work being done in the slums of Uganda, helping children discover a brighter future and is an awesome opportunity for cultural exchange.

We are also looking for families to billet the children and chaperones and would love to hear from anyone that might be interested. They arrive Wednesday 3rd and depart Monday 8th June. The configurations are either 2 or 3 children and 1 same sex chaperone. The children ideally share a double or queen bed and a separate room is required for the chaperone. Mattresses on the floor are perfectly acceptable.
