DEDICATION The 52nd Annual Bellaire FFA Show and Auction is proudly dedicated to:

Mr. Tim Salem Principal of Bellaire High School

In February of this year, Tim Salem celebrated ten years as the principal of Bellaire High School. Under Mr. Salem’s leadership, the school has enjoyed a decade of excellence and success in all areas, including the Future Farmers of America. Mr. Salem’s career has been spent in education, following in his family’s footsteps.

Tim Salem attended the University of Alabama, where he received a BA degree in American studies and a minor in English, along with a teaching certificate from the state of Alabama in English. Mr. Salem’s father is a professor at the University of Alabama, so he comes from a background in teaching. At first Mr. Salem did not know that he would go into education as a career, but after he began college, he realized that he shared the same love of education as his family. After coming Houston from Alabama, Mr. Salem worked as teacher and administrator in a number of schools in HISD. He taught at Terrell Middle School, then Austin High School. After developing an interest in administration, he obtained a masters degree and a mid-management certificate from the University of Houston. Mr. Salem loves classroom teaching, but he was drawn to projects that involved total school populations, larger numbers than just a classroom, and he was interested in school-wide policies and programs. After working several years as the Assistant Principal at BHS, and as the Acting Principal after Bill Lawson’s retirement, Mr. Salem was selected to be the permanent Principal by HISD Superintendent Kaye Stripling, based on recommendations from parents, the SDMC, and the Southwest HISD District Superintendent, Richard Lawrence. Mr. Salem is a listener. Hand on chin, he thoughtfully considers ideas put before him by visitors to his office. Mr. Salem once told the Houston Chronicle, “I feel like I can relate with many people. I feel like I know when to talk, and I know when to listen.” He said, “I have a real strong sense that this school needs group and mutual input.” Mr. Salem is appreciated and respected by students, parents, faculty and staff alike. His sense of humor, his visibility, and his commitment to the welfare of each individual in a very diverse student population reflects his professionalism and his considerable people skills. Mr. Salem’s level-headed, positive interaction with students and parents has led to a high level of calm and cooperation in the daily operation of the school. He can always be found in the hallways during class changes and interacting with the students during lunch. He attends PTO meetings and is always open to discussions with parents. The faculty recognizes that he supports their hard work, and this support gives the teachers the freedom they need to be the best teachers they can be. He has been a dedicated supporter of CATE programs at Bellaire and has helped keep the FFA program going strong. Tim Salem has been married to Lisa Salem, a teacher at Lovett Elementary School in HISD for 19 years. They have 3 sons, Noah, an 8th grader at Pin Oak Middle School, Brent, a 5th grader at Lovett Elementary, and Benjamin, a kindergarten student at Lovett. For his years of leadership, support, and dedication to the community of Bellaire High School, the Bellaire FFA dedicates this year’s show and auction to Mr. Tim Salem.

FFA MOTTO & CREED The FFA Motto

Learning to Do Doing to Learn

Learning to Live Living to Serve

The FFA Creed

I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words but of deeds-achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturists; in the

promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us from the

struggles of former years.

I believe that to live and work on a good farm, or to be engaged in other agricultural pursuits, is pleasant as

well as challenging; for I know the joys and discomforts of agricultural life and hold an inborn fondness for those

associations which, even in hours of discouragement, I cannot deny.

I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in my own ability to work

efficiently and think clearly, with such knowledge and skill as I can secure, and in the ability of progressive

agriculturists to serve our own and the public interest in producing and marketing the product of our toil.

I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining; in the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so-for others as well as myself; in less need for charity and more of it when

needed; in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends on me.

I believe that American agriculture can and will hold true to the best traditions of our national life and that I

can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in the inspiring task.

The creed was written by E.M. Tiffany, and adopted at the 3rd National Convention of the FFA. It was revised at the 38th Convention and the 63rd Convention.

BUYER INFORMATION

Bidder Registration: If you have not already registered, please do so at the Buyer Table before the sale begins to receive your bidder number that can be used for the animal auction and the silent auction.

Settlement: Payment is required on the day of the sale, unless prior arrangements have been made. We accept cash, MasterCard, Visa and personal or business checks. Please make checks payable to: Bellaire FFA

Disposition of Animals Purchased: You have several choices regarding the animal purchased:

1. You may take the animal with you from the Auction 2. You may donate the animal to the Chapter for resale or donation to

the charity of the Chapter’s choice. 3. You may donate the animal to the charity of your choice; however,

you will need to make arrangements for the removal of the animal the day of the Auction. You may wish to have the animal processed and the processed meat delivered to the recipient.

4. You may have the animal processed for your own consumptions. 5. You may donate the animal back to the student. Processors will be available at the Auction, or you may arrange for pick-up by another processor. To arrange the pick-up of animals after the Auction, please contact the accounting table the day of the Auction.

If you purchase an animal, you don’t have to send it to processing! You can donate the animal back to the student, the chapter or a charity of your choosing. Donating the meat to a food pantry or shelter is a great gift! You do not have to purchase an entire animal; if that isn’t in your budget you can “ADD-ON” to the sale price of an animal. This will increase the total the student receives for their project. Every amount makes a difference! You can team up with friends to buy an animal! Processing your purchase is simple! Processors will be available on-site during the sale. You can have a full freezer in no time! Meat makes a great gift. Give a ham to a customer or a rack of lamb to a friend – they will love you for it!

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

It is hard for us to believe that we have completed another year of FFA. This year started with some exciting changes which brought new enthusiasm and focus to the FFA.

During the summer, we said goodbye to Mr. King who had been our Ag Advisor and teacher for 10 years and said hello to Mark Peak. Mr. Peak comes to us from the successful Katy Ag program. He has been busy all year introducing our members to many new activities and helping us expand our understanding of agriculture.

Mr. Peak worked the officer team hard this year. Those dedicated individuals are:

Vice President - Paris Griffin Secretary - Megan Underwood Treasurer - Austin Gehring Reporter - Arissa Ruiz Sentinel - Kristen Vingoe Historian - Shelby Armstrong Jr. Advisor - Nick Scifers

This year was a year of success as we showed animals and participated in speaking, judging and mechanics competitions across the state. Additionally, we’ll have a significant number of cattle next year as we had 9 successful scramble participants.

We can’t forget how important the parents and alumni are to the enduring success of the program and I would like to give them one more hearty thank you!

Most importantly however is you, the individual that showed up today for your student, neighbor, friend, cousin or grandchild. Whether you came to be supportive or to add-on to an animal project, we thank you for being here. Lastly, without our buyers, the hard work, early, late and long hours of cleaning, walking, feeding, watering and learning would be unrewarded. The folks that come out year after year are the backbone to our program. A sincere and huge thank you, from each and every one of us!

Whether this is your first time or 40th time, we are so very happy to have you here. Please sit back, relax, and bid early, often and high!

Thank you for your support Kelly Fowlkes Chapter President, 2011-2012
