BELLA RAEPHOTOGRAPHER

Bella’s photography is primarily fashion

based, which she has combined with

aspects of Fine Art. She believes this

enables her to manipulate the truth and

allows her to explore the creativity of her

imitation.

In an interview with the photographer about

her final year at Manchester Art School,

Bella talks about how;

‘This portfolio is a collection of shoots

through out my final year which includes

projects on location and the studio, to

interviews with collaborating artists who

have helped this all become possible.

Earlier this year I was lucky enough to have

experienced working for ‘The Gentlewoman’

magazine. Fashion editorials are the

reason behind my love for fashion. These

magazines have inspired my work and

maintained my the focus of fashion in

my work. It felt appropriate to reflect this

passion of fashion magazines, through the

format and presentation of my portfolio.’

CAITI BETTERTONFASHION DESIGNER

[email protected] Betterton is an aspiring fashion designer

studying at the Manchester Art School. She

has developed a collection for her degree

show inspired by the ‘Wings of Hope’

documentary. This is the true story of the

Juniane Koepcke, the sole survivor of a

frightening plane crash, and her account of

the ten days she spent wondering through

the jungle to find help.

Caiti was inspired by this incredible story

of survival, resulting in her designing a

number of garments which reflect the

contrast of the organic richness of the

jungle with the urban world we live in.

Nature verses architecture.

WILDERNESSMODEL: GRACE MACCLOUDLOCATION SHOOT: DISBURY PARK

My concept for this shoot was to produce

a collection of images which have been

inspired by Caiti’s final collection.

The dress was deciding factor in choosing

Disbury Park. I knew this location would

provide fantastic photographic opportunities

with all the overgrown scenery. I knew the

park would compliment, and contrast well

with the exotic print of the dress.

By placing the clothing in a rural

environment, it also reflects Caiti’s concept

of using the organic vegetation of the forest

for the basis and inspiration in her designs.

CONTRAINTMODEL: HELENA ALLENSTUDIO SHOOT: MANCESTER ART SCHOOL

The concept for this shoot was for it to

contrast with the previous outdoor shoot.

This was an indoor shoot which aimed to

represent the architectural constraints of

the contemporary urban world; building on

from Caiti’s clothing design concept.

I achieved this by projecting moving images

of the rainforest using a data projector in

the studio.

The photographs are a demonstration of

the how the illusion of a natural space is

needed in a man made environment, to

mask the limitations nature faces within a

built up, urban area.

MANIPULATEDEMBELLISHMENTMODEL: JESS CUSACK

Having a strong interest in Fine Art as well

as Photography has meant that I never feel

that my photographs are complete.

I like to add a personal touch to my work.

This includes any artistic medium which I

have ever worked in. This can range from

painting, to sketching, and even stitching.

I have a collection of photographs which

I have embellished through adding and

manipulating other art forms, giving

my work a more three dimensional, an

individual edge.

The main section of my portfolio showcases

the collaboration with a third year fashion

design student.

These studio shots have been taken from

the front, back and side to take a closer

look at her degree show collection.

The shoot is simple, using a white

backdrop to emphasise the jungle pattern

within the design. This setting connects

with Caiti’s concept as it is reflects the

contrast between the jungle scenary, and

contempororary urban areas.

Many of the fashion shoots this year took

place in the new Art School. This lead me

to previously undiscovered areas. I came

across many places which I thought were

ideal for shoots such as this one.

It felt was appropriate to use the stone

passages of the Art School to emphasises

the architectural pattern on the models

trousers. The colour of the stone highlights

the design, rather than compromising it.

BEHIND THESCENESMODEL: LILLY ALDRIDGEDOCUMENTRY SHOOTMANCHESTER ART SCHOOL

Working along side the Fashion students

this year has given me the opportunity to

take party in documentary photography

project, looking behind the scenes of an

organised shoot.

My aim for this series of photographs

was for them to be informal, portrait

photography untouched by software.

MESSY ROOMMODEL: BELLA THOMPSONOUTDOOR LOCATION SHOOTWITHINGTON, MANCHESTER

The inspiration of this shoot derived from

Shel Silverstein’s poem, ‘Messy Room’.

My concept was to recreate the room

using objects which Silverstein describes,

and place them in an outside and very

overgrown area to emphasise the chaos of

the messy room.

This project was key for the inspiration and

development of my next project, entitled

‘Pure Imagination’; a range of photographs

illustrating Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes.

This project was an extension onto my

experimentation with different art forms,

and developing ideas from the previous

indoor jungle projection shoot.

This time I wanted to experiment with

abstract, colourful illustrations and project

them onto the model and wall and see what

effect it had.

The projection wraps its self around the

model which gives an illusion to the viewer

that the model is part of the projection.
