President Andrew Jackson

Jackson elected 1828; claimed to stand for the economic well-being of American workers.

However, Jackson was criticized for slave power – to expand and strengthen slavery.

Jackson wanted Indians removed “for their protection” and sent West.

In 1838 Cherokee Indians and other nations were forced to move West from North Carolina to present-day Oklahoma.

Slavery Terms

Abolitionists – Wanted to abolish (end) slavery. Knew slavery was morally wrong.

Plantation – large-scale farm. Many in the South contained slaves.

Underground railroad – secret chain of locations on escape route from the South to Canada.

Harriet Tubman - led more slaves to freedom on U.R. than anyone else.

Crops tended by slaves Upper South – Region did not have long

enough growing season for cotton. Tobacco, corn, hemp were most profitable.

Lower South – Cotton was the cash crop. Planters began growing it in the late 1600s. Sugarcane was also profitable.
