A character trait is NOT the same thing as an emotion. It is a permanent part of the character’s personality.

Formatting a Character Analysis

Topic Sentence: Begin your paragraph with a topic sentence that explains the character traits of your chosen character.

Evidence: Provide textual evidence (a quote) that proves one of the traits. Remember to use a sentence starter and a citation!

Commentary: Your commentary explains how the quote shows the character trait you have assigned to your character. The evidence is not worth much without an explanation.

Transitions: You will need to transition from the commentary to your next piece of evidence. Use transition words.

Conclusion Sentence: Wrap up your paragraph with a summary of your character analysis. This should be different from your topic sentence.

(If you follow this format, your paragraph will be AT LEAST 8 sentences long.)

How do I prepare for my character analysis on the exam?If you are using “The Censors,” make notes in your text of the evidence that you will use.

If you are using your novel, make notes in your text using sticky notes or another method that will help you find quotes easily.

You cannot write the entire analysis ahead of time.

THEM UP! Look for important things like the literary terms listed on your exam. Make notes. You can use your notes on the exam.

Find evidence for your character analysis ahead of time.

Some Final Study TipsDon’t cram! Studies show that you learn more

over time. Schedule out your study time so that you do not wait until the night before a test to study.

Take short breaks in between study time. It is best to do something active (jogging, jumping jacks, walking, etc.) to give your brain a break.

Get plenty of rest. Your brain encodes learned information while you sleep. Therefore, if you do not get enough sleep, you will not remember as much of what you studied.

Eat breakfast on the day of the exam. You do not think as well when you are hungry (trust me). Don’t deprive your brain of nutrients!
