THE TURQUOISE PICNIC TABLE - Over the last year, members of Fairmont Women of Today were asked to chair an event with the theme “Find Joy in the Journey.” One member decided to host a book club, and The Turquoise Table, by Kris-tin Schell, was read and discussed. The book is about a woman who put an ordinary picnic table in her front yard, painted it turquoise, and began inviting friends and neighbors to join her. The Turquoise Table is about finding community and connection in your own front yard, a theme Fair-mont Women of Today has decided to do in their own community! Fairmont Women of Today has made a donation to have a park picnic table re-painted turquoise, and will be hosting “Pop-sicles in the Park – A Turquoise Table Event,” on Thursday, July 30th, from 6-8 p.m., at Bird Park, in Fairmont, to showcase just how a turquoise table can be utilized. The group has also paint-ed another picnic table turquoise, which will be available for an individual in the community to win to use for their own front yard. Applica-tions for this table are available until August 5th, 2020, and can be found at https://fairmontwt.wordpress.com/turquoise-table-application/.

TONY AND JAN STADLER will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on August 1st, 2020, with a renewal of their vows. They celebrated with fam-ily in December on a Caribbean Cruise. Cards will reach them at 5514 Jason Ct., Albertville, MN 55301. (Submitted photo)

Asher James Wal-lace, son of Isaac and Tania Wallace of Fair-mont, was born April 25th, 2020 in Fairmont. He weighed 7 pounds and was 21½ inches long.

Grandparents are Brad and Debbie Wal-lace and Bonnie Taplin of Fairmont, and Jack Taplin of Granada. Ash-er has a brother Eli.

Our little Asher is a miracle. He came early at 38 weeks and had to be air lifted to Roches-ter for surgery on his stomach.

We were told he would be in the NICU for a month but 13 days later he was able to go home.

Thank you for all the support from family, friends and the com-munity on this journey.

Fairmont Hy-Vee recently distributed more than 3,800 free apples during a con-tactless, drive-thru giveaway event.

During the event, apples were loaded directly into customer vehicles to minimize physical contact and maintain social dis-tancing.

The giveaway was made possible thanks to Hy-Vee’s fruit sup-plier, who donated the apples in light of the current coronavi-rus (COVID-19) pan-demic. In total, 380 customers received 10 apples for a dona-

tion equaling approx-imately 1,150 pounds.

“It’s a privilege to partner with our long-time friends at Hy-Vee to share nutritious Stemilt apples with Hy-Vee customers during these unprec-edented times,” said West Mathison, presi-dent for Stemilt.

This contribution is part of a series of do-nations that Hy-Vee and its suppliers are making to local com-munities and food banks across Hy-Vee’s eight-state region during the COVID-19 pandemic.

About the CobraThe ‘Snake’ is a Bell

Cobra-Rotary Wing At-tack Helicopter acquired by the MCVM Committee has been put on perma-nent display at the Martin County Veterans Memo-rial site.

Restoration of The Cobra 327

Martin County’s Vet-eran Memorial Commit-tee restored this Cobra in Fairmont MN., returning it to the likeness of 1971. This detailed restoration work had been in prog-ress since the fall of 2019.

The history of The Snake Cobra Attack

Helicopter 327Martin County’s Vet-

erans Memorial Site will permanently display the actual Bell Cobra-Rotary Wing Attack Helicopter, AH-1-66-F-15327. U.S. Army records show this very helicopter is inter-nationally famous for serving the US Army in both Vietnam and Laos from 1968 to 1971. Even though five states were vying for the acquisition of this Cobra, due to the hard work of Minnesota State and Local Veterans and Volunteers the Cobra was awarded to Martin County.

Many Veterans remem-

ber how the Cobras saved their lives when the en-emy outnumbered them. Our local Veterans have lived the story. In Viet-nam on various dates, Co-bra-327 was hit by enemy fire at least twelve times. Bell’s armor plating saved the flight crew from mor-tal inflictions. Missions included: Armed Escort, Recon Missions & Battle Support.

Martin County’s Vet-erans’ Memorial Site will have a Bell Cobra Rotary Wing Attack Helicopter on display. This helicop-ter was a stalwart of the U.

S. Army’s attack aviation serving in both Vietnam and Laos from 1968-1971, often saving the lives of many American soldiers. There are many Martin County veterans that have experienced helicopter service as well. The follow-ing is the account of the experiences of one Martin County veteran, Neil Lee.

“Several types of heli-copters were used during the Vietnam Conflict-from observation and MEDE-VAC to gunships and dedi-cated attack types. The American Bell UH-1 Huey is the most famous of the

Former Fairmonter Steve Chase was an instru-mental part of obtaining The Bell Cobra-Fixed Wing Attack Helicopter that served the U.S. Army in Vietnam and Laos from 1968 to 1971. The U.S. Army helicopter was acquired a year ago from California.

One Veteran’s Story – Neil Lee

Vietnam helicopter types and proved a workhorse for air cavalry units through-out the war. The attack he-licopter - embodied by the Huey Cobra, was also used for the first time in warfare.” Former Martin County res-ident, Neil Lee, piloted a UH-1 Huey during his tour of duty in Vietnam.

Neil Lee was commis-sioned a 2nd Lieutenant through ROTC at South Dakota State University. He entered the Army in March of 1968. His initial training took place at Fort Eustis, Virginia. Follow-ing that, he completed the

first half of flight school at Fort Wolters, Texas, and the second half at Fort Rucker, Alabama. He graduated in February of 1969 as a UH-1 Huey pilot.

He then went back to Fort Eustis to the Aircraft Main-tenance Officers Course (AMOC), and returned to Fort Rucker to transition into the CH47-Chinook. He completed that course and went to Viet Nam in August 1969. During his tour of duty in Vietnam he served in A Company 228th As-sault Support Helicopter Bn (ASHB) in the 1st Cavalry Division.

Lee explained their mis-sion was primarily resup-plying the forward LZ’s with mostly sling loads, ammo, food, water and whatever else they needed. During that time, eight-hour flight time days were not uncom-mon.

Lt. Lee was awarded two Bronze Stars, an Army Commendation Medal, several Air Medals includ-ing one with a “V” device for Valor.

He stated that his fa-vorite memory of Viet Nam was the men he met that flew with him. He de-scribes those individuals as being the most amaz-ing pilots he ever met and is proud to have known them. Following his tour of duty in Viet Nam, in August of 1970 he was sent to Ger-many for three years. He was honorably discharged from active duty in Sep-tember of 1973.

He eventually moved to Fairmont where he was employed as manager of the Insurance Agency at the Martin County Nation-al Bank, later to be known as Profinium. In addition, he also performed some

other duties for the bank. During that time, he served in the National Guard for 19 years, the last 10 of which were in the Fair-mont unit. By then, he had stopped flying and entered the unit as a Sergeant, the last three years of which he was the First Sergeant.

Upon retiring from the bank and insurance agency, in 2006 he and his wife, Nancy, moved to Volga, South Dakota, to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

The Bell Rotary Wing Attack Helicopter will be dedicated on August 1, 2020, at the Martin County Veterans’ Memorial Site on Winnebago Avenue in Fairmont. Watch the local media for exact time of the event and other activities planned for that day.

Guest Columnist

The year was 1967. Bruce Moore had

just graduated from Mankato State University with big plans of what he would do with his life now that he had his degree. But the Vietnam war was raging and by 1968, the 23-year-old Moore was drafted into the United States Army. Following ba-sic training at Fort Camp-bell, Kentucky, Advanced Infantry Training (AIT) at Fort Polk, Louisiana and additional training at Fort Benning, Georgia, Moore was shipped to Southeast Asia in April, 1969, to fight in Vietnam.

Moore quickly worked his way up the combat ranks, becoming a squad leader for a seven-to-eight-man infantry rifle platoon to later becoming a pla-toon Sergeant in a 24-man reconnaissance platoon as part of the 11th Light In-

fantry Brigade AMERICAL Division.

He and his men were encamped at forward fire-bases at Chu Lia and near Duc Pho. “The responsibil-ity of being a squad leader or platoon Sergeant caused me a lot of anxiety,” Moore recalled, “even though you couldn’t control what hap-pened, it still felt that way. It was real tough seeing friends wounded or killed.”

Bruce Moore Born in 1945 in Topeka, Kansas Grew up in Fairmont, MN U.S. Army Vietnam War Veteran Purple Heart Recipient

Moore himself was wound-ed in action in Vietnam, but doesn’t openly share the story behind his war in-jury that resulted in receiv-ing a Purple Heart medal. “I don’t regret being in the service, but I wouldn’t want to do it again,” he admitted.

Moore was brought home from Vietnam and honorably discharged from the Army in 1970. Once back in Minnesota, he worked for a concrete construction business be-fore being hired on at 3M in Fairmont. He retired from 3M after 33 years with the company, serving in man-agement and engineering positions.

NaturallyBy Al Batt

There’s more beauty in my ZIP code than

I could see or hear in two lifetimes. Sweet sounds of goldfinches greeted me. What is yellow, weighs 4,000 pounds and sings? A two-ton American gold-finch.

The catbirds fed on suet more than I’d seen before. Smithsonian scientists reported 79% of fledged catbirds in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., were killed by predators be-fore reaching adulthood, with 49% dispatched by domestic cats. Maybe the suet feeder is a “catbird seat,” a reference to a posi-tion of great prominence

or advantage. Legend-ary baseball announcer Red Barber used the ex-pression “sitting in the catbird seat,” meaning a baseball player was sitting pretty, like a batter with a count of three balls and no strikes. It’s believed the expression originated from a 1942 short story by James Thurber, “The Cat-bird Seat.”

I was filling bird feed-ers when I frightened a chipmunk from a hang-ing feeder. It jumped from the feeder into the bird-bath. I’m sure that wasn’t intentional. He splashed down, jumped from the water and scurried off after a dive that would have made Greg Louganis proud.

A blue jay grabbed a peanut shell holding two peanuts and swallowed. It snatched another hull covering two goobers in its bill and flew away. A jay can transport food in its throat and upper esopha-gus — an area called a gu-lar pouch.

Canada geese are flying again. About five weeks after Canada geese hatch, the adults molt, which renders them flightless until the goslings can fly

at 9 to 10 weeks of age. At that time, they all are able to fly. That’s typically dur-ing the second half of July.

I found a few dogbane leaf beetles. As I moved slightly, their iridescent colors shifted from blue to green to red to orange. Quiet fireworks. The bee-tles feed on the poisonous sap of milkweed and dog-bane.

I tossed a small pizza crust on the lawn to see what would become of it. A crow found it quick-ly. Later, while mowing the lawn, I found a crow feather in the spot where the pizza had been. A co-incidence or a quid pro crow?

Cicadas called. They declared it to be sum-mer. I watched a great horned owl land twice in the yard not long before dusk. I didn’t see it catch anything, It might have attempted to find relief from being mobbed by jays, robins, chickadees, nuthatches, catbirds, woodpeckers and grack-les. Mobbing is a loud ex-pression of outrage and a behavior birds engage in to defend themselves or their offspring from predators. The smaller

birds worked together like an indignant commit-tee to annoy the owl from the yard. The night would prove generous with its stars.

Q&A“Does Minnesota have

a state bee?” The rusty patched bumblebee be-came Minnesota’s state bee in 2019. This fuzzy bumblebee can be iden-tified by a rust-colored patch on its abdomen. All rusty patched bumble-bees have entirely black heads, but only workers and males have a rusty reddish patch centrally located on the back. It’s found in grasslands and prairies in Minnesota. The rusty patched bumblebee was once widespread in the eastern U.S., but is now found in just a frac-tion of its former range. Since 2017, it has been listed as an endangered species under the U.S. En-dangered Species Act. Its designation as state bee is intended to raise aware-ness about the role of pol-linators in Minnesota’s ecosystems and the im-portance of conservation of their habitats.

“Do deer really eat birds?” Yes, they will eat

eggs and baby birds as trail cams and eyewitness reports have seen.

“What’s the difference between a fruit and a veg-etable?” Botanists define a fruit as the portion of a flowering plant that de-velops from the ovary. It contains the seeds, pro-tecting them and facilitat-ing dispersal. The fuzzy definition of a vegetable is any edible part of a plant that isn’t a fruit. Scien-tifically, because corn is a structure to bear seeds, it’s a fruit.

“What is the smallest bird in North America?” The Calliope humming-bird.

Karen Wright of Mankato asks if daddy longlegs are able to spin a web. I hear the name daddy longlegs used most often to refer to harvest-men, which are ground-dwelling outdoor crea-tures. Harvestmen are arachnids, but they aren’t spiders. Some people refer to cellar spiders or crane flies as daddy long-legs. Harvestmen cannot produce silk, therefore cannot make webs.

“Did storks ever de-liver babies?” They did until they were required

to provide child restraint systems.

“What is a dunkadoo?” It’s a nickname for the American bittern.

Thanks for stopping by“The whole problem

with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts.” — Bertrand Rus-sell
