ABOUT THE CREATOR/DIRECTOR/CHOREOGRAPHER

John Jasperse has been Artistic Director/Choreographer of John Jasperse Company New York, NY, since 1985. His work has been presented by festivals and presenting organizations in the United States, Brazil, Chile, Israel, Japan, and throughout Europe including The American Dance Festival, The Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival, La Biennale di Venezia, Cannes International Dance Festival, Dance Umbrella, EuroKaz, Kampnagel, Montpellier Danse, Tanz im August, TanzQuartier Wein, Künstlerhaus Mousonturm, and the VEO Festival. He and his company have received numerous prizes, grants and fellowships, including American Music Center Live Music for Dance, Creative Capital, Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts, The MAP Fund, Meet The Composer’s Commissioning Music/USA, New England Foundation for the Art’s National Dance Project, The New York State Music Fund, National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, Lambent Fellowship in the Arts, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and a New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” Award for the recognition of his body of work. Jasperse recently received a new works commission from the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s 25th Anniversary Next Wave Festival for which he created a new work Misuse liable to prosecution. Jasperse is currently developing a new work, which is a 25th Anniversary Commission of the Joyce Theater, NYC, and a co-production of The Forsythe Company, Dresden, Germany, where it will premiere in September 2009. Mr. Jasperse has also created commissioned works for Baryshnikov’s White Oak Project, Batsheva Dance Company, and The Lyon Opera Ballet.

PERFORMER BIOS

HILARY BRYAN was last seen on this stage as an evil queen and is now an award-winning choreographer, Certified Movement Analyst, and filmmaker with an international touring career. Hilary grew up in Europe, China, and a Midwestern college town. Upon earning her MFA at UC Davis in 2007, she took a year off to live in a tree in Texas and work as guest artist at Sam Houston State University; she is now back at UCD thundering through a PhD in Making Sense. When not washing her tights, she teaches Fairy Tales and Fantasy in the Department of Comparative Literature.

JENNA CHEN is lucky to be here at UC Davis. After losing two toes in a horrific car accident last year, her dancing career was put on hold. She makes her debut here at the university and on the Main Theatre stage in Beyond Belief. Jenna is a sixth year triple major in Fashion Design, Dance, and Biomedical Engineering. Jenna has also made it to the Olympic Trials four times in women’s table tennis. She speaks five languages and likes to beat box in her spare time. She hopes one day she will find a cure for cancer.

DEVIN COLLINS is a fifth year freshman at UC Davis. She is a Dramatic Arts/Dance major hoping to graduate and become a pastry chef specializing in cake décor working with Duff at Ace of Cakes. Along those lines she is also touring as Guy Fieri’s assistant in hopes of finding that “perfect texture with a nice crunch!” Within the dance world, she has been in many music videos from “POP” by *NSYNC to “All the Single Ladies” and “Circus.” She is very excited to explore a new style of dance by working with John Jasperse and looks forward to the next step wherever her life may take her.

TYLER EASH is a third year Landscape Architecture and Dramatic Arts (Dance focus) double major at UC Davis. He graduated from Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts where his emphasis was visual arts. Tyler discovered dance his first year at UC Davis and has been pursuing it ever since. He has choreographed two works and is currently working on his third. Tyler received a tuition

scholarship to attend the American Dance Festival last summer and has high hopes for a future in the dance world.

HILLARY FEINEMAN-KLAUSNER is a fourth year Psychology and Dramatic Arts (Dance) double major. She started dancing ballet, tap, and jazz at a young age. However, it was not until she attended UC Davis that she discovered modern dance. Hillary is interested in both performing and choreographing dance. Currently, she is working on a choreography piece for spring quarter’s Main Stage Dance/Theatre Festival. After graduation, Hillary plans to attend graduate school and pursue a Master’s degree in Psychology. She hopes to combine her two passions and become a dance therapist.

HOPE MIRLIS is a proud New Yorker who spent the last 16 years touring with the National Circus of Cuba as a dog trainer and tightrope walker. Past projects at UC Davis include April Lansky in Rinde Eckert’s Fate & Spinoza, Elizabeth in Nest by Bathsheba Doran, and performing with the neo-Americana band, Miss Lonely Hearts, for the Valentine’s Day Sonnet Walk. Hope is a second year Acting MFA but finds time to teach Animal Behavior classes for the Experimental College and Fundamentals of Movement and Hip Hop for the Department of Theatre & Dance.

ANNE REEDER is a first year MFA Acting candidate at UC Davis. She grew up in the slums of South Central Pennsylvania and found dance as an outlet to release her pain. After surviving a horrific farming accident, believing she’d never dance again, she moved to Los Angeles to be a nanny. Some credits include: When Men Are Scarce (Lee Strasberg Theater), Brotherhood (Showtime), The Bold and the Beautiful (CBS), and The Art of Being Straight (Great Graffiti Films). Anne is thankful to all the people it would be appropriate to thank.

CHRISTINE SAMSON has lived and worked in the Sacramento area for fifteen years. Originally from British Columbia, Christine studied acting at Studio 58 and dance at Simon Fraser University before moving south and completing her undergraduate degree at CSUS. She has acted in local plays

and independent films and her growing focus on theatre education led to the past three years spent heading the theatre program for the School of the Arts at Sacramento High School. In 2007 Christine was a member of the Mondavi Center’s first Globe Education Academy, and she is currently working with the ArtsBridge scholarship program to develop active approaches to Shakespeare for K-12 students. As an ArtsBridge mentor, Christine develops curriculum and leads educator workshops;additionally, she is continuing to research and develop best practices for non-boring introductions to Shakespeare. Upon completing her MFA, Christine plans to continue specializing in theatre education, but right now she is delighted to have this time to explore, grow as an artist, and enjoy being part of the John Jasperse ensemble.

HEATHER SHAPIRO is excited to be performing in John Jasperse’s new show. Growing up, Heather studied belly-dancing in her home state of New Jersey. She then studied dance and neuroscience as an undergraduate student at Hamilton College in upstate New York. After college, Heather pursued dance in Iceland, but ultimately returned to the States in search of warmer weather. Heather moved to California and is currently a graduate student in neuroscience here at UC Davis. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to dance and perform with the UC Davis Department of Theatre & Dance. She would like to thank her cat Ginger for all of her support.

CONCEPT ARTIST BIOSEVELYN DEFELICE (Stage Manager) is thrilled to stage manage her first production here at UC Davis. Her other university credits include assistant stage manager for Nest and running crew for Noises Off. She also stage managed Fiddler on the Roof and The Music Man for Summerville High School. She would like to thank her family and friends for all their loving support.

LYNNE ROSE GIOVANNETTI (Costume Designer) is finishing her second year as an MFA Costume Designer at UC Davis where she designed costumes for Noises Off and Nights at the Circus last year. She has been a costume designer in the Sacramento area for the past 16 years.

JAMIE KUMPF (Scenic Designer) is a first year graduate student at UC Davis. She previously designed The Angry Red Drum at UC Davis. Her other scenic design credits include The Emperor’s New Clothes at B-Street Theater and The Trial of One Short Sighted Woman vs. Mammy Louise and Safreeta Mae for the San Jose Multicultural Artists Guild. She has also acted as the scenic charge artist for the last three years at the Sacramento Music Circus.

TONY SHAYNE (Lighting Designer) served this past summer as the lighting intern at the San Francisco Opera while working on his MFA in Lighting / Scenic Design from UC Davis Department of Theatre & Dance. His design credits include UC Davis lighting: dance, Reparté (‘08) and ShadowLight (‘08); plays, #5 The Angry Red Drum (‘08) and Noises Off (‘07). He received his BFA at the University of Southern California with the following credits: lighting for: dance, Once Upon a Plíe (‘06) and 125 Years of Dance (‘05); plays, The Swan (‘06), Trojan Women (‘05); as well as scenery for: A Mother (‘06) and The Imaginary Invalid (‘05). His post graduate designs include Paheliyan: The Story of Alice, a Bollywood dance adaptation of Alice in Wonderland and a fundraiser event, and Cirquewood (‘07) involving Cirque Du Soleil aerialists and contortionists. Film and television: animation lighting, Family Guy (Fox, ‘06) and Holidaze (ABC, ‘06).
