LAUNCHING OF DOCOMOMO BELGIUMLECTURES BY HUBERT-JAN HENKET (NL), JOHN ALLAN (GB) & JEAN-LOUIS COHEN (FR)

The Belgian committee of DOCOMOMO (DOcumentation and COnservation of buildings, sites and neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement) will introduce itself to the gen-eral public with international guest speakers on the 15th of March and the 16th of April.

Hubert-Jan Henket, co-founder and honorary president of DOCOMOMO International will speak about DOCOMOMO and its importance as international network and collaboration platform on Thursday, March 15th. The Dutch architect Henket was actively engaged in the architectural education at the Barlett School London, TU Eindhoven and TU Delft for years. He was pro-moter of int.al. the doctor honoris cuasa for Sir Norman Foster. Next to his activities for DOCOMOMO, he is also chairman of the Rietveld-Schröderhuis-foundation Utrecht, of the Rietveld archive and of the foundation ‘Van Doesburghuis’ Meudon (France). In 2010 he won the World Monument Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize for the restoration of the Sanatorium Zonnestraal Hilversum (The Netherlands).

After the lecture by Henket, the British architect John Allan (Avan-ti Architects) gives a disquisition about the conservation problems of modern heritage, using different examples closely allied to its applications. Allan won several prestigious prices for the restora-

tion and extension of modern masterpieces including the RIBA Conservation Award in 2005 for the restoration of the Isokon apartment building London. The restoration of the famous iconic Penguin Pool at the London Zoo belongs as well to his oeuvre. For this Penguin Pool, Allan invented together with the original de-signer Lubetkin, ingenious solutions for the very fragile reinforced concrete structure. The Penguin Pool, with his spiral ramps is now one of the monumental masterpieces of the U.K..

The French architect and historian Jean-Louis Cohen will dis-cuss the documentary of the modern movement on Monday, April 16th. Cohen will guide us through his years of research in archi-tecture and urban planning during the 20th century and will ex-plain this according to a broader political and social context. Co-hen is Professor at the prominent Columbia University New York and has distinguished international and academic respect for his architectural-historical reflection. Cohen is especially known for his publications on the life and work of Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier. He also is regularly curator of several exhibitions in international renowned art institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) New York and the Centre Pompidou Paris.
