Background 1996 – Launched by Nasjonalt læremiddelsenter as part of the

Governmental action plan “IT I norsk utdanning, plan for 1996-1999” Launched as a static page

1997 – Participant in the launch of the European Schoolnet. Interactive services such as discussion groups, bulletin boards where

added to Skolenettets services.

1998 – Major services, like e-mail (“skolepost”) added.

2000 – Relaunched as a part of the new action plan “IKT i norsk utdanning 2000-2003).

Status rapport More than 40 different services have been launched since

1996.

User groups have their own startup pages with access to user specific services.

The use of Skolenettet has been incorporated into school

curricula and teachers learning programs.

Services available in Norwegian, New-Norwegian, Sámi, Finnish, German, English and French.

Usage statistics On average 3300 different user per day.

More than 230 000 page views per day.

71.7 % of the users use the general startup page. Groups pages have similar design and appearance. Confuses users because of similarity.

Skolenettet is mostly used after normal school hours. Children and students prefer to use other computer tools. Teachers are the main users!

Information Infrastructure

Mixed Information storage architectures.

Information is stored hierarchal, often combined with sequential or a network structure.

Many standards have been in use, or are in use now.

It is challenging to get the overall sense of the Information Infrastructure.

Physical and technical platform

Hardware: Runs on 7 Linux based servers with different dedicated tasks. Connected to the Internet as a globally available web portal. Follows www-standards.

Software: The non-standardized program iMaker is used for publishing

information. Follows www-standards.

Today 25 external web based services are based on and physically connected to Skolenettet’s technical platform.

Metadata

All information is marked with Metadata Mainly based on the Dublin core Standard Additional metadata stored in accordance with

standards developed by the European Schoolnet.

Metadata is used by Skolenettet’s search engines to find the right information and services to the different users.

Information presentation Little metadata is presented to the users.

Information is presented to the users thru an Internet Browser Interface.

Skolenettet is using the latest HTML standards

Why Skolenettet is an IIpart 1

Installed base: Current 2

generation was built upon the old static web application.

Standardized: It’s built upon the Dublin Core and European Schoolnet

metadata standards. Runs on the same platform as 25 connected school network.

Heterogeneous: It consists of different technologies and user groups that are

aligned.

Shared: It’s is shared by a large educational community, consisting of different

user groups both nationally and internationally.

Open: There are no limits on the number of users. Anyone who want to

access the network, can do so. Some services requires users to log in.

Enabling: Metadata and the documents storage structure makes the specter of

services easily available for the users. This way more users will find the tools they demand and take advantage of using them.

Socio-technical: It is an educational and Internet enabled portal.
