BCG Community Gardeners’ Rules

Gardeners must maintain their plots once the garden is open, even if they will not be planted until a later date.

Gardeners are encouraged to use hay, straw, leaves or plastic as a mulch to prevent weed growth and conserve moisture. Plots that become overgrown and remain unplanted into mid-June will be reassigned. If you are unable to continue to maintain your plot, please contact Bruce Klockars (253-9723) or David Reed (323-4531) so the plot may be reassigned.

Gardeners may not use chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. If in doubt, please check in with the NESFI office.

Gardeners may use the community tools. Please make sure to return them to the shed; don’t keep them in your plot when not in use.

Water for irrigation is provided, but it is not free. The cost is included in your registration fee. Please make sure the water is turned off when you have finished using it, return cans and buckets to the watering station, and refill the rain barrels. Water is a precious resource which we must buy from the town. It should not be wasted!

Plant tall crops where they will not shade neighboring plots.

Keep crops from encroaching on neighboring plots and weed adjacent walkways. Good boundaries make good neighbors!

Clean up after pets and keep them leashed or tied away from garden plots. Pets may not be left unsupervised.

Help children respect neighboring plots and the fragility of seedlings. For safety, children must not be allowed to wander around the farm and buildings unsupervised, as there are many hazards on site, including traffic and heavy machinery.

NESFI kindly allows (and requires) community gardeners to use bathroom facilities located in First Barn. Please help keep them clean.
