Be a healthy weightBeing overweight or obese and carrying a lot of weight around your waist can increase your risk of bowel cancer. Measuring your BMI (Body Mass Index) is a simple way of finding out if you’re a healthy weight for your height. Your practice nurse, GP or dietitian can help you or you can check your BMI on the NHS website nhs.uk.

Take action if you start to gain weight

So, as well as being physically active, here are a few tips to reduce your cal-orie intake if you need to lose weight.

Be aware of portion sizes and don’t overload your plate. If you are still hungry, have some fruit after your meal.

Be wary of ‘large’ or ‘value-sized’ offers. They often give you more food than you need, leading to weight gain.

Replace fruit juices and fizzy drinks with water and herbal teas.

Alcohol is high in calories so limit the amount you drink.

Snack on fruit and vegetables instead of biscuits and crisps.

Preventable. Treatable. Curable.Bowel cancer is the UK’s second biggest cancer killer. However it shouldn’t be because it is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early.

At Bowel Cancer UK, we’re determined to save lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer.

We fund targeted research, provide expert information and support to patients and their families, educate the public and professionals about the disease and campaign for early diagnosis and access to best treatment and care.

That’s why you are so important – your support will help stop people dying of bowel cancer by funding vital services and lifesaving research.

Our vision is a future where nobody dies of bowel cancer but we can’t achieve this alone. Join us.

We’re hugely grateful for all of the amazing people, like you, who fundraise for us every year. Your support truly makes a difference so a massive thank you for all that you are doing. Your stories, challenges, determination and bravery never ceases to inspire us. Together we can make positive change; together we will stop people dying of bowel cancer.

This is a charity that will always be very close to my heart. The work that they do is phenomenal, from research towards prevention and cure to finding more effective ways of treating this awful disease, so if throwing myself out of a plane to raise funds can help, then that’s what I’ll do!

Getting started

Our number one tip is to set up an online sponsorship page as soon as possible by visiting justgiving.com/bowelcanceruk or virginmoneygiving.com/charities/bowelcanceruk. It only takes a few minutes to set up your page.

Be sure to personalise your page with lots of photos and content, and make sure you tell everyone why you’re supporting us.

Once your page is good to go, spread the word on social media and email your web link to friends, family and colleagues. If it’s OK with your employer, add the link to your email signature at work.

Money raised on your donation page automatically transfers to us and updates your personal fundraising total. There’s nothing more you need to do.

Not online? You’ll find a couple of sponsor forms in your welcome pack just in case you prefer the more traditional fundraising methods.

Please make sure people fill out the form with their details, including ticking the Gift Aid box if applicable.

Try to collect the cash and send it in as soon as you can so you’re not chasing people for sponsorship after the event. There’s more information about the different ways you can pay in on page 15.

All you need to do is:

Host a coffee morning or bake sale and sell tasty baked treats to colleagues, neighbours or friends and family.

Ask for donations instead of presents at big occasions such as birthdays and weddings.

Whether you love football, horse racing or reality TV, put some money on a workplace sweepstake.

Spend a Saturday packing bags in your local supermarket. Bring a collection bucket and help spread the word about our work.

Organise a competitive dining experience between you and your friends. You can raise funds through charging an entry fee, with a prize going to the master chef.

Get rid of any unwanted goods at your local car boot and raise funds.

Organise a dress down day at work or school and ask for donations of £1 or £2 to take part.

Teresa’s story

We decided to hold a bake sale because my daughter Lana loves baking and her daddy is currently undergoing treatment for bowel cancer. Lana made all the cakes and we put up posters and had a Facebook page inviting our friends and family. It is an easy and fun way to raise awareness and donations and we will certainly be doing it again next year.

If your company has a charity partnership scheme, this is a great opportunity to unite your colleagues behind a worthwhile cause that they can identify with and feel passionate about. You can get everyone involved to help you achieve your target.

Whether you love golf or know someone who does, golf days have amazing fundraising potential. On course competitions will bring out everyone’s competitive side and you could charge an entry fee to participants.

Host your own charity ball for a night of glitz and glamour! Auctions go down a treat and you can ask friends, family or local businesses to donate prizes.

Everyone loves a pub quiz and with an entry fee they can be great money makers! You could also host a raffle at your quiz to boost your total.

If you have a hidden talent or you know someone who does, why not organise a gig or concert to raise money? Advance ticket sales means guaranteed donations so make sure you let as many people as possible know about your event.

Clare’s story

Clare decided to take on 45 challenges in her 45th year in memory of her best friend Liz. She raised over £15,000 and organised a ball as part of her fundraising.

“Try and bring a personal element into it. My ball was in memory of my best friend and I think people could understand that devastation at losing someone so close and wanting to turn it into something positive. We also had a PowerPoint presentation to explain about the charity and what we were fundraising for.

Speak to everyone you know. Spread the word, get the date out and keep asking anyone you know if they would like a table. I even had a friend in Australia who couldn’t make it but sent a table of her friends instead!

Don’t overdo the number of prizes in your live auction. Pick your top prizes and auction those, and do the rest as a sealed bid silent auction.

Don’t go it alone! Get a good group of friends together to be on your committee and try and get a spread of people from different friendship groups to widen ticket sales.

Keep your ticket prices low. We raised £9,000 but most of that was from auction prizes and other games that we played on the night.”

Here are some of her top tips for a successful event…

Keeping it safe and legal

To help your event go as smoothly as possible, it’s important that you ensure that any activity you run to fundraise in aid of us is legal and safe for you and the public taking part. Below you’ll find some simple tips but please get in touch with the Fundraising Team if you need any more information.

Our brandingBy law, our charity registration no. 1071038 (England & Wales) and SC040914 (Scotland) must appear on all printed materials that you use. If you’d like to use our logo for any of your own printed materials, please contact the Fundraising Team.

Raffles and LotteriesSmall raffles held as part of a larger event are acceptable as long as ticket sales and the announcing of results take place during the event and there are no cash prizes. Raffles on their own have complex regulations, so please get in touch if you would like to hold a raffle.

LicencesTo collect in any public place you will need a collector’s license from your local authority. You will also need permission for any of the following activities: sale of alcohol, extended hours, provision of food and drink, collecting money or selling goods in a public place.

11

Safety at your eventWe recommend that you carry out a risk assessment to make sure your event is as safe as possible. Make sure you’ve considered things like first aid, the likelihood of accidents and how you’ll keep any money raised safe and secure.

Food hygieneWhen selling food at your event, remember to store it appropriately and keep children and animals out of the preparation areas. Always provide appropriate clothing (for example plastic gloves or aprons) and don’t forget to label all food that contains potential allergens.

InsurancePlease remember that you are responsible for any fundraising activity that you hold and we cannot accept liability for any fundraising activity or event you undertake. If you’re planning an event that involves the general public you’ll need to budget for public liability insurance, which can be obtained by any insurer. If you’re holding the event at a venue which has liability insurance (such as a pub or village hall) check they have the appropriate insurance and that it covers your activity.

Please get in touch with the Fundraising Team if you need any more information.

Spread the word

If you’re new to Instagram, remember that one of the best ways to increase your reach is to use hashtags. Unlike Twitter, the more hashtags used on Instagram the better. Read all about it!Reach further afield than just your immediate friends and family to make a bigger impact. If you think your fundraising makes a good story, send a press release and some good photographs to your local newspapers and radio stations. If you’re featured, not only will you encourage donations for your challenge, but you’ll be creating greater awareness of bowel cancer and the charity.

If you would like to use a template press release or would like support to generate publicity for your fundraising activity, please get in touch with our press team at [email protected]

Start a blogWriting a blog is a great way to keep track of your progress while showing people the effort you’re putting in to stop people dying from bowel cancer. Blogger, Wordpress and Tumblr are all free and easy to use. Each time you post a new blog you can share it on your social media channels, so people are reminded about what you’re doing and given new incentives to donate.

Read our fundraising blog at bowelcanceruk.org.uk, that’s full of stories from the wonderful supporters who make our vital work possible.

Always let people know how grateful you are for their support and remember to keep them updated on how your fundraising goes.

14

Maximise your fundraising

Gift Aid is great as it means we can claim 25p on every £1 donation at no extra cost to you or your supporters. Online pages enable your supporters to automatically Gift Aid their donation or people can simply tick the Gift Aid box on your paper sponsorship form.

Many companies have matched giving schemes for employees who are fundraising for charity so it’s worth asking your employer if they’d be interested. If not, ask if you can email your colleagues about your event or post something on your staff intranet.

We find that when fundraisers take time to explain our lifesaving work to their peers, they are a lot more generous! Send your supporters links to our website, Facebook or Twitter pages alongside your online fundraising page. Your enthusiasm and passion for the cause will be infectious.
