Being a Communicator at Hacettepe

• Founded in 2005, our faculty provides education for masters and doctorate degrees as well as opening a variety of compulsive and elective courses for the undergraduates within the scope of Hacettepe University.

• Having a qualified academic staff, our faculty makes significant contributions to the field of communication and offers new horizons to the students from other disciplines.

• Our faculty embraces a culture-centered perspective as it aims to develop the students’ relations with the society they live in, as well as providing vocational education.

• The academic staff of our faculty rest upon a tradition which approach the dominant perspectives and contemporary discussions in the social sciences with recourse to its ties to the communication sciences.

• This tradition, which is highly prevalent in both the academic staff’s personal studies and in the courses we provide, hold an interdisciplinary qualification.

• Such an approach comes into view in the qualitative substantiality of both undergraduate and graduate courses we provide.

GRADUATE PROGRAMMES

1. Graduate Programme of Communication Sciences

The courses of the program are prepared in order to focus on the discussion of the contemporary communication issues at graduate level in accordance with the graduate programs of the European and international universities.

The programme has been organized in a self-renewing way to be attuned to the social and technological changes.

The courses in the programme provide theoretical background that will be needed by the students during the thesis period along with the aim of ensuring that the students will have the knowledge to discuss current issues and to offer solutions for them.

2. Graduate Programme of Cultural Studies and Media

The programme is designed with a view to the academic interests and technical proficiencies of the academic personnel in the Faculty of Communications, at Hacettepe University. It reflects the the interdisciplinary nature and methodological broad range of the field.

The courses included in the programme are envisaged with the aim to provide the students with specific knowledge of the field. They are also considered so as to contribute to the related literature by means of their distinctive submissions to analyze social, socio-cultural and political tensions that appears due to interactions between individuals, media and society and to develop policy-making processes at global, national and local levels.

3. Postgraduate Programme of Communication Sciences

Just as the graduate programme of Communication Sciences, communication is regarded as an interdisciplinary field and the courses of the program include contemporary and advanced theoretical and methodological approaches.

Critical and creative thinking is the basis of the programme and the aim is to promote specific research and study contributions to the communication field.

Undergraduate Education

Our faculty provides courses for the students of other faculties and colleges by leaning on its own definition of communication and the tradition it embraces.

Undergraduate courses of communication are opened for various faculties and colleges within the body of Hacettepe University including Medical Faculty, Faculty of Dentistry and Healt College in each term.

These courses bring communication science together with the other science fields and contributes to the students’ professional and personal developments.

Units of Communication Practice

• Our faculty is a significant constituent of the university with its units of practice alongside the academic and theoretical education it provides.

• The units of practice are open to both the graduate students of Communication Sciences in our faculty and students from other faculties and colleges within the body of Hacettepe University. The units of practice produce studies which resound on national and international scales.

• Our university is being represented in different platforms with the documentaries and introduction films and its visibility is being enhanced internationally with the help of workshops conducted by these units.

Unit of Digital Storytelling

• It is the first and unique institutional digital storytelling center.

• More than fifty workshops has been conducted with national and international collaboration projects since 2009.

• Relying on the techonogical developments, the unit generates a collective production process in the field of personal and social memory. The workshops that are conducted in collaboration with national and international partners, are open to both faculty students and the students from various faculties.

• For attendance, the students can fill in the application form in the official website of the faculty. They can contribute to a collective, equitable and democratic process and be a part of activities that touch upon various social issues such as migration, gender equality, daily life and experiences. Process of Digital Story Production

In the digital storytelling workshops, the attendants create personal auto-biographical naratives of 2,5-3 minutes by making use of multi-media practices in guidance of facilitators. By this way, personal narratives are being recorded and archived and a contribution to the forming of social conciousness and memory in various subjects is being made. In this respect, digital storytelling unit conducts collaborative studies with various domestic and international institutions, foundations and non-governmental organizations. At the end of these studies, numerous workshops, exhibitions and conferences has been organized uptillnow.

Unit of Photography

• It is a unit of practice from which the students of our faculty benefit. There is a digital photography unit and a studio within the body of the unit.

• The unit provides applied photography education for the students and they can make use of each facility of the unit for their projects.

• Some workshops such as photo-interview and studio-lightning and so on are conducted for people working or studying within the body of our university, in collaboration with other faculties and departments.

• There has been a workshop organization for the Faculty of Dentistry named “Clinical Photography” and another one for the purpose of rehabilitation of paraplegic patients with the in the Department of Physical Rehabilitation in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

• The unit regularly produces visuals within the scope of Saint Nikola Museum excavation and restoration project and Hagia Sophia Iconos Restoration project in collaboration with the Department of History of Art.


Unit of Photography

Various workshops concerning the promotion of Hacettepe University are being conducted within the Unit of Photography by attendance of students. In this respect, Hacettepe University Virtual Tour Project has been conducted and comissioned as a web application on the website of the university: http://360.hacettepe.edu.tr/

In several times, university advertising catalogues are produced and when needed, various visual products are being generated by our unit.

Unit of Desktop Publishing and Visual Design

• The unit conducts activities of traditional desktop publishing forms such as designing and publishing of printed communication instruments as well as teaching the processes of design, application and publishing for digital and multi-platform communication instruments such as new media (internet), interactive media (multimedia) and cartoon animation.

• The main aim of the unit is to provide sufficient strategical and technical knowledge for the attendants to be able to design a professional communicaton project.

• Attendants are expected to realize a project’s design, application and publishing process either individually or in a team work.

Unit of Production

• Unit of Production aims at providing basic knowledge of film making and directing processes, presenting the uses of camera and editing as well as informing the students about the team work.

• To enhance the social memory and to contribute to the cultural development, the unit produces documentary films and release them on national and international scales.

• To contribute to the institutional image and social prestige of Hacettepe University, the Unit of Production records and edits the activities (conferences, concerts, festivals etc.) of our university and provides content for H. U. Internet TV.

Moment Journal

Moment Journal is a peer-reviewed, international online journal published twice a year by the Faculty of Communication, Hacettepe University. The Journal is intended to promote the broad field of cultural studies with genuine academic works that promise new questions and strong theoretical perspectives.

Since the first year of publishing, 2014, the journal has been issued respectively with the titles, “Spirit of the Age and Counter-Hegemony”, “Memory”, “Migration”, “Women’s Narratives” and “Pop-Islam”. The issue titled as “Cinema and Politics” will be published in December, 2016.
