• A webinar is an online seminar or
workshop delivered over the internet.
• Host organizes event and invites
attendees.
• At the scheduled time, host and attendees
log into the webinar hosting provider (like
GoToWebinar.)
• Webinars are “synchronous” –
everyone views at the same time.

• A high speed internet connection
• For GoToWebinar: – A computer running Windows 7, Vista, XP or Server
2004
• IE 7, Firefox 3.0, or Chrome 5.0 or newer
– Or a Mac with OS X 10.4.11 Tiger or newer
• Safari 3.0, Firefox 3.0, or Chrome 5.0 or newer
• Will need to download Java client
– It’s just one click
• There are many different webinar hosting
providers, and each interface is different.
• The most common is GoToWebinar
• You will see the host’s screen. May
include:
– Powerpoint presentations (like this one.)
– Live or recorded video
– Live web or software demonstrations
• Usually attendees microphones are muted
• Chat box
– Can input questions (usually only the host can
see them, though they may share them with
the audience
– “Raise Hand” – button. Click if you have a
question and host may unmute your mic so
that all attendees can hear you.
• You may be able to call in by phone to
hear the audio, though most people just
use their computer’s audio system.
• In addition to the host, there may be 1 or
more panelists.
• Typically scheduled for 1 hour, usually last
longer.

• When you register for a webinar,
remember time zones.

• Webinars are not always recorded
– If they are, the recording may not be made
available.
– Or, you may have to pay to access the
recording.
– In order to maintain interest, host may not
disclose if recording will be made available.
• Recorded webinars are usually presented
embedded in a web page, so there’s a
huge variety in look, feel, and functionality.
• Let’s look at a couple of examples of
recorded webinars…
• May be one-time events or regularly
scheduled

• Content-only webinars
– Not pitching any products
– Used for:
• Creating a product
• Bonus
• “Lead magnet” for opt-ins
• Part of paid product or membership
• Branding
• Community building and fun!
• “Pitch” Webinars
– Selling a product
• But don’t let that scare you off!
– Pitch webinars are usually 1/2 to 2/3 content.
• Often shows “what” and “why” then the product shows
you “how.”
• Or show you how to do something manually and they
are selling an automated solution.
• Content is often outstanding – “If he’s giving away
stuff this good, the stuff he’s selling must be
amazing.”
– Often a special offer good only during
the webinar.
• Interactive
• It’s best to forgive technical problems. They
happen.
• A good webinar provides valuable content that is
useful even if you don’t buy the product
– Provides enough information for you to make an
informed decision
– Information is based on facts, not hype
• There will always be some hype (we’re marketers,
after all) but there should be facts as well.
