Transcript of Before you teach this lesson You will need the graphs on the last slide printed – 1 per student,...
Before you teach this lesson
• You will need the graphs on the last slide printed – 1 per student, for cycle one (LO1)
• The video file is downloaded and needs no internet connection
• Slides 6 and 7 are additional evaluations for cycle 1 – not needed but pose nice challenges as per the titles I have given them.
• For cycle 2 You will need enough laminates of each graph to cover the number of 3s you have (7-10?) – don’t spend too long on this, I’ve timed it on the slide
• Cycle two will need you to have printed off tables for them to complete (slide 13).

Words and phrases to help
Exponential growth (where number double, triple or quadruple or even square.)
Linear growth (where numbers increase by an equal amount.)
Significant increase
Steady increase

A good description: World population increases over time. Between 1650 and 1850 population increase is linear and increasing steadily (by a similar amount each time). Between 1850 and 1950 the rate of increase grows and beyond 1950 population increase is exponential.

Population Change
How and why is population changing in
different parts of the world?
• Watch this clip – explore (liquid analogy)• Using the laminated graphs form expert groups
and mindmap how one of the 3 country’s populations has changed – they should focus on: (1) general pattern; (2) details and anaomalies; and, (3) present/future trends (elaborate). 5 minuites as experts. (India, Sweden and UK)
• Report back to your home group and share the descriptions using the summary table (evaluation) – 8 minutes.

How does the data below help to understand India’s growing population (2 marks)?
What is the approximate change in the % of people with access to clean water between 1990 and 2010?

How do the graph and data table above help us to explain the differences in Sweden and India’s population change from activity 2 (use your summary tables)?
