Gentlemen Bootleggers The True Story of Templeton Rye, Prohibition, and a Small Town in Cahoots Bryce T. Bauer

During Prohibition, while Al Capone was rising to worldwide prominence as Public Enemy Number One, the townspeople of rural Templeton, Iowa-population just 418-were busy with a bootlegging empire of their own. Led by Joe Irlbeck, the whip-smart and gregarious son of a Bavarian immigrant, the outfit of farmers, small merchants, and even the church Monsignor worked together to create a whiskey so excellent it was ordered by name: Templeton Rye. Gentlemen Bootleggers tells a never-before-told tale of ingenuity, bootstrapping, and perseverance in one small town, showcasing a group of immigrants who embraced the American ideals of self-reliance, dynamism, and democratic justice. It relies on previously classified Prohibition Bureau investigation files, federal court case files, extensive newspaper archive research, and a recently disclosed interview with kingpin Joe Irlbeck. Unlike other Prohibition-era tales of big-city gangsters, it provides an important reminder that bootlegging wasn't only about glory and riches, but could be in the service of a higher goal: producing the best whiskey...

Summary

Bryce T. Bauer is a Hearst Award-winning journalist who has written for the Daily Iowan, the Cedar Rapids Gazette, Saveur, and other publications. He is coproducing and cowriting West Iowa Whiskey Cookers, a documentary on Prohibition-era bootlegging. He lives in New York City.

101 Legendary Whiskies You're Dying to Try But (Probably) Never Will Ian Buxton

Exploring the finest and rarest whiskies in the world: wonderful whiskey you're dying to try but probably never will

These whiskies may be extraordinarily hard to find, impossible to buy, or literally the sole survivor of a long lost distillery-some are even priceless but, for the first time ever, they're assembled here for connoisseurs to "savor." Some are the Ferraris of whiskey: luxury thoroughbreds beyond the reach of all but the most fortunate, discerning, and wealthy of enthusiasts and collectors. Some are whiskey's equivalent to the Model T Ford-once ubiquitous, but now rendered exceptional by the passage of time. All are legendary. Whether the world's oldest, rarest, or most expensive whiskies, leading whiskey writer Ian Buxton unlocks these liquid treasures and meets the people who make, sell, or simply preserve them. This book shares the secrets of whiskey's elite, explaining what makes these whiskies so special, so intriguing, and so desirable.

Summary

Author BioIan Buxton is a former marketing director of Glenmorangie and the author of 101 Whiskies to Try Before You Die. He was elected a Keeper of the Quaich in 1991, the highest honor of the Scotch whiskey industry; he is a member of the international tasting panel for the annual World Whisky Awards; and he is a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Distillers. He writes regular columns for the Keeper, Whisky Magazine, and WhiskyEtc magazine.

The Smart Guide to Single Malt Scotch Whisky Elizabeth Riley Bell

Single malt Scotch whiskies are renowned for their highly nuanced flavors and aromas, but the world of the single malt Scotch, while rooted in tradition and fellowship, can also throw up an intimidating number of offerings. Lavishly illustrated, this singular and savvy guide provides information on the making of malt whisky, the primary whisky regions, the various distilleries, identifying the flavors in each distillery's "house style," how to appreciate the flavors and aromas of single malt whisky, reading a bottle label-even how to pronounce the names of certain Scotch whiskies. Additional sections introduce readers to the language of whisky descriptors and a few little-known distilleries, as well as how to manage a taste of some of the rarest and priciest single malt Scotches available. And, because a good single malt is always better when enjoyed in company, this manual offers recommendations for buying single malt Scotch whisky and hosting a tasting. This is an indispensable resource for anyone looking to deepen their appreciation for and knowledge of this "sipping whisky."

Summary

The Audacity of Hops The History of America's Craft Beer Revolution Tom Acitelli

In 1975, there was a single craft brewery in the United States; today there are more than 2,000. A once-fledgling, clumsy movement, craft beer has become ubiquitous nationwide and even includes a honey ale brewed at the White House. Powered by millions of savvy, devoted consumers and raking in billions of dollars annually for producers and retailers, the movement has changed the industry landscape and the international reputation of American beer, upended the big beer giants that once seemed untouchable, and altered forever drinking habits, closet hobbies, and bar conversation. But the epic narrative of this class of brew has never been chronicled in one volume-until now.

Based on interviews with all of the biggest and most influential names in craft brewing since the 1970s-including brewers, critics, and marketers-The Audacity of Hops brims with charming, remarkable stories, which together weave a very American business tale, one of formidable odds and refreshing success.

The Audacity of Hops will be the holiday and birthday gift for every craft beer lover. Entertaining, informa...

Man Walks into a Pub A Sociable History of Beer Pete Brown

In Man Walks into a Pub, Pete Brown takes us on a journey through the amazing history of beer, from the first sacred sip of ancient Egyptian bouza to the last pint of lager on a Friday night. It's an extraordinary tale of yeast-obsessed monks and teetotaling prime ministers; of exploding breweries, a bear in a yellow nylon jacket, and a Canadian who changed the drinking habits of a nation. It's also the story of the rise of the British pub, from humble origins through an epic, thousand-year struggle to survive bad government and misguided commerce.

First Vintage Wine in Colonial New South Wales Julie McIntyre

Exploring the forgotten history of the early Australian wine industry, this book reveals the challenges of choosing vine stock, the battles to protect against pests and diseases, and the innovation of new technologies that assisted small-scale growers, many of whom worked in wine regions that have since vanished from the landscape and memory for much of the 20th century. Few people know that vine cuttings were brought to Australia on the First Fleet and planted in Governor Arthur Phillip's garden at Circular Quay. Or that botanist and champion of colonial development Joseph Banks encouraged plans to create a wine industry from the earliest years of the colony. In addition, before the assisted migration of German vinedressers in the 1830s, any convict or free settler with a hint of vine-growing or wine-making expertise was quickly drafted to the cause. This colorful history is the first to trace wine growing, making, and drinking in colonial New South Wales.

Whisky Galore Compton Mackenzie

It's 1943, and the war has brought rationing to the Hebridean Islands of Great and Little Todday. When food is in short supply, it is bad enough, but when the whisky runs out, it looks like the end of the world. Morale is at rock bottom. George Campbell needs a wee dram to give him the courage to stand up to his mother and marry Catriona. The priest, the doctor, and, of course, the landlord at the inn are all having a very thin time of it. There's no conversation, no jollity, no fun-until a ship-wreck off the coast brings a piece of extraordinary good fortune. Abridged.

Summary

Compton Mackenzie was born in West Hartlepool in 1883. He was educated at St. Paul's School and Magdalen College, Oxford. During the First World War he became a Captain in the Royal Marines, becoming Director of the Aegean Intelligence Service. He wrote more than 90 books-novels, history and biography, essays and criticism, children's stories and verse, and was also an outstanding broadcaster. He founded and edited until 1961 the magazine the Gramophone, and was President of the Siamese Cat Club. He lived for many years on the island of Barra in the Outer Hebrides, but later settled in Edinburgh. Compton Mackenzie died in 1972.

Peat Smoke and Spirit A Portrait of Islay and Its Whiskies Andrew Jefford

Despite its tiny size, seven different whisky distilleries populate the Isle of Islay, where some of the wildest and most flavorful hops in the malt-whisky spectrum are grown. Scotland's renowned island is uncovered in this fascinating account, including its rich history-chock-full of stories of shipwrecks and storms-and its luscious wildlife and landscape. Interwoven in the narrative are tales of the whiskies themselves, traced from a distant past of illegal stills to their present-day prosperity. The flavor of each spirit is analyzed and the differences between them teased out, as are the stories of the notable men and women who played an integral part in their creation. Wonderfully evocative, this is the story of a place and a taste never to be forgotten once sampled.

Andrew Jefford has won eight Glenfiddich Awards for his food writing, along with several other awards. He is the Author Bio

The Savoy Cocktail Book Harry Craddock

Synonymous with style, elegance, and sophistication, the Savoy is unsurprisingly also the birthplace of some of the most famous cocktails in the world. During the 1920s and 1930s, Prohibition-dodging Americans visiting London for tea-dances and cocktails made the bar at the Savoy their home. Here they were entertained by legendary American barman Harry Craddock, inventor of the White Lady and popularizer of the Dry Martini. Originally published in 1930, the Savoy Cocktail Book features 750 of Harry's most popular recipes. It is a fascinating record of the cocktails that set London alight at the time-and which are just as popular today. Taking you from Slings to Smashes, Fizzes to Flips, and featuring art deco illustrations, this book is the perfect gift for any budding mixologist or fan of 1930s-style decadence and sophistication.

Oz & James Drink to Britain Oz Clarke, James May

Wine expert Oz Clarke and travel enthusiast James May combine their passions in this tasty travelogue as they embark on a summer road trip around the UK in a quest to find the drink that defines modern Britain. Starting in a barley field in Yorkshire, the hapless duo meander their way through the country exploring the best and worst of British beers and sampling numerous other drinks of the land, including wine, whisky, gin, vodka, and cider. Their destinations include maltsters, small breweries and distilleries, sparkling wine makers, and hop growers, and along the way Oz and James quibble and tiff with riotous results. Lighthearted and accidentally educational, this is a fun look at the state of drinking in Britain today.

Filled with vivid descriptions of delicious wines, great food, and stunning views, this is a unique insight into the world of the winemaker, and a story of passion, dedication, and love

When Caro and Sean find the perfect 10-hectare vineyard in Saussignac, it seems like their dreams of becoming winemakers in the south of France are about to come true. But they arrive in France with their young family (a toddler and a newborn) to be faced with a dilapidated 18th-century farmhouse and an enterprise that may never, ever make them a living. Undeterred by mouse infestations, a leaking roof, treacherous hordes of insects, visits from the local farm "police," and a nasty accident with an agricultural trimmer, Caro and Sean set about transforming their "beyond eccentric" winery into a successful business as they embark on the biggest adventure of their lives-learning to make wine from the roots up.

Summary
