The Sunflower Corridor: My Vision For The Future

The U.S. Conference of Mayors has proposed an election-year policy agenda called Mayors’ Vi-sion for America: A 2020 Call for Action prioritiz-ing solutions around In-frastructure, Innovation and Inclusion.

Mike Beehler is a reg-istered professional en-gineer and Fellow in The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

ASCE has an Infra-structure Scorecard that grades roads, bridges, water/wastewater treat-ment plants, airports and seaports, and the electri-cal grid with a composite grade of an unacceptably low, D+. Both politi-cal parties will spend $2 Trillion to address

this need. Funding may come from increased gas or use taxes, more quan-titative easing (deficit spending) or, Mike’s pre-ferred option, a domes-tic Public Private Part-nership (PPP). A PPP can take many forms, but is generally a consortium that arranges project fi-nancing to design, build, operate and maintain in-frastructure receiving a stream of payment from tolls, fees or government until given back to the public owner.

grams for middle and high schools to produce innovative technical graduates that America needs to compete in the world marketplace. In his fascinating book Ar-tificial Intelligence, Chi-na and the New World Order, Kai Fu Lee states that “40-50 percent of to-day’s jobs will be re-placed by artificial intel-ligence in the next 15-20 years”. If Lee is just “half right,” a $2T infrastruc-ture investment allows us to prepare.

Big investments in STEAM for our children and grandchildren will produce a new genera-tion of graduates with a vision for the future and the technical training

to support it. This “next generation” of young men and women from all socio-economic and de-mographic backgrounds will have opportunities to rebuild their commu-nities as states across the nation receive their share of $2T to design and build 21st century infrastructure. New jobs for graduates, a chance to start a new business or expand an existing business, engagement in emerging technologies that form an infrastruc-ture ecosystem, or get-ting a second job.

The American Dream is generally built upon the free market, the Rule of Law and private proper-ty rights, but, individu-

ally, it can mean some-thing different to each person. The Mayors’ Vi-sion for America prior-itizes their bipartisan solutions for some of the greatest challenges fac-ing our nation around infrastructure, innova-tion and inclusion. To-gether, we can build a better, brighter future for all and provide equal opportunity for “your” American Dream.

$2 Trillion is 2000 billion-dollar proj-ects. Mike Beehler sold the first bil-lion-dollar scale electric transmis-sion projects in the history of the utility industry. The Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant near DeSoto has historically served our nation and surrounding communi-ties well, but today is an abandoned environmen-tal superfund clean-up site ripe with potential.

When the superfund clean-up at Sunflower is completed, the pri-vate owners will need to mitigate the asbestos in the remaining build-ings. Then, in close coordination and col-laboration with the Sun-flower property owners, we can create an excit-ing new vision tenta-tively named The Sun-flower Corridor. Dozens of square miles stretch-ing from DeSoto in the north to Gardner/Edger-ton in the south ready to be master planned as a smart city and home for clean, high-paying man-ufacturing and distribu-

tion jobs.The Sunflower Corri-

dor will allow us to move aggressively to repatri-ate foreign manufac-turing after COVID-19 and bring vital Ameri-can manufacturing jobs home to the heart of America.

Gardner already has a progressive strategic plan for their future. To-gether with Edgerton, Gardner sits at the cen-ter of interstate highway, rail and air transporta-tion assets and near the geographic center of the United States. They pro-vide good governance, low taxes, low cost public power (Gardner), attrac-tive quality of life, and access to a well-educat-ed and highly productive workforce. DeSoto has a rich history in John-son County. They seek to preserve that history and the charm of their community with a com-prehensive plan updated

in 2017 that includes var-ied uses of the Sunflower Plant.

As your Congressman, I will work with property owners and community leaders in Gardner, Ed-gerton, DeSoto, Olathe and Johnson County to plan for the day that the vast undeveloped acre-age and potential of The Sunflower Corridor is tapped for rich, posi-tive economic develop-ment. The Sunflower Corridor could model a live, work, play smart city; a “living laboratory” attracting visitors from around the country and world. Clean electrifi-cation, net-zero ener-gy and water buildings, green infrastructure for storm-water retention and detention, renew-ables plus storage, and high capacity broad-band tying it all togeth-er. Some of the concepts that we pilot and prove in The Sunflower Corri-

dor will be applicable to a potential Moon-base being discussed at NASA. Like the original moon vision in the 1960s, The Sunflower Corridor is grand vision for our chil-dren and grandchildren. We will motivate and inspire them to “shoot for the stars, and hit the Moon” figuratively and literally. We will equip them with great schools, teachers, and adminis-trators backed by pri-vately funded STEAM.

Therefore, we need a Republican candidate with proven grassroots success in the primary and one who can provide the biggest, most obvious difference between AOC-KC’s so-cialist worldview and free market capitalism. I was retired and en-joying my version of the American Dream. I love my country, com-munity and the people in it. I love what Presi-dent Trump has accom-plished. I saw Demo-crats undercut those accomplishments with their focus on Russian collusion and impeach-ment. So, I’m offering my professional cre-dentials as a success-ful businessman and engineer to serve the community where I’ve had a home for 25 years and where my wife and I raised our family. Books Are Being Written: Covid-19

By the time you read this newspaper, Gregg Jarrett and Newt Gin-grich will each be fin-ishing their final drafts of new books on the Coronavirus 2019 pan-demic. COVID-19 was a Black Swan event for America. No one saw it coming and few were prepared for it. The data will ultimately tell the story....number of deaths due to COVID-19, number of deaths due to lack of normally ac-cessible medical care, any social-economic and demographic dis-parities, job losses and businesses damaged or destroyed. Churches will be re-united and the Royals and Chiefs will be playing in crowded stadiums...we hope. We forfeited our fundamen-tal 1st and 4th Amend-ment rights and trust-ed multiple layers of government to guide us through. Government proved what we already knew.....there are very few true public servants left. Perhaps, next elec-tion, we can change that. Will you join me?
