1 Pick up a topic in Engineers and Society discuss your understanding on how engineering

    professionals serve the society

    1. You are an engineer in a Factory prepare a list of your responsibility in the Factorythat produces remote control toys.

    2. You are an engineer that teaches technical subject in a College, Polytechnic or aUniversity. List your responsibility as a teacher/lecturer.

    3. You are a research engineer working on sustainable energy list your duties as aresearcher.

    4. You are an engineer working in a water supply company , list your responsibility inwater works.

    5. You are an engineer working in a telecommunications company list yourresponsibility as a telecoms engineer.

    6. You are an engineer working in a utility company like TNB . List your responsibilityas a power distribution staff.

    2. Describe how the followings situation should be resolved by an engineer1. You are in a remote jungle with no mobile phone coverage and no other means of

communication . You need to listen to the latest radio news broadcast . How can u

design a simple radio receiver by using a reasonably long insulated wire , a small

    signal diode and one earphone.

    2. You are in a remote orang asli village doing some research work. With a pair of longwires, a pair of speakers , 2 old AAA batteries and 2 new AAA batteries how can you

demonstrate a functional telephone to the orang asli children.

    3. You are designing a 12 Mhz oscillator for radio transmitter circuit. You are only givena 1 Mhz Crystal and a couple of RF transformers, a few capacitor , transistors, resistors and a shortwave radio which can tune in the range of 3 to 15 Mhz . By

employing your knowledge of Fourier series, signal and system and electronic circuits

how can produce such 12 Mhz Oscillator.

    4. With your knowledge of principles of communication system, electronics and circuitanalysis

    a) show a circuit design that can be used to tune shortwave radio broadcasting toyour AM radio receiver in your car.

    b) show a circuit design that can be used to tune shortwave radio broadcasting toyour FM radio receiver in your car.

Given : AM Frequency range : 530 kHz to 1600 kHz

FM Frequency range : 88Mhz to 108 Mhz

SW Frequency range : 5 Mhz to 15 Mhz

    5. Your father is using a 1980 car that uses mechanical contact point ignition system.Contact point is not reliable in the current microelectronic world. How can you help

your father to design an electronic circuit to change the contact point ignition to an

    electrical/electronic ignition system.

    6. Your are living near a river. Can you design a Water Turbine for the followingPurposes :

    a) To pick up water from the river to your homeb) To generate a 12V DC supply for your 90 Watt AC powered TV

by using and old car alternator.

    3. Describe how to develop a 25 lines 40 character display system to be connected to your TVantenna socket. The system uses ASCII character code burnt into an EPROM and characters to

be displayed are keyed in via a standard keyboard. You are required to employ standard TTL or

MOS ICs and analog circuitry in your design.

    4) Data communication is an important subject for electrical engineering student to gainknowledge in current ICT world. Data are usually sent in packet burst complying to specific

world standards. For easy data capture and recovery at the receiving end there are cases where

data and clock pulses are sent simultaneously via two different communication channels. Thereare also cases where data are sent without the clock signal. The receiver has to generate the

local clock and the incoming bit stream is used to synchronize the data and the clock for correct

data sampling. If the clock is not synchronized with the data stream, a 1 may be sampled as a

    0 or a 0 may be sampled as a 1.

Design a clock recovery and synchronization circuit in data communication application where

local clock synchronization signal is derived from the incoming data stream. You may want to

use diagram in Fig1.1. 4 as your guide.

Fig1.1. 4 : An example of Data Communication Receiver that employs Clock Synchronisation by deriving

the clock synchronization signal from the data stream.

    ASSIGNMENT 1.4

    PO 01 Engineering Knowledge

Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and an engineering

    specialisation to the solution of complex engineering problems;

CO 03 Explain regulatory and statutory requirements for professional engineering practice.

The government intelligent agency has a strong believe that our country is going to be attacked by a

notorious nation. Due to the distance of our country and that nation, the attack is believed to be in the

form of an air raid. The government has passed this information to UMP FKEE and the Faculty has

decided to pass the responsibility to prepare the air raid surveillance, retaliation and the defense

system to BEE 4641 students. The government allows the group to make use of the available ground to

air artillery which consists of high powered automatic cannons and radar system plus a set of

powerful computer system and communication network . Your group are required to design an

accurate ground to air defensive control mechanism by making use of your expertise . Describe your

pseudo strategy in dealing with setting up defensive attacking mechanism towards approaching enemy

war planes. You may apply empirical knowledge of mathematics , principle of communication system ,

digital and analog electronic expertise and principle of control system and expertise in computer

programming in coming out with an effective solution. Figure 1.4 may be used as your guide.
