Four with tiesto education help evaluate nominees

Nomination processNomination as a Times-Mail Scholastic Star was open to high school seniors in the

newspaper’s coverage area. Specifi c criteria and the processes of garnering nominations were left up to each

school, but the Times-Mail took steps to make the number of nominations proportional, so as not to over-represent or under-represent schools.

Each eligible school could nominate one senior for every 100 students in grades 9-12. Every school was able to nominate at least one student even if its enrollment was below 100.

Using that formula, 31 nominations were received. Some schools that were contacted did not respond and some schools that did respond didn’t submit their maximum allotment of nominations. Every student nominated is featured in today’s newspaper as being among the Gold or Silver Times-Mail Scholastic Stars.

Meet the judgesA fi ve-person panel composed of a Times-Mail representative and four local judges with

ties to their communities and K-12 education made its choices from nominations solicited from administrators at high schools in the readership area.

Nominees shared their information, after which judges individually made their top choices, focusing on the students’ SAT scores, grade point averages, extracurricular activi-ties, community service and leadership. The top 20 nominees were named Gold Scholastic Stars. Remaining students are recognized as Silver Scholastic Stars.

Judges were James Oswalt, retired Mitchell Community Schools superintendent who has been active in many community groups; Sari Wood, a retired Parkview Primary School principal; Annette Seib, former teacher in North Lawrence schools; Jim O’Connell, former counselor at Paoli High School, and Roger Moon, Times-Mail staff writer.see STARS page D10

Notes from the judges“These young people are doing so many good things for our community. We have so many bright students graduat-ing from our high schools. I hope they will be able to return to our communities. Each would be a real asset.”

— Sari Wood, retired principal at Parkview Primary School

“It appears many of them are as, or more, engaged with their communities than their school extra-curricular activi-ties. That bodes well for the future. Such students may well be core leaders in the communities in which they choose to live, and we have learned that successful communities most often have dedicated volunteers actively working to improve the quality of life.”

— James Oswalt, retired superintendent of the Mitchell Community Schools

“They realize that it is going to take more than a high school diploma to pursue the vocation that will enable them to live a meaningful and happy life.”

— Jim O’Connell, former Paoli High School guidance counselor
