Why is Florence Nightingale Famous?How did she become famous?Florence Nightingale went to the Crimean War to nurse wounded soldiers. She and her nurses saved many lives.Where did she live?Florence was born in 1820. This was ten years before Britain had its first steam passenger railway. She lived through the long reign of Queen Victoria. She died in 1910, after the age of electricity, cars and planes began. What Florence Nightingale did?Florence Nightingale made hospitals cleaner places. She showed that trained nurses and clean hospitals helped sick people get better. She was the founder of nursing.

Florence goes to warFlorence and 38 nurses arrived in Turkey in November 1854. At first the Army doctors wanted nothing to do with her. Florence would not go away. So the doctors let the nurses into the Army hospital at Scutari. Florence got busy cleaning up.Walking with her lampAt night Florence walked around the wards, to make sure the men were comfortable. She sat with dying soldiers. She wrote letters home for men who could not write. She carried a lantern, so the soldiers called her 'The Lady with the Lamp'.

About Medal

At the Eighth International Conference of Red Cross Societies in London in 1907, the assembled delegates decided to create a commemorative International Nightingale Medal to be awarded to ladies distinguished in the nursing field. Subsequently, the Florence Nightingale Medal was instituted in 1912 by the International Committee of the Red Cross. It is the highest international distinction a nurse can achieve and is awarded to nurses or nursing aides for "exceptional courage and devotion to the wounded, sick or disabled or to civilian victims of a conflict or disaster" or "exemplary services or a creative and pioneering spirit in the areas of public health or nursing education"Florence Nightingale Medal

In 2009, the 42nd set of medals was awarded. The 28 recipients from 15 countries in that year. In 2007, the 41st sets of medals were awarded. The 35 recipients from 18 countries in that year brought the total number of medals awarded.

Florence Nightingale AwardeesIn 2013, the 44th sets of medals were awarded. The 32 recipients from 16 countries in that year (including one posthumously to a deceased delegate from the British Red Cross), brought the total number of medals awarded to 1,408.

In 2011, the 43rd sets of medals were awarded. The 39 recipients from 19 countries in that year (including for the first time to two Kenyan nurses), brought the total number of medals awarded to 1376.
