MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

On September 12th, our Physical Education Department, Child Study Team, Guidance Department, and a select group of

The full-day, intensive workshop was the second part of a training series that equips Kingsway educators with the tools and resources to implement mindfulness in both the classroom and their own lives. being patient, and letting go. Through awareness of the present moment, those who practice mindfulness are able to respond to their lives rather than merely react to it through impulse or habit. Practicing mindfulness helps us find peace, calm, and stillness, even when our lives seem stressful or chaotic. In short, mindfulness is a simple practice that helps us to be aware of—and reduce--everyday stress. Why Mindfulness in Schools? National statistics show us that 1 in 5 students will exhibit symptoms of mental health disorders at some point in their lives. Proactive supports and interventions that address anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and stress certainly have a place in the classroom—perhaps now more than ever before. By integrating mindfulness into daily practices in the classroom, the district aims to instill in our students: compassion, calm, focus, and resilience. Mindfulness bolsters our students’ social, emotional and behavioral wellness. What does Mindfulness look like at Kingsway?

For the 2017-2018 school year, the mindfulness movement begins with the incorporation of brief, 2-5 minute daily practices in students’ Physical Education and Health classes. Through discussion, mini lessons on neuroscience, breathing practices, and movement, students are exploring techniques that improve self-regulation and provide relaxation. Though all are encouraged to join in the practice, participation is optional. Students are encouraged to explore the practices in an open, non-judgmental environment.

In 2010, the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act was enacted and schools throughout New Jersey began recognizing the first week

in October as the “Week of Respect”. This year, the Week of Respect is October 2nd through October 6th, running simultaneously with Spirit Week in the high school! This created an opportunity for Anti-Bullying Club students to collaborate with Student Council members to celebrate our Dragon Pride while also honoring respect for all and celebrating diversity. Anti-Bullying Club students will be in the South Gym throughout the week, where Spirit Week Activities will be taking place. Students will have a chance to complete a Week of Respect Challenges to earn tickets to be entered into a raffle, with winners and prizes to be announced on Tuesday and Friday. Students should look for the table with the “Take What You Need” display to learn lesser known facts about bullying.

WEEK OF RESPECT COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE

With the adoption of our new Coat of Arms we have settled on new motto for the upcoming school year: Committed to

Excellence. Our new motto centers on several standards we refer to as Standards of Excellence and applies to faculty, administration, support staff and our students.

• We focus on the needs of those we serve.• We choose to be the best we can be.• We strive for continuous improvement.• We take ownership for what we do and do not do.• We communicate effectively.• We do little things well.• We take pride in our work & our school.• We value & respect those who make our school extraordinary.

At Kingsway we choose to be excellent. We live excellence and this is reflected in our attitudes. We own our actions. We expect to apply these standards in all that we do: little things, big things, everything. Choose it. Live it. Own it. Expect it. Please join us by applying this motto to all that you do and use it to inspire our students academically, artistically, and athletically.

Our push to improve student attendance is now four years in the making

and we are proud to be a District that takes a bold approach to reducing student absenteeism. Our “family friendly” calendar, complete with a fall and spring recess and the elimination of all half days along with the adoption of a more rigid attendance policy, reducing the number of unexcused absences to eight, has proved to benefit our students.

The middle school attendance rate remained high at 95.4% and the high school attendance rate improved to 94.5%. These are significant increases in a short period of time. The chart below reflects our steady improvement when compared to our previous six-year average.

These are encouraging results for a District that was once designated by the Department of Education as a school with chronic student absenteeism. (Chronic absenteeism occurs when more than eight percent of the students miss eighteen or more school days.) This designation was eye-opening for district leadership and a review of student attendance data occurred in the spring 2014, resulting in our new strategy to reduce absenteeism.

There is little doubt that the teaching and learning process has a cumulative effect and we know that our students miss a lot when they are absent from school. The more absences a student collects, the more disruption to the learning cycle the student encounters. In fact, missing a few days of school may seem inconsequential but a growing body of research suggests that students who miss as little as five school days are negatively affected. Students who miss ten or more days have a more difficult time graduating high school.

Kingsway’s efforts to reduce student absenteeism is essential to ensuring its students are maximizing their opportunities for success

but timely in this new world of teacher accountability. Why bother focusing on instructional practices if students are not going to be present to benefit from them? Of course this question is more rhetorical than anything, but it makes you think and put things into perspective.

As we open our fourth school year with our push to improve student attendance, we encourage our parents to continue assisting in our efforts to reduce student absenteeism. Plan vacations around school calendar events, taking advantage of our fall, winter, and spring recess. If you are not sure if you should keep your child home from school, due to physical symptoms, follow these simple guidelines below:

• If a child has a fever of 100.5 degrees F or higher, he/she should stay home. Students may return to school when they are fever-free for 24 hours, without fever-reducing medicine.

• If your child is vomiting, he/she should stay home.• If your child has diarrhea, lice, scabies, skin lesions, or is

jaundiced, he/she should stay home, and seek additional medical attention.

We have excellent parent resources on our school website under Health Services to assist our parents. Go to the District website at www.krsd.org, click Health Services under the Department tab. To check out the school calendar, follow the link here or go to the Calendars tab under About Kingsway tab.

At Kingsway we will continue to monitor student attendance and thank our parents for your cooperation with these policy and calendar changes. We cannot fix this problem alone and a true partnership with our families is imperative if we hope to see continually improvement.

BULLETIN BOARD SEPTEMBER SUPPORT STAFF SPOTLIGHT EMPLOYEE: JEANIE HUMMEL “There is no love sincerer than the love of food” — George Bernard Shaw

Studies consistently show a connection between healthy eating and academic achievement. Simply, healthy well-nourished students are more likely to excel in their studies and guide students towards a lifelong relationship with healthy food choices. As the cook for the Kingsway Regional High School, Mrs. Jeanie Hummel has made it her sincere commitment over the past 17 years to ensure students have the “food tools” to do well in the classroom and in life.

In the kitchen, Mrs. Hummel has contributed to planning countless meals. With the ever changing school nutritional guidelines set forth by the USDA, she ensures the students are well- fed with taste and nutrition in mind while meeting the stringent guidelines. Whether she is planning the next day’s meals, cooking or ensuring the kitchen’s Board of Health standards are met, Mrs. Hummel works diligently to ensure every aspect of the kitchen is run smoothly. Her dedication, energy and sunny demeanor provide the recipe for a positive working environment.

Outside of the kitchen, Mrs. Hummel has attended numerous hours of continuing education in Food Safety and Food Preparation. She has been a vital member of the New Jersey Co-Op, a member of the School Nutrition Association and holds a Certificate in Food

Safety through ServSafe. Her love and passion for food does not end when she leaves the kitchen every day. Each year, Mrs. Hummel harvests an impressive garden of organic potatoes, garlic, tomatoes, snap peas, peppers and tomatoes that even the experienced green thumb would envy.

Mrs. Hummel’s dedication and sincere commitment to the food service program does not go unnoticed. Congratulations for being September’s Support Staff Spotlight!

WHAT IS SEPAC?The Special Education Parent Advisory Council, known as SEPAC,

is a parent-led group for parents of students with disabilities. Meetings are held throughout the year on a variety of topics. Two in particular are: Special Needs Planning for your Loved One with a Disability: Government Benefits, Estate Planning & Funding Strategies and When There is No More Child Study Team: Agency Resources after Graduation. SEPAC offers a forum for parents to exchange ideas and resources. Attendees are welcome to come regularly or only when the topic is of interest. Parents of all students with disabilities are welcome regardless of how mild or profound the child’s disability is. SEPAC’s first meeting of the year will be held on Wednesday, November 1st at 6:30PM in the high school district administration conference room. The topic is Internet Safety for your Child with Special Needs.

COLLEGE AND CAREERAs a part of our continued dedication to students College and

Career development, the School Counseling department created over 100 opportunities for students to meet with college and university admissions staff to increase college awareness and hosted over 20 professionals through the Career Speaker Series last year. The School Counseling department will once again be offering these opportunities for the 2017-2018 school year. Students interested can sign up for these opportunities via their Naviance account. Students with questions should contact their counselor. If you are interested in volunteering for our high school Career Speaker Series, please contact Mr. McBride at [email protected].

CURRICULUM NEWS & NOTESSEPTEMBER SPOTLIGHT TEACHER: JEN STARKIn the spring of 2005, Ms. Jennifer Stark walked through the doors

of Kingsway Regional High School to do her student teaching under the tutelage of Mr. Dubbs, thus marking the beginning of her professional career in education and her immersion into Dragonland. Since that time, she has taken our Biology department to new heights, as she has taught all levels including Academic, Honors, and AP Biology, Anatomy and Physiology to even teaching a year of Biology to our most behaviorally challenged students. During her tenure here, I have witnessed Starky, as she is known to her students and colleagues, come out of her shell and become the kind of teacher that students flock to. With her dry sense of humor and easy going demeanor combined with her immense knowledge and love of Biology, it is no wonder why her classes are always at capacity, and students are always in her room.

You will always find Ms. Stark at Kingsway. She is one of the first to arrive in the morning, one of the last to leave at night, and is the consummate fan of Dragon sports and activities, attending most athletic and school events regularly. Her dedication to her craft and to our students is only one of many reasons she stands out here at Kingsway. Two years ago, Ms. Stark reached out and began working with Fox Chase Cancer Center in their Immersion Science program. With this program, Ms. Stark underwent training to be able to guide her students in conducting a six to eight week intensive cancer research project with fruit flies; In the spring, these students participated in the mini-symposium at Fox Chase where they were given the opportunity to share their research with

Philadelphia entrepreneurs, PhD students, and professors. Through Ms. Stark’s vision and leadership, our students were given the opportunity to learn and perform real-live oncology research and experience what it is to be a scientist.

Ms. Stark is also extremely involved outside of her Kingsway classroom. She has been a class advisor as well as the advisor for our Environmental Club for years. Ms. Stark has spent countless hours beautifying our campus and bringing recycling to the forefront in our building. This past summer, she participated in the SJ Chamber of Commerce Summer Institute, sacrificing six weeks of her own time to engage in professional development and collaborative work with other educators from around our area. Ms. Stark continues to be a go-to veteran that other teachers seek out for help and advice as well as serving as a mentor to our newer staff. She is someone who never stops learning, caring, or giving back to Kingsway Regional High School. For all of these reasons and so much more, it is an honor to present Ms. Jennifer Stark, as our September Spotlight Teacher.

KINGSWAY STUDENTS R.A.I.S.E. TO THE OCCASION AT ROWAN

This summer, seven Kingsway students spent six intense weeks

exploring their passion for the sciences as participants of Rowan University’s R.A.I.S.E program.

The program, which stands for Recognizing Achievement and Inspiring Student Excellence, is described as a mini-med program that allows high school students to experience medical school years before they actually apply. “After Rowan R.A.I.S.E., I am 110% sure that I want to spend the rest of my life within the medical field, stated student Matt Miles.”

Each week students interacted with faculty and students from Rowan, studied different bodily systems, attended field trips, and completed their own research project. “Through the engaging and realistic experiences of the R.A.I.S.E. 2017 program, I have been reassured that I am truly passionate about pursuing a career in medicine,” student Annie Lancos noted.

Students were exposed to a complete med school experience throughout their summer composed of critical thinking activities that prepared them to problem-solve. Students were lead through not just lectures, but hands-on dissections, including one of a human brain. Amanda Browne, a current senor at Kingsway, stated,

“Every day I was excited to learn …[This] program has thoroughly enriched my summer and my life by allowing me to experience the field of medicine as a high school student.”

Kudos to the following students for their Commitment to Excellence in learning: Isabel Bennett, Madison Biester, Amanda Browne, Kylie Charnitsky, Harry Huder, Annie Lancos, and Matthew Miles.

STUDENTS SOUGHT OUT SUMMER ENRICHMENTSOur STEM Academy dragons have engaged in a myriad of

fantastic learning experiences throughout the summer season!

Sam Allen was given the opportunity to learn a great deal about animal science and conservation of animals through summer enrichment program at the Philadelphia Zoo.

A few students sought out summer enrichment at post-secondary universities. Nikolaos Kalfas participated in Rowan STEAM Academy at Rowan University where he lived on campus, took a college course and participated in various workshops. Jack Fitzpatrick attended Drexel University’s High School Scholars Program, where he was able to participate in an international business course earning four college credits. Madison Myers attended Harvard University Secondary School Program, where she was able to experience college life for a 7-week semester on campus. She attended physics classes with graduate and undergraduate students. Jake Martin participated in an engineering internship for CCL Industries in Moorestown where he was able to build a 3D printer and custom enclosure around it. Jake trained engineers on how to use this printer and how to

design parts for printing using inventor/fusion 360 CAD programs.

Many of our students gave back to the community this summer through service in the STEM field. Rohit Nambiar, Zalak Modi, and Krishna Patel all volunteered at different health organizations, transporting patients, walking them through the technology of a patient portal and establishing bedside manner.

These are some of the highlights of what our STEM Academy dragons have been up to this summer in the STEM fields. These opportunities are precious gifts which our students do not take for granted. They are very appreciative for their experiences and, moreover, they hope to use what they have learned in their future endeavors.

Therefore, in an effort to reduce the frequency of requests of the same supporters, and ensure that our donors receive valuable advertising and/or access to our signature events, we have streamlined our sponsorship opportunities as follows: • ValedictorianSponsors - Are people or organizations who donate $5,000 or more to the KEF and in exchange receive invitations to all Foundation events, have a student scholarship sponsored in their name, are given web presence and a direct link to their company, and more.• SalutatorianSponsors - Are people or organizations who donate $3,000 - $4,999 and gain access to all Foundation events and will have a teacher mini-grant sponsored in their name, and more.• ScholarofEducationSponsor - Are people or organizations who donate $2,000 – 2,999 and in exchange will receive an invite to all Foundation events, will have their organization listed on the website, programs, and all banners, and a public announcement at football and basketball games.• AmbassadorofEducationSponsor - Are people or organizations who donate $1,000 - $1,999 and in exchange will have their name listed on the website and all banner advertisements.• FriendsofEducationSponsor - Are people or organizations who donate $500 - $999 and in exchange will have their name listed in all Foundation programs.

The Kingsway Regional School District Board of Education has implemented a corporate sponsorship policy that allows local

businesses to have Stadium Banner Advertising in our football, Baseball and Softball Stadiums. Your business’ sign will be displayed around the perimeter of the fields and would be seen by approximately 2,500 – 3,000 spectators at each football game as well as a number of fall events where various sports programs play special games. Baseball and Softball games invite large crowds and sponsors can expect 100 - 200 spectators per game. Additional exposure to community members and outside groups who use the stadiums will be an added benefit to sponsorship. Banner advertisement will remain visible in the spring during all spring track and cross country events as well as at our graduation ceremony, where more than 3,000 guests fill the stadium. CorporateSponsorshipFormPlease complete the sponsorship form below and include a business card and advertisement logo exactly how it is to be displayed on your sign. Emailed advertisements preferred. Please email [email protected].
