developed. That means everyone can strengthen their skills and abilities to lead and
influence.” - Dr. Susan Madsen (Professor of Leadership & Ethics, Utah Valley University)

Goal Setting 1. Long-term Goals
• Specific and Measurable
• Motivating
• Achievable/Attainable
• Relevant
• Trackable and time-bound
Example: Within two years, my team/colleagues will describe me as an inspirational
leader who encourages others to improve results. Success means getting at least a 4.2
on the engagement survey.
2. Intermediate Goals—Eating the elephant a bite at a time.
Examples:
• I will provide positive feedback to one of my team or colleagues at least twice a
week over the next six months.
• I will develop my skills as a situational leader, so I am engaging them in ways that are
appropriate for their skills and experience by completing the Situational Leader II
course within the next six months and applying it with each team member.
3. Prioritized Daily Tasks—What is most important to do today. a. Based on my values (Big Rocks), what should I do today?
b. Which of my long-range goals and intermediate goals should I work on today?
c. What will give me the highest return on the time I invest?
d. What projects/tasks will be the greatest threat to my “survival” if I don’t do them?
e. Which of my goals will be most useful to my family, my well-being, friends, or
customers?
f. Which items from previous daily action lists should I move forward to today?
Setting a goal is like establishing a needle in your compass. Dan Zadra

Rules for Prioritizing Your Day 1. Have one list for all your priorities; don’t separate work and personal into separate lists.
2. Treat time committed to your values as “untouchable”. Consider it an appointment
with yourself.
3. Mentally delete the hours committed to meetings/appointments, when you schedule tasks.
4. In your typical day, how many Interruptions do you have which are both urgent and important? Many people can only schedule tasks for 50 to 60% of their uncommitted/unscheduled time.
5. Break down tasks by their importance today.
A = Urgent; must be done today before I go to bed.
B = Important; should be done today.
C = Useful; could be done today.
Note: A “C” this week, might be an “A” next week.

Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin
My child arrived just the other day; He came to the world in the usual way But there were planes to catch and bills to pay; He learned to walk while I was a way
And he was talkin fore I knew it and as he grew He’d say, “I’m gonna be like you, Dad. You know I’m gonna be like you”
Chorus 1:
And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon; Little boy blue and the man on the moon When you comin’ home, Dad? I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then, Son
You know we’ll have a good time then.
My son turned ten just the other day. He said, “Thanks for the ball, Dad come on let’s play Can you teach me to throw?” I said, “Not today. I’ve got a lot to do”, he said, “That’s OK”
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed He said, I’m gonna be like him, yeah! You know I’m gonna be like him”
Repeat Chorus 1:
Well, he came from college just the other day; So much like a man I just had to say “Son, I’m proud of you, can you sit for a while; He shook his head and said with a smile
“What I’d really like Dad is to borrow the car keys. See you later. Can I have them please?”
Chorus 2: And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon. Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home, Son? I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then, Dad You know we’ll have a good time then.
I’ve long since retired, my son’s moved away. I called him up just the other day
I said, “I’d like to see you if you don’t mind”. He said, “I’d love to Dad if I could find the time See the new job’s a hassle and the kids have the flu.
But it’s sure nice talking you Dad; It’s been sure nice talking to you”
And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me He’d grown up just like me; My boy was just like me
Repeat Chorus 2
Words by Sandy Chapin; Put to music and recorded by Harry Chapin shortly after his son, Josh, was born.
Harry died at age 37. He was killed in a car accident.
