Appendix BWhen the Common Core State Standards were created, the authors included a list of titles in Appendix B that exemplified the text complexity (found in Appendix A) and inherent quality for reading materials at each grade level. This list was developed as a comparative tool for teachers and administrators to use to measure their current libraries against countrywide expectations for rigorous literature and informational texts.

“Words Free As Confetti” by Pat Mora, from Confetti: Poems for Children (also available in Spanish), is recommended as a poetry text exemplar for grades 4–5.

Family Pictures/Cuadros de familia (dual language English/Spanish) is recommended as a read-aloud text exemplar for grades K–1.

We have also compiled additional resources to supplement and complement the Appendix B list. These resources will help educators find and incorporate both contemporary literature and books with authors and/or characters from diverse backgrounds. Our recommended titles also meet the criteria (complexity, quality, range) used by the authors of the Common Core.

We recommend:

• Pair In My Family/En mi familia (dual language English/Spanish) with Family Pictures/Cuadros de familia, a read-aloud text exemplar for grades K–1.

• Pair Frederick Douglass: The Last Day of Slavery with a unit on the Civil War and African American history, especially in grades 6–8, when students read the autobiography of Douglass.

• Pair Summer of the Mariposas with Homer’s The Odyssey, a grade 9–10 text exemplar.
