SERVUS IN WIENAfter being hosted four times by the wonderful Kientaler Hof in the beautyful Swiss mountains the European Shiatsu Congress moved on. To downtown Vienna, Austria. And it moved with a cause. It is time for us Shiatsu practitioners to stand up. All arround the globe civilization disea-ses are exploding. This is a fact. So we need a new way of approaching health issues, we need a new perspective of understanding health, we need a new way of working with people.

In my opinion, Shiatsu has the potential to play a major role within the healthcare system and within our society.

Why? What must future therapies provide to face the challenges of our modern life, of a life on the fast lane, a digital life, a life of increasing insecurities and pressure? The therapy of the future has to suspend the separation between body and mind, or spirit respectively. It has to focus on the clients´ personal circumstances and has to offer a preventive as well as a healing aspect. Future therapists have to see things and think in a holistic way and act specifically and precisely. Shiatsu provides all these requirements. Is Shiatsu THE therapy of the future?

Does Shiatsu deserve to be deemed a serious and accepted therapy?

The 5th European Shiatsu Congress will deal with the development and future of Shiatsu and wants to point out what Shiatsu can do, and what it cannot, as well as where it can, or even has to, develop further. And it is time to share our insights and our work with the public. It is time for Shiatsu to stand up. Vienna, as a town with a long medical tradition, is the best playground for us to let our hands do the talking and show the world what we are able to do...

SHIATSU IS MUSICDear colleagues, members and friends. Coming together in Vienna from all over Europe, in order to jointly discuss the future of shiatsu – that in itself is a very promising dawn of the future. I am glad to see the ÖDS help towards this exchange committedly and I would like to thank all our members for making it possible by their personal contribution.

Thumb pressure knows no language barriers. And gets under the skin. Just like in music, in shiatsu we have developed a way in which all langu-ages communicate. In other words: we cultivate a kind of subcutaneous communication that, pushing boundaries, has beneficial effect.

Both the responsibility coming along with that and the chances involved must not be underestimated.

A treatment that describes the human being holistically as a body of mind, soul and spirit, shiatsu is naturally concerned with both the inner and the outer orientation we can assume in society, in times like these.

Tradition is all that we can carry out. Handing on and developing further what shiatsu is and can be.

We reside and work on a store of knowledge that must be recovered again and again – for future generations. Recording and sharing – holding together – our knowledge to date.

May many kinds of transborder effects and practices be reflected in this Europe-wide space of vibrancy; that’s my opening wish.

Welcome, yours sincerely

I Yin, You Yang: Interpreting Relationships the Chinese Way

250 pages, SoftcoverISBN: 9783903071377 € 14,80http://www.bacopa.at/page/md3000003_71377.html

BACOPAPUBLISHING HOUSE

I Yin, You Yang provides an introduction to the psychological aspects of traditional Chinese medicine. The author, in his trademark humorous and easily comprehensible style, mainly refers to the systems of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements respectively.

By presenting both systems with many pithy examples from every day life theory can be immediately put into practice. And the largest area of practice is our daily life with its impenetrable network of relation-ships. Not infrequently these relationships appear like Chinese gobbledygook. In other words: untangling the strands of this network is no mean feat but Mike Mandl tackles it with gusto.
