The issue has come out to be very good and informative. I really liked the readers’ choice award section for cosmetic but at the same time little disappointed and surprised that not even a single The Body Shop product made it to the awards.Savita Dhami, Marketing & PR Manager, The Body Shop

Your Beauty Awards issue is really interesting. This is the first time ever that I came across such a piece. It really gives us an insight what real women like to use. Despite all these brands most of girls still like to stick to the tried and tested products.Runu Roy, NGO Professional, Kolkata

Dear BEAUTY why don’t you introduce more product review sections. Why don’t you let us know what are actually in them, and what dermatologists say about the new products and ingredients. I love to try out new products but sometimes am scared to try them because there is no informed source to let us know what really works. Would really appreciate your contributions towards this.Nishi Verma, Homemaker, Delhi

Your magazine is quite comprehensive, and also liked the reader’s choice awards concept. We all have favourite products. You should make this a regular feature. Also you should invite more experts on your panel, and give us details on men’s skin care, and something for children as well. It would then be a complete grooming guide.Laila Shek, Marketing Professional, Mumbai

Do’s&Don’ts

DoAvoid afflicting your skin

to ups and downs of harsh temperature changes

throughout the day. This obviously strips the skin’s natural moisture leaving it sensitive, irritated, and

sometimes red. What you need is a skin potion that

soothes the irritation while returning the lost moisture

to the skin. We found a new solution in Lancome

Hydrazen Neurocalm, Rs 3,100. The cream

promises to do more than just soothe your skin. It’s

Neurocalm complex along with Madecassoside – a

botanical extract – work to de-stress skin, and supply it

with extra dose of moisture. The watery oil-free gel

texture gives your skin a cooling effect.

Don’t Pick on your zit or the pimple that suddenly raises its head just a day before that important event. However much the temptation, you will stand the chance of getting an irreparable scar. Instead seek a solution that will work to reduce redness, and the pain. Try the CLEAN & CLEAR Active Clear Acne Clearing Gel, Rs 99, with ingredients that target acne causing bacteria, and reduce the pimple redness, and swelling in 24 hours.

DoFight age spot, tan causing UVA/UVB rays with appropriate protection. To avoid your skin from looking dull, and patchy you need to save it from the oxidative stress that the rays put on the skin. You need proper shield, which not only prevents the rays from hitting the dermis, but also has antioxidants that block excess melanin production. The latest cream to offer all this and more is the Estee lauder Cyber White EX Extra Intensive UV Protector SPF 50/PA +++, Rs 2230. With an SPF 50 it offers a high, and broad spectrum coverage to the skin. Natural antioxidants like Mulberry Root Extract, Scutellaria Extract and Grape Extract work to block melanin production, and fight free radicals thus protecting the skin from discolouration.

Don’t Fret over limp locks that refuse to grow long. To get your hair swishing with health you need to take care of your scalp and strengthen your roots. When cleansing your hair ensure to use a shampoo that meant to add volume to the roots, and use a conditioner only on the lower half of your hair length. You will need a shampoo that adds strength to your hair shafts like the latest Sunsilk Lusciously Thick & Long Shampoo, Rs 129 - part of a range of shampoos created by global hair care experts. This particular version is created by international hair stylist Teddy Charles, which has keratine yoghurt complex for long-lasting volume with natural body and bounce.

BEAUTY | OCTOBER 200912

Don’tThink that just because the fine lines haven’t appeared yet, that your skin is in top condition. Dermatologists say that as you cross your

30th year, your skin’s natural regeneration

process slows down which makes it appear dull, and

slack. You need special potion that can help in

cell renewal, and give your face a better tone. One

such product just out in the market is L’Oreal Paris

Derma Genesis Day Cream SPF15, Rs 999.

Pro-xylane and Hyaluronic Acid in this water-based

moisturiser promote skin cell regeneration.

Hyaluronic acid is the best known moisturiser that

hydrates skin cells for more toned look. SPF 15 protect the skin from sun damage.

The formula is an oil-in-silicone water emulsion

which gives the skin a soft feel, and a silky appearance.

Don’tlet grime settle on your skin, as you slack off on your skin care. You will lose your glow, and the

freshness in your skin. Now if you are looking to wear

the season’s illuminated no makeup look, then your skin needs to be free from all the gunk. A good face

wash is the first step to that. Try the latest Nivea

Visage Refreshing Face Wash, Rs 99. The lotus

extracts and added vitamins in the gel wash helps clean the skin without stripping off the natural moisture. Retains hydration levels of the skin. So you get

squeaky clean, supple skin. It’s easy to use, and easy to

stash-in-the-purse design will ensure clean skin

always.

DoTry out the latest trend for dark nails inspired by the vampire cult classic ‘Twilight’ with Lancome Le Vernis Nail Polish in Indigo, Rs 1,200. This is part of the brand’s latest collection Declaring Indigo, where the creative director Aaron De Mey has created a bright palette using rich colours like indigo, red, and gold. The nail polish is a rich dark blue that will suit almost all complexions. One warning though – wear it on short nails, or else people might take you for a vampire.

DoKeep your lips soft and supple, so that you can wear this season’s favourite lip look – matte or stained lips. A dry matte lip colour looks awful on flaky pout. To get your smooth and soft apply some softening lip balm like Forest Essentials Lush Sweet Narangi Lip Balm, Rs 375. let its sweet almond oil, cocoa butter soak in, then rub a soft wash cloth over the lips to slough off flakes. Reapply and wait for five minutes before wearing your lipstick. The sweet lime essential oil gives off a whiff of freshness.

DoChoose a hydrating formula when picking up a foundation, especially if you have dry skin. Your foundation should have a balanced blend of water and oil to enable easy application. This will also ensure that the foundation does not settle into the flaky areas, making the skin look mask like. Canadian makeup brand Faces has introduced its Hydro Balance Foundation, Rs 499, which gives dry, prone to flakes skin a smooth appearance without weighing it down. It is water based with oil content, that glides on the skin for long lasting natural coverage.

You’ve got your heavy formal jewellery, all chunky and shining, and then you have your minimalist solitaires. So what do you do when rushing off to work you want a little something more than simple studs. You need your accent, and that’s what Delhi-based jewellery designer Neety Singh decided to do when she created her collection ‘MYOHO’ – a range with a hint of mysticism. Each piece is unique in creation as Singh has blended different materials going something as basic as wood to semi precious stones, to gold and diamond. In fact her line is a blend of Indian craftwork and western designs – not too traditional, not too modern. So we asked Neety to share her sartorial secrets when it comes to wearing jewellery...

Try beads instead. If you sport short hair, then avoid danglers 6. at work. It will be a mismatch.Try different neck pieces as it’s a big trend 7. today. You can wear just that with your simple shirt and trouser for an subtle glamour.

A skin illuminating bronzer, a massage oil, a chip resist polish, a travel friendly hair remover, and clearing scrub top charts this month5FAve

BeAUtY’s

YSL TRÉSOR D’AFRIQUE COLLECTOR SUN POWDER, RS 2,370We loved this amplified bronzer’s sculpting prowess. We got the most natural looking highlights, cheekbones, and a healthy glow. It beautifully works on all skin tones.

IRAYA AAROGYA TAILA, RS 250The fragrance might be strong but we loved the way this body oil relaxed our aching muscles. The blend of sesame oil, rice protein, turmeric, nut grass, mimosa, sarsaparilla, bergamot and vetiver left our skin soft, and mildly scented.

NEUTRO-GENA DEEP CLEAN GENTLE SCRUB, RS 95Our irritated skin did take to this scrub as fish to water. The soft round exfoliat-ing beads in the scrub did not scratch our skin, and removed the day’s grime. We used it daily without over scrubbing our face.

MORPHY RICHARDS EPITRAVEL EPILATOR, Rs 1495It’s so compact and fit nicely in our bag that we did not worry about last minute cleaning up unwanted hair. This handy little epilator with a narrow strip of nine tweezers let us clean up even facial hair. It’s battery operated so you don’t have to worry about plugging in.

L’OREAL RESIST & SHINE TITANIUM NAIL PAINT IN MERLOT RED, RS 400We were excited to wear this fire engine red that made us feel all flirty and über glam. The chip resist colour stayed on despite us tapping away at our keyboard. The titanium in the polish gives it that resistance, and goes on easily in single stroke.

AmritA raoOtherwise I prefer to keep it clean. I make sure I clean the makeup off at the end of the day.

Hair care regimen:I do my weekly head and scalp massage with oil. I do it with pure almond oil because it is very beneficial. I think it benefits me than any other natural ingredient.

Favourite makeup, skin and hair products:I like the makeup brands like Bobbie Brown and Dior. For skin, calamine lotion has been my magic potion. I apply it as a primer, under the base before the makeup. I also apply it at the end of the day after I wash off my makeup. For my hair I use Vivel shampoo and almond oil.

On bad hair days:I think all of us have bad hair days. For me a bad hair day would be when in a photo shoot my hair is too limp and product refuses to hold, and despite my stylist’s efforts no volumising product can give me volume. That would be

Her childhood:My childhood was peaceful, innocent and naughty. I’ve got my share of spanking from my Dad. But over all I think it was fun.

Meaning of looking good:looking good, I think, is synonymous with being attractive. looking good is something that is completely not achieved. It’s not an accomplishment, because you are born with it. So I think people who are good-looking should not count it as something to be proud of. In any case, I don’t find it pleasant when people judge other people

on the basis of their looks. looks does not have anything to do with the character and the personality of the person. So I would say good looking is something that is purely external. It’s nothing that you have gained by your mettle, rather it something you never had a choice about. You don’t really get to choose your looks, when you are born.

Skin care regimen:I keep my skin glowing by taking a lot of care, because my profession is such that I have makeup on my face most of the time.

She is beautiful, has a delicate charm, and a bit of old-fashioned sweetness. But that’s something Amrita Rao has decided to stow away, instead show her sultry, sensuous side. Pretty Ms Rao first hit the circuit when she auditioned for Fairever Face Cream. She was studying Psychology in Sophia College, Mumbai. Very soon she signed up to appear as the Cadbury Perk eating bride breaking rules of Karwa Chauth. By the time she appeared in the Bru Coffee ads, Amrita had started getting film offers. But she stalled that till she graduated from college. She saw passable success with Shahid Kapur in Ishq Vishq (2003), followed by the Farah Khan entertainer Main Hoon Na in 2004. But her delicate charm was captured best in Suraj Barjatiya’s Vivaah, which was a commercial success with Shahid Kapoor again. Recently Amrita was chosen as the Vivel Shampoo brand ambassador mainly because of her luscious locks. Here we catch up with Amrita, as she moves from being the cute girl next door to a glamourous babe in the world.

a bad hair day for me. I’ve had it, too. But I think a quick solution for a bad hair day is to wear a cap or a bandana scarf.

When skin feels bad:When my skin is looking or feeling bad, I go for a facial. But I avoid the instruments that pierce your skin for removing black heads and white heads. When I say a facial I mean just relaxing the facial muscles and maybe a mask or a face pack.

Favourite makeup trick:My favourite makeup trick would be to use a lip-liner, while applying a lipstick. It accentuates your lips. And a nice blush-on works well.

Makeup kit must have:lip-liner, lipstick.

Wellness and fitness mantra:It would be to alternate yoga with gym.

Relaxation technique:I like to relax and wind down by talking to friends, either on the phone or meeting them in person or by watching a very good film.

Spa visits:I can’t visit spas as often as I should be. Given the kind of stressful lives we are leading, once a month we should visit the spa. My favourite spa treatment would be a foot massage and a head massage.

Best kept beauty secret:Well, for me it has always been the calamine lotion. It has helped me prevent the bumps and rashes on my skin that I used to get due to too much makeup.

even tonedMost dusky girls tend to suffer from dual skin tone problem with the cheek area being lighter than the chin, jaw line or the

sides of the face. Putting on makeup in such a situation can be a tricky business. You will need to invest in foundations in two shades, one matching the colour of your jaw line and one a shade lighter. Mix the two, and apply it evenly, Blend carefully at the jaw line, down the neck, and the temple area. Then use a translucent powder to set the base. To get a glowing skin, dust

some iridescent powder on the cheeks, temples and the bridge of the nose.

Investing in gold is a good idea. The sensex loves it and so do we. A bit of yellow gold on the lids or

a dirty gold on the lips can get your stocks soaring.

by Priyanka Bhattacharya

GilteDGeD

It is a hue that starts doing the rounds as the season turns cooler, and our celebration garbs come out. Gold is a colour that we Indian love and why not? It is a shade that complements our skin tone – fairest to the duskiest – beautifully. Makeup artists in India love to highlight the face, shoulders, décolleté etc especially as you hit the festive party, and wedding circuit.

While too much of gold in your coffers is good news, but too much of it on your skin is definitely criminal. Subtlety is the key. Play with various texture and colours of gold – you can go matte or shimmery, clean or dirty, yellow or bronze gold.

BEAUTY | OCTOBER 200920

One of the easiest ways to brighten up your complexion – a dash of pearly gold blush on the apple of your cheeks. This season too you can play up your complexion with this shade. To add more contour to your face blend in a matte bronze gold blush in the hollow of your cheeks. Keep it elegant by avoiding gold anywhere else. Keep eyes neutral, and lips shaded with a matte brown or taupe lipstick.

Gilded lips can kill your complexion if not worn with caution. Instead of a yellow gold hue choose a lipstick that has a darker bronze hint to it. Another way to wear a gold lipper is to apply a sheer peach or pink lipstick, and then dabbing a gold lipgloss over it.

Gold best looks on the lids where it can make your eyes look vibrant without looking too obvious. For just a subtle glow take a sheer gold shadow and apply on your upper lid

till just above the crease, and extend it slightly beyond the outer corner. Then apply the shadow on the lower lid close to the lashes. Then draw the upper and lower lash line with a thin dark liner – preferably brown or bronze. Use two coats of mascara to open up the eyes. This is a great day look. Give a brighter turn to the gilt-lidded style by applying a yellow gold shadow on the centre of your upper

lashes till just above the crease. Blend in a circular motion and keep inside the outer corner of your eyes. For the smoky look apply an antique gold shadow all over the lid till the crease, then blend in a bronze shadow from the crease to the outer corner, extending it slightly. line the lower lashes with a bronze liner. Keep rest of the face pretty low key with a soft pink or nude gloss.

BOXTLAK-BL“unique anti-ageing liquid crystal cream”

Pro

Are you tired of looking older than you are or feel? Do lines and wrinkles drag you down? If so, there is good news! To Revitalize your skin and to provide you youthful looking complexion Shalaks Pharmaceutical introduces, the BOXTLAK-BL; a unique anti-ageing liquid crystal structure cream with peptide that mimic skin’s own defense mechanism.

Well...we all are faced with wrinkles no matter how hard we hope to never see them. Wrinkle is the furrow in the skin & it is a natural process developed during ageing.

Though wrinkles are a part and parcel of the ageing process, premature wrinkles are a cause of concern for many. Premature wrinkles may be caused by deficiency of nutritional components in the different tissues, cellular destruction through excessive sun exposure.

Ageing skin results from the passage of time, over

exposure to the sun that destroy the cellular ability to reproduce, lack of proper caring while young, health problem & imbalance hormones. One of the most striking signs of skin ageing is the increased wrinkling on the face, neck and area around the eyes. Facial lines, wrinkles, age related neck degeneration, crow’s feet & laughing lines are the other indications for ageing wrinkle skin.

Now …no need to go for the injections & painful treatments because BOxTlAK offering you the effective, non-invasive, less cost & painless treatments. It also helps lines & wrinkles less noticeable, smoothing out furrows & helps optimize skin’s elasticity and hydration.

The effectiveness of anti-wrinkle creams depends in part on the active ingredient or ingredients. Here are some of the specially formulated Ingredients that BOxTlAK contains;

BoNT-L Peptide is a concentrated formula with Palmitoyl Hexapeptide, a potent peptide which is known for its anti-ageing effects, having “Botulinum Toxin-A” like activity.

Olive Leaf Extract having antioxidant properties help protect the body from the continuous onslaught of free radicals.

Centella asiatica (Gotu kola) , an Indian Herb having modulating properties on the development and metabolism of connective tissue & improve the synthesis of collagen.

Allantoin with its healing, moisturizing, soothing, anti-irritating and keratolytic action, benefits the skin texture.

Alpha Lipoic Acid is one the powerful anti-oxidants protecting against free radical which is primary cause of premature ageing

Plump is a bad word, but not when it is used to describe the skin. The plumper the skin cells, the better it is for your skin’s appearance. Sadly, the cells thin out under the top layer making it less elastic. The fragile your skin gets, more lined it looks – loss of moisture making it appear dull. To retain moisture, and sebum balance, our skin naturally produces hyaluronic acid – sustains the skin’s texture. But as you age, expose your skin to sun, or your hormones play hooky, the hyaluronic acid balance in your skin goes topsy turvy. The sebum producing glands start drying up. The result; dry, loose skin that has lost its glow – in turn its youthfulness. You may take pride in being a mature 35, but your skin need not show that maturity.

Visible aging starts at the age of 25-30 when the skin cell renewal slows down. Between the ages of 30 and 35, expression lines become more prominent as collagen and elastin start to break down. Static lines begin to appear around 35-40 years. Deeper lines begin to etch around the mouth and eyes, and furrows appear on the forehead. Skin becomes noticeably drier. So by the time you reach your 40’s skin reaches a pretty high level of fragility. So it is a good idea to look into ways of diminishing the appearance by the time you reach your 30’s.

Juvederm, the latest in dermal fillers to come to India, is smooth consistency gel made up of hyaluronic acid. Dr Stefania Roberts, who is a trained Juverderm professional, stresses that this gel is better than most available in the market. “We have a number of hyaluronic acids in the market. The hyaluronic acid fillers currently available in the market are gritty and granular in texture. Juvederm gives a smoother texture and it’s got a more natural feel about it. It functions for more than cleansing tissues. It’s a natural product. Juvederm consists of a smooth consistency gel that flows easily into the skin for a smooth, natural look and feel different from the ones currently available in the market,” she explains. What makes this brand stand out is the longevity of the effect. Juverderm keeps your skin smooth, and line-free for up to 12 months. Doctors who use it on patients claim that with continuous

use, patients will see the effect remaining longer and longer as time goes by. “Since it mimics body’s natural hyaluronic acid, so it helps in regeneration, which means better looking skin for longer. As you keep doing this treatment the duration of the effect gets longer and longer over time,” she says.

However there is one caveat. You have to sign up with a trained cosmetic dermatologist for this treatment. In case your doctor is an amater with this, then you might face the problem of over correction. Results are totally depended on doctor’s understanding of your skin, anatomy and aging process. Always follow up with your doc, if you feel something amiss.

With Juvederm you can correct mistakes. “First of all it is not permanent, which means that it is fully absorbed by the body eventually. For example if a little more of product is put on one side of the lip than the other then your doctor can actually dissolve that with the help of an enzyme, which is the eraser. You won’t feel it but it is there. But you can totally get rid of it before the 12 months duration. This happens very rarely. I’ve used the eraser on less than 0.5 % of the patients. Rightly done, you won’t feel that something has been done. Not rightly done, it’s obvious that something has been done. We want to move away from that. We just want the patient to look good. You should not be able to guess. You should just look good,” she says.

Fill the LinesGo ahead squint at the PC screen as

much as you like, for help is at hand. In the form of dermal fillers that is - those little molecules of hyaluronic acid, which can be injected into the fine lines to give your skin a plumper appearance. Giving an example of how fillers work, Dr Stefania Roberts, Member of Advisory Board For Juvederm (the dermal filler brand from Allergan) says, “To give a parallel – it is like applying putty in the hole in a wall. It is the same concept. If there is a groove that we want to erase in the skin, we can put fillers in there for the skin to look smoother. And we can utilize the fillers in there to give a nice shape to the face

and revolumize it.” Dermal fillers are hyaluronic acid based product that is injected into a patient’s trouble areas to restore what time has taken away.

Fillers can either be permanent or non-permanent. Permanent fillers are for a long period of time, but it can make the face appear abnormal. So slowly there is a shift away from permanent fillers. The most popular if them all is collagen. It was the gold standard in the 80’s. It was non-resorbable which meant very unexpected and artificial results

“If you would see in the 1960s, ‘70s or ‘80s, we have cases where the patient’s jaws looked fat and out of proportion to the rest of the face. We

want the face to look quite natural. So collagen has been superseded worldwide by hyaluronic acid - 70 percent of our body and 50 percent of our skin has hyaluronic acid. This non-permanent filler is revertible and they can completely go away. This means that we can fill the lines based on the skin’s actual aging condition. This also gives a very natural look,” adds Dr Roberts.

Add Extra OomphWhile dermal fillers are a must for

furrowed skin, they can also be used on younger skin – as young as 25 – to enhance the natural glow, making it appear translucent and luminous. There are options like fraxel or fractional

laser treatments to even out skin tone, Botox to remove frown lines. However dermal fillers can really make your skin appear young and supple. The difference between Botox and dermal fillers is that Botox is a purified protein that is injected into muscles, and Filler is a an acid that mimics skin’s natural acid. The results of botox are not seen immediately. It takes 4-5 days to 2 weeks to kick in and it relaxes the muscles. The effect of fillers is seen as soon as they are injected into the skin.

According to Dr Roberts there is no specific time in the life of an individual for using fillers on the skin. It all boils down to the condition of your skin. In fact younger people even those with great skin can seek a filler treatment

to enhance their features – getting cheekbones, or lifting the brows. The ones with older skin obviously need dermal fillers to restore what time has taken away. Dermal fillers are beneficial in many ways. She explains, “What we are trying to do here is to volumize the face, so that the beauty is enhanced. We don’t want the patient to look like a caricature. I think we just need to look at the Hollywood celebrities and say that’s not right. We will not follow what they did. What we are doing is that we are just enhancing what you already have. You go to the beautician to get your brow shaped. What we are doing is give the brow a little bit of curvature, with Juvederm. This is a little more medical and it makes people feel

better. And you know as we age, we want to look better and age gracefully.”

Going For a SessionDr Roberts compares the treatment

to a chemical peel, where the skin’s texture is first judged. Based on the results the amount of filler is prescribed. In fact when you are getting a filler treatment ensure to work with your cosmetic dermatologist all the way – cooperate by answering about your lifestyle as openly as possible.

The procedure itself is pretty simple. “In terms of prepping we apply Chlor-hexadine, an anti-septic solution on the skin before giving the injections. That is what we do before doing any kind

BEAUTY | OCTOBER 2009 29

of procedure. Then we mark the area, where we need to do the procedure. And then apply the anaesthetic cream and then the injections. The pain factor is low due to the local anaesthesia we use. You might need few injections to correct the area,” she informs.

A whole lot of goodTaking dermal filler treatment is pretty

much personal decision. According to Dr Roberts, going for dermal filler treatment is similar to getting your hair, your manicure or your pedicure done. “You try to cut down years by using beauty product. Is it mandatory? No. It is entirely your decision. You can take the example of Sophia loren, who’s

had fillers done and looks really good in her 70s. As opposed to Bridget Arden, who chose not to have it done. Do you need to do it? No. Do you have a choice to do it? Yes. And what’s out there? Dermatology of cosmetic medicine is exploding and people want to look better.”

Dermal fillers work on the prime beauty need- keeping the skin looking good. You feel beautiful and confident when your skin glows. “I have found that patients do better socially and at work after a filler treatment. So, there is a direct co-relation between looking good, feeling good and projecting that to the rest of the world,” says the doctor.

Pinnedto Perfection

Didn’t think that plain old bobby pins could become a key accessory? Well they are now. These easy to access and use hair grips can look great when used in numbers to hold a style. Try picking up ones in different colours, or in metallic hue. If nothing plain black ones will also do. Can’t do an elaborate do with this? Simply use five to six pins together on the side to hold your hair.

Buns are classic up dos. Season after season they remain popular albeit in different forms. Right now wear your sleeked, polished, and with lots of élan.

by Ruby Chakraborty

Never let it be said that buns are for matrons, librarians, or old ladies. It is as young and fresh as it can get that keep coming up on the ramp year after year. last time round the buns were low, teased, and had lots of texture. In fact it is one of easiest styles to wear to fight the frizzies or to hide a failed styling attempt. A quick twisting of the low ponytail around the base and pinned was all you needed to do. But that’s changed now. For a more sophisticated turn the buns have gone way up on the head. Not a hair is out of place. You will need to arm yourself with light hold gel, shine spray, and mousse, definitely pins.

BEAUTY | OCTOBER 200932

This is a classic style that is more sleek, and higher on the head than ever. To get the look smooth some light hold gel through the top part of your head. Then pull your hair into a high ponytail almost on the top of your head, and twist it into a bun. You can either tease the bun for a more textured look, or wrap a hair wrap (like shown here) around the bun for a sleek look. Since this is an ultra smooth style, keep your makeup sophisticated, and highlight your lips with a bright lipstick, and glowing skin.

Give a softer look to your top knot by lacing

in some braids to the knot. Start by spraying some smoothing spray into the strands; use a

straightening iron to iron out the kinks. Then divide your hair at the top your head into four sections. Weave in braids close to

the scalp till you reach the top of your head;

braid two longer plats at the side of your head

just above the ears. Then pull up your tresses into a ponytail and roll it loosely

to create a fan like bun on top. Pin, and then wrap

the braids at side around the base of the bun.

Top Knot

BEAUTY | OCTOBER 2009 33

This is a sophisticated take on top knot. It can be worn to formal events, or even by the bride who is dressing in a traditional garb. This kind of style can hold the head cover very firmly, giving you a slimmer silhouette. This is like a top knot, but it is slightly lower at the back. Roll and twist the ponytail tightly around the base to create a Danish bun like structure, fix it. Then attach a small hair switch (smaller bun) on top of the cinnabun to get a Grecian style.

Double Cinnabun

BEAUTY | OCTOBER 200934

It is one of the easiest buns to pull off. Simply sleek back hair using as smoothing spray. Then take the hair to one side of the head at the back – higher than the nape, in the middle. Make a ponytail and then start rolling your hair into a pipe and take it across the head, pinning the roll as you go. Then finish off at the base of the ponytail by tucking in the ends securely with pins.

Straight hair may seem simple, but keeping it shiny and smooth is tricky business. For the straight talk on straight hair, here are the blunt basics.

by Mansi Bhatt

stRAiGht strAnDsPokertRUth About

Most of you girls have a fetish for straight silken strands. For that you go to no ends – hair rebonding, ironing, blow-drying. You do get straight hair, but the shine vanishes even as you go swishing your tresses. That’s because

there are four essential truths that you overlook.

BEAUTY | OCTOBER 200936

ShampooingTo keep straight hair in line, •gently brush or finger-comb your hair before getting into the shower.

When washing your hair, treat •it delicately. Gently massage in shampoo starting at the roots—not the ends—and working down. Never pile hair on top of your head.

Wash with warm, but not •hot, water. Make sure to rinse thoroughly to help prevent residue buildup, which can make hair flat. Use a clarifying shampoo once a week to help remove unwanted residue for a squeaky-clean start.

For everyday use, wash with •creamy smoothening shampoo to keep your straight hair defined and disciplined.

ConditioningConditioner is key to creating •shine and preserving hair health. Think of it as your personal defender against damage.

Conditioner helps to lay the hair •cuticles flat thus reflecting more light, which makes the hair look shiny.

Make sure to rinse well, because •buildup will put a dull damper on your style.

If it is volume you want, •condition only the middle and ends of your hair where it’s most susceptible to damage. If you’re looking for some shine, condition the entire strand.

If you have very fine hair, and •fear it getting weighed down, then use a leave in variety from the middle to the tip of your strands. Avoid getting it to the roots, that can really flatten your straight hair.

MaintenanceTo keep your style straight day-•to-day, never use your brush on wet hair. It can pull and break hair leaving it frizzy and dull. A wide-toothed comb is the best way to detangle and distribute styling products when hair is wet.

Always use a thermal protection •serum –most hair serums work like that - on your strands before using a blow-dryer or a straightening iron.

To keep hair healthy, limit your •use of styling tools. When you need to use a heated appliance, use it on a low setting whenever possible to help prevent excessive damage.

StylingIf your hair is looking a little •dull, try a small amount of smoothening conditioner. It will give your hair smoothness and shine. Condition the entire strand, working up from tips to roots.

After gently toweling off hair to •remove excess moisture, apply an anti-frizz serum to hair, again working through from tips to roots. It will tame the flyaways.

Next, blow-dry hair until it is •half dry. Always keep the angle of the dryer downwards to avoid cuticles from puffing up.

Divide into sections using hair •clips to keep it separated. Reduce the heat to cooler setting and attach a nozzle to blow dry each section separately with a flat paddle brush, starting from the roots and following the brush down, keeping hair taut. The brush will aid in keeping hair straight as you dry, and the cooler air will help lock in the style.

When hair is completely dry, use •a flat iron to polish the look. Choose a ceramic iron—it evenly distributes heat to help reduce damaging hot spots. look for one with a 3-inch paddle, which works well for most hair lengths.

Finish off with a spritz of shine •hairspray with a flexible hold to keep your smooth look in place for hours.

So read on as we reveal the secret behind great looking straight hair:

Split ends, broken strands, hair that doesn’t grow are all signs of stressed out tress. Tresspert Thomas J Taw explains the ins and outs of great hair and how to get it.by By Gayatri T Rao.

“The array of techniques used and the products that are prescribed to your hair keep it in optimum condition, maintain shine and manageability and keep your hair feeling like you have always wanted it to. The haircut should be customized to suit your hair texture and the colour should work with your own skin tone and eye shades. This philosophy, executed with care and attention to detail, ensures an ever growing loyal following,” says Thomas J Taw, damaged hair care expert, consultant Sunsilk, and founder of london-based salon Bobsoho

Trained by Italian mentors, Tom Taw, as he is usually called, has worked in Italy and European countries. He is the director/founder of Bobsoho salon where he continues to develop and nurture his own special brand of hairdressing. For him hair is a thing of natural beauty rather than a thing to conceal it as an unmanageable and high manageable and high maintenance carbuncle. According to him condition is the key to beautiful hair. His whole career has been focused on reversing damaged hair. His knowledge and expertise for restoring and recovering dry or damaged hair is recognized within the industry and by his clients alike.

Taw’s main passion is in Bobsoho, where he makes your experience of a good haircut, a great one. He tell us about damaged hair and how to make it good:

Definition of damaged hair: Most essential and important part of one’s appearance, healthy, good-looking hair is tough working for. Damaged hair takes away an individual’s good looks from them. Simply said, a hair is a chain of proteins called keratins covered by a cuticle, a protective layer, which appears shiny. Obviously the shine in your hair is from the cuticle and damaged cuticle translates into lifeless looking, damaged hair. The indications of damage are the cuticle becoming rough, chipped or cracked. The cuticle can even wear off. Another function of the cuticle is to prevent water loss. loss of moisture will have the same results as when a plant is deprived of water.

How does hair get damaged: Hair gets damaged mostly in two ways – mechanical damage and chemical damage. Mechanical damage occurs due to too much heat, bad maintenance, excessive straightening, excessive relaxing and combing hair too hard when wet. Blow-drying, curling or straightening hair with hair iron or using hair rollers subjects our tresses to heat, too. On the other hand, chemical damage results from excessive colouring and excessive perming of hair. Ultra violet rays of the sun, chemicals and a poor diet are also reasons behind the splitting of our beauty indicators. Keep your hair wet for long only goes on to damage the hair.

Characteristics of Indian hair type: I have had lots of chance to examine

Indian hair types since there are a lot of Indians in the UK where I come from. Indian hair tends to be a little bit thicker, a little bit wavier and quite strong but can tend to be quite dry. It is naturally wavy or curly and more likely to become damaged naturally. Symptoms of damage are loss of shine, easy tangling and dry texture and it can also become unmanageable.

How to prevent hair damage: Prevention is better than cure. By avoiding the conditions and treatments harmful to hair, you can also have flowing, glossy, long and lovely locks. However, there are some conditions which cannot be avoided. Though blow-drying is better than hair ironing, you have to avoid blow-drying your hair to complete loss of moisture. Some moisture should be left on to be taken care of naturally. After a hair wash, condition your hair to cause it less harm while brushing since the process makes it less entangled. A protein rich diet not only keeps the whole body healthy but also beautifies your hair with a healthy glow.

Tips for sensitized strands: Go for a regular treatment program. There is a need to use products containing protein and moisture. You also need to use conditioner after wash. Hair also requires intensive treatment at least once a week.

Working with Sunsilk for stressed tress: We are working on a damage reconstruction program designed to help repair protein levels of the cuticle of hair which makes the hair stronger, smoother and healthier. I have to put my expertise in this area of dry and damaged hair. These are a range of products co-created with Sunsilk, which already has a cutting edge technology. To create a product that we believe is the best in the world. Hair anyway contains the same ingredients universally. It will work for Indian women also, because the products have been designed to improve and restructure damaged hair, wherever you live in the world. And yes, these products will work on all kinds of hair.

stretch itStart your day with a good stretch as you get out of bed. It is

one of the best ways to warm up the muscles, and relieve stress. An early morning stretch helps bring flexibility, and wake up the mind and body. Mid afternoon stretch while sitting at your work desk can take away muscles knots and kinks in the neck. It also relaxes the mind. Remember to do warm up stretch before your exercise routine, and a cool down stretch after it to keep your joints, and muscles flexible and moving.

How muchis enough

Hitting the gym daily for an hour may not be really necessary; even 20 minutes of yoga can get looking good. Everyone needs to do it differently when it comes to weightloss.

You need to sweat it out 45 minutes per day just to stay fit, while your friend looks svelte exercising for 20 minutes every alternate day. It all actually boils down to your metabolism and your dietary habits. Doctors and fitness experts do indicate that at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week is a good number that can keep you fit and away from major health risks. But in reality

things might just be a little bit different. Poor diet and physical inactivity, resulting in an energy imbalance (more calories consumed than expended), are the most important factors contributing to the increase in weight in us.

What really decides your actual amount of exercise is your natural propensity to gain weight. So you can be doing the 30 minutes routine every week, but you still find it hard to lose weight. That’s when you will need to

up the ante. You will need to add more.

BEAUTY | OCTOBER 200942

Beyond the 30 Minute Threshold

It’s not like we haven’t heard it before: Exercise is an essential part of the health equation, and 30 minutes a day is where it begins. There is enormous scientific information to support this. Meeting the 30-minute threshold will help a person maintain a healthy weight and reap health benefits like lowering the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and hypertension.

From there, the amount of physical activity a person needs climbs, depending on his weight status. For those who are following the 30-minute guideline and gaining weight anyway, they may need as much as 60 minutes a day to prevent weight gain. And at the high end of the spectrum is 90 minutes of exercise every day.

The 90-minute recommendation is for people who were significantly overweight, but managed to lose a substantial amount of weight, and seek to maintain that weight loss in the long term. In fact studies show that people who need to maintain their weight loss, they will have to keep their physical activity levels high for an extended period.

Agreed that even doing 30 minutes daily is a tough call. But if you want to remain healthy and keep that extra flab at bay then staying with the stopwatch is the need.

Is thrice a week enough?

Not so it seems. According to health guidelines released in the US in 2005 explains that you need more than moderate physical activity to remain healthy, slim, and fit. In fact if we are to follow the examples of our non-technology using ancestors; they did more than 90 minutes of physical activity, and had strong bodies. Even today the farming class in the country have more toned body than the city slickers.

So we actually need to accumulate even more physical activity if we want to effectively control weight. According to the American health

guidelines; you will need to strive to get in as much physical activity as you can on most days: 30 minutes a day if you’re a person of normal body weight and you just want the health benefits of being physically active, 60 minutes if you want to control your weight, and 90 minutes if you want to lose and sustain.

Making Room for Exercise

So we need to make time to exercise and find a way to work the recommended amount of physical activity into a busy schedule, whether its 30 minutes or 90. The good news: you can do it in bits and pieces.

“The reason is that the effects of exercise are cumulative. It doesn’t have to be done all at once. It’s like loose change in your pocket -- it all adds up at the end of the day and meets the threshold. So while you don’t need to spend hours at the gym every day, you do have to get the heart pumping.

Whatever activity it is, you need to move your body to the degree that it’s making you breathe faster or harder.

But what happens if you miss a day? Theoretically, you can’t make up for lost time if you miss a day of exercise. But in reality, energy balance means that if you burn more calories on the other days, you will in a sense make up for it. But the bigger problem for most of us is falling off the exercise wagon, and never getting back on.

So when you miss a day, don’t try to pack more into your next workout so that you feel so overwhelmed that you never exercise again. At the very least, squeeze some push-ups or sit-ups in at the end of the day, and get back into your routine the next.

So when it comes to the recommendation of 30-90 minutes of physical activity on most days -- can it possibly be done? Yes, if you make it a priority.

BEAUTY | OCTOBER 2009 43

Here are some suggestions for becoming physically active:

Start by remembering that physical activity doesn’t •always mean the dreaded “e” word: exercise. Encourage yourself to be physically active by doing things you actually enjoy. Make a list of things you like to do that are active, and find ways to fit them in.”

Make it a group event. Take a walk with your family, go •for a walk with friends at lunch, take your kids to the park and play with them instead of sitting on the bench.

Go for the tried and true. Take the stairs instead of the •elevator, and park your car further away from the office. These are small ways to incorporate regular physical activity into your daily routine that add up over the course of the day.

Find new things to do. Try swimming, hiking, cycling, •dancing -- something new and different. There are so many things that are physically active that are fun, so make it a priority to do those things. It’s good for your physical and mental well-being.

Find a support system, and reward yourself. You are •more likely to succeed with adopting increased physical activity if they build good social support around the activity. Be active with a family member or a friend, and set up a reward system together so when you achieve something, like being active on 90% of the days you agree to, go to the movies or go out for a healthy dinner.

Start with 30. Meet that 30-minute guideline and see •if there is a problem with weight management. lots of people who are not meeting that 30-minute guideline and work up to it will find that their weight will stabilize or they may lose weight. From there, you can determine whether the 60- or 90-minute recommendation is right for you.

If you meet the 30-minute guideline consistently for an extended period and gain weight anyway, you are one of the people who needs more than that to maintain energy balance. This all comes down to the individual, and how they act on the guidelines. But whatever be your number, keep in mid this goal: Balance energy and weight status, make it fun and meet your goals in a way you enjoy.

Working in the Workouts

BEAUTY | OCTOBER 200944

You are really careful about every aspect of your health. You brave the dentist’s chair every six months to keep your pearlies in top shape. So it must have been surprising when you felt that twinge at the back of your teeth as you sipped cold drink. The fault is not really yours. By the time you reach your 35th year, your teeth starts aging – meaning teeth start looking more yellow, gums get thinner, and enamel thins out leading to sensitised teeth. According to dentists, your 45th year can mark many changes in your dental structure by

making the teeth appear longer and larger as gums recede, and the shape of the jaw loosens.

In fact with age, many tooth problems start arising. Explaining the signs, dentist Dr. Mukul Dabholkar of Mumbai-based International Centre For Dental Care says, “However regularly you brush tartar is formed on everybody’s teeth. The first thing that happens is the gums or the gingiva gets inflamed and gingivitis occurs. The swollen portions become bigger catchment areas for dirt and food particles. The gums recede

due to pressure from the tartar. From there gingivitis progresses to Periodontitis, where the gums, the surrounding structures and the bone get inflamed. Then you get loss of gum tissue. You get black coloured triangular areas at the junction of gums and the teeth, which look like that when you are aged. As you grow older, the gums shrink. The teeth get brittle. The nerves inside the teeth get smaller. The gums get more fragile. The main dental worries are gum disease, yellowing teeth, gaps forming in teeth, teeth jutting out

and loss of teeth.”

As you grow older, your mouth also tends to get drier, which means less production of saliva – an important thing that keeps the teeth and gums clean. This also gives rise to oral cavity problems. In fact dentists say that it is a good idea to visit your dentist at least twice or thrice a year after you cross your 30’s. Besides natural aging process, reasons like not brushing teeth well, not massaging the gum well, tartar build-up, and excessive acidity on the mouth can also cause teeth to decay or get affected.

In fact you should rush to your dentist the moment you notice swollen or bleeding gums, foul smell in the mouth, ulcers, or loose teeth. Early detection and treatment of oral health problems can ensure a lifetime of good oral health.

On the dentist’s chair

Dr Dabholkar insists that you don’t have to live with these conditions. “The teeth jutting out can be corrected in a similar way as done in a young adult. Today, bracing even in a 60 year old elderly person can also be done provided the bone condition is good. Previously, bracing could be done only from the outside. Now-a-days, we can do bracing from the inside. The length of the teeth can be covered up by detachable party gums. Besides that it is possible to restore the vertical relationship of the face. It is also possible to bring the lower jaw to the original position.”

With cosmetic dentistry dentists today can take 10-15 years off the face. With cosmetic dentistry you can remove the black triangles, yellowness, and change asymmetry, protrusion of the teeth and any parameters that are missing can be corrected. “There are 33 parameters to a perfect smile. Among them, is mentioned a specific length to breadth proportion. If you want to make a person look younger, you can increase the length of the upper teeth and

reduce the length of the lower teeth, within the normal parameters. Even if you lose teeth for some reason, they can be replaced by non-expensive methods. When we do these cosmetic dentistry treatments, we see a drastic change in a person’s self esteem,” he adds.

Getting the falsiesIt is quite common to lose a teeth or two post 35.

You are more prone to it if you have a history of tooth problems in your earlier years. Now you don’t have to go gap-toothed. Today doctors offer such lovely dentures that can mimic your real set wonderfully. You can try the

partial denture when you lose one or more teeth. Fixed dentures are also available. When a single tooth or more are missing, you can take support of the teeth on either side and give fixed dentures known as bridges. Bridges can come in various qualities. “In addition to these, without touching the teeth on either side of the space of a lost tooth, without taking their support, artificial roots called implants can be made within the bone and a cap, resembling a natural tooth, can be put on top,” explains Dr Dhabolkar. The removable dentures are not expensive. The bridges are more expensive and the implants are the costliest. There are different qualities in dentures, bridges and implants.

“The removable dentures have to be washed with soap and water everyday after every meal. Never wear them at night. Soak them in water with oxygen-releasing tablets and powders available with the chemists, at night. This is done

to remove the debris and give it a fresh taste. Never use a tooth brush on them, in case you scratch them. For fixed bridges regular cleaning with the dentist is recommended because it keeps the teeth and the gums healthy. Regular visits to the dentist increase the life of your fixed dentures and implants. Once people get dentures the gums can get damaged further, which can be avoided. As you grow older, the gums shrink. So every 3-4 years you have to change the dentures or tighten and realign them,” Dr. Mukul Dabholkar enlightens.

can act better, so that your teeth are protected.

9 The smallest cavities should be filled immediately, so that the problem does not get aggravated.

10 Always insist on a tooth coloured metal-free composite filling since they are much superior. Never go for a silver filling, which is actually an amalgam of silver and the mercury starts slowly poisoning you.

11 The teeth except the wisdom teeth support each other. If you remove a single tooth, the shape and position of the surrounding teeth change in the next 15 years. So, it is imperative that you do not lose the tooth and save the tooth by root canal treatment.

12 Edentulous ridges must be regularly massaged with finger at the time of cleaning the mouth.

13 Tongue should be cleaned thoroughly with a tongue cleaner.

14 If proper care is taken, one can have healthy teeth and gums throughout the life span of the individual.

5 Using dental floss and proxabrush keeps space between teeth clean so that swelling of the gums and tooth decay can be avoided.

6 Whitening of teeth or bleaching is useful, not only to whiten the teeth but also to tighten gums. This can be done once in 3-4 years. There are maintenance whiteners also available, which can be used in the interim. Never use any teeth whitener off the shelf. Unless it is done under the supervision of a doctor and done scientifically, it will not work properly.

7 Never brush harder to remove the yellowness of teeth. It will only scratch off the enamel. Due to the hard brushing the gums also get more irritated and are pushed away. They also cause man made cavities called Class 5 cavities.

8 However much you brush, tartar is formed in everybody’s teeth and to avoid complications, a cleaning session should be taken up with your dentist every 6 months. This should start at an early age. The cleaning removes the tartar, the polish removes the plaque and the pellicle and then the fluoride

1 The protection of teeth should start from childhood. If a person has not taken care of their teeth as a young person, it is never too late.

2 Brush twice a day. Brushing at night is more important than brushing in the morning.

3 The toothpaste from a multinational company is best. There are a lot of tooth powders in the market and some people use salt. Both are gritty and scratch and damage the enamel of the tooth and lacerate the gums. The toothpaste you use should have an optimum amount of fluoride in it, since it is good for not only caries protection but also your health. Statistics say that 30 % of the toothpaste used while brushing is ingested by even the adults! Too much or too little of fluoride is bad. When fluoride comes in contact with the enamel of the tooth, it forms flour apatite. This is a protective layer, which makes the tooth further resistant to tooth decay.

4 Use an electric toothbrush, so that the fluoride absorption efficiency is increased.

Why did The Body Shop decide to work on this project with ECPAT?The Body Shop as a part of its commitment towards better society seeks issues that it can support and highlight to improve the state of such issues. With recent news about how children are getting abused and exploited, we realised that this is an issue that really needs global attention. So we partnered with ECPAT – it works towards reducing child exploitation – to expose this issue and create better awareness amongst nations. We needed to reveal the true picture of the full extent of the sex trafficking of children and young people. We wanted to help find a solution to this terrible exploitation of the young and vulnerable. We believe there is hope and that with public support and effort we can effect change. This campaign with ECPAT enables each of us to inspire real change on an issue which, until now, has been largely hidden from the world.

What did the study find?

The results we found were really shocking. One of the key reasons for increase in child trafficking is the

recession and the drop in income amongst families. Deterioration in the living conditions of entire households can induce children and young people to abandon school in order to contribute to the family income, exposing them to harmful situations that lead to their being sexually exploited in prostitution, child pornography and in other forms. Due to poverty situations, the traffickers also take advantage of the children, and these kids have really little power to fight back and escape. This is not only encouraging people who pay for sex, but also paedophiles. This also leaves these children scarred for life. So our main aim is to bring about awareness, and encourage people to join this campaign so that the vulnerable group can see a better future.

How will The Body Shop help in creating awareness?

Our long term goal is to protect the children who are vulnerable to this. It is critical for us to raise the profile of the issue through posters, promotions. In fact we are using our global presence in more than 60 countries to support the NGOs working to bring an end to

the global trade in children and young people for sexual purposes. All our stores will bring the Stop Sex Trafficking of Children & Young People campaign issue to public attention through posters, and promotional matter. We have a special product like Soft Hands Kind Heart Hand Cream, proceeds from which will go to fund this cause. In fact our customers can participate and make a difference by buying this product. We create special products for every one of our campaigns.

What is your commitment to the issue?

We have few important goals like to create community-based programmes to stop this issue, to get the international legal standards in place to protect the vulnerable segment, and ensure to encourage local governments to create special services to help the children who are victims of this. So over the next three years we will work with ECPAT and its local partners to achieve the changes I have stated.

It feels good when a beauty product really delivers results. It feels even better when you know that your cream is delivering more than just soft skin – helping someone somewhere in the world. The Body Shop’s new hand cream does that. The profits from the sales go to raise

awareness about child prostitution, and child trafficking for sexual purposes. Christopher Davis, International Campaigns Director for The Body Shop talks to Priyanka Bhattacharya about

Garnier with its latest innovation is ready to help you wipe away signs of aging even before they set in.by Priyanka Bhattacharya

AGeAway lift

was meant to deal with fine lines and crow’s feet. But the cream did not offer solution for dullness or dark spots. That is why Garnier decided to develop a product that will fill in the gaps. “We needed to offer something totally different to our customers in terms of anti-aging. So we evolved the anti-wrinkle solution, and added ingredients that would also prevent skin darkening, and dullness,” she adds.

The rangeUnlike its competitors in the market, Garnier launched the

new anti-aging solution with two key creams. Agelift range has the TriActiv AntiAging Cream, and Face Roll On to meet different needs of the aging skin. It fights the three major signs of aging – wrinkles, dark spots and dullness.

The key ingredient is the range is the anti-ageing molecule Pro- xylane - a beech tree extract. “We discovered and developed Pro-xylane after 7 years of research and cutting edge technology. Dermatologically tested, it is a complete anti-ageing solution that addresses virtually every aspect of skin ageing,” informs Singh. In fact for the first time we have a product that not only erases fine lines, but also lightens the skin tone, and gently exfoliates dead skin layer,” she adds.

Our mothers did not have so many choices, when it came to taking care of their skin. The options were limited. But that has changed for us women of the next generation. We have options, we have products and variants that offer different benefits, so it is a crime to not take care of your skin, especially as you cross your 25th year.

To save you from this worry, Garnier has introduced its latest range of anti-aging creams under the brand Agelift that claim to lift away the three major signs of aging even before they set in. Agreed that we Indian women tend to get wrinkles later than our western sisters; but wrinkles are not the only things that mark skin’s aging process. The first sign of aging is when you start noticing dullness in the skin – loss of glow and general tired looking appearance. It is followed by patchy skin tone, and fine lines. So you need a preventive solution that can hold this at bay. “We know that Indian skin doesn’t show wrinkles easily. But that does not mean it is not aging. So we developed something that will help you prevent the process. That’s why we brought out the Agelift TriActiv AntiAging Cream, and Agelift Face Roll On,” says Richa Singh, Director Marketing, Garnier India.

Till now the brand had one product Wrinklelift, which

BEAUTY | OCTOBER 200950

The range is meant to leave you with a visibly fairer, plumper and younger looking skin.

Garnier Agelift Tri Activ is a triple action anti ageing cream which contains a combination of anti ageing molecule Pro-xylane, lightening Vitamin CG and powerful exfoliating agents. So it easily works on the three major signs of aging. According to Singh, it has collagen boosting properties that really bring back the firmness of the skin.

But what Singh is really proud of in the new range is the signature Agelift Face Roll On – an innovative product really. This is Garnier’s first ever toning anti-wrinkle cream applied through a massaging roller ball which plumps up the skin and gives a more toned feeling around the face and neck. “It also has our unique formulation Pro-xylane, but the application method is different. You can literally roll away wrinkles with this,” she says.

The UsageThe claim is that you will get results in four weeks

of usage. The Agelift range has not been defined as a day cream or night cream. The brand has left the choice to you to decide when and how you want to use it. While TriActive is a daily use cream that can work as your regular moisturiser or an add-on over your other cream. It can be worn under a sunscreen or makeup. You can wear it night or day depending on your skin care regime. The Face Roll On is specialised product that can be used twice or thrice a week to tone up your skin. You will need to put the product into your skin using the rolling action that allows better absorption, and has a soothing massaging effect.

The differentiatorWhat makes this range stand out from the rest

of anti-aging products in the market is the texture. In fact this is the first cream that was designed keeping the Indian clientele in mind, and also India is the first country to get this product. “We got lot of customer feedback from customer about the heaviness of the anti-aging creams available here. So we worked hard on getting the texture of the cream right. We had to deliver all the ingredients to the skin without weighing it down. So I can say that texture is something that makes us unique in the market,” emphasises Singh.

“We signed up with Chitrangada Singh as our brand ambassador not simply because she is gorgeous, but because we found a connect with her and the product. She is at a stage in life, like many women in India, where she needs a solution that will make skin care easy, and retain that youthful glow,” says Garnier’s Singh on why the actress was chosen by the brand. We spoke to Chitrangada on her experience with the AgeLift products, and here’s what she had to say:

Finding connect with Garnier AgeLift range

I like Agelift because it clearly follows the scientific fact that ageing starts as early as 25. The moisturisers are preventive in nature and not just correctional. It is based on science and has natural ingredients. There is a 7 year research behind this formula and I believe Garnier has the history and credibility.

Experience of the productsI tried the products and I felt they were very light and not

too heavy or greasy. They needn’t be night creams. They are great as anytime creams. I like the complete package that it comes with. The range takes care of all requirements of some dark spots or early wrinkles or general dullness. It has a tri-active formula so it’s kind of multi tasking for you.

Result on the skinWell, honestly it hasn’t been so long and like I said it’s

preventive in nature so now I have the peace of mind of using a good product, and in the long run I know it will serve the purpose.

Your adviceSince it is a scientifically proven fact that ageing starts

as early as 25 and is preventive in nature and not just correctional, I think anyone who wants to protect themselves from the visible signs of ageing should use this product.

Being part of Garnier familyGarnier is a name that has earned a reputation of being

scientific and natural at their approach. They have a mother brand - l’Oreal which is now 100 years old. So to be associated with a name like Garnier is my privilege.

Diego Perez, hair care expert, and trainer and advisor, Rene Furterer Paris during the brand’s launch by Modi Revlon in India detailed on

why hair fall happens and what to do.

hair FallDeal with

Hair loss pattern: There are two ways that most people notice hair loss. One is what we call progressive hair loss, which is gradual and due to hormonal changes in the body. Most men tend to face this – leading to pattern balding. Then there is reactional hair loss which happens due to sudden stress in the body. It is more prevalent in women who face problems like pregnancy, hormonal imbalance due to various reasons.

Method to cure: If you are suffering from progressive hair loss then it is very tough to cure it. Then the only strategy we have left is to slow down the hair fall process, and extend the period of hair’s life on the scalp. The good news in the case of reactional hair loss is that it can be completely stopped. This is easily controllable through scalp strengthening solutions.

The process: At Rene Furterer we realise that healthy hair starts with healthy scalp, so we first diagnose the scalp condition, and then the condition of the hair roots. You should realise that scalp condition can change from season to season just like your skin. So you need to do regular checks of your scalp and use products accordingly. Our every therapy starts with a dry massage of the scalp and the roots with special brush to improve the microcirculation of the area. The more blood flows into the roots, the stronger they will

get. Other treatments follow this basic method. In fact I suggest that even at home before hitting the shower brush your hair nicely to remove dirt, flakes, and loose hair.

The solution: Besides taking in some vitamin supplements, you need to care for your hair and scalp in different manner. Pick a shampoo that’s meant for your scalp type, and a conditioner that is right for your hair. At our salons we have two basic scalp treatments there is Triphasic – a solution for progressive hair loss, and RF 80 – for treating reactional hair loss. They are applied to the scalp after the massage, wash, and conditioning routine. Based on your state of hair loss we prescribe the number of sittings, and at home care.

Key points: Brush your hair, and massage your hair and scalp before every wash. Massage in the shampoo onto your scalp gently to remove dirt, and then smooth down the strands. Apply hair mask, or conditioner only on the strands and not on the scalp. The oil in product will clog the roots. Always pat your scalp with a soft towel, and squeeze out extra water from your strands – never rub the scalp and hair, you’ll further loosen weak hair from the roots. Avoid blow drying as much as possible, and do not massage the hair or scalp when wet.

It’s the hottest thing in town in makeup. The natural glow and subtle colours of mineral makeup add vibrancy without overpowering the senses. Vimi Joshi, Senior

Artist, MAC Cosmetics shares her tips on applying mineral makeup

MAkeuPApply Mineral

Know your minerals: Mineral make-up is based on a hypoallergenic loose powder that are finely ground natural minerals. It is good for the skin as it nourishes the skin, contains no perfumes, talc, alcohol, dyes, mineral oil or preservatives. All these additives can cause skin allergy or else adversely affect the skin on prolonged usage. Mineral makeup mainly consists of titanium oxide and zinc oxide, which are anti inflammatory, non-comedogenic with a long lasting coverage that is safe even on sensitive skin.

Little goes a long way: Working with mineral makeup can be tricky for women used to the regular makeup application. The first point to remember is that you need to really work the product into the skin, and just dust it lightly – you stand the chance of looking ashen or even have streaked makeup. Start with very little power, and build up as you go.

Set the base: Before you put on this makeup, moisturise and hydrate your skin really well. Wait for at least 5 to 8 minutes after moisturisation to let the lotion sink into the skin. Then use a thick rounded buffing brush like MAC brush no 187 to buff the powder really well into the skin. You will get a matte yet polished skin.

Gentle but thorough: Take a little bit of foundation powder on

your brush and swirl it around so that the powder gets nicely embedded in the brush. Tap off any extra. Then blend from the centre of the face to the outer edge, in small circular movements. Take special care at the temples, the corner of the nose, and jawline. Buff the powder in thoroughly.

Use to conceal: Mineral foundation can also be a good concealer that gives natural finish. To use it as concealer,

simply dip your concealer brush or finger into the powder and apply it to the area you wish to conceal. Blend in carefully.

Build it up: The best thing about mineral makeup foundation is that you can build up the coverage you need. Also the minerals in the powder give your skin a satiny feel. They also reflect light to give your skin a flawless look. Start with a little powder, and then use more in the areas you feel need illuminating.

Play with colour: Mineral makeup is not just about foundation. You can use a mineral blush or eye shadow as well. The colours are more vibrant. The blush gives the cheeks a glow that makes the skin appear translucent, while eye get a shimmering depth with them. Colours such as blue, gold, bronze, peach, terracotta, green, pink appear very vibrant in mineral makeup.

Read the label: Before you decide to snip off the tag on the lingerie, take a look at the fabric and washing label. The sales person most probably would advice you but it is still a good idea to take a look at the washing label.

High on hygiene: Wash your new lingerie before wearing them, even though it may be a brand new piece. For sanitary reasons and to rid the new garments of potential chemical residue soak them in water and light detergent.

Hand washing is best: Resist the urge to put your bras and underwear in the washing machine – even the cotton ones, as it can snag the hooks, and tear the lace. Also the bands can get stretched.

Gently soap it: Soak your precious pairs in a light detergent mix. Make sure to dissolve the detergent well in water. Use a liquid soap for washing. Soak no more than half hour to avoid getting too much on the garments.

Take care of snags: Attach the hooks, and close the zip, and fasten the eyes of the pieces before soaking in your bras, and camisoles. Also soak dark colours separately to avoid bleeding, and discolouration of light hued pieces.

Wash well: Wash padded areas carefully. Pay attention the areas that trap sweat. Make sure you wash them thoroughly or it might give you some nasty rashes the next time you wear it. Do not squash the bra or padding while washing as it will deform the shape. Just press them gently. Put the cup of the bra in the centre of one palm and use your fist from the other hand to press against the cup, this will drain out the water without squashing the cups.

Rinse rinse: Rinse away the detergent thoroughly as most people do not pay attention to this step. Detergent weakens the fibers of the material and leaving them on just speeds up the erosion. In time to come, you will notice that your favourite sexy lace bra is not as snug as before. The bra can expand.

Hang them dry: Do not wring your underwear and bra, just squeeze out extra water, and hang up the lingerie to dry. If not, clip on the straps and the middle portion of the bra, unless you want an imprint of the clothes peg on the padded portion, never snap a peg on the cups portion.

Stow away: Do not fold or crush your lingerie especially padded bras. It is best to lay them out straight in your lingerie shelf. That way you can maintain the original shape of the garments.

What: Rejuvenation with Banana Facial, Massage, and Reflexology

Where: Trendz Beauty & Spa, Seven Hotel, Outer Ring Road, Bangalore

Ambience: As I entered the Seven Hotel, the nouveau French hospitality place, I found myself staring at this huge horse sculpture that also doubles as a lamp shade. By the time I went up in elevator to head to the spa at the hotel, I was quite impressed by the clear cut lines of French decor. I expected the spa to show similar aesthetics. And I wasn’t disappointed. located on the third floor of the hotel Trendz Spa is situated in a lovely little niche done up in blue and white and minimalistic furniture. Quite modern, yet peaceful. The spa has a sitting room where you sip herbal tea as your therapy room gets ready. Trendz also has a salon that is located on the ground floor of the hotel where you can try out facials, and hair treatments.

Treatments: This spa came into being from managing partner Gayathri Kumar’s (an erstwhile MAC Cosmetics employee) need to offer quality, affordable beauty service in a soothing ambience. While the spa menu is not exhaustive but it offers all the key therapies like Detox Package, De-Stress Package, Swedish and Aromatherapy massages, anti-stress therapy, anti-tan therapy, body scrubs, reflexology etc. Kumar says that what sets her apart is the quality of her therapists, and her clients keep on coming back for more for treatments like reflexology, body scrubs, and the detox package. At the salon downstairs she offers various kinds of facials (again very pocket friendly), and signature hair treatments. She believes

in customising the treatments to meet the client’s need as much as possible. Kumar also works closely with l’Oreal Professionnel to offer various hair services.

Experience: I settled for three treatments at the salon to rejuvenate my tired skin, and hair. Since Kumar was extolling the goodness of her Banana facial, I agreed to try that out. I was little iffy about getting bananas in my face, but that was allayed as my facialist got out jars of creams and potions.

I realised that the facial involved using creams, and scrubs made from banana extracts – had glow restoring properties. After the regular cleansing and scrubbing, came the massage – this really was a unique experience. Kumar’s claim was justified, as my facialist used very different strokes, and lymphatic drainage moves on my face, neck, and shoulders to work the creams into the skin. After the massage, which I wished would never end, my facialist applied a tingly mask to restore the lost glow. And it did. I came

out glowing from the facial room for a soothing scalp and hair treatment. Well, I nearly dozed off as the therapist applied and massaged in almond oil into my parched scalp. She really worked it into the scalp using traditional India head massage technique. Post steaming, my hair was washed and conditioned, which left my head clear, and hair silky. My pleasure trip at the spa ended with a lovely reflexology treatment that soothed my aching soles and calves wonderfully.

What: Thai ritual

Where: Mystic Spa, Ambawatta Complex, New Delhi

Ambience: It is in one corner of Delhi, but worth the travel. As I entered the cool, spacious interiors, and a soothing aroma filling the place relaxed my heat worn nerves. Situated on the first floor of the building, the spa’s reception is on the ground floor and is decorated with nature motifs like bamboo. On the second floor, our mystical past is again evoked by the rows of candle that are lit to welcome you. Again the aroma from the burning incense reminds you of the connection with our past. The spa has well appointed therapy rooms that have been designed based on themes. Extensive use of stone, wood, and glass has been made to signify air, water, earth themes. In fact the rooms themselves are worth the visit to the spa as you have a stone walkways leading to the therapy beds. Bamboo, and glass panels with flowing water create a soothing ambience.

Treatments: What I found very different at Mystic Spa was its approach to holistic healing. The spa works on the premise that it’s not just oils, and creams but also the energy around us that defines our sense of wellbeing. According to MD of the spa Sidhharth Shankar the treatments are devised such that the client gets healed not just because of the products but also with the therapeutic touch of the care giver. All treatments are based on age old Ayurvedic practices, and Indian Mysticism. In fact Shankar is also looking at offering spiritual, and physical wellbeing through a blend of old holistic therapies, and chanting of mantras, since he believes that each mantra also evokes sound energy that heals from within. Currently the spa offers treatments like Balinese Ritual, Thai Ritual, Classic Swedish Ritual, Mystic Reflexology, and traditional Ayurvedic rituals like Shirodhara, Abhyanga,

Udwarthana etc. Talking about the spa’s USP, Shankar insists it is the quality of oil, and natural ingredients used. The spa has a parent company that makes its own oils. Besides these signature treatment, Mystic also has a salon that offers regular beauty and grooming services.

Experience: This was the first time that I was trying out a Thai massage. As I was led to the massage room, I loved the high sense of privacy it offered. Though this was treatment that I would get totally dressed, yet this also helped me relax tremendously. I changed into the specific attire that would enable my therapist more flexibility. I was told that the Thai ritual was more popular with the male clients of the spa as it worked wonderfully on stressed muscles. Well I did need a dose of that too. I was made to lie down on a firm mattress on the ground, as the therapist explained that a Thai massage is practically like doing yoga without moving your muscles by yourself. Then she started with gentle massage on the legs, arms and shoulders. From then each move became even more complicated as the therapist used her own body as the resistance while making my muscles and joint move and bend in specific ways. After the initial pain of unused muscles slowly my body started to open up, and I could feel my tired muscles groaning with pleasure. I became aware of many more parts of my body, as my therapist continued to twist and mould my body. I was amazed at her strength as well. After about an hour, I came out feeling thoroughly refreshed, and energised. I actually wanted to go off to sleep as I sipped my post therapy herbal tea.

Price tag: Rs 3,000 for Thai Ritual. Other treatments Rs 900 onwards.

What: Deep Tissue with Swedish Massage, Ozone facial and Natural Inversion hair cut.

Where: lata Hair and Beauty Spa, Andheri (w), Mumbai.

Ambience: The first thing that hit me when I entered lata Spa was the number of mirrors in the area. Unlike other spas where the mirrors span wall to wall, here they were smaller, but created a lovely sense of space within. Otherwise the decor was regular like in any salon. The salon has a strong collaboration with l’Oreal Professionnel, and uses only products from the brand for hair care services. The salon also has a well appointed pedicure area, and therapy rooms. The decor is simple yet evokes a sense of comfort as you walk in.

Treatments: lata Khanchandani, the proprietor enlightened me on the types of treatments that are available in her spa. “We have various spa treatments for the body like reflexology, body polishing, Swedish body massage, etc. and also facial treatments, especially designed for acne, open pores, anti-aging, hydration, hyper pigmentation and skin lightening. Here Hot Stone therapy and Aroma Therapy massage with acupressure sell like hot cakes. All body treatments and facials primarily de-stress and energize clients in addition to taking care of whatever problems they have.” However the salon boasts of good hair care treatments and styling – the reason is that Khanchandani has been styling hair since the beginning of her career, and so it still remains her salon’s forte. To attract more clients the spa has happy hours in the afternoon, when hair cut is done in half the price.

Experience: Khanchandani had instructed my therapist to give me a deep tissue treatment using the Swedish massage technique, so when I was taken to the therapy room, I was in anticipation of the treat I was to have. First my therapist kneaded with aromatic massage oil the knots in my body, limb by limb, part by part to release the stress. Then she applied herbal bleach to my face. Post bleaching, she used a peel to exfoliate the dead cells on my face. Then she started the massage with aromatic oil applying pressure on the acupressure points on my face. This included a head massage. The Ozone pack finally created the final dramatic effect on my face. After shampoo, Khanchandani convinced me to have a complimentary Natural Inversion hair cut, to suit my face structure.

What: Premium cakes.

Where: Monginis Cake Factory, Andheri (w), Mumbai.

Website: www.monginis.net

The Brand: Monginis in the Western and Eastern India is synonymous with celebrations. And the good news is Monginis is 100 years old now with the support of so many satisfied customers. It all started with the charming, friendly neighbourhood Fort boulangerie, which was founded by Italian ex-patriot Signor Mongini before India gained freedom. It was taken over by the Khorakiwala Brothers in the 1960s. Now it is full-fledged chain of 500 franchisee outlets in 11 cities. The company either gives franchisee rights to private parties and supplies only its products or even allows the franchisees to manufacture the products on their own in some places. Monginis is famous for Celebration Cakes, Cookies, Chocolates, Specialty Breads, Snacks and Savories. Orders can be placed for gift cakes online on their website. This online concept also has corporate surprises, party decoration ideas and free home delivery facility. That I suppose is coming a long way, indeed!

Monginis Foods Pvt. ltd has now received an ISO 22000:2005 food safety management system certification. One thing that appeals to you is that it is not a local bakery system, i.e. hygiene and other safety measures have been taken care of from the basic level.

Monginis bagged the HACCP certification in 2005. HACCP standing for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point program is globally recognized due to its policies in a controlled food production process where biological, chemical or physical harm to the consumer is avoided. In other words, Monginis’ HACCP practice is for consumer safety and consumer satisfaction. Using HACCP expertise, they ensure fewer mechanical breakdowns, least downtime, increased traceability and fewer recalls, enhanced employee awareness - sanitation programme, quicker response to crisis - product recall protocol and greater consistency, quality and safety in the final product leading to greater consumer satisfaction - customer service programme.

On the Menu: According to Vishakha Shroff, the National Technical Manager, the Black Forest is the most popular cake from the Monginis house. At the same time, they have recently brought out seven premium flavours for their loyal consumers. They are Irish Coffee, Cherry Red, Oreo, Ferrero Rocher, Dutch Almond, Shimmer, and Zanzibar.

Dutch almond is a dark pure Dutch chocolate cake decorated with roasted almond for someone especially as sweet. Ferrero Rocher chocolate has a hazelnut heart and is used for decorated and layered in chocolate gateaux. Irish Coffee is obviously a coffee flavoured cake. Made from rich roasted coffee Irish coffee is very popular among coffee lovers. Oreo cookies are very popular, too. Dark chocolate is used to decorate this pure rich chocolate cake, where you get the cookie flavour together with chocolate.

We Loved: Being brought up on Monginis cakes, I had kind of got used to them and got to have them for all special occasions. But, this time I got to taste Cherry Red, Shimmer, and Zanzibar from the new collection. Not that the older flavours are not good. But I tell you, the new collection is spongier and tastier than the rest. Cherry Red is a premium gateaux made with rich red cherries in the layer and on top as decoration. The red glaze on top is cherry flavoured jelly and whole cake is decorated with chocolate garnishes. Zanzibar is a dark black chocolate gateau specially meant for dark chocolate lovers. Though all the three flavours were good but Shimmer with the chocolate wafers on the sides, was my favourite. Each piece just melted in my mouth. Sumptuous! Well the gateau – for that’s how you can describe them – may not be light on the calorie front, but for the taste buds it was light and fluffy floating around the tongue.

blue stilettos

Your taste in shoes lies more towards staid black or at most brown pumps. You prefer block heels. But with the party season starting you feel the need to show your colourful side. You want to make a statement without being too obvious, and let’s be honest you are bored with your black block heels. If you are not up to splurging in a bright red or purple pair, your best option is a nice pair of stiletto in indigo or dark blue. The colour is bright without being apparent. Higher heels will make your legs look longer and slim your silhouette. You can pick indigo mary-janes, or round toed blue grey pair. For your traditional attire, pick a satin blue sandal embellished with crystal. For that trendy touch try a pair with accent heels.

Imagine a would be mother-in-law or the would-be

bride’s mother going hunting for wedding jewellery for the bride-to-be with strict instruction that tradition

should meet modernity. But the search often gets futile as these ladies are shown pieces after pieces of thick heavy items, that a modern bride will run miles from. In order to address this eternal problem of finding jewellery to match every taste, Shenaz Amarnani decided to hone

her skills at creative jewellery and create exclusive pieces for these ever searching lot. “This prompted me to create

my own designs, conceive them and I had them finished by my own skilled craftsmen. Everybody loved them, so I thought that I had it in me to get into this profession,”

she explains. Thus after 9 months of learning

jewellery designing at JDMIS, Singapore, Amarnani set

up her brand Mirella, which means to admire in Italian.

Buying jewellery for the wedding can be quite a challenge especially when it needs to meet the bride’s modern tastes, and the family’s

Mirella’s specialityHer specialty includes exquisite

intricate designs using gold filigree and diamonds in various shades on the base of huge chunky precious stones. Amarnani uses only pure and precious gems. Semi precious gems do not exist for her. Since she believes in retaining the term exclusivity, no one design is ever repeated. Exclusivity of each pattern is maintained, one design, one piece. Being a true blue romantic at heart, her intricate patterns normally bloom in flower pattern. Dealing extensively in stones and diamonds, she has huge collection of uncut diamonds (polki) in shapes that are unique like rose cut, piazza cut, round cut, triangle cut, moon cut, star cut, lily cut, pail cut, heart cut and octal cut are some of them. Amarnani like to keep her designs mostly contemporary. Mirella specializes in newer gem stones like tanzanite, amazonite, ametrine etc. However, popular gems like diamonds, rubies, emeralds, opals and sapphires are also a major attraction.

Designs on WeddingsAccording to Amarnani, Indian

women have very vast range of preferences that are often ruled by not just their religion, or region but also their affordability factor, and aesthetic sensibilities. No two women like the same design, she feels. In fact she gets requests to design pieces based on the kinds of rituals during the wedding.

Giving insight into buying pattern amongst different brides, Amarnani explains, “For a Muslim bride it is a completely traditional thing. They will not go in for diamonds. They will go in for more of gold or an antique piece. Christians prefer pieces in diamonds. They like low key stuff. However brides from Gujarati or Marwari community pickup jewellery laden with diamonds. Gujarati and Sindhi clients have very high expectations. They would want to go for the best available in the market. They would want to go in with the trends. You will be surprised when I say that Gujaratis get 3-4 sets made from me for the occasions like for mehendi they

would want a kundan, for muh dikhayi they would want to give their daughter-in-law a normal set. On the wedding day they would want to give their daughter-in-law another diamond set.”

Bridal Trend This Season“I think lots of jadau and lots

of kundan will be bought. And there will be lots of colours this season because the season is full of colours. I think there should be lots and lots of colour this season,” Amarmani emphasises talking about the trend. She also predicts that diamonds though expensive will be in the limelight this wedding season. “People are saying that diamond rates have fallen. Mind you diamond rates have not fallen. But people are still in love with diamonds. And diamond is the most important stone right now this season,” she adds. As for metal it has to be gold, even though the prices have sky rocketed. However she advises that instead of simple yellow gold, girls should try white or rose gold, which gives more modern touch to even traditional designs.

As far as style is concerned she says that Indian traditional style will be popular. “People will go for Indian traditional styles because it’s all coming back. People love Indian traditional styles in jewellery and they are going to go in for them. Tradition is ultimately evergreen and people are sticking to it. Classical designs are evergreen. It stays. It lasts. It can become an antique and you can give on to your daughter, to your daughter-in-law or granddaughter.”

About the designs per se, she says, “Art Nouveau and Art Deco are two different traditional designs which only people from outside India understand. I am very fond of classy designs from that era, even though you use very little gold in creating pieces based on Art Nouveau or Art deco designs.” In fact Amarnani feels that Indian women should get out of their fetish for yellow gold and diamond, and look for pieces made with other metals or white gold along with stones like tanzanite, rubies, emeralds and sapphires.

Tip 1: Mix half a cup of apple cider vinegar with one quart of water and use as a hair rinse after your regular shampoo. Rich in alpha-hydroxy acids, apple cider vinegar helps break down residues build-up leaving your hair soft and full of shine. Rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar at least twice a week and it will be shining in no time. Rohini Singh, Beautician, Chandigarh

Tip 2: If you want to define your eyes and lashes without appearing too made up choose dark brown liner, and dark brown mascara. You can also pick up clear gel mascara that will separate your lashes without adding colour. Choose a lash lengthening variety rather than volumising mascara. line the upper and lower lash line with the brown liner to open up your eyes. Nidhi Raman, Homemaker, New Delhi

Tip 3: For emergency eyebrow grooming try this; apply a hot towel on the area where ingrown eyebrows are to loosen follicles. Then use a tweezer with slant tip for maximum control. Clear away small hair on the area between the brows. Then brush the brows upwards to find your natural arch. Start from under the brow, plucking away the extra. Finally trim the long hair for a groomed look. Saves time and money for professional eyebrow grooming. Smita Agarwal, Showroom Manager, Mumbai

Tip 4 For easy fashion solution I like to invest in tank tops. Stock up on these basics in white, black and some bright colours that will solve your “I don’t have thing to wear moment”. Pair it alone with a pair of jeans for instant hip look, or wear under a lightweight jacket over formal trouser at work.Nisha Khanna, Software Professional, Delhi

Tip 5 Banish a painful zit that about to appear apply a bit of white, and not gel toothpaste onto the area at night. By morning the pain and the zit will be gone. To soothe skin that feels irritated apply grated cucumber or a soaked, and cooled green tea tea bag on the area. Anna Thomas, Homemaker, Bangalore

Tip 6 To get your face looking fresh after a tired day at work try the following - splash warm water all over your face to open the pores, and wipe away day’s grime with a creamy cleanser, then use a soap free foaming face wash to wash away the grease. Finally splash your face with cold water, and rub an ice cube over your skin to get it tingling fresh. It will wake you up as well. Reba Roy, Marketing Manager, Kolkata

Tip 7 To banish yellow teeth, you can rub the inside of an orange peel on your teeth, or take dried orange peel and ground bay leaves and make a paste and brush it on. You can also try lemon juice and salt mixture too. Rinse your mouth well after trying these out. When used regularly you teeth will shine with health. It’s easy on the pocket as well.Lilly Sen, Jewellery Designer, Mumbai

Tip 8 To feel full and energised throughout the day start it with a good dose of protein. First thing in the morning try eating few almonds and raisins, followed by an egg to up your energy levels. Those who do not like egg should try cheese or paneer sandwich. For variation try chick pea paste (hummus) spread on dry toast. It’s low fat but high energy. You also end up eating less during the day which helps maintain weight. Rakshita N, Teacher, Bangalore

BEAUTY | OCTOBER 2009 65

This time when i was scanning the international makeup trend pictures to select the looks for the magazine, one thing that really struck me was the way eyebrows on the models had been done. One thing was evident – eyebrows in various forms made the look statement on the international catwalks. On some of the models the natural brows were hidden by eye shadows, and a thinner line was drawn. In another case the eyebrows were hidden by foundation or gold powder giving the face a very otherworldly look. What was interesting to note was that when i compared two pictures of the same model with differently done eyebrows, she looked two different persons. It made me think that we Indian girls rarely give a thought to how our brows look. Oh we do have one the most well done brows as a country – threading is our secret which is proven to give better shape that waxing (in New York or in London you pay a bomb for a threading session). But when it comes to the brow shape we Indian girls suck.We obviously do not like to experiment, and as general tendency ignore the popular shapes. We don’t even go with our face shape. Most girls i checked out recently either had very close set brows that literally hung over the bridge of the nose, and rounded shape that did nothing for their face other than giving them an eternally surprised look. The lines are clean, neatly done but it’s the shape that hurts the sensibilities. Also when it comes to grooming

we completely ignore it. So i find a nicely made up face with eyebrows that have hair going askew, giving the woman unkempt look. A simple swap of clear gel mascara one the brows would have been enough, a little eyebrow trim at home, excellent. Just to prove to myself, i went to my threading specialist and asked her to turn my carefully done (i am a stickler for neat eyebrows, and grip a mean tweezer to pluck out strays) arched brows into thinner winged ones. She did with pleasure – i guess i am the only customer of hers who comes with different shape request every time. And did i look different? i did definitely. My friends kept on asking me if i had got a facial done.
